I was so upset last night after reading Betty’s message to me that I simply did not sleep.
Here’s Betty’s comment:
“Mary, quit your bitching about this hernia surgery. It could be a whole lot worse!!!!!! Get a better attitude!!?“
Betty must have forgotten that this is my blog – I can say what I want. I can also cancel subscribers when I want as well which is what has happened to Betty. This was an inappropriate comment in my opinion.
I enjoy this chat among friends but anytime I get an inappropriate, seedy or disgusting comment, that commenter is gone. Readers can choose any number of blogs to subscribe to – I don’t care – I pay all the bills for mine so I make the rules. Take it or leave it.

It was 87 degrees today and hardly felt like football weather, did it? Grass is so dry I turned on the irrigation again.

Why do we give so much more attention to the one or two negative comments we get than the million good ones? All of us do it. It is hard to ignore those meanies but they aren’t equal in weight to all those who love us. Good for you for treating her as she deserved.
I love your blog and am so glad I was able to visit the shop way back when I was a beginning quilter. It was an adventure in my life!
Best wishes for a quick recovery. It seems to get harder and harder as we get older. But the older part is worth it so far, at least for me
I was surprised that you didn’t say more about your surgery. It had to be so tough.
So glad you are improving day by day.
Forget bitchy Betty !!
Sorry you were so upset, Mary.
I did enjoy 99% of Betty’s comments.
It’s one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, to forgive. Forgive everybody.”
Maya Angelou
The true followers understand your pain. Keep on doing what you do! Don’t listen to the naysayers!!! We love you!
People have right to complain… any surgery is not eady and there will be pain…. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!
The Vikings are playing…it appears that they have forgotten how to play football… good grief! So, I’ll tell you all about my latest adventure and forget about football.
I had my annual eye exam a few weeks ago – and I flunked the test! Couldn’t read anything below the top line of the chart, and even had trouble with that. Optometrist determined that I had “secondary cataracts” (No wonder I’ve been having so much trouble sewing and stitching…). I had cataract surgeries in 2016 and 2022 – I had no idea that I’d ever need to worry about it again. So… back to Mayo to have YAG capsulotomy laser surgery on both eyes. Doctor used a laser to burn openings through the membrane that had grown behind the implanted lenses. That allowed light to get through and VOILA! I could see everything again. I don’t know how to adequately explain the immediate improvement – EVERYTHING is brighter and sharper and beautiful! The only downside was that I could now see all of the dust bunnies I missed before!
I’m so glad that your hernia surgery recovery is going well – please take care of you! I am told that I have three hernias (robotic hysterectomy = three incisions and thus = three hernias). Ugh…always something…
Hope you sleep better tonight! L.
I’m so sorry to hear about such an unkind comment on your blog. This is a friendly and supportive place where all of us are able to share parts of our lives and read the things others share about their lives. I love hearing about your life in Iowa. When someone like Betty makes an out of character comment, I wonder if they are suffering some mental or emotional issues. There are so many opportunities these days to read awful things on line, but this is the one place I can always go to read comments from women supporting each other. I find reading this blog an uplifting experience and am so sorry that wasn’t your experience yesterday. I appreciate the effort it takes to keep it all going.

Mary, we all love you “to the moon and back”.
This media lends itself to people who would never say anything this hurtful to your face but hides behind a computer to send hurt through text. So sorry you lost sleep….just thinking about it makes my blood boil. You are the kindest person walking around in shoe leather .
Sleep like a baby tonight.
Blessings Lee
I must say Betty was so very rude. It is a shame that a woman can’t lift up and support other women. You just take your time and get over the surgery, it is hard. Just know there are a lot of us out here that are cheering you on and praying for a quick recovery for you. On the Hazel note, my 93 year old mom is named Hazel and she is too a bit of a scamp at times. Must be the name. Ha. Have a blessed week!!!
Cindy – Hazel is named for MY mom who also fits that description – it’s gotta be the name!!
I, too, was shocked at Betty’s comment. It didn’t sound like her at all. When I’m blue and down, I just can’t find anything fun in my life to share. I’ve heard a lot of judgments, some positive, some negative. I try to keep my mouth shut. I hear about that too!
