Poor Keeper! 4-30-25

The poor sweet guy is so embarrassed and so ashamed! He slept in the van last night so now you can just imagine how that smells. I’ll be getting it detailed but not quite right away. Haha! We gave him a very thorough bath with hydrogen peroxide, Dawn and baking soda but he hates water and would NOT let us rinse him so he’s running around with white residue all over him. Now what?

More great Bullseye quilts coming your way!

More reader quilts:

Would you like me to post these measurements when I have time? Georgetown Circle – similar to Best of All but still different. Block is only 8”. Best of All is 12”.

I can do this when I finish posting all the Bullseyes.

Last choir practice tonight until next September. I’ll miss it but I won’t miss it.

P.S. You’ll think I’m really off the wall but has anyone seen a plastic bowl like this?

It’s the dumbest thing – I believe I’ve had this silly bowl for over 40 years, it’s always in use, is in perfect shape and it’s the first one I reach for. I have beautiful bowls – both new and antique yet this is the stupid bowl I use! Anybody have one or know anything about the manufacturer located in Minneapolis? How can it still be in such perfect shape – it’s in the dishwasher many times a week. Do you have a favorite but homely bowl?

Please post the info on both of your blocks. Your bowls were called “Cameo” and would include your larger bowl with the handle and 2 more that nested inside. Some of the sets came with a matching strainer. They are not dishwasher safe and I believe they stopped making them around 1965 or so. I love my oversized harvest gold Tupperware bowl that I got in 1976 as a bridal gift. It has served our family popcorn or Chex mix on many movie nights. Poor keeper, I sure hope he smells less with each passing day. I did enjoy the picture of him digging his way to China, but in the air.

Poor Keeper. Another blogger has a recipe for removing skunk spray from dogs. Her blog is BeeHavenAcres.blogspot.com The one she talks about her Skunk Kit is called Smellovision. You can search for it with the search magnifying glass in the upper right corner of her blog, it was a couple of years ago. Her kit includes Tecnu as a pre-treatment (it really helps get the skunk oil off), then in the bucket you put 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide; 1/4 cup baking soda; 1 teaspoon Dawn dishwashing liquid. Mix the bucket ingredients in the bucket and use full strength to wash the dog. Rinse. You can follow up with your favorite dog shampoo. I am sure it works. It sure beats smelling skunk for days. Poor boy!!! Have a great day tomorrow. Kara

I’m loving all of the Bullseye quilts, and I stopped to study the one with the gold inner border — and I am captivated by the vent cover {?} just below it. It is absolutely gorgeous, and I would love to have a dozen of them 🙂 🙂 It reminds me a bit of a birdcage shape. Is it for the heating system? Or is it something else?

    Hi Mary
I know it’s not funny about Keeper and the Skunk, but I have to laugh. You have the patience of an Angel, all the antics of all the animals, you are amazing!

I just read your letter to my husband and he said ‘oh Joy’

I pray the smell goes away quickly, the quilts are all so so beautiful! Your blog puts a smile on my face. Thankyou😍💜

I love seeing all the bullseye quilts. So many color combinations as well as settings, quilting ideas & borders. The t shirt quilt pictured caught my attention. I’m working on one now for a friend’s daughter. Spent a better part of the day quilting it. Almost done. Ugh! There has to be a better (easier) way to quilt a lap size quilt at home. Frequent breaks sure help. Hope Keeper is soon scent free. What a stinker!

I have a green mixing bowl with a spout that I saved Sego Milk coupons for back in the 60’s. My Mom broke hers so I gave her mine to use, I talked my Dad out of it around 2004 several years after Mom died and a couple of years before he did. So whenever I use it now I think of my parents.
I hope your vehicle doesn’t smell from Keeper and that he is tolerable to be around.
    Love all the Bullseye Quilts!

I feel for you with Keeper getting skunked. Three years ago our dog took a direct hit. His white chest was dark yellow. It happened at bed time of course. I cleaned him according to something on line. He still really smelled. We have a creek that he loves. Every time he went for a swim he smelled
It was at least six months before the smell was completely gone. My favorite bowl is a 2 quart pyrex bowl. It has a handle and a pout spout I was able to find one with a plastic lid, so even better. Great quilt show as always.

Thanks again for the great Bullseye Quilt parade. Every one is a beauty. I see the Baby Bullseye quilt pictured too. I remember buying the pattern from you and, now I need to dig it out and make the small size.
I look forward to you posting the info for the 8” block. I really like how yours turned out with, what looks like, reproduction fabrics. The finished quilt is going to be so pretty.

I hope Keeper gets cleaned up soon! My favorite bowl is a Tupperware large fix n mix bowl. Great for potato salad or popcorn. I got them , a yellow and a green, from eBay back in the 90s. They will probably outlast everything!
We had severe thunderstorms last night but only a couple of branches down.

