Today was Bruce’s funeral and his little church was packed. I’ve never seen as many plants and flowers at any funeral – he was a well liked farmer and trucker and it showed. He vowed never to have a ham sandwich served at his funeral – it would be ribeyes and it was!

Tried to watch some college football this afternoon and found it to be slooooowww and boring compared to the WNBA! Haha! I decided to mow lawn instead. There’s been lots of discussion online about the Fever vs Sky game last night – Caitlin had a great game and it was very satisfying to beat Chicago so soundly. The announcers who hate Caitlin and never even mention her in the play by play should be replaced – in my opinion. But what do I know?

The Fever plays again tomorrow at 3 on NBA TV, whatever that is for you. Sometimes I think we find it on ESPN. Can’t say for sure.

And here’s the most heartwarming story you’ll hear all day – the story of Sally, a little dog from the shelter who went home with a new foster family. I’ve been keeping up with this story through my cousin Laura in East Peoria, IL. Every day for 6 days we exchanged texts.

Sally went home with her foster family and while outside on her pink leash she got startled, possibly by an engine backfire nearby. She took off running with the leash still attached to her collar. Everyone searched the thick woods around the river expecting to find her leash caught in underbrush or simply gone, eaten by coyotes. Hundreds of man hours were spent looking for her, drones were used and neighbors joined together in the search. Laura said she’d wake up in the night and wonder where Sally was. It was 98 degrees – could she find water? Food?

This afternoon Sally found her way back to her foster home by herself – a home she hadn’t even lived in but where she last had human contact. Here’s Sally and her happy mom!

Does anyone write children’s books? What a great story book this would be! I’m sure Sally has a permanent home with her foster family, don’t you think?

Many years ago this Saturday night would be the epitome of exhaustion for me – we would have just held our annual Open House Thursday night, Friday all day and evening and all day Saturday. People would be parked all the way to the highway until we added parking in our field south of the barn. We had vendors in the haymow sometimes, or in the yard, we had live music, food sometimes until that got reduced to just popcorn served by Hazel, my mom. If I recall everything was 20% off – everything! Oh, the work involved for all of us. We usually had checkout in the garage and one year I had a young goat named Jordan who jumped up on the check out table! Haha!!! Oh, the stories I could tell.

We’ve met Kaelynn before – the young quilter who loves animals

Seen online and I love it!!!

I’ll get up early so I can read your comments while I drink coffee in the porch. Tell me your plans for Labor Day if you have any.

The photo of Sally and her foster mom is so heartwarming; I hope Sally is permanently home. I also loved the photo of Kaelynn and her chicken-so cute. Speaking of cute, your guys in the golf cart are adorable!
As for Labor Day plans, we had a lazy, delightfully relaxing day. We started our day at our local orchard for applesauce apples, cider, and variegated corn for fall decorating. We ran into Peoria for a couple things at Office Depot and finished by ordering pizza—yay,
    no cooking!
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

Jeanie – guess I won’t be doing much fall decorating – I didn’t grow anything this year. I have a volunteer pumpkin vine in the back yard however that is going to produce a couple.

    Dear Mary,
Thinking about the fact that you have healed so well after the hemorrhage and the fact you have no pain. God’s healing is a miracle, as our bodies heal everyday whether it is a cut finger, or cancer cells forming in our bodies daily and are being attacked, or a hemmorage. Thank God for these daily miracles and the amazing human body.

Carolyn – I’m probably delusional, but I think it’s gone! Is that possible? Well, anything’s possible , I guess. Can’t wait to hear what they say

My dog Buster was gone for 2 weeks in the woods by my son-in-laws house. He had been kept in a kennel til Eric rescued him. My granddaughter said he ran to her at the open door and was so grateful to be home. Now he lives with me, and never ventures far from the porch. When I get up out of my chair he jumps up ready to go back in the house. He’s like a Velcro dog, right by my side. I’m grateful he doesn’t try to escape, or even run after squirrels!
I am amazed at Sally. Lucky that she found her way home. Not even being in the house. What a story. I hope the foster home will be her forever home.
I am glad it’s college football season. I love to watch Ohio State football and all the new players! I get anxious during the game and I have taken to knit dishcloths. I did that on the plane from Colorado and it sure helped. Funny the things we do.
Nothing this Labor Day. I don’t even have any cooking planned. May go out to dinner with my brother. He keeps me up to date on the news. Ha. I usually avoid the news.
Always glad to read the blog. Thinking about your trip to the Mayo Clinic coming up. Prayers for you.

