Oh, That Gorgeous Corn! 9-12-25

Just look at those golden ears peaking thru the husks and stalks! Isn’t that a beautiful sight?

The corn is turning color
More plants in the piano room

Remember this corn from last summer? It, too, has gotten very tall. I’m too old to remember the location. I’m also not able to keep readers’ mailing addresses.

I do keep the envelopes from the orders but they’re in no order except by date and if you’ve never ordered anything I have no record of you. Speaking of orders….who doesn’t know what size envelope I’m requesting when I say SASE? It’s a #10 business envelope. American Harvest is 3 sheets of paper each 11×17. Who thinks I can get that in a letter size envelope? Who also thinks they can just use a return envelope provided by a business that is a #9 envelope making it possible to fit inside a #10 envelope? Which also means a folded 11 x 17 paper won’t fit. I learned this stuff in high school. All orders are in the mail despite all those envelope issues that I dealt with today.

Li sent this sweet lavendar stem stitched to card stock.

It was a nice warm day today – I had a nap late morning, took the dogs to the field, spent the afternoon in the porch and welcomed Hankster for a quick visit late in the day.

It was Day 4 after surgery – I’m tired, my midsection hurts, the binder is soooo uncomfortable but I will continue to follow my dr’s instruction to a T. I want this to be over with.

Boring Day 5 tomorrow. Also a friend mentioned there’s Covid in Garner again – I’m not going into town.

I’m so glad you are resting and following doctor’s orders. That’s the fastest way to recovery. I love your piano room with all those windows. Your plants must thrive in there. Loved the cow joke. I needed a laugh especially after this week. The tears just seem to appear. Have a great rest of the weekend.

Thanks Mary. I was not sure if the lavender sprig would arrive crumbled. It is the Munstead variety. Those plants are thriving this year.

Li – as you can see it arrived intact and perfect. I planted a new lavender this year and hope it survives.

Keep on resting to heal faster. Winter is for projects inside and you’ll still have time for outdoor things before it gets nasty.
Covid is around here too and we are going this coming week to get our vaccines. I want to keep it at only one mild case we’ve had.

I hope you have continued healing and a pain free recovery. Thank you for such a great blog with beautiful pictures and wonderful fellowship. This has been a rough week. My heart hurts for the young Ukrainian lady killed and the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Two young children will have to grow up without a father. I know other awful things have happened but these are still on my mind. Hug your loved ones.

I love, love the piano room! Can I move in with you?
I know the answer to that, but I can still love it!
Have a getting better every day for you!!

Mary thanks for the corn picture and the quilts are lovely. At least some of you are getting some sewing done. Not so much here.
I finished all the main floor windows over two days. Cleaning screens, woodwork, and glass inside and out. Just the basement windows to go.
Made a pasta salad and a Marble fruit bars this morning for a family reunion on my dad’s side of the family. It is being held on the farm that they all grew up on near Watkins, Iowa. My cousins now own the farm and are hosting the event. So much fun.
Things are getting cleaned up outside and the list is just waiting for the first frost when the Black Walnut twigs fall to the ground. They will get burned in the burn ring.
Soon to clean up the rest of the garden mostly tomatoes and peppers.
Stay well everyone and take it easy Mary.

Mary, so glad you are listening to your Dr. Yes, that is how we get better faster. The corn looks so yummy. The corn grown here is pretty much done for the year.
Well, we got possession yesterday and now the fun begins. The carpets were cleaned so the bedrooms were off limits till today. The movers bring everything today about noon. Can’t wait till my kitchen is organized.

The corn is beautiful and is so varied in its color. We drove to Clear Lake, IA this week and some fields looked ready to harvest and others were still a pretty green. Some fields of soybeans were turning their golden color. It will be harvest time soon.
Take care of yourself and try to “relax”, however you define that, Mary.

Glad you are staying away from areas that are reporting a Covid flare up. and that you are following Dr orders to a T

So glad you are feeling better and taking care to follow doctor’s advice. Love, love that piano and your room! I used to play a lot but not now. Would be a good thing to start again. I have spent my time lately making a new grandson a quilt.
The corn down our way is drying up and some farmers are picking corn already. We are in a real drought down here right now though. We had SO MUCH RAIN in the Spring but now none. I live in southeastern Illinois, way down toward the rivers, ha.
I LOVED seeing the Little Quilts! I hunted up my Little Quilts book but that pattern is not in it but I found it online and ordered it! How about that. I am going to send a check for that quilt pattern you had a few weeks ago, had stars all around and star center, 30 stars for thirty years. Do you still offer it? Waiting until you feel better though.
Love the dogs escapades! Hazel is so cute! They both are.

I love corn in August; that deep green just before it starts to turn. I even painted my kitchen cabinets that color; hated leaving them when we moved. Saw a field of corn that is nearly dry yesterday here on the south side of the Quad Cities. Fall is certainly in the air. Having a few 90 degree days will hurry crops along.

Glad to hear you are doing what you are supposed to be doing and following doctor’s orders.

Your piano room looks lovely. It would be lovely to just sweep in and play something in such a beautiful setting. I don’t play but I’m thinking of songs that would fit the room.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

DebMac – and I do just that lots of times – I walk in, play the song that’s open and walk out again. It is a gorgeous room.

      1. Judy

Mary, when I see your music open on the piano, I try to see what you have been playing. But so far The picture has not clear been enough to read the music.

Mary, so glad to hear you are following dr’s orders. Hopefully you will have an uneventful, full recovery and can get back to doing all the things you love to do. I am amazed at the quantity of plants you care for. I have three house plants, two of which were my mom’s who passed away in 1997. One is an African violet which still blooms a couple times a year and the other is a peace plant from her funeral which is not a very pretty plant but I don’t have the heart to get rid of it as long as it has some green leaves.
I was having terrible aches in my legs at night, one night only getting two hours sleep. I went to the dr and he suggested I call my cardiologist and check to see if it would be ok to stop my statin for a short time. Well, I did, and I have had two glorious night’s sleep with no pain and I even walk better with less pain in the daytime. So I will be getting a prescription for a different statin. I would suggest if anyone is having groin pain or pain in their legs that can’t be explained and they are on a statin to ask their dr about it. These medications have lots of side effects. But don’t stop any medication without a doctor’s ok first.

DebMac, I love that image you created…. sweeping in to a room to play the piano. I think I might need to start doing that at my house. The only sweeping I usually do is related to floors LOL.

That corn looks great! Farmer Tim should be real happy.
Your piano room looks so inviting. I’m glad that you can get some naps in. The cow joke was cute. I have a busy day tomorrow. I’m cleaning my kitchen and sorting out things I don’t use. Then, if time, I’ll move on to a closet and weed out items that I’ll never wear again. I need to water our baby trees, also. It’s been pretty dry here. I hope everyone has a nice weekend.
