This was so fun once again – enjoy these great sewing rooms, tidy or not, in use or not – I love looking at your spaces?

I too am laughing about three wise men. Best I’ve heard in a bit. The fires are terrible. It just seems to be getting worse every year.
Good news, our son was married this past weekend, an outdoor wedding at a friends property and the weather cooperated. The wedding was beautiful. I am away for a few days for a well deserved rest and will send a picture of the wedding cake I made for them. My son and I also did all the flowers, 18 vases for the tables, 6 bouquets, 2 baskets for the flower girls, 2 boutonnières and 2 pocket squares. It was a labour of love and no neither him nor I are florists or have any previous experience in arranging flowers. We did a practice run a few months ago. Yes I believe we are crazy! But they turned out beautiful so we were quite proud of ourselves.

Love all the pictures of the sewing rooms.
Sad about the wildfires in Loveland, CO. Hope they can contain them sone. My prayers for CA, OR, WA and CO.
Loved the three wise men joke..
    Take care.

The fire near Loveland has now reached 1820 acres. I got up during the night and even with the windows and doors closed, the smoke smell was overwhelming. I think it was coming through the bathroom vent. Not a good day for those with allergies and asthma. Supposed to meet friends for lunch in about an hour, but I’m wondering if I shouldn’t stay home and start loading my favorite quilts and other valuables into my car in case we get a notice to evacuate. One good thing is that there is no wind yet today. Hopefully there will be progress made in containing a part of the fire area.

Thanks for posting all the pictures… I have definitely been showing my husband so he understands how “minimal” I am…lol…. the wise men comment…. too perfect…. made me laugh outloud

Jeanne, please keep us posted on the fire near Loveland, CO. We loved going to Estes Park when our sons were young. We were there for the big Scots/Irish fall festival one year. One time we splurged and stayed at the Stanley Hotel…did not see or hear ghosts! I remember Estes Park and Loveland both had a great public libraries. The boys always made kissing sounds and joked about the name of Loveland for a town!

    Love it! Three Wise Men!

Pics were great and enjoyed them this morning after calling off regular sew day here at my house on Tuesdays. It’s too hot to go out. I will be in the sewing room anyway if alone as it’s the coolest place in the house. I need to be there believe me. So much on my agenda. Another retreat August 4.

Mary, you made my mouth water when you said Angel Food cake! With fluffy white frosting! Yum! And fresh strawberries and real whipped cream! Anyone else love this!! It was always a birthday treat!
It is raining here as I write this morning! The thunderstorm woke me at 5 Am ish . Ugh. Couldn’t get back to sleep! We needed a little rain to water the lawn and garden and freshen things up. Winner, SD had a real bad storm I saw, so far, we have just had rain, thankfully,
it’s to Sioux Falls for the doctor today, and Costco etc. could be a hot sticky trip. 🥵
Thanks for all the pictures Mary and I sure do think your chickens are beautiful!

Joy – we are awaiting that rain and it’s too bad because Kate and her girls are coming at 10 and they love to drive the golf cart. They live in NJ so being in the country with so much space and freedom is fun for them. When my hens start laying I’ll be handing out eggs right and left.

I too love seeing all the sewing room pictures. I don’t feel as bad owning so much fabric. Some people have a lot more than me. Mary have you ever been to the Iowa State Fair? It is always in the top ten best state fairs and this year we are going. Dan has been twice with his grandparents. He said one year they saw Boxcar Willie. I am sure there’s no way to top that.☺️

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna Jo – yes, the Iowa State Fair is fabulous – I didn’t go last year so I thought surely we’d go this year but now I’m doubting I have the stamina to walk the many miles the fair covers. And oh, the food!!!! The excitement of walking from the parking lot to the ticket office is palpable!

      1. Donna Jo

I will have to eat something yummy in your honor. We are going to the tractor pull too. We have been married 36 years and this year is the first time I have ever heard Dan mention that he loves tractor pulls! He used to go with his grandpa. I have never been. We are really looking forward to the fair. I hope they have a Caitlin Clark butter sculpture like last year.

I read this as soon as it landed, when there were no comments yet. I’ve now returned and I’m SO part of the group that is glad to see sewing rooms with equal creative messes, and stashes, and all the personal touches. I have a tall skinny set of drawers that my grandfather , a carpenter and funeral director, made to store all the fittings and fixtures for caskets. The drawers hold two rows of fat quarters perfectly.

Mary, you do have pretty chickens! I liked the black and white ones the other day too.

  11. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

I love the sewing room photos. I am seriously considering saving some of them as evidence in my favour for the next time there is a conversation about the size of my stash of how full my sewing room is! And the three wise men sign is hilarious! Hope you are feeling a bit better Mary.

Fiona – I think you’re on to something – save the proof! Haha!!!

