Where did the day go? 7-18-26

I don’t even know what I accomplished today – evidently not much. I let the young hens mix with the old hens and hoped my big rooster would leave them alone so I made many trips to the barn. One thing I did do is enlarge my design wall in the quilt shop.

I started working with this fabric.

Hank spent the night and we went to the field which he loves.

And the goats
The chickens
Mortie
I got him a toy for aggressive chewers!
So he wouldn’t chew up the stuffed toys

Reader photos, etc

Here’s the cat fabric that I forgot to post:

I found it – here’s the panel I quilted last year for the porch table.
Rose took this picture in 2016

Did you watch The Fever game tonight against the Liberty? I was worried for awhile but then they hit their stride and won handily.

Is this quilt Turning Twenty?

If you have a Hoya plant, send me a picture. I’m going to hold the pictures for a single post.

Margaret is gone tomorrow so I’ll be playing alone. I’ve been a church pianist for 68 years but playing a solo at age 78 is scary! 😬(gritting my teeth)

Love the table quilt and you will do an amazing job playing just pretend she’s there in your head……

    Mary,
A much better weather day today. Only in upper 70s and not smelly at all. Ran up to Tractor Supply store to buy a new water dish for the chickens. The old one sprung a leak. Bought a few packets of seeds for fun.
I really enjoyed the England victory yesterday. Soon tuning in to the Final.
I am working on a quilt. It’s your Novelty Quilt pattern. I have the big pieces cut and am ready to cut the sashing pieces next. This fabric I have had forever! So excited to use it.
Hope your playing went well. Hank looks to me like he is saying to Mortie, “Get up, let’s play,” He is a lucky boy to visit your farm.
Have a great week everyone! 🌻

That picture of Hank with the goats is so funny … I just imagine Dottie saying “Watch out, Buster! I’m keeping an eye on you!” I love your porch table topper, and just now I enlarged it for a better look and realize it’s not only flowers, but birds too … beautiful! I’ve been working on a new quilt using lots of older floral prints with yellow flip’n’fold corners. I’ll send a picture when I get the top done. I love using up some stash! Have a great Sunday!

By the way, everybody from both teams came out to hug everybody at the end. Soccer seems to have the best sportsmanship I’ve seen all year. I love to watch all the end ceremonies after the end of the games. This World Cup has shown that sports brings people together. Wow is all I can say.

  5. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Good morning. I think that porch quilt on your table is beautiful. Glad you found it. Of course we all love Hank, he seems to love everybody. Poor Keeper, he wants to be first, too!!
I have a few house plants on my kitchen table I need to repot. Gotta get at it.
I forgot the World Cup game last night between France and England. I tuned it a little over halftime. What a game!! The announcers were the best I have heard. I kept kicking myself for missing it. England led at 4-0 at halftime. France rallied. “England won in an absolute goalfest to finish third…” Final 6-4 Fantastic. I may watch the repeat on Peacock, but then It would be in Spanish and I’d miss those great announcers on Fox. I never thought I’d say that. Today’s game is at 3. But, I wanted England to win.

Fun photos of Handsome Hank. The caption on the goat one could be- “What do you think you’re doing?” And the one with Mortie- “Ahh, don’t give up now!”
Your panel table topper is so very pretty and very summery. The sports quilt reminds me of my great nephew. He lives in a small town and plays all the sports. I’ll have to use Google Lens and see if a pattern comes up. That would be a great graduation quilt for him in a couple of years.

Yes….I watched the game last night, I was worried but what a blow out. I water all my planted in the early morning before it gets to hot. I’m soooo very tired of being hot. This morning much better….low humidity and a breeze. I planted a new Serviceberry tree in the back yard and have to keep it well watered. Hank is such a good dog, looks like he gets along with all your critters! I’m sure that you did beautifully at church with your music. I went to a retreat the the Quilted Steeple….what a great shop! Glad that you and Connie had such a fun day. Have a great rest of your day!!!

