When I opened my IPad to write a post last night a huge update was loading. Ugh. Hank went home so we’re back to normal this morning – more laid back than when the wind-up toy is here. Ha! Here a a few photos from yesterday.

Then I started cleaning up the yard before I mowed the weeds – no grass, just weeds.

Last week when we had such high winds we lost this tree which caught in a tree nearby rather than on the fence! I’m thankful.

Only in the 50s here this morning. It won’t be a struggle to stay inside this afternoon when the ballgames are on.

Beautiful blue quilt! Love the picture of Keeper and the one of Hank’s curiosity with Hazel’s digging. You are so good at capturing those moments, Mary.
Remembering our fallen service members often, but especially Monday. I enjoyed the Memorial Day Concert from DC on PBS last night.
Jan
Mary, you were so lucky the tree left your fence alone. I sure like the pattern for the 40 yr old quilt. Does anyone know the name of it. We are having typical spring weather. Days of rain then days of beautiful sunshine. Bought tomato and green peppers plants at Costco yesterday and got them planted. The garden is looking so healthy as it does in the spring. Have a wonderful week everyone.
I forgot to say how cute the dogs were sitting in water. Our dog loves water but won’t go in a pool we’ve set up for him. Our previous dog was the same. Not sure why. But give them a lake or river and they won’t come out.
Teresa – I feel the same about gardens in the spring but by the time it gets hot I don’t think they’re fun anymore. Ha! I’m a fair weather gardener for sure. The tree company came out and looked at the tree – they’ll get it down in the next week. Keeper won’t go in the water unless its the pond but by now the pond is dirty.
When you wrote it was 2 hours in any direction to find a store that sells clothing, etc………. That is the way it used to be. We’d be so excited when the new Sears Roebuck catalogue came in the mail. Probably for school clothes which were either homemade, hand-me-downs or ordered from the catalogue. And they sold yard goods, too, but it was only 36″ wide in those days. Guess they were the good old days?
My Sister-in-law asked if I’d make her a twin size quilt for her bed. The quilt shop near me is closing so I took advantage to get some fabric. I just don’t have many big pieces of fabric to make big quilts. Since she is 91, I decided I’d better get right on it. I am putting the last 2 pieces of the last border on today, so the top will be ready for the quilter. Now to find the quilter….. I love making the blocks, but sure dread the long borders. My favorite is scrappy quilts. You know we can’t waste it and I’ve got a lot of stuff I’m not wasting…….
We were supposed to have rain all weekend, but so far it has missed us with just drizzle, a bit of fog and sprinkles. Maybe tomorrow will bring more rain? We can only hope.
Hope everybody is enjoying the holiday. We remember the veterans and all the others that have died. There are a whole lot of very nice people we remember.
Take care everybody. Betty in Rapid City
I always love to see Hank in your yard! The pictures of the dogs in the baby pools are so funny! You sure got lucky that tree didn’t hit the fence. Hope they are able to cut it up without falling on your fence.
We’re having a graduation party for my youngest granddaughter. Looking forward to seeing everybody.
My daughter(47 this weekend) got engaged for the first time yesterday. I’m so excited for them!
Have a good weekend everybody. I can just image all the foods you’ll be making!
Every picture I see of Hazel has her head in a hole digging and her tail in the air. I loved the picture of Hank in the pool with the filthy water and Hazel in her bucket with equally dirty water. What a fun time they had! I’m glad t he tree just missed your fence.
Pat – JRTs were bred to go down holes to get varmints out and that stubby tail was used to pull them out. Until I started letting them out in the hay field she had never really dug much – now she’s possessed and begs to go out there every day. It’s not fenced in so she can’t go out there without me.
Happy Memorial Day (is that something you say). Tv in Australia showed people at an airport waiting to fly elsewhere., chaos. Those winds you have must be something, how many acres do you have? A household block is enough for me. Don’t forget to rest up, considering your last year, cheers
Denise – yes, Memorial Day is like your Anzac(?) Day – a day to remember. I have about 9 acres, 2 are alfalfa and the rest is the building site and thick grove that’s getting very old. I’m sure some of my trees are 100-150 years old. And they’re falling in our terrible winds
There is always work to do when owning a house isn’t there? But, we love it. I love seeing those cute faces of all of the pets in this group. Memorial Day is always a nice day to remember our Veterans and those who lost their lives. We have a woman in our Guild who is going on an Honor Flight next week.:) She already has her HF quilt.