On the bright side…Hazel has a lot more nerve than me. Looking for “things” under logs, in corners, etc. yuck, I might find something.
Mary, I’m glad you are being good. Recovering from surgery is trying. Especially surgery in the gut area. It’s painful.
Some longtime friends brought their trailer over and we camped in my driveway. It was fun…drink beer, sitting around the fire pit, remembering past experiences, watching the dogs play. I think we started a tradition.
Jo – oh, I think that sounds like so much fun! Especially since the dogs are included – and BTW, if anyone asks me from now on this is my response – “I’m fine”
Mary, I hope you reconsider and continue to tell us how your recovery is going. Like other readers have commented, your blog is like sitting around the kitchen table with a bunch of friends. We enjoy hearing about everyone’s life. The comments readers make also have enlightened us to others medical issues and advice that I find interesting and helpful. You continue to be you..
I’m so sorry there were rude comments made. People unfortunately seem to think they have a right to say whatever is on their minds these days. I grew up with “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then keep your mouth shut.” Personally, I think that still applies. I “unfriended” a neighbor the other day when she made an incredibly rude comment on my FB page and basically said the same thing you did–my page, my choice. You can be rude on your own page, but not on mine. I had deleted her comments before because I know who she is, but I’d had enough–no more chances.
Wishing you continued healing and some good rest tonight!
Diane – oh, this would be a whole lot harder if Betty was my neighbor! Do you have to run into her in person? There are many blogs out there to read – this is a take it or leave it blog!
“carbs and sweatpants” is certainly a timely observation as you hang around waiting to heal. In solidarity choosing the next six weeks to eat healthier. Figuring that following your example of slow and steady will lead to success. Seeing you out and about with Hazel and doing your best every day is remarkably helpful.
Mary…I love that photo of Hazel sitting in the black pot and panting away. Was it a hot day and is there water in the pot? Just so cute.
I was shocked too when I opened your blog and read Betty’s comment. Wow! It’s like someone hacked her or someone in her home snuck into her computer and wrote that terrible message. I hope that is the case and that it wasn’t really her.
Sue – yes, it was 90 degrees and yes, the tub was filled with water
Love the sentiment on the mug. Dogs are great and Betty earned her place in history — Good-bye, Betty! We’re going to 97 this afternoon. Fall can’t get here soon enough.
I am so sorry for “Bitter Betty’s” comment and you did the right thing by deleting her. I love the mug saying.
Reminds me of the sign I read about once in a vet’s office: Dogs welcome, people tolerated.
Please don’t loose another nights sleep over someone’s rudeness. We all think too much of you.
Carolyn
Mary, sorry you have to have rude comments left by readers, but I am glad you have the power to delete the BITTER BETTY’S! I hope you are feeling better each day! Love reading your blog!
Mary, sorry you have to have rude comments left by readers, but I am glad you have the power to delete the BITTER BETTY’S! I hope you are feeling better each day! Love reading your blog!
Oh, my goodness, I just don’t know what is wrong with some people. I am so sorry that Betty’s comment led to your not sleeping. We all love you and support you and want you to be well. I sometimes think that people like Betty haven’t been through health issues. I knew a Vice President where I worked for many years who had absolutely no empathy for anyone with health issues – until her mother became ill and then she herself began having health issues. She completely changed how she treated people then. I am 85 and dealing with so many issues but now am suffering with sciatica. I am trying to deal with it but am beginning to think I may have to go to the doctor. Don’t want to because my last couple of visits ended up with having really bad side effects from medications and treatments. My old body seems to overact to everything. Every one has things going on and each person has their own issues. We never know what someone is going through. I try to remember to be kind. So happy to follow you and all your activities. I look forward to your blog and to reading all the comments. Hazel is a trip. You could definitely write a book about her. I would buy it. Your followers enjoy so much reading your blog and it means the world to me. Thank you!
Brenda,
While we don’t know if Betty is going through troubling times, your advice to be kind is so important and it doesn’t cost a penny. A smile goes a long way, too, whether in person or in words. Isn’t that what Hazel and Keeper manage to give us each time we see their pictures? Then there are the lovely gardens, plants, pets, collections, decor, quilts, shiny windows, (definitely suffering from clean window envy here), and even corn to give us a smile, a sigh, or a laugh.
