Whew, I’m glad this day is over. The solo went fine but when I told Brian how nervous I was he suggested we do something together the next time the solo issue comes up. I’m thrilled!

When I got home I quickly mowed by the barn and got ready to watch the soccer match. Bob brought Molly and I sat thru that whole thing, fighting sleep, and just when he came to pick her up, Spain scored and I missed the whole thing. Dang.

Tomorrow I’m taking Hazel to be groomed and I also made an appointment for Pam who is over 20 years old and doesn’t want me to comb her – I’m sure it pulls on her delicate skin. She lays right outside my door and many times I have to look carefully to see if she’s breathing. Last night I was so mad at her because she sneezed all over what I was working on and then I reminded myself how bad I would feel when she wasn’t here any longer.

And of all nights I cannot find her!! I have spent hours searching for her – our appointment is at 9 am and where is Pam? I hope she’s ok – I saw her as I was leaving for church this morning and not since.

I have gotten many Hoya pictures and it will be a fun post although if you aren’t a Hoya lover you’ll be bored to tears.

One reader quilt from Mary H:

And here are some projects that Connie is working on.

Will be made into a bag
Another project started
Isn’t this so nice? But out of my comfort zone.

I’m going to post a few Hoya pictures tonight – keep your fingers crossed that I can keep them all straight and posted and not repeated!

RAGBRAI started today – I haven’t heard how many riders this year – but they’ve got a hot day to ride tomorrow. For those who don’t know, RAGBRAI stands for Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. Who would have ever thought all those years ago in 1973 that we’d all be so familiar with those initials now and not think a thing of them – haha! The largest daily rider count was over 50,000 in 2023. Just think about that.

I’m watching the weather and we are looking at 105 heat index tomorrow!!!

I have never gone to bed in over twenty years without Pam being here in the house. 🙁

Mary, please keep us updated on Pam.
Not much newsworthy here. I live a pretty ho-hum life right now. My nephew came and helped me clean. He likes having a little spending money, so he comes nearly every Monday. It’s a win for me!
Stay cool during this heat and smoke!

Another post….sandy’s dog, Ranger was really having difficulty breathing overnight and this morning. two of the kids came to see him again (they were there Saturday too) and they thought he was ready too. Devon and Allison loved on him Friday night and Saturday. Everyone is sad. Fur babies are so special! You get them as a puppy and whoosh, they are at the end of their life. Ranger was Devon’s best friend! Ranger would whine to come sit with him while he was doing home work! We would laugh, it was so cute! It was like please, please let me sit with you!

Our son and family had a cat that never went outside for over 20 years. One day someone opened the door and cat bolted. They all looked and called neighbors etc. but after a few days they had to tell the kids that cat is gone forever. It went on for about a week when our son opened the door and cat walked in like it was a normal event. Of course, he asked the cat “where have you been” but no answer. So you just never know. Pam might just surprise you.

Mary I’m wondering if you are not aware of the pause, reverse and forward buttons on your remote for your tv. I use mine all the time! Press pause, leave and come back, press pause button again and it picks right up where you stopped it. Works great for me when watching something I really want to see and get interrupted to leave it (like for potty breaks. lol!) Check your remote and your manual (if you still have it, haha) and I think you will really like this feature. I think it’s pretty basic to most tvs now. Mine is several years old and has it. Just thought I’d mention it.
Your blog is the BEST!!! I hope Pam returns soon. We had Tiger and I worried so when he wandered.
Hope all are safe with the weather, flooding and fires going on. Certainly a hard time for all! God bless!

Poor Pam. Maybe she heard you making plans for her. They especially the cat carrier!!
Hope you found her this morning.
Hazel will be so cute when she gets groomed!
I was glad the winning goal by Spain was made by someone off the bench, Ferran Torres. Cool!
You’ll have fun joining Brian in your music duo. A win!!
We are still smoky here, but not as bad as it was.
I played with my slow stitching while soccer was on. I finally bought some big eye needles. I struggled that first day I tried. Thought I’d end up asking my granddaughter to pre-thread my needles. Does anybody remember hearing that at quilting bees they’d pay young girls to thread needles in advance for pennys?? I can relate to that.

I, too, hope that you found Pam. I can’t imagine life without cats, but it’s hard when they get frail.

Hope Pam came home. Saturday night our son was competing in a horse show, we were both supposed to go watch but one of the cats didn’t come in when we were closing the barn so my husband stayed to keep trying to find her. Finally at 8:30 she strolled out of the veggie garden ready to go to the barn. She was hiding in the garden, I guess not ready to go in yet. We knew I’d be home after dark so that’s why he stayed. Son came in first in his class-we’re so proud.

I love Connie’s projects. I sure hope we get to see the finished bag. I think it’s going to be adorable.
Keeping my fingers crossed that you find Pam and that she is okay.
I knew your solo would be great. Have a great day, Mary and stay cool….everyone else too.

  9. Suzanne

Oh, my goodness, we’re all going to be holding our collective breaths until Pam shows up. Hope it’s soon and that she is okay.

  10. Cindy K

I hope Pam comes home. Wouldn’t think she wonder too far in this heat. Hank doesn’t even want to go outside in the heat. When he comes back inside , he lays on the floor and falls asleep with his face over the air conditioner vent.
I also missed the last play of soccer. Fell asleep right at the end. Didn’t even know who won until you mentioned it. Has been too much going on here between harvest-cleaning house for company-then company and lots of cooking for nearly 2 weeks and cleaning after they left. I need some me time!
Looks like Connie has been having a lot of fun with her purchases. Sounds like you handled playing at church just fine.