I’m home now after spending almost a month in the Pacific NW visiting family and attending the wedding of one of our granddaughters. We had so much fun catching up with everyone, eating too much and not getting enough sleep. I have everything unpacked, washed and put away and am looking forward to being in my quilt shop. I love visiting with everyone but it sure is good to be home!
What a great story about Sally and her journey home. It must have been a huge relief for her foster/new mom. One of our dogs was a street stray and it took us almost a month to convince him this was a pretty cool place to hang out. I don’t think he would have been smart enough to find his way back if he had ever gotten out of the yard. The boy is kinda slow! Haha
Condolences to all who have lost a family member, friend or pet recently. I’m hoping that you can find peace in your hearts.
    Still reading posts I’ve missed.
    Take care everyone

Pat – well, welcome home! Bet the temps were more comfortable than AZ – so glad you had a wonderful time with family – and a wedding!! It’s so great to come home again tho – let us know what’s happening in your quilt shop!

I am behind, too. I replied yesterday, but kept getting interrupted and lost it twice🙀. It was nice of Mary Ellen to send the bookmarks. I put them in my Little Free Library to encourage readers not to turn the pages down. My dad always said Guernsey cows were the best for milk, ice cream, and cheese. My hometown in NY was known for cheese. We just came back from way upstate NY and stopped to buy cheese. Sally—whew. I am so happy she made it home. I read a book called A Long Way Home about a dog who travelled miles and miles. The book said dogs sense of smell is 400 times ours! Tomorrow we are going to Athens, Ohio to take our granddaughter to lunch for her birthday 9/3. Mine is coming up so everyone will come here next weekend and we’ll celebrate both. Fun😀. We are thankful to all workers which is most of us! Hope everyone is doing well. Mary , you sound like you are feeling well. I hope so.

Great story about Sally the dog finding her way home! It would make a good story or movie.
I hope Bruce’s family is comforted by knowing so many cared for him and wanted to honor his memory.
I’m actually enjoying seeing the deer that is dining in our garden. It is so dry in SW Ohio. We had a 70% chance of rain yesterday and got .03 inches. So, we watered the garden last night. The deer came to eat this afternoon. The sunflower plants had some new growth she enjoyed. She also had bits of tomato plants, squash and others. I believe we will harvest 2 tomatoes from the 10 plants; they do have the Irish Spring soap hanging above them.
We have no special plans for Labor Day. The day after, we are heading to Madison, WI, for the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show. I meet a group of cousins there. This year we have a group quilt that will be in the show. That is exciting for us.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Beryl – oh, that show sounds like fun! I haven’t been to a quilt show in years! Enjoy!

Love the story about Sally finding her way back to her foster home! Her new foster mom must have really made a great impression on her! So far I’ve not had that experience with any of my rescues getting away. But I did keep a friend’s dog that she had just adopted & he would have ran out the door to try to find his former owner if he’d gotten the chance! His former owner had just passed. He does well now & loves to come for a play date with my dog. I hope sweet Sally has found her forever home! No plans for Labor Day, but may take a bookcase back to IKEA. I can always put things together, but this one is off just enough that it’s not ever going to go together right!! Hoping to do a little sewing on Labor Day. I have rocking chair pads that need to be recovered. Our area is extremely dry & not much vegetation for the deer to eat. Even though I live sort of in a country area there’s a lot of building going on across the road. This forces the deer out & into our yards. Early this morning I saw a momma & baby drinking from my neighbor’s birdbath! That was probably after she ate my Impatients! Those flowers are on my porch now! Hoping that protects them! Everyone have a safe long weekend! Mary, so glad you’re feeling well!