Thank you, Mary, for managing to send out the blog even though you are recuperating. Just know if you need to take some time away from it, we will be here when you come back. You are a blessing to us all. Prayers continue. Kris in WI
so sorry Betty upset you, most defiantly not acceptable from anybody,
Please do not over do until you feel 100%
Hazel is hilarious, love the picture of her in the bucket, hahaha
and that mug, my sentiments exactly.
Mary,
It’s Betty that has the problem. Don’t let people like her get to you. You are a very positive person and give so much. Be satisfied deleting such comments and go on your way. Also, no one has any idea how much discomfort and suffering someone else is undergoing – we are all different and can’t be compared. I can’t believe all you already doing this soon postop. You’ve got me beat! Carry on!
I’m glad your surgery went well and your recovery is progressing. Surgery isn’t easy and seems to get harder as we get older. You have mentioned how good a glider feels for your back and talked about having trouble finding another one. I remembered sitting in one at a thrift shop and wanting to buy it, but there was no room in the car and we were two hours from home. I recently went looking on Facebook marketplace for one and there were a number of them, and new listings for them keep popping up. Maybe there would be some in your area, too. It might be worth checking, if you’re still looking. I sure enjoy my new, old glider. It feels good on my stitched up back. Sending best wishes you bounce back soon!
Holly – I actually did find another one – identical to my original one – it’s on the porch and when I close the porch it will move to the kitchen. They just fit my back and are so comfortable to me plus I can keep moving! Haha!
That’s wonderful! I kept thinking of your chair search and here you found one. Ha! I’m thinking of getting a second one, too, but I’d have to get rid of a chair to fit it in. That’s a whole other decision my brain doesn’t want to make right now.
Holly – I get it – I have two desk chairs waiting to go to the thrift store so they’re out of my way.
Wow Mary and readers, what a lot of drama. I hope we can all be more positive when we comment. My brain is full of the negative thoughts I might have and refuse to let out. I then tell myself I am the better person for keeping those thoughts to myself. I hope the sleep fairies take them away at night.LOL!
Love that Hazel gives you so much joy and that you share that with us.
Yesterday we had our family reunion from my dad’s side of the family, so many 1st and 2nd cousins.
Over 125 people and I have one aunt who is 92 and their family was raised and lived on the farm. One of the kids still lives on the farm. My cousin said if I needed to use the bathroom upstairs the stairs still have the creaks that make the noise when climbing. They once had a contractor say he could fix it and the said NO we know when the kids came home at night. Such a fun story.
An update on my daughter Kim, when she called this morning she reminded us she has been cancer free for a year now. She is having what is her last surgery on Wednesday to have her ovaries and tubes removed and her nipples tattoo. This is an outpatient surgery. It happens to be their wedding anniversary also but she said it was what they could do to get both procedures done on the same day. Keep her in your prayers. Thanks
I love this blog and all the readers.
Go Fever
Rita – Wow, Kim! You go, Girl!! What wonderful news!
You have a lot of well-wishers. Surgery and recovery are so different for people. Hernia surgery is difficult because you’re afraid it’s not going to “take” I pray for your recovery. I always think that is one of God’s many miracles: “The fact of healing that goes on in our bodies”
Thanks for clearing up about the envelopes. That can just be a frustration on your end. I hope it helps out your pattern business.
All I can say is wow! She has a choice of which blog she reads. If she doesn’t like something about a blog then it’s her choice to unsubscribe rather than make a hurtful comment to you. Totally uncalled for. I don’t remember you complaining about anything. You just stated you’re following the doctor’s orders. Sorry you lost sleep over it but I would have too if it had happened to me.
Gloria – I went back to reread my posts and I can’t find anything mentioning angry.
I am so sorry that those comments were uncalled for. I think she must not have had listened to her mother to telling her ” if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
I wish you a speedy recovery so you can be your old self. That Hazel is something else. She is so smart and ambitious.
