Greetings from NorthEast Texas. I live in Naples and we have enjoyed temps in the high 80s and low 90s. Friday night at the football game in Hughes Springs, it was so humid that I felt bad for the boys. Our 2A school played a 3A school but lost by one point. A really good game. My grandson is our quarterback! Saturday, my little sewing group, went to Sulphur Springs for a quilt show. It was put on so well, since it was the last day, you could fill a plastic shopping bag for $5.00 with fabric remnants. So fun! Have a good week every one!

I’m in Pennsylvania for a quilt retreat this weekend and it’s 79°. I’m working on a churn dash quilt. Also a snowball quilt following your directions from a few years ago. The trees are just starting to turn. It’ll be a couple of weeks before we get all the beautiful fall colors. Enjoy the weekend everyone.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynne – I love that simple snowball quilt – I should make that again. 91 degrees here this afternoon and the bugs have arrived!

  3. Carol Reents

I am north of Indianapolis IN. It is hot, hot here. Add that to dry soils and no rain and we are in a not burn ban. Ninety two was a bit much yesterday. Harvest is full tilt with soy beans being combined and some corn being picked.

  4. Danette

I’m from Lubbock, Texas. Still in the 100’s but it’s dry heat here. Visited Springfield, Missouri area last week. 80’s and 90’s but more humid. It was a really nice change of climate.

  5. Jan in AZ

When I left for a trip it was too hot for me to walk in the mornings at sunrise – 90’s. But, on my return to the Valley of the Sun (Phoenix metro area), these last two mornings have been lovely in the 70’s for the morning walk. Even the windows could be opened for a short bit. When the AC comes on, the windows close. Alas, 100+ temperatures are ahead for next week. Saturday is a “baby sprinkle” gathering (2nd child) for a family member. Church, sewing, reading and watching some games on TV – Diamondbacks mainly – are on the docket for the weekend. I, too, like the cheerful cancer quilts – simple pattern, letting the material colors and design warm the soul.
    Enjoy the weekend all!

Love all the pics today. Especially the maze sign. It made me chuckle! Like so many, it’s unseasonably hot and dry here in Indiana. We’ve only had 5/10th of an inch of rain all month. I went to my nephew’s high school football game last night it was a horrible loss of 57 – 0! The boys expected a beat down but I was hoping for anything other than a shut out. On to next week. There is a fall festival today in the next town over. It should be fun. Have a good weekend everyone. Stay cool!

Hello from Waukesha, Wisconsin, about 30 miles West of Milwaukee.
I’m still enjoying the warm weather while hand stitching outside.

  8. MaureenHP

    Hi Mary,
I live about 40 miles west of Chicago. It’s a beautiful sunny day. Not much color but lots of green leaves are drying up and falling off. Hoping for rain tomorrow.
The corn maze sign is histerical!
Enjoy these last days of summer.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Maureen – I just thought the same thing – I’m sitting in the porch with my coffee yet the dry leaves are falling in the wind. It’s so warm my robe is just around my shoulders – on September 21!

  9. Fran Dixon

You say warm? I say hot! 93 my car said yesterday! SW Iowa is expecting rain today and a cool down. I am ready! Fall is my favorite time of the year. So bring on the photos from across the country!

I am home from retreat. However, Monday thru. Friday next week we are having day time retreat nearby. We rent a community building and split the cost between us daily as quilters come and go. I have a little cooking to do for it today and tomorrow. No prep work in the sewing dept. I finished the baby quilt I was working on and it needs to now be quilted so that means resume other projects! I can’t take my long arm to day retreats!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Fran – I think it’s wonderful you enjoy these retreats so much! And you must get so much accomplished! I talk too much at retreats – haha!