Your quilt panel is just beautiful. It makes a lovely table cloth. I love your enlarged design wall. Mine is too small because I load it up with unfinished projects, but I love it. It’s right across from my bed in my room. I can lay in bed and see my work (unfinished) LOL Wish I had a Hoya plant, but I don’t. The only house plant I have is a sickly Christmas cactus. It’s outside on the porch and I have promised it more water and some fertilizer, hoping it will bloom for the holidays. Can’t wait to see what you make with the large butterfly fabric. It’s my favorite.

  9. Deb in Idaho

Hank is a well rounded dog for being young, I bet he has energy to spare. I love the porch panel. Very hot and smoky today,so I will be staying in, maybe a trip to the garden later. I think you will do fine at church today. Always wanted to play piano but my folks couldn’t afford it. Everyone stay safe

  10. Connie R. In N, Wis.

Another very smoky day here in far Northern Wisconsin. The temperature has been comfortable but, can’t really spend much time outside as our air quality has been in the very unhealthy to hazardous levels for the past week or so. Rain was predicted for Friday but, never materialized. Hopefully the forecast for rain tomorrow is correct.

I went to a quilt show yesterday. So inspiring to see all the beautiful quilts. They has a quilter’s resale market there too where I purchased a couple quilt kits and fabric pieces. Like another commenter said, I will need to live to 200 to finish everything I already have on hand. I enjoyed every minute.

  11. Fran Dixon SW Iowa

The heat is oppressive. Even the dogs don’t like it. We have a breeze this morning. And hope–tomorrow is supposed to be the worst then a cool down coming for the week. Maybe I can get something done outside.

I finished the long arming yesterday on cue. Glad to have this done. Now I wrestle with putting on binding! I am dragging my feet.

I know Sunday music will be wonderful and you will maybe say “whew” with a sigh of accomplishment.

BTW, you once said reading the comments was just as fun as the blog and I tend to agree.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Fran – without a doubt! If it gets to the point there are no comments, I quit. So thank you!

  12. Jeanine from SE Iowa

May – You will do fine playing by yourself. Yesterday I was deleting some old emails, and I ran across an email from you with a link to a funeral that you played for back in 2024. I listened to you and Margaret doing the music before the funeral. It was beautiful! I did not delete that email as I will listen to it again sometime. I wanted to take piano lessons so badly as a child, but our family did not have the means to pay for lessons. There were six of us kids and we lived on a very small farm in MN, up where the soil is sandy. My mom could play by ear, and I tried plunking around on the piano as I grew up. Could do a little if the hymn was in the key of C. You are very blessed to have such talent.
Going to be hot this week. Our son is coming today and will work on building walls in the new house this coming week. It will be a busy week.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanine – my mom bought our first piano off a truck that drove around the country to farm places – she had 600 laying hens and she used that money – a couple hundred dollars. I have no natural talent – it’s all learned from an excellent very fussy and particular piano teacher. When I got off the bus there was an apple and a timer set for 30 min on the piano. I had no choice but to learn. My very first lessons were 50 cents!

  13. Henners 🐱

Golden retrievers are such fun dogs. My experience is the more purebred they are the more neurotic….my opinion only in caring for dogs
I looked up your Flight if Beauty fabric. Beautiful fabric in this line. I must not order any !!!! I’ll need to live to be 200 to get thru my stash & kits at the rate I’m going.
Another hot dsy here in Mn 🥵
I’ve never watched women’s basketball but I did watch last 8-10 min of game & it was fun & it was the Fever who you follow. What’s with the long dark sock on C Clark …protection? I better post before I lose what I wrote

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Henners – so many players wear those socks – something about circulation? I agree all purebred dogs are neurotic and that includes Hank – he is so needy and poor Keeper feels left out. Mutts are always healthier and better behaved. Hazel is the only purebred I’ve ever had and you know what she’s like!!!!!

      1. Henners

Yes, I recall when you got Hazel & what a problem she was. She even but you in the butt once (maybe) and got kicked out of puppy school ?
I’m sure Keeper gets jealous but seems like such a good sport with all the visiting dogs you take in.
I agree Heinz 57 dogs are bettered in temperament or majority are. A friends daughter is getting a poegle or poodle beagle mix puppy on Saturday. Never heard of that breed but pics show they can be cute.
Too much inter-breeding (is that a word) in my opinion BUT I’m certainly no expert regarding cross breeding.