Mary you are treasure! A lover of animals, quilts, the country life and a cheerleader for all of us. Your inspiration daily is a joy to read. The “ golden rule” is such a wonderful way to approach every day. You are a shining example of it! Kathryn in Central Illinois
I’m sorry someone was so rude to you. Some people seem to think they can say whatever they want now when they are somewhat invisible behind an email. I’m sure she would never say that to you in person. She is definitely not worth losing sleep.
It always amazes me that someone like Betty thinks it’s ok to be so rude. She probably wasn’t expecting you to block her from commenting. After all she wasn’t being forced to read your blog so if you don’t like what’s being said don’t read it and don’t comment if you can’t be nice.
Needless to say, I am in agreement about Betty and her rude attitude! Your blog is such a treat – I really look forward to it. We are hot, dry and dusty here in central Illinois. Our neighbor to the west harvested his soybeans and the dust and little particles were flying in the air like snow. Today everything has a thick coating of soybean dust. I am watering constantly here at my home and also as a Master Gardener at one of the gardens at the University of Illinois. No rain in the forecast and there is a burn ban in effect. I went to water early this morning to beat the heat! Prayers for peace of mind and speedy and effective healing. God bless you!
Hi Mary, I still can’t believe that Betty was so insensitive. Her comment was uncalled for. I wonder if something is going on with her health that we’re not aware of. It was still not a nice thing to say and you’re right, it’s your blog! We all love you and your blog and pray for a speedy recovery. That Hazel! She’s such a hoot! She and Keeper are a great team. Jan in MA but today I’m at our camp on Winnipesaukee, beautiful day
Don’t let the neggies (negative people) get you down! She is just one and not worthy of your time. You have a lot of people cheering for you to get better. Focus on that. I have experienced anxiety like that which you had and can’t sleep. It’s the mind going nuts. Move on. Lots of life to live with your buddies like Hazel. What a fun dog she is!
Mary I just bet Betty meant well but her words came out all wrong. I’m certain if she could she would apologize to you for hurting your feelings. I think she was trying to focus on the positive but the message got messed up.
Mary,
I have to agree with Jean on giving Betty the benefit of the doubt. Her remark came off as insensitive but she certainly did not mean to hurt your feelings intentionally. I really don’t like seeing all of these comments trashing and bashing her – that is no better than her comment and I feel they are being just as insensitive. I have been a long time blog reader (comment once in awhile) as has Betty. I don’t believe half of these people commenting even know Betty, what might be going on in her life and how long she has been on your blog. It wasn’t real long ago that Betty didn’t comment for a really long time and we were all worried about her including you. Fortunately it was a computer issue and not a health issue and I was glad to see her comments again as were you. IF you are a long time blog reader here, you will notice that Betty can be ‘blunt’ at times, maybe that is just her way (we are not all perfect). We all make mistakes but you could have handled it directly with Betty. This really makes me sad – I feel bad that your feelings were hurt but I also feel bad that you just cut someone off that has truly been part of this blog without at least a conversation or a chance to apologize.
Betty, I am glad to see you are back on the blog. I have read this wonderful connection blog for over 10 years now. We learn so much from each others lives. I really learn a lot from everyone’s experiences, good or bad and a lot about our humanity and how loving and giving we are. We need each other for sure, no woman or man is an island. Today I watered all my gardens and have collected the cosmos seeds and picked tomatoes. Larry and I went to Lonsdale MN yesterday and I got two wind-spinners. With the winds we get out here I hope they don’t break. I will send Mary a photo of them. Back to sewing again today now. I hope to get a few things done this week. Glad you are back, Betty. And Mary, I am glad you said something about the envelopes, I too looked up the size differences. The snake that Hazel killed is a corn snake. I saw one at the DNR building at the Clay County Fair last Monday. We don’t have them in Minnesota. I had not ever seen one before. Love to you and all the readers of this wonderful blog.
Oh Mary, I so enjoy reading your blog & all of the comments every morning with my coffee. I’m sorry that Betty’s rude comment ruined your sleep & good sleep is essential for healing. As my Dad always said “There’s a bad apple in every bushel”. And seeing my girl Hazel puts a smile on my face. That girl is all terrier!
