Orders and Discussion, 2-3-24

I think we have all enjoyed the Minkie discussion – I personally learned a lot and I’m not even sure how to spell it! Haha!! Thanks to all of you who weighed in in the subject.

I have gotten many orders for Thirty Stars and have spent most of this afternoon filling those orders. I have used assorted paper just because I have it and want to use it up. I am taking all the envelopes to the post office Monday morning to see if one stamp is going to be sufficient. I didn’t remember I would be sending 3-1/2 pages until I started copying. Not to worry – I will cover it if necessary.

The cards I receive are so entertaining!

Vicki – is this your quilt?
Patty – the work involved in this sweet card does not escape me! Beautifully made.

Donna S – I must ask when your 80th birthday will be – I would like to send you a card!!

Diane Andrea in FL – I so appreciated your order as I assume it was difficult to write. Thank you for your efforts!

I am well aware of postage costs these days and I would never want those costs to be a burden to anyone wanting to send cards. Please feel free to leave your greeting in the comments section if that’s the case.

Time to watch Iowa and Caitlin Clark vs. Maryland – in Prime Time!!

Diane – and it WAS a good game. MD really gave them pause and if the 4th quarter had been a repeat of the 3rd quarter, Iowa would have gotten beat. Caitlin is always interviewed and is always Iowa nice.

      1. Diane in Maryland

Do you know that Brenda Frese is an Iowa girl? She was born in Rapid City, IA. She is also Iowa nice. It was a good game! Maryland never gave up. Caitlin Clark has done a lot for women’s basketball!

Diane – Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I truly had forgotten until Jeanne mentioned it! MD did not give up and it was fun to see that the Hawkeyes could fight their way through. Yes, I believe “Iowa nice” is an actual thing – Caitlin IS women’s basketball!

          1. Diane in Maryland

Whoops… got the place wrong. Caitlin sure has done a lot for the sport. We have watched men’s and women’s college basketball for years being U of Md fans but I admit that now we are paying more attention to women’s basketball because of Caitlin Clark. Those Iowan girls sure can sink the 3 pt shots!

very interesting . I was able to copy the address roster for sharing cards so i wont be having try to remember them. thank you.

  2. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, I wish that were my quilt on the first card.
There is a wonderful garden and quilt show north of Seattle every two years. Photographers are welcome and I snapped several inspirational photos there. I can’t wait for the next show!!
Thanks again for all you do for us!

That Iowa/Maryland game was a barn burner! Congrats to the Hawkeyes……their first win ever in Maryland. Maryland gave them a run for their money, but the Hawkeyes came out on top. It was a good learning experience for all of them. Coach Bluder does a wonderful job coaching those girls. Caitlyn Clark just keeps doing what Caitlyn Clark does. Now if I can just go to sleep tonight :).

Jeanine – yes, Maryland really played hard and good! It was fun to see the Hawkeyes have to push – and Caitlyn continues to praise her teammates and coaches. Iowa nice.

Iowa’s coach is such a class act and as you describe the players – Iowa nice. Makes me so proud to be from Iowa.
Beautiful cards. I had a friend in WI who made greeting cards from quilt pictures and they were gorgeous.

I had minkee for the backing of a graduation t-shirt quilt for my cousin’s son. The quilter had no problems with it and it turned out fantastic!!

Great Iowa game again. Caitlin is amazing and always seems to know where everyone is on the court and when to pass the ball xoff to her teammates. She is so close to topping the all time scoring record for women, what a wonderful basketball career she has had and continues to have. And to top it all off, she really is Iowa nice.
I remember when Brenda Frese, the Maryland coach, was a high school basketball player in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She has had an outstanding high school basketball career and coaching career just as Lisa Bluder has had.
We finally got some much needed rain today that turned into snow. Temps then dropped and it was a good day for chili and then some sewing in the afternoon. Have a great weekend everyone. Jeanne in Co.

Patty, what would that quilt look like if your fun card design was expanded? Worth a try, I think! Vicki, your card is lovely and reminded me of my attempt at a One Block Wonder quilt. Complete fail color-wise! Not enough light/dark contrast in the fabric design; contrast — my eternal nemesis.
Mary, I have to laugh at some of the ads that have been popping up on my laptop lately. Either my husband is looking for a new car…Ford and Subaru ads plus brake repair and oil change ads…or my computer has picked up on all the bad parking photos! And tonight, after tracking down a children’s book for a friend, what should pop up but ads for Back to Charm School…we know where that connection came from…and a book titled, How Not to Become an Old Lady! LOL! It must be a conspiracy. I knew there were spies everywhere. Now I have proof and had a good laugh besides! Has anyone else had any interesting ads come through or is it just me? Kris

I volunteer at our free clothes closet and a lady dropped off bags of donations. As we sorted it out, I found a first for us – ammunition shells in pockets and I knew the man was an outdoorsy guy anyways so not surprised. I mentioned it in a few emails to friends but not on this blog and sure enough I got ads for ammo and now spam emails selling it. It is crazy what these devices we use pick up on our business.

    2. Diane in Maryland

It is not just you! I’ve been getting a lot of car/truck ads as well. You may be on to something… we are not looking to buy a new vehicle. haha

    Hi Mary,

We had a high around 61 degrees today. All heaters were turned off. Yippee.

Spent the day in the sewing room after unearthing some 30 year old triangles. They were made into triangle units for a future project. Then some equally old blocks were starched in order to be trimmed and assembled into something small, probably a wall quilt.

It’s very nice of you to list the names of folks who would enjoy cards and equally wonderful of your readers to send them. It definitely takes a village.

Thanks for all you do Mary.

Omg Mary! My husband and I watched the Iowa women play last night partly because of you! Neither of us has ever watched college women’s basketball but we are hooked! We both agree that we probably would not watch it if it were not for Caitlin! We are going to look up the dates of the games and watch! My husband is from Harlan Iowa. I have sent cards to three of the ladies. I love doing it! Yesterday I bought another box of blank cards so keep the names coming!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna Jo – I read your comment to Rick! Thank you for watching – she is quite entertaining, isn’t she? I just wait on pins and needles for the next game!

  9. Marcia-Ohio

I certainly think sending a card is important so keep the addresses coming. I would appreciate cards if the shoe was on the other foot.
I have a second cousin who is incarcerated because he was a stupid teen. His mom asks for birthday cards w/ a message once a year. I struggle to write but I know he appreciates them.
This warmer weather and sunshine lifts my spirit.

Mary, the next game is Thursday at 8:00 o’clock! As if you don’t already know that! Lol!

  11. Kris in Naperville

Hey Mary — speaking of Iowa girls bball and Caitlin Clark, I live in the Chicagoland area and last week (or so) Caitlin Clark and Iowa girls came to play Northwestern. The news channels (all of them) reported that for the first time, ever, the Northwestern girls basketball team had a sold out stadium for the game. Of course, the stands were filled with Iowa fans…. Iowa won the game handily. I thought of you when I heard the story so I thought I would share.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kris – nobody can get a ticket in Iowa so they have to go to an away game to watch her play!

  12. Marilyn in Southern Iowa

Thanks so much for sending the 30 Stars pattern so quickly! I wasn’t even looking for it yet when it showed up in the mail. Now to search through the “collection ” for the right fabrics.
I pull out a hand quilting project to work on during the Iowa games. Caitlin Clark is really something…as are her teammates. I especially like how the team works together..no ball hogs there!