  10. Pat in AZ

I am so impressed with the cancer center quilts. They are simple but because of the colors, so very eye catching. They are sure to bring a little comfort and a smile to someone.
The corn maze sign cracked me up. That sounds like something my husband would tell the grandkids when they were little.
Mary, your barn impresses me every time you show it.
I live halfway between Phoenix and Tucson smack dab in the middle of the desert. I am so happy to say we FINALLY had temperatures under 100 this week! Yay And it’s been cool enough overnight to open doors and windows for a couple of hours in the morning. The house sure needed an airing out.
    Pat in AZ

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat – it sounds impossible to live in that heat. Under 100 is cool enough to open the windows???? Isn’t it amazing how we all learn to live in our own climate conditions and think nothing of it?

  11. Joy in NW Iowa

Up here in NW Iowa (very corner of Iowa) it is dry and hasn’t rained more than a dust settler for ages! It is warm and breezy most days but today the high is 78! Soybean harvest is happening all around us with the guys thinking they will start today.
Plans for the weekend? Pretty low key for me. Fix some food for the bean harvesters. Do a little sewing. Go to church tomorrow and take a nap and read.
The weather is suppose to be cooler next week, but no chance of rain. Dry harvest is very tense with the fie danger.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – I agree about dry harvest! Combine fires are common and dangerous! And the wind can spread that fire quickly.

  12. Jeanine

In Oskaloosa, Iowa, it has been in the upper 80’s all week, but I enjoy that kind of weather. We will soon have a change, so I am thankful for every warm day we have in the fall. Next week will be more fall like weather. We were fortunate to get over an inch of rain a couple days ago at our farm, but none in Oskaloosa. That was rare because it was usually the other way around this summer. The garden is still producing cucumbers (I’ve picked buckets full this summer, and have given most of them away), tomatoes and okra. I am ready to be done with gardening for this year!

Today we have a reunion at our church with some adults that were teens when we were first married, and they (the teens) had a choir that went to other churches and ministered. Their director will be here, and also the man who pastored our church at that time. I was the secretary for these two men as well. It will be a fun reunion. These “kids” are mostly retired now. Where did that time go?

Love all the pictures again today.

  13. Susan in AL

We’re out in Colorado for a bit for dh’s work assignment, and right now it’s Such a Huge Change from Alabama! It’s about a 30-degree difference from mid-afternoon to overnight temperatures, with warm days and cool overnights. As usual, it’s very dry, with mule deer walking about as if they owned the streets. There was a bobcat strolling along the sidewalk the other morning — quite a startling surprise! Even if I had had my phone, I’m not sure that I would have thought to take a picture! The weather people are predicting an abrupt change this weekend, with rain and much cooler temperatures and snow in the higher elevations. We are at about 7000 feet here, and snow is expected above 9000 feet — maybe snow on Pike’s Peak by Monday. That is something that I would remember to take a picture of!

We went to an estate sale yesterday, and the woman had been a crafter and a quilter who must have loved primitive and country style like so many of us. There was an entire closet/room packed with Debbie Mumm fabrics and dozens and dozens of crafting books! There was so much fabric (much of it cut for projects and other smaller pieces) that they were selling it for $3 a pound. I’m not telling how much of it came home with me 🙂

    1. Joy in NW Iowa

My son (45 year old) was making gumbo and wanted to know what okra was. If you have a picture of the plant and the okra will you post it so I can show him? Not sure I have ever seen it in the stores up here but then it isn’t something i use. I have had it in a restaurant tho.
What does it taste like? Thanks

      1. Jeanine from SE Iowa

        Joy,
The okra plants are losing their leaves and don’t look the best right now, but I can send a picture to Mary to put on the blog if she wants to. I am surprised we are still getting so much okra. I have been sharing it with a friend who is from the south and so happy to get it. I don’t know how to tell you what it tastes like. I fry it in bacon grease with onions, summer squash and zucchini if I have some. Zucchini did not do well this summer here.

      2. Susan in AL

        Jeanine is On It!

As a born-and-raised Southerner, I risk excommunication by saying that my gumbo Never includes okra. Maybe if it is covered in enough grease and onion and bacon, it might be OK, but I can’t stand the stuff and Never prepare it. To me, it is a little like overgrown rhubarb in that it has too many strings and too much ~ slime ~ Tell your baby that he can substitute any vegetable that makes him happy. It’s the spice that matters!