Mary-I am soooo sorry you have to deal with awful people like her. This blog is a joy for all of us and we all can understand pain and not feeling well. Especially us older ladies. Healing doesn’t happen now like it did when we were 30 or 40. Please don’t waste your sleep time thinking about the uglies. Try to remember all the grateful people who follow you and love you. When you lay down at night think about all the loving comments sent to you. Think about Hazel and Hank! Don’t let the uglies take your time. Hoping you heal well and fast.
Elaine Trejo
What Betty said to you is just shocking to me. You did the right thing to just get rid of her. Good riddance. Hope you sleep well and recover quickly.
Oh, Mary…I am so sorry you had to deal with Betty’s rudeness. I had hernia surgery a couple of years ago and my doctor told me it was one of the more painful ones because of your core. We use our core for everything….
I am older and it took awhile to heal and be pain free….sending hugs, love and prayers…
I have been reading about you and the shop for a very long time (I still have all your newspapers tucked away some where…I have never met you, but I feel like we are friends. You once shared my parent’s story about how they met and you shared my mom’s funeral cake…. So, you can vent to me anytime…friends are there to listen…
Nancy – the original funeral cake recipe is still hanging on the front of my freezer! Still a winner!!
Most people who read your blog are kind and considerate. Then there are trolls who hide behind their anonymity. Unfortunately, those are the people who cause the most hate in this world. I’m so sick of social media and the hate storm unleashed this past week, that I am taking a break from it. It’s been said we should turn off the social media, go outside, hug your friends, neighbors and loved ones and tell them you love them.
Today I am recovering from my nieces wedding shower. It was small, all family, and she received some very lovely gifts. I’m finishing her wedding quilt today then off to the long armers.
Glad you are feeling better. Give Hazel a hug from Elliott. Love you, my friend. Hugs
Diana – I haven’t watched the news most of the summer – I think it’s just bad for my mojo.
I’m with you Mary and have tuned out the negativity and rudeness that seems to dominate how the news is presented today. It’s a much more pleasant day when we don’t have to hear so much anger and hostility against each other.
I had abdominal surgery 6 years ago for a tumor and it was robotic like yours but I experienced so much pain for 2 weeks and needed to take the pain killers. It’s hurts moving the core and I so wished for a bar above me to get me out of bed.
Thanks Kris for the update on your continued journey with your kidney treatment.
Mary keep surrounding yourself with the love we all feel for your blog and land and animals and sewing room and porch. And I hope today playing at church brought you some peace.
Oh, Miss Mary, so sorry you lost sleep over Betty’s comment. That was a very rude and hateful thing to say and I really hope she gets some help with her attitude. I tend to have the same problem sleeping when something upsets me.
Before we moved here we had a pool and would enjoy getting in at night. We would count the bats 🦇 swooping around getting mosquitoes. One night one dipped down into the pool just a couple of feet from me. So fast and it was gone so wasn’t scared. Darrell found a couple of sleeping bats curled up in 2 of our bluebird houses 🤭! Will look for the picture to send.
I’m hoping you can rest well tonight and enjoy a cold ice tea 😉
Mary, I rarely comment but read your news every day and enjoy. It occurred to me that if I feel you’re a friend that I check on everyday I should comment once in a while. So just know that I hope you feel better and keep writing. Your friend, Chris from SC
Everything needs a cleanup, even your blog! Your personal space so definitely your rules! Keep healing and sharing all the fun adventures from your rural life, love hearing about everything!!
Well, we haven’t had enough rain to wet the pavement for quite a while so the front lawn and several other places in the yard are crunchy like shredded wheat. I’m glad you have irrigation – kind of wish I did, but the cost t run it would be outrageous in town. My son is thinking about having it put in.
Betty can go take a flyin’ leap!
I have a cairn terrier that likes to dig and hunt mice. She thinks moles are mice too and will dig a good sized hole in the yard when in search of one. Her name is Pepper and she is definitely my dog. If I have to be gone for most of a day, I have my son stop and let her out to do her business. She loves him to no end when I am here, but when I am gone she just does her business and then waits by the door that I went out of for me to come home. Sometimes she waits on the back of the couch looking out of the window. I read somewhere that our pets lives are very short compared to ours and they spend most of it waiting on us to come home. That made me very sad and I take her whenever I can.