Eating a quick lunch -1/2 done with mowing. Thought I’d check to see if by chance I could get the game. Looks like it will be on Roku. Yeah!! Better get busy. Should be done mowing around 3.

So glad Sally made it home! What a great story! We just got home today too, after a three week summer holiday in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. 4000 km round trip: we had a great time, visiting museums, hiking in the fiords, looking at waterfalls and glaciers, exploring the countryside and towns. We stayed in everything from an off-grid hut high in the mountains, to seaside boutique hotels, old country estates and modern city centre hotels. Today I am doing loads and loads of laundry! Back to work tomorrow.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Fiona – oh, what a trip! I can’t imagine being gone for 3 weeks but sounds like you saw a lot and had a great time!!

      1. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

Hi Mary, yes we had a great time. I have Scandinavian ancestry (mostly Danish) on my father’s side, so always enjoy going north! Three weeks is a lot: it is the longest vacation we have had in at least 20 years! We didn’t get away last year, but you can carry unused vacation days allowance over for one year, so this year three weeks was possible and we made the most of it! Saw some great textiles on our travels too, that I’ll post to my blog soon. We also went on 10 different ferries, from Denmark to Norway, within Norway crossing various fiords and from Sweden to Denmark and within Denmark from one island to another. All the water was very smooth, so I really enjoyed the ferry crossings: just sitting outdoors on the ferry while the car was in the hold, watching all the scenery pass by without having to drive or do anything! Very relaxing and nice and unhurried. I took a new cross stitch project with me too, so stitched away in the evenings: in the off-grid hut I used a battery powered daylight lamp to see by. The rest was candlelight and the wood stove, whcih my husband hugely enjoyed lighting and tending every night.

No special plans for Labor Day other than to finish the eight LWR quilts I have here. I just do the “fold back over the top” binding. Gathering days are next week and I know the quilters who sew and tie will be anxious to get the last of the 157 quilts packed and on the truck.
Today I’ll be hanging very wet towels from clothes bars outside. My washer decided to skip every spin cycle! Thankfully, we have a good service company nearby and I’ll call on Tuesday.
It’s a beautiful day today! 69* at about noon with a high of 73* and humidity and dewpoint are both down to 50*. So much easier to breathe.
Such a nice picture of Kaelynn with the chicken and of course, those special men in your life, Mary. I like the scrappy red/black quilt, too.
Ava, your “barn” quilt makes me wish I had bought the yellow and purple star I fell for at the farmer’s market pre-Covid. It would have perked up my view of our garage out the kitchen sink window considerably!
Have a great weekend everyone. Kris

  11. Cindy K

Loved the Sally story. Brought me happy tears. No special plans for the weekend. There are 3 small towns near us that go all out for Labor Day weekend-ball games, car shows, craft fairs, tractor pulls, corn hole, watermelon festival, dances, gun shows, etc. Been to all of them at one time or another but just not interested this year. Have a quilt on the longarm that’s caused me all kinds of trouble. Thread shedding and breaking-tension issues, etc. Finally got it all figured out but felt like taking a sledge hammer to it more than once. Weather is nice today so will go mow and then back to quilting. Looks like the game is on NBA so won’t be able to watch. My sister said when she can’t get the channel, she can sometimes watch on YouTube but has a blue square in the center of the screen so can’t see the whole screen. Might check that option out.