Mary prayers that Pam showed up. Maybe she thought she’d get a shot or get shaved down to her skin. I know older cats have trouble grooming themselves. So sad when our pets get old. As I write this I have tears in my eyes missing my two cats who I had to put down 6 years 1 months ago. One had diabetes that they couldn’t get under control the other I never should have put down. He really missed my Henners. It was so difficult because it was during Covid & I had to hand them both off & couldn’t be with them. They probably wondered when I would come back or why I’m not coming back
Ok, now I’m sobbing. When does the hurt go away ?
As a child we had one dog that I don’t recall being attached to & cats too but never like my two boys I had as an adult. I really loved them. I just quit now….so sad & will have to turn on happy music or my day is shot

I hope that you have found Pam….did she hear you talking about taking her in. Oh it’s going to be sooooo hot today and I feel so bad for all those riders on RAGBRAI today. I hope that got an early start. everyone in Iowa stay cool.

  13. Fran Dixon SW Iowa

Oh I hope Pam is ok. Prayers for Pam to be found and doing ok.

The heat is taking it’s toll on me.

I did get some time in the sewing room yesterday. Picked out another quilt from the stack to quilt on the long arm. The desire is there to do that but my body is saying not today. We shall see. Cool down coming tomorrow. Maybe that will help. Today is supposed to be the worst then storms. We need rain.

  14. Diane in Colorado

Oh, Mary, I do hope Pam showed up! So hard when they are off wandering. Don’t they know we worry?

Beautiful quilts and projects! And plants! Wow! One day, I will get busy quilting again. For now, I’ll focus on NICU resting gowns and Angel Baby pouches as I have one gown hanging here and 3 more coming from a friend in MN.

  15. Joy in NW Iowa

Sure hope you found Pam. Jay just left for his walk. It is 7:10 am and 77 degrees. Ugh! My knees hurt today….not a normal thing at all….sure hope it isn’t going to storm. It is suppose to cool off, maybe that’s it.
I love Connie’s projects! They are so pretty!
Hoya is really pretty. I don’t have any. I usually kill indoor plants. Ha
I’m glad your soloing went good! Figured.
    Any new card recipients??
And, I agree, if no one responded to your blog, I’d quit too. I love to read about everyone’s day or week…who cares…we r friends!

Joy – I’m waiting for someone to announce an important birthday or life experience.

I’m so sorry about Pam being missing. I know how worrying that can be. Best wishes.

  17. Elizabeth

I was talking to my son on the phone as his wife was watching the final- he kept running up the stairs to get updates and was very excited when Spain won!

I hope Pam made her way back to you Mary, and that you were able to sleep. It’s so hard when our animal friends are aging.

  18. Sandy McPherson

Hi Mary, l am not a sports fan, l like ice skating, even if l could not stand on ice! This week I have successfully avoided Taylor swift wedding and soccer ⚽️, so that’s a win! I hope pam turns up ok,pets are a worry, but give a lot of joy too! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  19. Candy

Oh, I hope Pam is OK! She’s been such a beautiful part of your family as long as I’ve been reading, and I guess well before that. I hope she shows up by morning!

I so hope you find Pam and that she is ok! Poor thing. I tell myself the same thing when I get annoyed at Darrell! I would miss him so much if he was gone. I didn’t have to kill him after all. The lady at Hopes Closet called, she found my vintage dishes he donated by mistake. All is well again 🤭. It only took 3 days of anxious waiting, even thought of applying for a job there just to look for them 🤣.
With the dreadful heat and humidity I just don’t feel like doing much. Hurry up Fall! I know it’s miserable for the baby bluebirds too and I expect them to fledge this week. Hugs from Lucy and Penny !

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pamela – yay!!! You got your dishes back!!!! Recently I told Rick that I’d feel bad after he was gone that I was mad that he mowed something off but right now I’m still mad.

    2. Janet S

Pamela, I had to read twice to figure out if Darrell is a pet or husband. So, he’s a husband who is still upright and breathing. Luckily everything has worked out. Enjoy your dishes. This spring I was furious at my husband for cutting my clematis vine way down because he wanted to power wash the trellis because it was dirty. Who cares???? He washed the paint off in places. Luckily the vine survived and covered his mess. Life goes on. Have a good day everyone and hope the weather breaks.

      1. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

🤣 Oh my! I think cutting the clematis vine just to wash a trellis is something I would have a hard, very hard, time getting over! One of the worst things Darrell did was he was straightening a vintage dish hanging above the kitchen sink and it fell, shattered into pieces. It was a keepsake my Grandparents had made of their likenesses on a trip. They were made of bits of felt, netting, pearl earrings, buttons glued to the plates, looking like they were from the early 1910s era. I treasured them and then it was gone. That hurts. There have been other accidents and he is not deliberate but I am always telling him be careful! The workers at the donation center all were making comments about he was in trouble, he was gonna be sleeping on the couch, I was going to kill him and such before I even said it!🤣

    The quilts are beautiful tonight.
I hope you find Pam. Our pets are so important.
The Hoyas are incredible. Mine bloomed a couple times then crooked. No idea why.
I got a kit that has cross stitch in it. After trying for an hour, I didn’t have even 1 stitch…so, I’m embroidering the x-stitch parts! It’s my quilt, so I’ll do it my way.
As a soccer mom, I found the final game exciting.