I’m not very good at commenting on your blog but I read it every day and enjoy it immensely! I love all the windows on your porch.
Hang in there; you’ll get up on of these days and feel better. Soon you will be back to your old self!
So sorry about Betty’s comment on your blog. Some people just are unhappy in life and they feel they want everyone else to feel the same. Glad you can delete her as a subscriber. I love to read your blog every day and enjoy it so much. I rarely write a comment but felt this issue about Betty needed for me to let you know I am sorry you lost some sleep over her comment. Just keep doing what you are doing-I think we all enjoy your blog so much.
I love watching Hazel and all of her antics.
Totally agree with the sentiment on your mug! Too many haters in the world right now walking on two legs! Best to hang with the four legged creatures!
One has no idea what someone has gone through with a surgery!!! Shame on Betty!!! and Mary — vent away!!! Good for the soul and the healing process!!!!! I’m glad Betty is gone. That’s the other thing (in my opinion) there’s too much negativity right now! We need to turn that around! That’s what I love about reading your blog….. Hazel and Keeper always bring a smile to my heart. Your comments always give me a chuckle. The creativity of the quilts!
As far as the envelopes — good gracious people WE ARE ADULTS! How difficult is the proper envelope??? Mary should not have to deal with this aggravation!!!!
Well, if you can’t share your troubles with your friends, who can you share them with? We consider you our friend!! I guess Betty didn’t. Let’s pray she sees the light.
I have 3 baby quilts to finish then 4 pairs of “Grammy jammies ” to make! Never an end to my “to do” list.
Have a great day and keep getting better!
Mary I am so sorry for Betty’s rude, insensitive and downright nasty comment. It was uncalled for and I’m glad you blocked her. 🙏 For continued healing.
Love Hazel’s adventures – and the picture of her in a bucket – just too cute! And I want that mug 😁
Hi Mary. I’m glad you are getting along so well after surgery. I know you’ll continue to do so. It looks like Hazel was happy with herself after her work with the snake (the picture of her with her tongue hanging out)! So cute. It as been a wonderful August and September here in Eastern NC. It is not usually this lovely and cool here. I’m looking forward to sweatpants and I already love the carbs!
I got my strips cut ready for my next quilt, a string quilt. I’m always ready to start one, but then too quickly I’m ready to be through with it. 😄
I’m sorry it’s always quite a process to recover from surgery. I’m sorry about receiving a comment that wasn’t helpful. We know it can always be worse, but our struggles and pain are our own.
I hope you’re past the worst part of your recovery.
Love the Hazel pics! Every morning, hubby and I laugh about her latest antics! Glad you are healing well.
Kind wishes Mary, cheers
Hazel is such a wonderful terrier. I had to put my last Wire Fox Terrier JR to sleep a year ago, and I miss him so. Before him were Buddy Wiser and Sweet Tea, a Wire Fox Terrier and a Terrier/Boston Terrier mix. They were a hilarious team whose antics still bring me joy. I’m 79 and unable to care for a terrier dog anymore, but a cat with a terrier heart has adoped me. I’m a quilter as well. Have never commented on your Blog before, but wanted to say that I enjoy reading about your experiences with your dogs, your quilting, your plants, and your life. Please keep sharing.
Sara – I wish you had commented when your last terrier was still with you – I’d have loved to post his picture. Reader comments about their own lives are my reward for writing the blog!
I’m so sorry to read about Betty’s rude and insensitive comments! My mom taught me that if you can’t say something nice, keep your mouth shut. Sending the most positive vibes for a speedy recovery and hoping that you only receive good comments here. Thanks for posting the pictures of the envelopes, I didn’t know the difference of sizes by number. When reading your post about the envelopes, I went and googled the different sizes to have a better understanding. You are a good person and I love reading your blog.