        1. Joy in NW Iowa

Your reply just hits my funny bone! He called and asked what it was and what would happen if he didn’t put it in! I explained what I remember it looked like in pictures etc. I told him exactly what you said. His family has never had gumbo so why would they look for the okra? Haha.
I love rhubarb any don’t find it stringy if it is picked young and chopped fine and put in a dessert with flour, eggs and sugar for thickening then top it with brown sugar, oatmeal flour and butter and baked! Top with ice cream ! Yum! I’ll post my recipe if you want!
I have never been to Alabama! You must be a little warm 😉. Thanks so much for responding! Have a good Sunday!

          1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – I made your spaghetti salad tonight and we loved it! I halved the recipe and still it was more than we could eat. I didn’t know what salad supreme seasoning was – but it was good even without it.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – oooh, think of the fun you’ll have sorting all that fabric when you get home! And a bobcat strolling along the sidewalk? – yikes!!

  14. Nancy Foland , Shelbyville Kentucky

We are in a drought. Only 6 tenths of an inch in over two months. Hot weather 90’s plus’s temperatures. We have tried our best to water , but I think we are fighting a losing battle here. Most of the oaks, five to ten years old , have already dropped their leaves. The lilacs, burning bushes, amongst most everything is stressed. Pretty bad when there’s crack around the trees that I are so big that I can strick my hand in them. There’s been rain all around us , but no luck here. We won’t have a fall here on the farm this year. Possibly no leave on the trees to get a color change.

    1. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

Nancy, we are in the same drought in Central Ohio. Some areas are a little green, but we are brown—grass, trees, everything. It will be 91* today. I feel sorry for the football teams playing in this heat. Go Buckeyes! It might rain next Tuesday and cool off, but for now, it is HOT. Take care everyone. Stay cool.

  15. Alice in SW OH

Still very hot in Maineville, Ohio. Has been in the 90’s, but it’s supposed to cool down to the mid 70’s next week & hopefully a bit of rain. We also have a burn ban in effect & our yards are crispy! I do water my plants, but sparingly. We have construction going on across from us, 130+ new homes. So much for our country setting. It’s very upsetting to see all those big beautiful trees taken out! And there’s a cloud of dust everywhere! And sadly with the dryness & construction it’s forcing the deer to seek food in our yards. First time I’ve ever had them come up on my porch to eat my flowers! Right now I’m covering my baskets of Impatients & mums with sheets & it’s working. So far they’ve left my geraniums alone. The quilts for the cancer center are lovely & how nice to brighten someone’s day with a quilt! Very thoughtful! Next week I’m taking my dear friend to Holmes Co, Oh for a tour of the Amish country side. Last year I took him there for his 90th birthday & he had such a good time we’re going back! I know the area & quilt shops pretty well as I go every Oct for a quilting retreat. I’ll send pictures of our adventure next week. Again, thank you Mary for the blog so that we can share a little bit of our lives with each other!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – you and Ron will have a great little getaway! Yes, , show us the countryside and/or the quilt shops in that area. And what you buy!

      1. Alice in SW Ohio

Mary, I certainly will share pictures! I’ve picked a few new places to take him this year! It’s supposed to be a bit cooler next week which will make it more pleasant?

  16. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

It’s warm, muggy and very foggy this morning in Saginaw. Should be low 80’s today, low 70s tomorrow. I was able to see the last year’s triplets (deer) grazing in the backyard. The little boy has single tall spikes and it seems as if all the deer have turned dark overnight. Mother nature knows when to camouflage those guys. Hopefully we get the rain they are predicting tomorrow, we sure do need it.

  17. Meredith in Cincinnati

It’s warm here in Cincinnati. 93 degrees yesterday, and NO rain for weeks. It’s very crunchy underfoot. I am SO ready for cooler weather! Great news about the Fever game; it’s on ABC. Since the Bengals play on Monday night, I can watch the whole game!

