Our Next “CARD BOMB”, 6-21-25

Got this email from Chris H.: Hi – me again. Holy smokes this woman had a life filled with volunteering. My friend Sheryl (Mickey’s daughter) writes:

Mickey has 2 kids, 4 grandsons, 2 great grandsons and a great granddaughter.

She sang in the church music choir for Our Lady of Perpetual Help & Saint Helen’s in Glendale. She and I sang in my father-in-law’s music group for the Pope in 1987.

She’s been involved in Habitat for Humanity and many back to school programs.

She has a strong love of her community and served on the Glendale, AZ city board. She was part of the Glendale Civic Pride group. If you went to “Glendale Glitters and Glows” (a holiday light display and fair) you’d see her and my dad serving beers, coffee and hot chocolate.

Ballgame is over and I’m now catching up on the news about the bombing of Iran. No politics here, only sadness that there is so little peace in the world.

Please send Mickey a card! It doesn’t have to be fancy – just a small act of kindness for someone who recently entered hospice care. Think how lonely it must be when family and friends may not visit or keep in contact. Remember what I’ve said about old women % they’re so easily pushed aside and forgotten. Please help me make her days happier and show her that strangers can be very friendly and kind. Even if it’s just a card. Thanks so much!!

And now my rant for the day – have I ever told you to make your check out to Country Threads? No, not ever. The bank wouldn’t cash the checks or deposit them in my account because my account is under my name. These employees were in their 20’s – they’ve never heard of Country Threads. Please make your checks out to me, Mary ETHERINGTON. I wonder how many times I’ve written that in my posts.

End of rant. Good Night.

Put my card in the mail this morning, I love that we can reach across the miles and make a difference with a small act of kindness. We needed to take a ride yesterday for an appointment and I was surprised how many fields aren’t planted yet, I think they may have been rained out and nothing will be put in now. The corn fields were about 8 to 12 inches high which isn’t much for this time of year. It fun to see how high the corn is in other states. Susan K, your quilt with the 9 patches and blue background is gorgeous, It reminds me to use something other than cream for a background fabric. The rain just keeps falling here and its humid, so we stay inside and play cards.

We had .65 of rain early this morning! What a wonderful rain! And it cooled off! Yay!

Praying for Mickey and sending her a card this morning. Yes, she kept busy over the years.
Love the pictures of the Golden Retrievers. They are so sweet.
This heat sure makes me glad I live in Ohio. My week in South Carolina sure made me realize I couldn’t stay the whole summer. Stay cool, ladies.
    Spring goes by too fast!!

HI Mary, I loved the rant. I bet the teachers out there could identify! When I gave my students, 10th and 11th graders, an assignment, I told them, wrote it on the board, and had it written on the calendars I gave them every two weeks. Of course, there were still some who said they, “didn’t know” about whatever they needed to have finished and turned in. Our son, also a teacher of 11th graders, had a parent come into his classroom at 7 AM, our son arrives at school at 6:00AM, and school starts at 7:20. The father was furious that our son gave his kid a zero due to unfinished work. The father was screaming and yelling; luckily, our son’s co -teacher called the principal. Our son showed the parent the calendar, board, email, and text that he had sent out so the students would know when the assignment was due. Then, the principal escorted the parent out. Anything could have happened that morning; the parent was so out of control, he could have had a gun, knife, baseball bat, who knows what. Teachers don’t have it easy!!
Love the dogs, corn, and quilts. 100 plus heat index today and all week. UGH.

The school is doing better on safety now.

Kathy – I’m so glad your son showed him the proof! I hate when somebody tells me they didn’t know. That tells ME they’re not really reading the blog and I would unsubscribe them if I knew how. From now on I will go over the checks carefully and will not accept those made out to Country Threads. I don’t care what it says on my home page – readers ask me all the time! I say it every single time I post patterns for sale. Ugh. Sorry – that was just another rant, wasn’t it? Ha!!

In this HOT weather, rants are good:) 105 heat index here in Central Ohio tomorrow. I HATE heat and humidity. UGH.

Great dog and quilt photos. I love seeing the corn photos. Those remind me of the Minnesota corn fields. I know what you mean about the check problem. After my mother passed I had a memorial check that had been made out to me and it was from my husband’s brother and his wife. I took it with me to MN and attempted to deposit it into my mother’s checking account. I signed the check and even showed the teller my ID. The gal (and she was not 20 something) said that it was against banking rules. I was so frustrated. I guess we’re not allowed to put money into someone else’s account. That is a dumb rule.

    1. Cynthia in Minnesota

Martha, it could be the Patriot Act that prevented the bank from the bank letting you deposit the check. This occurred after 9-11-2001. New banking regulations.