It’s obvious everyone agrees that Betty needs an attitude adjustment. I have never understood people who think they have the right to be so forward and rude to others, I always figure they are really unhappy people without friends or family that love them – who would? She isn’t suffering the pain and limitations you are and she apparently isn’t aware of the discomfort of having your body cut on! No one will miss Betty.
Take it easy and share your uncomfortable situation with those of us that do care, we sympathize with you and wish you a speedy recovery. You are smart to do nothing because you want to heal and not end up with more repairs!!!
Blessings to all who are kind and caring!
Can you just imagine having someone like betty being a guest in your home ??? It is too bad she hasn’t been able to read all the friendly support messages from so many of us. Unless this was just a one off day for her, can’t you just feel so much sadness for her family ???
Hope you are feeling better really soon. Have you tried some mint tea and a biscuit on your lovely porch ??
Hi Mary, glad Hazel killed the snake(l have named it Betty! )thank goodness I live in New Zealand, no snakes! Had a wonderful time at our quilt fiesta yesterday, tons of quilts showed, my Japanese bear paw got an award, framed it already! Keep getting better Mary, and take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Sandy – you are hilarious!!! Named the snake Betty! Do you really not have snakes in New Zealand? In the 50 years I’ve lived on the farm, I had seen only 3 snakes until this summer. I wonder what changed. Congrats on your award.
Hi Mary, yes no snakes! 8 out of 10 most dangerous snakes live in Australia, that’s my reason to live in New Zealand. Take care Mary, we all love you!,sandy
When I read Betty’s statement, I was shocked and thought it was very offensive. I’m sorry you lost sleep over it. I love Hazel and her adventures. I don’t like snakes, bats, mice or rats and the skunk that visits my yard and tears up the lawn. Has she ever brought a critter into the house?
Charlotte – has Hazel ever brought a critter into the house? Haha! We have a dog door and Hazel as well as the cats bring stuff in all the time. The worst was during the winter when Hazel had a full grown dead rabbit laying beside her in the living room!
I have not had time yet to read the other comments but any surgery is a very big deal. That was a ridiculous thing to say to any one. I’m glad you blocked her and hope you sleep better tonight. Having just had my own surgery, I sympathize with you and hope you are not doing too much. Feel better, but we really want to know how you are feeling and doing.
I drove home from my daughter’s today, she had surgery 10 days ago, is getting better, I needed to come home. I cleaned her house while I was there, not white glove, but better than it was. Another blog I read had a commenter, Betty, who griped when the writer admitted that she was having dialysis and got a transplant. Said she didn’t care about her health, wanted to see her stitching progress. Betty’s gone there also. Take care,
Dee – gosh that sounds like the same Betty!
Oh Mary, I’m sorry that a Betty had to say such dreadful words on your blog. However, I wonder if she or a loved one has a health issue and she is so angry at the world right now and just had to lash out. I think you have a great attitude about everything. You are an inspiration to me.
I was actually quite surprised at the comment and thought must have read it wrong, so re-read it. I agree, with others. People need to be nice to everyone, period. I pray each day you feel a little better and start feeling more like yourself soon. Are you playing the piano at church tomorrow. I hope you do. It will be uplifting, even if it brings you pain, I think you will also have joy.
What our world needs is more care, love and concern for each other. Not comments like Betty’s that are negative and heart breaking! Surgery can be hard on everyone and we all need to take care of each other.
Hazel sure is a brave little dog! Snakes, Ugh!
Mary know that most of your blog readers care about you!
Mary please don’t loose sleep over Betty’s comments. I think it was perfect that you deleted her. I bet she isn’t a regular follower, just a ‘but-in-ski” trying to rain on someone’s nice day. I follow other blogs and they have had a Betty or two as well. I really think its’ just someone trolling and spoiling. You don’t need that! I always love to see Hazel and Keeper in action. Hazel in the bucket was so cute.. Thank you for the Blog. Your hard work is appreciated by so many.
Well Betty has her nerve! I was concerned you had to go through another ordeal with surgery and was hoping the slicing and dicing was much smaller. I can’t imagine someone making a comment like that. And you weren’t complaining. She got my ire up.
As I’ve said before Hazel is a hoot. I do so enjoy her adventures. Keeper is the best.