    Hey Mary –…
I was so happy to see that Caitlin had a great game against the Chicago Sky. Living in the Chicago area, the press was all rah rah over Angel Reese, rookie of the year…. well they are now no longer touting Angel Reese as the possible rookie of the year… they are admitting that Caitlin is having a fantastic rookie year… that’s pretty amazing for the Chicago press… makes my heart happy. That young lady has conducted herself with such grace, professionalism and class.
Labor Day plans… I plan on sewing with my new sewing machine. I always name my machines, so I can say, I’m going to spend time with Arlene (the embroidery machine) …. my new machine is named Nancy, because she’s so fancy…. so I mentioned to my husband, I’m going downstairs to do some sewing with Nancy….that was the first time I said that outloud… it made me laugh… simple things make me laugh…

Sally’s adventure reminds me of the book/movie “The Incredible Journey”. She knows where home is.

I’m not doing anything special for Labor Day. But, today, September 1st, I’m remembering my Mom, born on this day over a hundred years ago. She was an Iowa girl by birth. God gifted her with many talents: musically – soloist, organist, pianist; excellent seamtress, embroidery skills; teacher in public schools and privately for piano, a caring soul. Boy, did my Dad lover her pies! Our family was blessed by her presence. This day brings smiles and a grateful heart.

No plans for this weekend. Just glad to be home as the month was full of retreats. The weather is perfect and I hope to get out for a walk today. Missed it yesterday. I would like some sewing room time but lots of little things that need to be done keep me from that. I needed a veg day and yesterday was pretty much like that.

Glad to hear you are doing well Mary. When is surgery? I have lost track. Keep moving is my motto! Stay positive.

Like everyone, I love the story of the dog finding its way back home. I’ve been working at our county fair every day since Wednesday! It runs through Monday, so 2 more to go! I am I. The treasurer’s office all week working with people I e known for a long time. Always fun. I’m hoping to take a little time to walk over to see the monarch display today. They do a daily release at 5 daily and I’d love to see that. We are having some beautiful weather here. Wishing you a great day, Mary!

Hi, I’m about 4 blogs behind. It sounds like Bruce was well loved. It’s so hard to say goodbye to those who’ve been such a presence in our lives.
I looked at the picture from a previous blog of Hazel between your legs and then thought of the night she was out hunting opossum. What a chore at that late hour getting her cleaned up. I’m sure she keeps you amused.
You asked about ideas for dinner. It’s become such a dilemma as I feel we eat the same things over and over. And I think of all those chefs out there that actually enjoy cooking. Not I.
Oh my gosh the story about Sally is amazing. I keep wondering how do they know. Many years ago we had a stray cat arrive at our house. He became ours and I loved him. One day he decided to jump in the Dodge shadow and go to sleep in the back seat. My high school son at the time got in the car to go to wherever he was headed. Can’t remember. Well Tailer, the cat got scared and jumped out of the car while it was moving. My son came home and told me, later, what happened. I looked and called for him for a long time with no success. I thought he was gone forever. But he returned and again I wondered how he found his way home. There must be another sense they have that we don’t. I’m so very happy that Sally found hopefully her forever home.
Love the picture of your 2 boys.
Oh and the game. Holy cow I thought Indiana was in for a terrible loss during that first quarter. They really came back. Caitlin is amazing. I love watching her maneuver on the floor. She just calls the plays, passes off, creates opportunities, and she gets in the ref’s face and argues all the time. She is bold.
I did watch some of the para – Olympics yesterday. It’s pretty remarkable, especially those with prostheses doing what they do. There are so many different body challenges they adapt to and find a way to stay in the competitive game. My hats off to all of them.
My granddaughter has cerebral palsy and her right side is affected. Before she was born she has a cerebral hemorrhage. I often wonder how that happens. She participates in Special Olympics and plays basketball with a group that has multiple disabilities at her high school. She loves it.
I really like that quilt you posted a picture of.
Doing nothing here.for the holiday weekend. Our weather has been rainy, cloudy and now we have to worry about West Nile virus. I am a mosquito magnet and can’t go outside without being eaten alive. I went out and bought Deet to use. I’ve tried every natural product out there and none work for me. Phooey.
Thinking of you and always prayers.