Wasn’t the men’s gymnastic team fun to watch? The joy they shared after winning the bronze medal was just contagious. No sadness that they hadn’t won the gold, but just plain happiness that the USA had finally gotten their first medal in men’s gymnastics since 2016. It was thrilling to watch.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanne – I, too, loved watching the men’s gymnastics team and I thought the same thing. I wished they’d gotten gold but they were so thankful for bronze.

i love all the pictures. was interesting to see what little quilts had for sale. unfortunately i can’t help them as i don’t need doubles. i made and gave away alot of that while in the beginning of my quilting life. daughter loved it all. made great gifts for teachers also. i loved that i could do a good job with it.
the sewing rooms are fascinating. i can finally prove to my husband that i do not have the most fabric of everyone. mine is just more spread out now because he built the shelves so it could be out so i could see it. i remember when it was crammed everywhere and some of it still is as i bring more down into my room downstairs. great ideas. one the other day reminded me that i need to pull out my ‘type’ drawer and sand down the rough spots and use it. also have an old old coca cola bottle box that carried 12 oz bottles. surely i can find somewhere to use it. especially since i broke the ‘no fabric downstairs’ rule once i couldn’t get up the stairs. ha!
is always interesting to see your plants and others gardens. tomorrow i get to go out to the eye doc. have an appointment with the spine doc early next monday morning. i lead such a fun life. NOT!
hugs to all, patti in florida

Patti – I feel bad that your life is so full of Dr. appts right now. Try to entertain yourself with small projects like the crib quilts you’ve been making. And all of us are here to listen, any time, day or night. I’m awake many times throughout the night and I reach for my IPad.

    2. Mary Ellen

Thanks for the kind words about my Little Quilt treasures. We have often heard that our Little Quilts were so doable! Was especially nice to hear over the years about how many folks started their quilting journey with Little Quilts!

It is fun to “visit” The sewing rooms. I love the sign in the first one: ” I’m not bossy…I just have better ideas.” I also like the amazing grace cross. Mary, what breed are the white chickens with the dark tipped feathers at the neck? They look so striking.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – I really should look this up but I think they’re Columbian Wyandottes – I think they’re gorgeous!!

Has news of the Co. fire near Loveland reached Iowa yet? It is near the Big Thompson Canyon that goes up to the town of Estes Park and Rocky Mtn. Park. The whole canyon is closed and evacuations have already begun. Please pray for those whose homes are in the fire area. It is close enough to us here in Loveland to be scary (about 10 miles away) from our house) even though no one in Loveland has been evacuated yet.
I’m loving the pictures of everyone’s sewing areas and the creative ways of using those spaces. My husband used to think I had more fabric than most quilters. Boy was he ever wrong. I wish he was still alive to see the pictures you all have posted on this blog. Many of you have as much fabric as some quilt shops I have visited. What a great hobby.
As I’m watching the Olympics in the evening, it has been fun to do some hand quilting after a hiatus of about 10 years. Lots of needle pricks since there are no calluses on my fingers under the quilt, but I’m making progress.
Stay cool everyone. Jeanne in Co.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanne – I personally do not know about this fire. Rick and I went to Estes Park on our honeymoon – such a pretty place. I, too, am watching the Olympics!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sandy – I don’t know how to show you here. The sign says:
      Three wise men….
      Seriously?

  16. JoAnn/MN

Thanks Mary for posting all these wonderful photos. So much fun to see other quilters world.

  17. Pateicia

Oh the places we can pack our stuff. We quilters certainly have a lot of it. The shelves, the cubbies, the lockers, the drawers ! There never seems to be enough space. Like everyone else I’ll never have time to make it all or use it up. There is so much pretty fabric out there and don’t you know those designers keep designing. So much to entice us!
Love Millie’s spot. And it does make me smile seeing everyone’s spaces as now I know I’ve got company.
So I’ve been watching more Olympics today. I was really struck by the camaraderie and support the men’s gymnastic team had for each other. . Performances were iffy for some members and they were working hard to perform well.. When it was clear they won the bronze in the team competition they couldn’t stop hugging each other and celebrating I enjoyed seeing that.
Thanks for the blog about everything.

I love Millie’s favorite spot; that adorable room with the arched door and braided rug would be my favorite, too.
The sewing rooms are great and inspiring. I have come up with several ideas from seeing other quilters’ sewing areas which may work for me. Thanks.
    Take Care, Mary 🥰

Three Wise Men…….too funny and will have me chuckling for a few days. I really appreciate all of the pictures of everyone sewing space. It shows the creative spirit of you all, The chickens look healthy and happy, do they lay happy eggs?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kim – the chickens have not started laying yet but it won’t be long – they need to be 6-9 months old. And then I’ll be making egg custard and Angel food cake again every week or so.
