Pam, 7-20-26

I looked for Pam in my sleep all night long so I got up about 6 and went outside again. I swear I looked in every possible place except the haymow but obviously I hadn’t because I didn’t find her.

Suddenly there she was by the playhouse! I grabbed her and brought her into the porch. She seemed very tired and had evidently drunk too much water because she threw up. She stayed in the porch when I left with the dogs for Hazel’s grooming appt.

When I got home I figured I couldn’t keep her trapped in the porch so I let her out and followed her. And then I realized I had not looked in all the places! There’s this old wainscot cupboard by the playhouse and it doesn’t even have a floor or back so it’s very cool. Sure enough Pam crawled in and laid down.

I told the groomer I’d like to pay for her appt since they had reserved time for her but they wouldn’t let me. Very kind and understanding of them, I’d say.

Hate when Hazel’s haircut is new – she looks like a drowned rat! Sort of like my own new haircuts!

My favorite Pam picture:

The texture was added intentionally

I think Pam will probably die today or tomorrow and I wish I could hold her during the inevitable ending but I respect her wishes to be alone. I will check on her continually. Written at 2:20 pm.

More Hoya plants:

More Hoyas tomorrow – who knew so many of us loved Hoya plants? I haven’t taken pictures of mine yet either.

Remember Yellow Brick Road? On the long arm today.

And this is for Josh’s mom who helps me with the goats and so much more.

Also finished all the blocks with that new floral I loved so much. What a disappointment in my choice of blocks!

Sigh. It’s been a trying day for sure. I can’t wait for it to be tomorrow so I can start over again.

Pam has had a very good and long life with you. You’ve loved her and she you. Hugs to you. Glad she’s with company.
Your yellow brick road quilt is beautiful. I love your cement birdbaths. I bet they are heavy. The Hoya plants are nice. I don’t keep any house plants myself, but my husband has about 20! He does not have a Hoya plant though maybe he should.
I am going blueberry picking tomorrow. I plan to eat as many as I possibly can!!
    Take care everyone. 🌻

So sorry about Pammie. They are so precious to us and every year my cat gets older makes me sad since I know she has had more years behind her than in front of her. She at least knows she has been loved . About haircuts the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is about a week but sometimes it never looks good.

My heart hurts knowing you are losing one of your pets. There are no words to comfort as it is just so hard. Most of us here have gone through it many times and we’ll always be here feeling your heartache.

  4. Gloria from CC

I feel so bad for Pam. She’s lived a loving long life. It’s heartbreaking to lose a fur baby.
I think Hazel looks very cute. Reminds me of a story. Pooh Bear #1 loved to go to the groomer. One time we got home from the groomer and I let Pooh out of the car on the driveway. He was strutting around showing off his new “do.” Bandit, our Norwegian Elkhound, walked over, lifted his leg and peed all over Pooh. Pooh turned around and looked at me with an expression that said “mom what just happened to me?” It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Animals – you gotta love them!

Gloria – I brought Pam to the porch where she has friends who love her. Now I’m just waiting – I don’t want her to disappear outside

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Gloria – obviously Bandit did not recognize PB#1 – haha!!! How’s the cat house going?

      1. Gloria from CC

The cat house is working out great. This fall we’ll insulate, walls, electrical etc. We’ve had service people at our place this summer who are incredulous that we have a building for our feral cats. Nikko comes in the lodge sometimes during the day. He’s my soulmate and has been since he was a kitten.

You must have been relieved when Pam showed up. It is weird how animals will crawl away if they are unwell.
My mom had a cat for over twenty years. As she got sick she’d lay in the grass in the sun, not wandering. Then she disappeared. They lived next to a field and my brother went looking for her. He found her body in that field but they shook their heads trying to imagine her going that far away. My brother always claimed a hawk had carried her off she had gotten so small. We’ll never know for sure. Minute lived that cat.
    I pray Pam doesn’t suffer.

Carolyn – I moved Pam into the porch where she has friends to console her /

Oh my goodness, you certainly did have a “trying” day yesterday. Comes with the territory. I will be sad for you when she is gone. I hope she is not suffering. She has had a long good life with you on the farm.

I don’t know how you fit it all in every day. I find myself sitting in between activities. Tried to nap yesterday but my body was not having it. I tackled attaching the binding to a quilt that was almost too big and heavy to wrestle under the domestic machine but I got her done! Whew The hand tacking will have to wait. It’s 12 large blocks with extensive applique’. What was I thinking?!

Cool down is here. Been home for a week it’s been so hot. I am going to lunch with some quilty friends.

I’m so very glad that you found Pam. You have been a very good mom to her and she loves you for that. My heart is braking for you….with tears in my eyes….it is so very hard to loose a fur baby, give yourself some grace. Poor Hazel, her cut looks really short. Some dogs hide after they get a trim. I have enjoyed the Hoya picture show, so many different ones. I sooooo love your blog and all your stories….keep up all that you do

  8. Laurie Mosley

Enjoyed seeing the pictures of the Hoya plants. I’ve never seen them before. My husband is the plant person, but he doesn’t have any of those. Like you I have had cats all of my life and when you’re 75 that’s quite a few although I think you have had more. And it’s so hard when they’re at the end of their lives to say goodbye. My oldest cat Ella died a few years ago and she was 19. And a great cat just a lot of fun and loving two. I know you will miss Pam, but I think you are doing things the right way by letting her go her own way.

I’m so glad you found where Miss Pam is hiding now. She was so beautiful in that picture! I am partial to calicos with Lucy and Penny. She loves you and knows you love her Mama. ❤️ I don’t remember if I told you but we found our neighbor’s cat, Stormy, in a stray cat shelter box I set up last winter. It had straw and catnip bits inside so I guess he felt comfortable. Very sad.