There are no plans for Labor Day. I will do whatever I feel like doing when the time comes. Maybe put the borders on a Chandelier quilt. Then maybe I will knock down a few cobwebs in the basement for when the guy brings and installs my new furnace and air conditioner. It’s supposed to be soooo nice outside that maybe I’ll cut and Tordon some invasive honeysuckle. Then again it would be a nice day for sitting in my outdoor swing with a book. Or I could just watch the birds at the feeders. After all, it won’t be long before winter is here……sigh.
Have you noticed that the orioles are here again on their way south? I put out my jelly feeder again for them

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna Albright – I’ve had so many orioles for what seems like a very long period but I think yesterday they took off. And I just resupplied my grape jelly because I was using so much! I’m sitting in the porch now and there’s not one oriole at the feeder! I will miss them long with knowing winter is coming.

    2. Gail in Ohio

Ah, the orioles! We started feeding them a few years ago; they have stayed around longer this year than any year before. I suppose we are getting a few now on their way south – I saw one about a week ago. I am still putting out jelly – the other birds are still eating it, so I’ll continue and perhaps an occasional oriole will stop by for a snack.
I have noticed that the hummingbird numbers have dropped off significantly this week; they are usually gone from our area of Ohio about October 1. I greatly enjoy watching all the birds that frequent our feeders, but I’m kind of ready for a break from making nectar and filling jelly feeders! LOL! Then the jelly and sugar budget can go toward suet…

  18. Janet S

The Sally story is so heartwarming. All’s well that ends well. Yesterday, my stepdaughter, husband and I went to the little town of Amboy MN to our absolutely most favorite restaurant ever. It is so small that it only holds 28 people so you need reservations. The best food (and deserts) ever. It’s an hour and a half drive so we set the day aside for this special treat. I had a raspberry, chicken salad – fabulous! Then topped it off with peach-almond crunch pie with whip cream – way too good and worth the calories. Today, we are serving coffee at our church so some baking last night to get ready. My son will be here this afternoon to help with some yard work. Tomorrow will be quiet which is fine with me. Our weather is beautiful so that is good as the Minnesota state fair is wrapping up. No, I don’t go because of the enormous crowds. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe and happy labor day.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janet S – our very first employee, Roxanne, was from Amboy – before her I had never heard of that town.

  19. Lynette in Orlando

Certainly was a blog about a lot of things this time!!! Love it!!!!

I was just talking to a friend about “the dash” – (on our gravestones, the dash between birth and death and what we do with that time.) Bruce had a life well lived and made the most of that dash. What an honor to him and his life with all the people there to remember him. We should all be so blessed.

You brought tears to my eyes over little Sally! What a beautiful ending! My current pup is a rescue as well and the first weekend I had her she escaped out the door as I went to get the mail…… fortunately I was able to corral her and get her back into the house, but boy my heart was in my stomach!!! Sally is definitely going to be well loved as all pups should be.

Mary, you are SO correct about Caitlin….. I am not a basketball fan, but she has done more to put the WNBA in the spotlight than anyone. The way she has been treated, in my opinion, is appalling. She seems like she has a good head on her shoulders and I hope for all the best for her. Her success is great revenge!!! Enjoy watching those games!

Hope you and everyone reading this has a wonderful week!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynette – I read all the chats about The Fever and Caitlin. Saw the Chicago paper headline after the Sky got tromped by the Fever. That rough team had it coming! I believe that’s called karma or as I say – what goes around, comes around. Caitlin is the most unselfish player I’ve ever watched and so well spoken at press conferences. I’ll say it again – she’s Iowa Nice.

  20. Shirleyf

I’m happy to hear that Sally found her way back home. She seems to be very special. Thank you for posting the Fever schedule. I read your blog every day. I’ve never watched basketball, but your posts have prompted me to watch. I have really enjoyed the games so I hope you will continue to post the game days. By the way, I didn’t even know that we had an NBA channel! Ha! Ha!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Shirley f – is your NBA channel actually ESPN? I’ll have to wait till game time to figure it out, I guess. Glad I converted you to the WNBA – I will definitely have withdrawal when it’s over but don’t you imagine the players are exhausted?