  10. Beryl BC

Maybe Keeper can get rinsed off in the rain, if he hasn’t already.
I’ve enjoyed the Bullseye quilts. I’m drawn to the one today with the yellow and multi-color border. I like yellow quite a bit, but don’t seem to use it often or have a lot on hand.
We, too, have some favorite plastic bowls. One is large and is designated as the popcorn bowl. The other is a 2 cup measure from the 1960’s. It came in a box of stuff my parents got at a trade show. They never sold them, but it was the scrambled egg bowl then and now, even with the curved partly melted spot on the back. I do remember the Shamrock plastics brand; I think I’ve seen that bowl before in white.

Now where else on earth could you find a discussion about bowls, quilts, and skunky dogs? Mary, thank you for bringing the sunshine on this gloomy day. I hope Keeper gets his joyful spirit back soon. Thanks for the colorful gallery of Bullseye quilts. The one with the denim background really caught my eye.

The most-used bowl in my kitchen is the largest of a set of three stainless steel bowls that was a wedding present from my sister. It has been used so much the bottom ’rounded out’ and if you don’t hold on to it while you mix things, it will spin around like a top! Another bowl I used a lot for family get-togethers is the yellow bowl from the “vintage” Pyrex set. It has held a lot of potato salad in its day. Oh, and I’d better not forget the big stoneware bowl that I used in my “Mother Earth” years to mix and proof 4 loaves of bread at a time.

Well, that was a walk down memory lane. Happy May Day to everyone and I hope you enjoyed the virtual bouquet of dandelions and violets I left on your door! Kris in WI

I just looked on eBay and they have a mixing bowl like your different color for 47.00 plus shipping and says it is from the 60’s.
I have a mixing bowl that I use for everything and rarely put it away as I will be taking it out of the cupboard again.
Poor keeper. Such an assault on his ego. Skunk probably felt the same way.

Hi Mary, It has been a while since I have responded but hopefully it will settle down. My youngest son was
sprayed when we were at my folks’ farm. Mom got a jar of her tomato juice from the basement and washed him with it in the wash tub outside. It worked. I use my, it used to be green or yellow color back early on,
Tupperware bowl(big mixing one) a lot. Also the big Thatsa bowl and its smaller bowls for popcorn. There is one on ebay from purpledoorstore pink in color 1960’s for $44.97 with $7.67 ground shipping. Very nice quilts. Fun to see them. We are getting rain this morning. Thank you for blogging.

  14. Jacque

I think it’s an interesting, if not a beautiful, bowl. But I love it and I would use it all the time, too.
And I’m not crazy about the bullseye quilt, so different strokes for different folks😅.

  15. NancyTD

Fun to see all the bullseye quilts. They are all so different and awesome with their fabric choices. Thanks to all for sharing.
I have an 8 inch square tupperware with lid that I freeze cookies or muffins in. My son’s comment was that it must be as old as he is! LOL! It always gets returned when I bring them something. Nice stuff not always til I ask.
Still working on yard work. Just nice to be outside.
Thanks ahead of time for drafting the patterns.

  16. ChristieB

Poor Keeper! And, poor Mary for having to try and “de-skunk” him. Can you hold your breath long enough to bathe him? So far we haven’t gotten sprayed. We seem to have several black and white smelly “cats” around, if I forget to bring my cat’s bowl in at night, we will have one that comes and finishes off what Goldie doesn’t eat. They startle me when I see one. It really bothers me if I see one in the day time, cuz I know they must be rabid if they are out during the day. Ick!

  17. Fran Dixon

    Love the quilts–all of them!

I have always heard tomato juice for skunky dogs. Tomato juice is not just for bloody mary(s). Ha

And I too love bowls. Yes I have a favorite or two. I don’t have a lot of cabinet space however.

  18. Sheryl Harrison

Poor Keeper! I live in town but when I had dogs and put them out at night, sometimes I could smell a skunk. I don’t think it was close but I would think how horrible it would be if one of the dogs got sprayed. I feel sorry for Keeper and you too!

I love the bullseye quilts. And the sweet little dog sitting on one of the quilts.

  19. Kris Gavin

    Hey Mary —

Oh your sweet Keeper… have you ever heard of a product called “Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover”? It is a miracle for sure… We have used it on Bruce, several times. That won’t help with Keeper being so unsure about the rinsing,, but it really does knock out the odor…
Love all the bullseye quilts… so much fun to see them all… Thanks for sharing your life… I look forward to your post everyday!

Kris – I’m going to order this so I have it on hand and I’m going to work with Keeper in a kiddie pool so he might be able to get over his fear of water. He certainly has some quirks.