  14. Suzanne

That quilt looks like Turning 20 to me, but I have a similar pattern with a different name and it reminds me of that one, too. If I can keep it in my brain, I’ll dig out my patterns this afternoon.
I used to play piano at church sometimes. Loved playing with the organist because you couldn’t hear anything I did over the organ anyway, LOL. ~ Suzaanne in Michigan

  15. Joy in NW Iowa

Love all the pictures! Hank is so fun! Such a golden dog! Sandy’s ranger is needing pain pills and then he wants to walk, go for rides in the golf cart, all the normal stuff. But, if they don’t give him pain pills, he hyperventilates. And that isn’t good.
Suppose to be a hot day today. Ugh
You will be fine solo! I have every confidence in you!
    Have a good Sunday!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – Hank is a wonderful dog but when he’s here Keeper is very anxious that he might get left out – you know he’s my shadow. And Hank is pushy – always has to be first and walks in front of me so it’s a challenge at times. But I love him and he’s always welcome here.

  16. Meredith in Cincinnati

Watched all the Fever games this week. You’re right, yesterday’s didn’t start well, but they really looked great in the second half! Love Kelsey Mitchell!

  17. Laurie Mosley

Good for you for being willing to still play the piano for The Church at our age! My piano teacher was the organist at the Baptist Church. She would often tell me “God gave you musical talent so you could serve in the church“. I don’t play in church now, but I used to accompany my husband when he did solos. I love the table runner quilt, beautiful

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Laurie – you’re right – I always say that it takes everybody to make up a healthy church and everybody has to do what they can do – I can play the piano so that’s my contribution. And there’s nobody else to do it.

      1. Kathy in western NY

Pianists come very hard to find even in our town with a music based university as committing to every Sunday is difficult for many. Our organist has been there for over 8 years, is amazing and a must for our services as we miss her terribly when she isn’t there. She gets a huge round of applause at the end when she plays after the benediction. Mary you have a talent that I hope your church cherishes as we pay our organist as she is such an added benefit to have on Sundays and never want to lose her.
Farm market across the street is having a vendor craft sale today with a food truck with lobster rolls. Good eating day ! Corn on the cob has been excellent tasting.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – as I’ve probably mentioned, I am not paid – I have never been paid and nobody wants to fill in because they’d have to commit themselves and they won’t. So I continue to know that this is my service to God and my part at church. There are times like this morning thst I wish I didn’t have to attend – it’s a job for me.

  18. Kathryn Souza

Hope all goes well with your solo today. Even though you know that your congregation brothers and sisters wouldn’t mind if you make a mistake, it is still a matter of pride. So deep breaths and good luck.

  19. Angie from Baltimore

I love the stained glass fabric the colors are gorgeous. In Baltimore we are getting smoke from the Canadian fires. It looks foggy here and with that and 90’s with high humidity staying inside is the lesson for the day. I feel for those people dealing with them. I have been sorting out and wondering why I have bought so much STUFF. Answer? Because I wanted it and since I don’t drink except a Old Orchard now and then I can afford some BUT sorting out takes forever since I look at something then remember where I bought it and it goes into the save pile and so it seems I take it from one place and it goes to another place and not out the door

That is Turning Twenty. Hank is so good with all the other animals. He is such a great dog! The panel for the porch table is so pretty.

  21. Shirley Andersen Smith

    I love your porch panel.
I love Hanks adventures too. Maybe a new book???

  22. Carol in Texas

I love that quilted panel. I’m so glad you found it. Isn’t Hank a wonderful dog! So great that he can come and play in your world now and again.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carol – Michele often wonders if she’d win the custody battle – haha!!

  23. Judy AZ also

I couldn’t remember what a Hoya plant is so looked it up online – very long-lived, and not readily available for purchase. So you are lucky to have yours, and Connie’s cuttings. Geese at the pond, and Mortie and Hank with their ginger- colored fur – love them all!