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Shirley – if you’ve never been interested in sports, think of the fun ahead! I follow college football just because there’s no basketball to watch but when the women’s season is over I’ll be very sad. I’ll see what else we can all get interested in.

  21. Kathy in NY

It was Kim so I stand corrected whom spoke about the different milk and cows. Thank you again for providing this information.

  22. Debra Oscarson

Rosalie, your comments made me laugh out loud. I sure hope you find that phone! I too, have a couple projects that I cannot find. They have to be in my sewing room but, alas, lost. Mary, I am trusting that your health is improving or is stable. Please keep us posted. AND, I am so thankful Sally found her way HOME!! This blog is the bomb!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Debra – I feel absolutely perfect – I’m anxious to hear what Mayo has to say about it all. It all feels like a dream.

  23. Paula S.

I love the story about Sally. She’s a smart dog to be able to get back to her new home!
This holiday the husband and I are staying home, grilling hamburgers to eat for a couple of meals. I need to get busy and make potato salad when we get home from church today!

  24. Rosalie

I’m going to rest and maybe sew some string blocks with Christmas fabric. We finished up our guild quilt show yesterday afternoon (Fredericksburg Texas). My bee had a Holiday Shoppe with lots of ornaments and other handmade items.

  25. another Shirley in Illinois

Morning. I have a wonderful, quilting friend who has invited me to her ‘hen house’ to sew on Labor Day. Diana’s husband put up a pole barn with a ‘office space’ attached to the barn. Diana has made it her sewing haven!! (hen house) With a large room with space enough for 10 plus quilters and their machines, a bathroom and small kitchen area (with air conditioning) it is the perfect place to sew!! Diana is generous to invite us on holidays and Saturdays to come and sew. It’s a great time to sit, sew, chat and solve the world’s problems (usually just encouraging and supporting each other). We order pizza for lunch. I wish you could come and join us!!

    1. Kathy in western NY

Shirley, now that is one very generous husband to share a pole barn space with his wife. He’s a gem. Installing more electric too for all we use. It sounds like a glorious haven to enjoy time with friends chatting and caring while you sew.
Also thanks to Kris I believe it was who mentioned in comments in last post about the difference in cows milk. I never knew this but am going to do some looking around here. Knowledge is power and it helps to know there are some other choices to consider.
Thank you on this Labor Day to all the people who have made our nation prosperous and livable with all the blessings we get to enjoy here. Whatever job is non too small nor less meaningful to contribute to making our lives better here.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Another Shirley – oh, wouldn’t that be fun? What are you going to work on? I need a new project that interests me.

  26. Susan in VA

I love the stories of dogs who find their way home. Sally must be an amazing little dog.
We don’t have any specific plans for Labor Day. We’re in the midst of downsizing and moving to our lake house — that takes all of our time these days. Hoping to be done with it all by mid-October.
As always, Mary, thank you so much for taking the time to do this blog. I hope you’re feeling okay. Keep us up to date on your health!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – no need to thank me for this blog – it’s my lifeline! I do not socialize – hate meetings and gatherings of any kind so I love chatting with everybody here. It’s just enough to be fun and not overwhelming.

  27. Charlotte in No. California

I’m so glad Sally’s story had a happy ending!! Loved all the pictures today. I watched the WV/Penn State game today. I love college football. Of course I wanted WV to win, maybe next week. The game was delayed 2 hours because of a thunderstorm.
    No plans for Labor Day.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Charlotte – I will need to get up to speed on college football – I like basketball so much better. Football now seems to be so slow – nothing happens for long stretches but I’ll get with the program soon.