  10. Paula S.

I’m glad you know where to look for Pam when the time comes. She’s had a good life, thanks to you Mary.

Hazel may look like a drowned rat, but I’m sure she likes being much cooler without all the fur! My cairn terrier liked having a short haircut during the hot months and he was easier to bathe too.

Love the plant show! What fun!

  11. Sue in Marion, Indiana

I hate losing pets so much! Even when they’re very old and you know it’s time, it’s so hard to let them go.

Hazel is adorable even with the haircut! Hazel and Mortie get the prize for cutest pets ever!

    I don’t have a Hoya, but now I want one 😃

Off to set up for annual Quilters’ Hall of Fame Celebration! Hanging Judy Martin’s quilts this morning at the library and setting up the guild sale booth at 1st UMC where the guild show is held. I thought Judy was coming today but ran into her husband Steve when I took the welcome bags to the hotel last night! So honoree quilts will be hung today. Tomorrow in the second room at the library will be quilts from Judy’s guild members, a Studio Art Quilts Association (SAQA) exhibit and the QHF semiquincentennial challenge, “What Freedom Means to Me”. Fun will ensue! I hope!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – oh my gosh – how much fun you’ll have hanging quilts!!! I am jealous even tho I know how much work you’re looking at.

  12. Joy in NW Iowa

Fur babies are so special. I’m happy you found Pam.
I even am feeling sad about Ranger. He still thought he was little enough to sit in my lap! He was Devon’s true friend! Dogs are like that….they love you totally, unconditionally, for ever. He will always be missed!
Today is therapy day. I think Friday is my last day.
I think Hazel is cute, she looks like a puppy 💕
I’m happy you got some rain. We could use some soon!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – oh, Ranger! Sounds like Hank – he wants to sit on my lap! Hello!!! No! And poor Devon – what a loss for him, too. Won’t you be glad to be done with therapy?

  13. Lynette in Orlando

Oh Mary, my heart is with you with Pam. We love them so dearly. The consolation is they had a good life with us and were well provided for. Sending hugs to you. My cat is an excellent hider…… every vet appointment has the understanding that I may be canceling at the last minute as I cannot find her – and she doesn’t leave the house!!! Ha. They have always been most gracious about it. I love all the Hoyas — I just may have to get one – would look nice on my porch. Thank you for the quilts — so lovely. Still working on my sheep — I decided to do a little embroidery on it.

  14. Rita in Iowa

Mary glad you found Pam. It’s so hard to see our pets get old but she has had a good life on the farm and with you. Hazel looks like she is very cool with her fur cut.
Your quilts are wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
My mom had a Hoya plant and it now resides at my sister. I’m sure at least one of my sister has a cutting of it also.
Last week we power washed the shed, garage, and house. We live in a log home so it needs to be stained periodically. We decided that we can’t be getting up on scaffolding and ladders safely and so we are having it done. The contractors live locally and are a husband and wife. Live less than 5 miles from us.
Made jalapeño jelly yesterday. First time for me and turned out great.
Received 1.99 inches of rain yesterday. Under a tornado watch most of the afternoon. It is summer, right?

  15. Jo in Wyoming

I’m glad you found Pam. Knowing where she goes is a comfort in its self.
The flowers are beautiful. Mine bloomed a couple times, then died. No idea why.
I love Yellow Brick Road. Your colors are great. The quilt pictures are always fun to see.

I had a doctors appointment today. I saw the PA and he was so informative. My primary doctor was unavailable, so I saw the PA with hesitation. I’m on my 4th cold this year. I’ve had 2 colds in the last 20 years, so something is wrong. He was great and hopefully this issue will resolve soon. I’m so tired of being sick!!

I think Hazel looks like a puppy with that haircut. Loretta looks 20 years younger after she goes to the Spa.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – yes, something is wrong and you need to get it figured out. I have seen PAs before and think they might be better with patients than the dr. I hope I can get YBR bound today although it’s much cooler today so I won’t mind working outside. More mowing!

  16. Alice in SW Ohio

I agree, so glad you found Pam. You’ve been a wonderful pet mom to her & she’s had the best life with you! We’re just never ready to let them cross that rainbow bridge.
Ron & I leave tomorrow for the lake to pet sit while my friend & her husband go on vacation. I spent Monday packing up the breakable things for the flooring installers only to get a call that they won’t be here until Thurs! Seems that one group called off work on Mon! I guess too much weekend!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – oh, that sounds familiar – why can’t these businesses come when they say they’ll come? I say it’s because they’re men and don’t know how to budget their time or stay organized. Men are all procrastinators!!! And I live with one of the best.

      1. Alice in SW Ohio

Mary, I agree that men certainly aren’t as good as women when it comes to getting things done on time. I don’t like waiting until the last minute to get something done! This situation I believe with calling off on Monday might have been a little too much celebrating over the weekend! When I know I have a deadline to get something done, I make a plan & I get it done! I got everything done, plus baked & iced a German Chocolate cake for Ron to celebrate his birthday. Celebrating his birthday a bit late because he was sick.

  17. Diana in Des Moines

God is holding you and Pam in his loving arms tonight. Such a hard thing to lose our pets. 2 years ago I sat up with Poppy (my Siamese cat) until he crossed over. Longest night of my life.
    Hugs

  18. Beryl Hoff

It’s so hard to lose a furry baby. You have been a good ‘mom ‘ ti her or she wouldn’t keep coming back. I will be praying for both of you.

  19. Sara in indiana

I’m so glad you found Pam! Cats sure can hide well. All our cats are inside cats, and there are times we have turned the house inside out looking for them, but not found them. Then later on they appear and are fine, and indifferent to our worry—lol.