  20. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Love the Bullseye quilts, especially with the. Mixed colors in the borders, like black or denim, and even the one where it’s all different colors.
I can relate about your beloved bowl. I have a Rubbermaid large mixing bowl, with a handle and rubber grips on the bottom. I had to replace it as my original got tossed in a move by mistake. I looked all over for the new one! I bet you’re glad it’s made in the USA. That’s always a good sign i think.

  21. Alice in SW OH

Poor Keeper! I feel so bad for him! Hopefully you will be able to rinse him off soon. He must be miserable. Boots finally has his cone off after 2 wks & the eye surgery seems to be a success. His surgeon was pleased. I do wish they’d told me the antibiotics they gave him could upset his system! Pumpkin mixed with his kibbles once again has helped. We’ve been having storms & April was a very wet month. Last I heard over 7″ of rain! Will plant flowers as soon as the danger of frost is over. Impatient baskets have to be hung from the eves or the deer will eat everything down to ground. So far they don’t eat Geraniums, maybe the smell? Love all the Bullseye quilts, so pretty & colorful. I’ve not made one but I definitely want to as soon as I clear up some older projects.

  22. Gloria from CC

I looked up your plastic mixing bowl from Shamrock Neatway. It’s 2.5 quarts and originally was part of a set of 3 from the 1960’s. The two other bowls did not have a spout and were smaller in size.
Yesterday, Boo and Christmas were sleeping together in one of their beds. They’re best friends now. What a relief.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Gloria – they’re friends now???? Oh, how I wish Fluffybun would get over herself!!!! It’s exhausting for us – because Hazel thinks she’s the sheriff and sprints after the dust up every time – resulting in me yelling and scaring everybody in the house! I hadn’t had time to look up the silly bowl – I don’t think I ever had the set but I have no idea where this came from or when it became part of my life – haha! From the 60’s – obviously I never throw anything away.

      1. Gloria from CC

Fortunately for us they are best friends now. Christmas has taken the place of Emmett for Boo’s affections. We were really worried. We kept telling Boo – you’re the one who brought Christmas to us!!!

  23. Denise

Dear Mary, would love the pattern please. Your blocks really appeal. Wonderful quilts on show as well.

  24. Li

Can you check with the Vet for anything that can calm Keeper down for a quick rinse? It sounds like a miserable situation for the moment. Such a sweet dog.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Li – good idea – Millie is seeing the vet and I’ll ask.

  25. Nancy Schulz

Look forward to seeing a post of measurements for that 8″ block..so many fabric options! Love yours. Thanks.

  26. Cindy K

Just thinking-wonder if you could put Keeper in a kennel long enough to spray the soap off of him. Poor guy.
I have used both a stainless steel mixing bowl and an 8 cup Tupperware measuring container with a lid for years. I have never seen a plastic bowl like yours. At first I thought it was glass as I’ve seen that pattern in glass but never in plastic.

  27. rose

I heard tomato juice bath would take care of skunk smell ??

some of my fav bowls are Corning Ware. My daughter
In law referred to them as “vintage” !
Got them as wedding gift in 1978. what did she mean by vintage?. I’m leaving them to her in my will!

    love your blog!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Rose – that’ll teach her! I think we’re all vintage by now.

  28. Jo in Wyoming

    Poor Keeper…yes how embarrassing.
I wish I could take and send pictures of the jail girls bulls eye quilts.
    No pictures from the inside.

    1. Betty Klosterman

Did they let you go back to work with the girls in jail? If so, how great. You all will be so happy.

Jo – I remember when you helped the girls make their bullseye quilts. I so wish they’d let you work with your girls again!!

Hi Mary, just had 2 hours with no power! Very windy wet day in wellington, no planes or ferries today, too rough! I was pleased when it came on., l needed a cup of coffee! I spent the time trimming a pile of H ST by the window. Poor keeper, l hope he is smelling nice now! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  30. Christine in AZ

Aww, Keeper. Don’t tangle with those fluffy-tailed critters!
    I’d love a pattern – thanks!
And I love seeing all the bullseye quilts. They’re all gorgeous 🙂

  31. Lynn in Scottsdale, AZ

I have a glass bowl that we received as a wedding present over 40 years ago. I use iIt for mixing, serving, and even for cutting my husband’s hair.

    Such beautiful bullseye quilts.

Hope Keeper starts smelling better soon.

  32. Deb in Idaho

I love the quilt show, if I get a minute I’ll take a picture of mine to send you. I use it all the time. I have stainless steel bowls that I use all the time. Yes post the pattern. Poor Keeper, hopefully the smell disappears soon.

  33. Sue McG

Poor Keeper! I hope he is soon scent free.
I have an old Tupperware mixing bowl that I use all the time. It has to be at least 40 years old. I have other bowls, but this one is my favorite.