      1. Jeanine from SE Iowa

Mary, The Iowa football game was pretty exciting yesterday. I did not watch it on TV, but listened on the radio, and especially the second half was full of action. Iowa won the game 40-0 over I think it was southern Illinois. I also prefer basketball over football.
No special plans tomorrow. We have invited a friend, whose wife went to MN today, for grilled hamburgers and I’m going to make homemade baked beans as that is a favorite of his. I use my husband’s grandma’s recipe.
Animals that find their way home after so long is amazing. We had a three chickens gone for a couple nights a few yesrs ago, and figured they were gone for good with all the predators out there. We were so surprised when they all three found their way back home a couple days later. We had corn all around our farm that year. I have no idea where they found water. I’m sure there were plenty of bugs to eat out there.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanine – do you use an old bean pot when you make homemade baked beans? I buy them sometimes at the thrift store and give them to my friends with the recipe inside. Some of my young friends don’t know what homemade baked beans are!

          1. Jeanine from SE Iowa

No, I do not have an old bean pot. In the summer I do them in the crock pot. In the winter I do them in a large casserole dish.

  28. patti

loved the happy ending for sally the dog. what a great home she will have.
i laughed about the pole to stick out of the snow. yep, in texas we had them to show depth under overpasses, and/or flood levels on back roads near where my folks lived.
today i got to sew some. picked out and cut 30 cat squares to use in happy blocks. then looked for solids to use. i had bought a batch of fat quarter bundles of solids for this purpose. picked out some and started ironing and cutting. will continue cutting tomorrow and hopefully start sewing.
no plans for the weekend. we used to always do barbeque on labor day and still may. who knows? happy stitching, patti in florida

    1. Beth T.

Oh, Mary, Sally’s story made me cry! I am so relieved she made it home, to a home she had barely seen but must have remembered as a place she knew she would find love and shelter. The look on her mom’s face tells the story of everyone who has ever been reunited with a lost pet (even when they’ve just been missing on the property or the house for way too long…). That was a bit of happiness I found very welcome. Thank you for sharing.

We are expecting a quiet Labor Day. John will be playing music on his public radio show, just like every Monday. I am busy trying to finish up some WIPs and (even harder) resisting the temptation to start any new projects. I just keep uncovering new things and working on whatever rises to the top, at the same time I consider what big event is coming up that I’ve already started a quilt for and wonder where the heck that half-finished project might be…Oh brother. Embarrassing but true, and I’m sure some quilters here will relate, while others will be like my best friend, bless her heart, who makes exactly one quilt at a time, each one a masterpiece, and when she completes that beauty she begins the next one. I love her but I am not her.

Beth, I have a list on the refrigerator of quilts and projects that are misplaced or buried under other things. I found one quilt that’s been MIA for 2 years but sadly not the others yet. I lost a portable phone in there about 15 years ago and haven’t found it yet!

    Hi Mary,
Attending your quilt camp was on my bucket list for quite awhile; however, so were a lot of other things. Having a three-day sale for a small shop had to be an incredible challenge. Sure hope you had a lot of help.

I’ll be working both Sunday and Monday, but still thankful to have two jobs. Sewing today involved prepping the backing for the crumb pieced quilt. Seven different fabrics were used.

Thank you for sharing the lovely photos. Way to go Sally!

Humid and hot here today. San / Murphy, NC

Love the picture/story of Sally, so glad she found her way home.
Planning on picking some of my apples and making applesauce. Hopefully I will have some time to sit in my porch and do some knitting on a prayer shawl.

What a sweet ending for Sally.
Great news…the local news reported most of our wildfires have a high percentage of containment.
I’m hoping no surprises pop up this week and I can do a lot of sewing.

I’d like to thank the American Workers for all they do day in and day out. Monday is the day to celebrate all you have contributed to this great nation. Jobs that no longer exist to jobs of the future, each has a roll in building the greatest nation in the world. Have a wonderful Labor Day.

Jo – what wonderful news that the fires are contained! I would be so terrified thinking it was inching its way to my home. Will you be returning to the prison soon to sew? Do you need anything?