I’ve been really bad in the commenting department. I often get your post at 12 or 1 AM and I want to respond, but I know I need to go to bed. In my head, though I always have something to say, but it doesn’t always get put on paper so to speak.
We have so many critters around us. It is always a challenge. Tonight my son found a small lizard in the bathtub. He carefully gathered it in a plastic tub and released it outside. Little lizards I don’t mind but snakes in my house are another issue. We’ve had seasons Where there have been. too many. We have 3 1/2 acres that is surrounded by farmland at the moment. Groundhogs ,raccoons, fox and lots of deer traverse our yard. Hazel would probably have a hay day here. Right now we’re having problems with moles or voles. There are mounds of dirt everywhere.
Our Fall has been delightful weather wise except for the fact we haven’t had any considerable rain since I don’t know when. Everything is fried up. All my ferns and hostas are done. The leaves are falling already because they haven’t a drink in so long.
Have a good sleep tonight and I love your abundance of plants., clean windows and country living-and your willingness to entertain us.
Peace out.

I’m glad you “poofed” Betty. Her comments were totally uncalled for.

I am appalled by Betty’s inappropriate comments! You certainly did the right thing to block her!
I am also impressed that you are not afraid of snakes! I would be terrified, as I am also of mice. We will not even discuss bats!!!
Hope you get a good night’s sleep tonight.
Take care,
Carol in Spokane
Oh Mary, I love your blog so very much! It was so unfortunate and downright nasty of Betty. Thank you for blocking her. We love you and wish you only the very best!

I’m shocked with that Betty’s comments! You did the right thing by deleting her! How terrible of her to even think it…… and much less write it!!!😢👎 Re: envelope issues…… might I suggest you add $1 to your price….. then you get the appropriate envelope for the pattern?….. just a thought!😉🥰
Mary Ellen – I don’t have time to write all the addresses – and what about the stamp?
Wendy – do you know Jane Wayt in Brainerd?
Sleep well tonight and good riddance Betty. That was so uncalled for. I hope you’re healing well and don’t have a lot of pain.
We saw a baby rattlesnake in the road during our evening walk last night with our shih tzu. He wanted to sniff closely but of course we gave the snake a wide berth.
Love the coffee mug!
Oh Mary, I am so sorry about Bad-Betty’s comments. I can’t understand why anyone would be so cruel. On a happier note, Hazel looks extra cute sitting in the bucket! She and Keeper deserve an extra biscuit!
Sending hugs and dog slobbers your way,
Sandi from Oregon

Unnecessary comment. Good one to delete. I glad you have Hazel for defense when you wander. 🙂
So long Betty. Any surgery is scary and especially when it comes as a result of other surgeries. I had to have a revision of a knee replacement and thought great knee replaced and a year later revised it put me in a funky mood and I can understand your thoughts Mary. So goodbye Betty.
Did Hazel kill the snake? I am so terrified of snakes I can’t imagine taking a picture of one and how did you get Hazel away? My screaming would have scared the neighbors even if you can’t see their house from yours. Hazel is braver than I am. MUCH BRAVER.
I love your blog as it reminds me of the GOAT Gazzette. There are too many negatives in the world and definitely don’t lose sleep over it. Drunk an (ice tea) and go to bed and sleep like Hazel and remember we are rooting for you with our legal size envelope
BTW. Got my card in the mail yesterday. I enjoy sending a card to brighten up someone’s day it brightens up mine as well thinking of how they explain it to the mail carrier. LOL
Angie – thanks for your support. I believe Hazel killed the snake – after shaking it over and over she was bored with it and we took off – I didn’t go back to check on the snake. She also found 2 large skins that had been shredded. I don’t like snakes but they aren’t my most feared critter – that would be a bat.
Angie – auto correct!!! Shed not shredded!!!!
I’m glad you deleted Betty. You are right. It’s your blog and she has no business trying to control it. I love your Hazel. We’ve got a terrier but he isn’t a digger, thank goodness. Glad she got your snake.
I hope you sleep well tonight. I’m sorry for the unkind words you received. You did not deserve that.
It was 82 here (Salem, OR) today. We are enjoying the last few days of summer.