Anyone who hears the words, “hospice care is now needed “ knows the heartbreak of soon losing their loved one. Yes a card will brighten their days and I will look for one to send out. I remember when we explained to my MIL that she was not going to get better and her response back to us was “ You mean I will spend the rest of my life in this bed?” She hadn’t asked to get out of the bed in several days and she was an energizer bunny all her life so not like her to be stuck in a bed but I think she didn’t know she was. Thank you Mary for allowing us to reach across this country to give someone a ray of hope.

Kathy – the story about your mil could be any of us down the line – I am so afraid of being bedridden

      1. Kathy in western NY

Mary, it’s so sad when their heart is so weak at 92 , no medical intervention is going to bring it back strong. Thankfully she accepted she was too weak to get up but I thought the same thing. She was like you, worked on a farm, and sewed, knitted and we called her the energizer bunny cause she never stopped till a late bedtime. 9 days later we had her memorial service at the lovely church affiliated assisted living facility she called her home for the last 2 years of her life. She did enjoy the music, crafts, slower pace and serenity of it I must say.

Great quilts and pictures of dogs. Thanks again for having this blog. I know I look forward to reading it and the comments.

  8. Sunflower 🌻 from Michigan

    Mary,
Good Sunday morning to you and your readers.
So so hot here in Michigan with a few more days of it to come. I have been working in the garden from 6-9 am and then retreating to the house! I just finished weeding the entire garden. The flowers are really blooming and so beautiful. We should have a nice showing for the wedding.
Loved the dog pictures today! And quilts, wow.
I am hand quilting a baby quilt in my basement so nice and cool while working on that. I’ll send a photo when done.
My chickens have been digging holes in the dirt in their pen and laying in the holes to cool themselves. It’s like walking among land mines for me! I’ve been giving them cold watermelon rinds and ice cubes for cooling. They do have plenty of shade though. Their favorite is a head of cabbage on a stake in the ground. They eat at it all day.
Besides avoiding the heat, not much going on here. Have a great day! I’ll be tuning in to the game today. 🌻

    1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Sunflower, I remember when we had chickens and it was really hot we would cut a good sized end off a watermelon and freeze it, then give that to them. They loved it.

        Teresa,
I may try that! I also freeze corn kernels for them. Thanks 🌻

The problem may lie with your address at the end of the blog…address to Country Threads, etc. I know it must be nice to look for Country Threads in your stack to separate from Mary Etherington on Junk Mail…..Mary, I think I met you quite a few years ago at 4-H camp in Clear Lake….but now you are (in my mind) either Mary, Maruta’s friend or Mary at Country Threads, or if I am on Highway 18 west of Garner you are the big beautiful Red Barn! You have many names…but not necessarily Mary Etherington

  10. Jane from St Marys IA

I can relate to your check issue at the bank! We sell bulls & heifers & my hubby doesn’t pay any attention to what they put on the check so when I go to put it in the bank there is our cattle name & not his name! I’ve just started adding his name behind the wrong name & the bank doesn’t say anything. They do give me some weird looks but after banking there as long as we’ve had….they put it our account no problem. I do get disgusted however as I always tell him to make sure they make it out to him! I guess I should be grateful we sold the animal but sure would be nice to just see his name on the check!

Jane – thanks for your validation! I didn’t realize these young girls would have no idea who I was.

Mary, I asked Darrell about making turns with his Toro zero turn. He said making wide turns helps so much. When you have tight spaces he can’t and it tears it up like you said. He loves the zero turn so much.
Beautiful quilts and dogs 🐕 😻❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    Hi Mary,
I love your blog as always. I especially love the pictures of animals!!!! The picture of 3 dogs sleeping together makes me so so happy!!! I LOVE dogs!!!

Casey passed away 1 month ago, we have begun a search for another dog…
Canoli and Eunice are doing great!
I will send the card you requested.

Bea – yes, Bea, I hope you find another dog very soon! Your house must feel empty without Casey.

    2. Carla J in the mitten West Michigan

Bea, we miss those early babies of ours. May you treasure your memories of Casey and be blessed with the next cuddly friend to join you.
Chloe was the first English setter to join our family. When hubby retired from the Air Force he was ready to resume bird hunting and so a bird dog joined the gang. Waterfowl hunting followed and so Nugget came on board.
Max was my companion when the guys were off hunting. Ten maybe eleven pounds of drive, heart, and muscle who would intimidate the 130+ pound St. Bernard next door. Until the day they both were on the same side of the fence and neither one knew what to do.
Others have come and gone. Every one has their own special place in our memories and great stories to go with them.
Have a safe and wonderful week.

        Hi Carla

Wow what a wonderful time, when you had 3 dogs! It’s so wonderful that you and hubby could have 3 dogs.
Years ago we had 2 wire fox terriers and a jack russel mix😂
He would run away all the time but hubby and I loved him all the more…
I love that picture! I have never seen dogs sleeping together like that, so SWEET!
God bless you and your family ❤️