For those of you who shop at JC Penney’s. I am worried our store will close so I went out there today. I found a bathing suit that FIT and two pairs of basic capris–one black; one blue. They were $34.99 marked down to $12.95. I could have had three for almost the price of one:) They are well made and also fit. Don’t you get tired of trying on three sizes to fine the one that will fit?
Happy Memorial Day everyone.
Diane – we have no stores within 100 miles to buy clothes – DesMoines, Mpls or Rochester – all two hours+ away. I hate having to order everything
That really makes shopping hard. I hate to
Order online. I live close to a mall and Columbus so I am lucky. Tonight we have no power—generator is running. Blue skies, no wind or rain. Not sure what happened, but 120 homes in our area are without power and no TV.
Diane – no power but no storm either? No tv – yikes!
I know. It is weird because we have had big winds and rains and no problems. Maybe a car wreck or a squirrel in the transformer. Our neighbor will know tomorrow😀.
Buddy is on my lap so no storms yet.
Love that 40 yr old blue quilt. r/eal quality to be so beautiful for so long. It’s lovely. Those fur babies are too sweet looking. Yours are always a hoot! Sorry about the tree but you were lucky. We cut down all near our house after hurricane Michael and it has really made our house hotter in the summer time. I miss them. Love trees even though they are work. Have a good weekend everyone and send some rain our way! Helen in south Georgia
Helen: Where in south Georgia are you? My mother was from Bainbridge and I have relatives there still. Haven’t been there in many years.
That quilt was all made by hand for my sister’s baby.
Carolyn, that quilt is just beautiful and more so because it’s done by hand. What a treasure!
The Wind Up Toy that Mary mentions CRASHES HARD once he gets back home. He slept in my chair with me for over an hour last night. He was so tired. Going to Mary’s is like going to Grandma’s house. What kid doesn’t like to do that?
I love all of your pictures today! The one with Hank barely fitting in the pool is so cute as well as Hazel, she needed that after digging.
I love that blue pinwheel and 4 patch quilt. I wonder what it would look like scrappy. I am recovering from knee replacement and haven’t been in my sewing studio in 4 weeks. Thank goodness I can look at quilt and doggy photos. Love your blog Mary.
Suzanne I hope you’re doing well. I had my second knee replacement last September. The doc said the first 6 months are critical to move so the cartilage doesn’t restrict movements. So keep moving and heal well.
Thank you. I have a wonderful physical therapist.
We have been busy in our yard, Larry mowed and I got the flowerpots ready for the cemeteries for our families. Many perennials did not survive the winter so I planted a few replacements. We took the grass clippings to the compost site then drove to Tracy to put our flowers at our parents’ graves. Stopped at Kwik Trip and got a couple of pizzas for supper. I was lucky enough yesterday to go to the chiropractor and felt so much better I could get back to work outdoors. We have a graduation this afternoon, and so not much will be on my schedule today. Have a quiet Memorial Day weekend.
Thanks for writing!! The only bright spot of the day as it Looks like another gray day as the weather is pretty Gray! We did have a little rain yesterday. Enough to measure, so that is good.
I’ve been working on greeting cards to get my stash built up. It is relaxing for me.
Crazy Hank! Your dogs are probably tired too! Kind of like us after the grandkids have been here for 4 to 5 days! All wore out! 😉
Have a nice Sunday.
Joy – that includes me, too! Exhausted because everybody is scared of Hank because he moves too fast and too sudden. We all rest up when Hank goes home – ha!!
Those pesky updates seem to occur at the most inopportune times, don’t they?
Sunny here today and it’s supposed to get to the mid-60’s – I hope so, because it’s been raining and the grass has been growing, so I need to mow!
The dogs look as though they had a ball yesterday! Too bad about your tree, but glad it didn’t take out your fence. We had 2 trees come down last year; one is all cleaned up now and the other (wild cherry) is cleared away except for a few logs. I am leaving the cherry snag for the woodpeckers at this point… but it may need to come down eventually. (The joys of country life – but I’ll take it!)
I’m baking cookies this morning for some friends who are going through a rough time… I hope to bring them some comfort.
Hope you have a nice day inside – stay warm!
I so love your animal pictures. Wouldn’t you love to know what their little minds are thinking?
Terri – yes, I’d love to know what they’re thinking!!!!
So sorry you lost a tree. They are always so hard to clean up when they fall that way. Glad your fence was safe. I’ve been working on my flower beds. They are all cleaned up and some plants moved. Now to mulch everything. Hope all have a nice Memorial Day weekend.
