Connie’s Grandson Rex caught this walleye off the dock today and he wants fish tacos next! Ha!

And I asked Connie to take a picture of her flag that she had framed many years ago.

Pamela sent these bluebird pics:

Since we’ve been looking at nests, here are more in my piano room:

The lowly hollyhocks

Reader photos

Judith and Ava

Judith has been making bears for as long as I’ve known her. These were made from her sons’ uniforms – heavy, stiff fabric and hard on fingers!

Mary Ellen – a reader wants info on this small project

Keeper loves Three and he has healed Three’s abscess on his back. I tried for several days to get Three to a vet and nobody would see him – too busy. The abscess would scab over and drain and Keeper would lick it and honestly now Three has new pink skin! I am relieved to say the least.

Tomorrow I am going to talk about Wear Warm Clothes – just what we want to talk about during a heat index of 113, right?

What a nice size fish to catch. Great that keeper healed three for you. Great quilt show as always. Thank you for the blog about (nothing) everything I say.

Very excited to hear what you have to say about your pattern Wear warm clothes. It’s always been one of my favorite quilts of yours.
The pictures today were outstanding but seeing that sweet Keeper take care of Three melts my heart. I hear ya about the vets – we now have a new urgent care clinic for pets in our community. Only open Friday to Monday but they were exceptionally nice when we had to say goodbye to our dog last month as her congestive heart failure was harder and harder on her. And then didn’t we need them again the week later for our smaller terrier mix with his infected teeth making his mouth swell up. They got antibiotics into him quick till our vet could see him. It’s been an expensive month for us but I didn’t think the urgent care visit was not much more than what our vet charges for an office call. I think it was $90 before medication.

Kathy – $90 is not bad – I’m not sure what I’m going to do the next time I need an urgent vet. Keeper does have the sweetest personality!

I appreciate seeing the bears Judith made from her sons uniforms. Such a touching tribute. I knew a lady many years ago who made bears from flannel shirts of her husbands so each grandchild could have a part of his clothing rather than a quilt.

Keeper is such a sweet boy to heal and look
After Three. Maybe we should call him Dr Keeper🐶🐶. We have a nest each year in my hanging Begonia. The Cowbirds always put eggs in so the little wren abandons it. Next year we are going to watch more carefully and keep the Cowbirds out! HOT here this week—97, 98, 95, 92 the next few days. Ugh! Love the patriotic quilts. I am taking a hand piece top to my longer. The top was made by my Nana😻

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diane – yup, cowbirds will do that! Can’t wait to see your Nana’s quilt / I hope she does something g special

Loved all the pictures today. Especially the Hollyhocks – we just can’t seem to get them to grow in our garden. Keeper has shown once again that he is a ‘keeper’! Animals seem to know what is needed. for a friend. Stay cool Mary – these next days are going to be brutal. Good for sewing!

We got our corn in late, and I wondered if it would come up at all, but this morning I can see the little green shoots from the kitchen window. It’s a 58 day corn, so maybe by Labor Day?? What beans came up are struggling. Can’t get cucumbers to germinate. What a year! Still not very warm here and gray skies.
That Walleye is a biggie. Should make excellent fish tacos.
Keeper is such a sweet dog and a healer as well. And, Three is letting him do that. What a darling pair!! Quite unusual, I would say. Looks like he saved you a trip to the vet.

Love Connie’s flag. My dad had been an airplane electrician in the Philippines during WWII. He was honored w/ a Purple Heart. There was an American flag that size that had flown on the base where he was stationed. It was in my dad’s memorabilia collection. My brother made a frame from wood on my dad’s farm. He gave it to his grandson who never knew his great grandpa but is a WWiI history buff.

Marcia – oh, what a fabulous way to honor a special flag and its owner!

I enjoyed all the pictures you posted! Seeing those hollyhocks reminded me of those on our farm where I grew up. I recall someone making hollyhock dolls from the blossoms somehow and how charmed I was with them. One blossom was the bonnet, and another formed the skirt. I wonder if anyone remembers those, too.

I’m sad to hear about how difficult it is to get your pets in to see a veterinarian, though I think the process is becoming far worse with humans. It’s great that Keeper took care of things!

    1. Dot iin NC

Yes! My sister and I made hollyhock dolls! We used hollyhock buds for the heads and full blossoms for the skirts. We probably used toothpicks to attach the heads.

I’m so happy that Dr. Keeper treated good old Three’s abscess.

Loving the photos of all my favorite things,,,

Mary, thanks for all the patriotic photos. It is getting me in the festive mood. Keeper is a healer..my dad always said let the dog lick your cuts. I thought that sounded gross! This proved that my dad was right. Five buebird eggs and mama looks a little upset that she was being spied on. Mary, I’m wondering if you “baked” your birds’ nests in the oven to kill any “hitch hikers” before you displayed them in the house.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – as farm kids both Rick and I learned that a dog licking a wound would heal it. No, I didn’t bake the nests / never even thought about it

      1. Janet S

As someone who is very sensitive to mosquito bites etc., I found getting a dog to lick the sting asap takes the sting out. Believe me, it works.

    2. Cynthia in Minnesota

Martha, please explain what one would do to bake a birds’ nest! I have never heard about this.
Today is Larry and my 53rd Anniversary!

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cynthia – Happy Anniversary to you and Larry! Are you going out to eat? That’s always my choice to celebrate.

    3. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – Keeper has wanted to lick the wound on my leg but it just hurt too much to let him do it.

  9. Sandy McPherson

Hi Mary, chilly in New Zealand, 2 degrees Celsius at 6am! My brother has been visiting from Australia for 2 days, today he flew to south island to do 3 weeks locum work. Great to see him as l don’t think l will travel to Australia in future, feeling very arthritic these days. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Wow – that’s amazing that Keeper has healed Three’s abscess! What a blessing. It’s so sweet to see the two of them together like that. Thank you for sharing the pictures of USA quilts & others – I’m adding a few pictures to my list to make for generational quilts for our family — using scraps is my favorite thing to make quilts with. Thanks again!

What a great picture of Rex and his catch! Judith’s bears will bring joy to many. Hollyhocks always remind me of making the “dolls” when I was young.
The quilts are lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Hope all of you having hot weather stay as cool as possible. We are having temps in the mid 50’s and I wore my fleece jacket today.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – oh man! Such huge swings in temps across the US!! Last week I was wearing fleece, too!!

Sharon – I’ll ask – I’m sure he said a walleye but I’m no fish person
