Recipes From Joy, 9-18-24

Becky and I provided music for the Concord residents today – not the full house we had the last time for sure. One guy looked in the door and left – haha! We’re losing our touch for sure.

Choir practice tonight and that’s my day full of nothing. Becky did stop here at the farm after Concord to see the dogs and so I could give her this thrift store purchase I made for $2. She loves horses.

Joy sent the following recipes – looks like some good ones to save. Thanks, Joy!

I stopped to see Marline today – her knee is pretty swollen – I think she’s been on it too much. It’s hard to keep a good woman down! Haha!

    Thank for the recipes, Joy.
Now that fall is arriving, I am more interested in meal planning. I have been making applesauce for the freezer.
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

We love our house cleaner . She has become a good friend. She loves Squeak and Buddy and Squeak doesn’t like anyone else but us! Thanks for the recipes except the cranberry., not a fan of cranberries. When I have a mo Ute, I will send my Aunt Betty’s salad recipe. Yum. I keep running into Giant Gazette recipes—love them😋. Those horses for Becky are neat. I have been tooo busy. I hope Oct is more calm. It is so Hot here and dry—no rain in our city for at least 6 weeks. Stay cool, Mary. I love the blog about nothing😍😍

When I was working full time I had a gal come for two hours every other week. My house had never been cleaner – even though I used to clean every weekend I didn’t always wash floors each week. I only have carpet in one downstairs bedroom. My house used to sparkle when I came home and she came on a Friday so I could enjoy the clean house during the weekend. She was such a sweetie. She even talked to all our animals while she was here and dusted all my baseboards. I really miss her. She retired from house cleaning when she was 6 months pregnant and got herself an office job. She was the best. Once I retired I took over again and can say I don’t clean nearly as much as I did when I was working. Not sure why. I think I just don’t like doing it. lol.

Thanks for sharing recipes Joy. I have not seen that variation on cranberry salad yet and now fresh cranberries will be showing up in the stores for .99 a bag with holidays coming. I bought fresh eggs near our camp and they were same price as home -$3 a dozen. I haven’t bought any in stores in awhile.
You found a nice horse statue for Becky. Good price too. We found a nice church thrift store near our camp open one afternoon a week when they have a farmers market in their parking lot so lots of good food offered as well. We bought a cute lighted snowman for outside decoration for $5. They had lots of dishes but I didn’t find anything I had to have.

I buy fresh cranberries when they are in season and then freeze them. They do very well and I can make “fresh” cranberry sauce year round. One can’t beat the .99 price, so I buy a bunch – maybe 25 bags each fall. I still have 10 bags in the freezer from last year. So, I guess I won’t buy so many this year, or I really need to start making the sauce more frequently. Laugh.

Vicki, I do the same. Stack the bags in the freezer. My husband loves to grind frozen ones with a large naval orange and uses it in place of mayo for his sandwiches or his yogurt. It’s our year to buy more as we used ours up already.

I just made a small batch of apple butter this morning from some apples someone brought to church. It is in the crock pot now, and will cook down until the right consistency. It’s hard to find apple butter in the stores anymore, and we really like it on toast. It’s going to be in the 80’s here in SE Iowa today. I need to go pick my cucumbers……they are still producing. We could really use rain here as well.
Just remember that the Fever play tonight, their last game before playoffs. In central Iowa we have been getting them on either channel 5 or 23. The game starts at 7:00 tonight in Iowa. Not sure if that is the case today or not.
    Have a wonderful day.

        Mary,
You are right, and I did see that but still put the wrong time down…..I hope we can see it tonight. It shouldn’t be as difficult game as some they have had recently, but you never know.

Kalona Fall Fest has the best homemade apple butter, made during festival. They sell it in jars. You can also get slice of fresh homemade bread with warm applebutter spread on it. Sept 27 & 28 this year.

Thank you for the recipes, I will be making the John Deer & the cranberry salad for a family gathering. Both of them are new to me and sound good. I have made the Amish salad and its always popular with family. The horse statue is a keeper so glad you found a home for it. We are looking forward to the rain this week since our yard is finally in and the seed is down. Now we can focus on some closet remodels that I need done before winter hits us. Off to quilting guild this morning, its a sit n sews, bring whatever you want to work on. I prepped a Cake Recipes with 2 layer cakes, easy project

Mary I have been helping a friend for several years and just got her into assisted living a few months ago, sometimes when they have entertainment they forget to go not that they don’t like who is playing. When I visit I check to see what is going on that day and escort her to it! The same for NFL games if I see they are playing I call her to remind her!
Thank You Joy for the recipes, especially can’t wait to try the cranberry salad, love anything cranberry! Becky is sure to love the horse statue!

Thanks for the recipes. I make the spaghetti salad one, but with zesty Italian dressing rather than creamy Italian dressing. It has been a favorite at potlucks and people often ask me for the recipe. I also make the broccoli cauliflower salad, but with dried cranberries in place of the red pepper and onion. It is interesting how one can make just a few twists/changes and it becomes a “new” recipe.
To be lovely weather today, with a chance of rain tonight. I hope we get the rain, as we are really dry.

thanks for the recipes. i saw a couple i know i have to try.
very tired today. walked in the house monday from the hospital and had trouble breathing. took me being away from the house for a while to realize how very dusty my house is. dh is the defacto housekeeper but he is still working full time and i know he’s tired. he’s also a man and has always expected me to take care of it. a friend did a bunch of research for me and like mary, i am going to have a housekeeper. they are coming friday afternoon to get all this dust out of my house. (only the downstairs). and i am doing to have them keep coming. my breathing is more important than mr. ed being paranoid about a housekeeper. plus i have no choice but to be here while they are cleaning.
tomorrow morning i am being evaluated for home health care. no it doesn’t mean they will clean my house. the last time i had home health care, a lady came, took my blood pressure and my temp and spend 15 minutes bitching about her life circumstances. if that is what they are planning they can forget it. i already do that by myself daily. should be an interesting eval. maybe some p.t. involved as long as they realize my lungs are totally shot. but i need the help with the stamina.
am truly hoping that the deep cleaning will help with the breathing.
now i’m going to bed, earlier than normal for me. patti in florida

Patti – my gal who comes for 3 hours every other week has made a difference in my attitude and my life! She’s a good and fast worker so gets lots done in 3 hours. Even I am
willing to touch up here and there and even decorate more. I put the fall quilts up yesterday.