  18. Kathy in western NY

Very nice quilts made for cancer patients. I am always thankful you have good people here on your blog who provide for those less fortunate with a colorful quilt to brighten them up for a bit.
Sun is shining again this morning and it’s been such a warm fall week here. 12 days with no rain. I have a memorial service today I was asked to help plan for a good friend who loved country music and became a widower in her 50’s. She didn’t have any hobbies but loved going to the older country singer concerts like Statler Brothers, whenever she could. Our organist is excited to play John Denver’s “ Country Road” as we exit the church to attend a reception in the fellowship hall. I’ll be singing those words the rest of the day…country road, take me home, to the place I belong.

  19. Susan in VA

I’m in Northern Virginia, about 40 miles from Washington, DC. We’re having cool mornings (in the mid-60s) and days in the upper 70s/low 80s. It’s raining here and there. It’s nice, but still a little too warm. We are in the process of moving from a large house to our much smaller lake house about 3 1/2 hours away. Our son and his wife are buying the house here. I’ll be so happy when this is over. We’ve already moved the big furniture we’re taking. Now, we’re just packing up the rest. That’s what this weekend and the next few weeks and weekends look like — deciding what to take and what to leave for an estate sale.

  20. Laura

It’s hot here! When I got into my car, yesterday afternoon, the thermometer read 102, sitting in the parking lot. By the time I got home it was 87.
We had a little taste of fall, last week. I want it back!

  21. Susan Sundermeyer

It’s been very hot here in Dayton, Ohio. Terrible drought going on. Going to the Wool Gathering Festival in Yellow Springs on Saturday. Absolutely gorgeous yarns for sale plus displays of people spinning and carding.

  22. Sandy

Hi Mary, starting to get warmer days in New Zealand, longer too, summer daylight saving starts next week end.My lavender bush is looking good, we are going to the garden center tomorrow, l want to get a couple more lavender, and a lemon tree.l am working on a churn dash quilt at present, 55 blocks made,45 to go! My son Andrew had gastric sleeve surgery on Thursday, very uncomfortable day one, but feeling better each day. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sandy – give Andrew our greetings and get well wishes for a speedy recovery! I love hearing about your opposite seasons

  23. Jeanie S, Central IL

The ‘pink sky’ photo is beautiful. Buddy is so cute watching his tv show. The Cancer Quilts are lovely.
A half hour west of Peoria IL, it was 90 today. However, at 4P, the humidity was only 36; that was a big plus.
As for this weekend, we had two couples over for dinner tonight—laughs and good conversation. The rest of our weekend will be very low key.
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

  24. Paula Nordt

I’m twenty minutes southwest of Houston, Texas. It’s still in the high 90’s here with heat indexes around 105. It has been foggy the last two mornings, but no rain in sight. I need to water my zinnia seedlings in the morning. We have tons of little green grasshoppers this year, and some huge yellowish brown ones I’ve not seen before. I’m always startled when they take off and fly.

  25. Kathy B

9 miles from Fredericktown Missouri, 9 miles from Farmington Missouri. The weather has been in the lower 90’s and needing rain.

  26. Christine in AZ

I’m in Flagstaff AZ and the weather is perfect. 70-75-ish (finally!) during the day. (We’re at 7000 feet.) The trees are just beginning to turn color. We had a very warm summer.

  27. Pat Smith

I’m in Stowe, Vermont where we’ve just had the most wonderful week of great sunny weather, 78-80 during the day and in the 50’s at night. But, all that is about to change next week when we go back to our more typical rain every few days. The fall leaf peepers have arrived and there are a lot of huge buses parked downtown. I feel somewhat sad for the peepers because we are nowhere near peak foliage for about 2 more weeks. Still, they’ve had beautiful weather and the mountains are beautiful, peak leaves or not.

    1. Paula Nordt

Pat Smith, when I first read “leaf peepers”, I immediately thought of our little green tree frogs! Then I realized you meant tourists! 😹😹😹

  28. Linda W

Summer has just flown by this year. Here in Columbus, Ohio we are experiencing very dry and warm conditions. Our lawn is completely brown and crunchy. The temps have been in the 90s and will continue until the end of next week. I’m enjoying this last bit of summer weather.