I’m going to jail on Tuesday. I hope they were able to move all their supplies from the old pod to the new one. I’ll take a ruler…just in case.
I’ve been in the storage room where they have a section for donations. There’s plenty of fabric. I recently sent 4 rolls of batting. Thanks, but I think we’re ok for now.
P.S. my daughter in law came over and figured out and corrected some of my issues with this iPad. Thank goodness cuz I was ready to quit using it. Cold turkey on technology!!

Sally is adorable. I am so glad she found her way home and is safe with her mom.
Our anniversary is Aug 30 and we went out to a nice dinner. That is our Labor Day highlight every year and then we just stay home and well….labor. HaHa.

So glad Sally made it back to her new home! She’s so cute. We have been blessed with a little afternoon storms and light rain this week and only temperature in high 80s. I think we are getting the traveling hummingbirds now. They are draining our 4feeders quickly and there are more than we can count. Some even share the feeders but some still try to scare others away. We are getting ready to leave for Springfield, Missouri for a couple of nights. Meeting hubbys brother and wife to go trout fishing north of Branson and then to the Dixie stampede show and dinner. Then back home Thursday and doctor visit Friday . I hope you got my card okay. 🥰

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pamela – oh dear – should I have gotten your card recently? I can’t remember every single one

      1. Pamela Dempsey

I mailed it Monday and put 2stamps on it since I put a piece of chicken 🐔 fabric in it 😻🤭

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pamela – didn’t you see that I showed the piece of chicken fabric? I can’t send individual thank you notes any more – I’d be writing away any free time I had. But thank you!

No plans for us, some yard work and maybe a walk. So smoky here. They said to stay in side if possible. With winter on the way I want to be outside to enjoy the warm weather. Stay safe everyone

Wow what an amazing dog to find her way back and such a happy ending. My son’s dog bolted from the farm where he kept his horses early one morning, we searched all day and until 11 at night. Strangers came out to search as well, one lady lived an hour away and drove to help search. My son had posted on Facebook and we kept getting sightings and would rush over to where someone saw her and not find her. My husband and I were driving and there she was running down the road towards us. I got out of the car, called her name and she turned and bolted again. That night my son and I stayed at the farm and went out in the middle of the night and then again at 6am. We were driving around and got a call that someone had spotted her on the next street over, 1/2 km away, they stopped their car and called her and she jumped right in. I think by then she was so scared and exhausted. She was lost for 28 hrs. It was horrible. Ever since then, if I see there’s a dog missing I too try to go and search. I know exactly what they are going through.

What an amazing dog to find her way back.

Teresa – Laura said she had been spotted 2 miles away – that little dog? Think of all that running. Your story was remarkable – thank God it also had a happy ending! Another great book for kids! The stress and worry would put me over the edge!

      1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Yes,it was so stressful I didn’t eat all day with the pit in my stomach. My sons dog has had an interesting life. The woman who owned her before my son, rescued her from a puppy mill. They believe she was kept in a kennel and only let out once a day to go to the bathroom. When the woman rescued her she lived on a farm and not long after became very ill and for two years she was in and out of hospital. Her animals were all looked after but not the same as when she was home. Before she passed she had a plan for all her animals, 3 dogs and two horses. Mike was to have Spice. He has had her for 4 years. It took a few years for her to realize she could go to the bathroom more than once a day. Yet through all of this she is the sweetest most loveable dog. She is a poodle and so resilient. We all love her dearly. She always looked sad. Recently my sons partner got an Aussie shepherd pup, funny for the first time she plays like a dog should and she smiles and seems so happy. We think she was sad because all those puppies were probably taken away from her too early.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – I hate puppy mills more than anything else on earth and have heard other tragic stories like this. Poor dog – I’m thrilled that she’s happy with the new pup! She can probably remember her own pups. How terribly sad that this happens to dogs all the time across the country. Why can’t we stop it? Why aren’t those mill owners charged and put in jail??? I’d like to lock them up and let them out once a day to potty.

          1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Mary, I totally agree with you. In BC at least, they take the animals but the people never get jail time – instead they get charges laid against them and have to agree not to own animals again. What a joke. I don’t even know if the fines are ver paid. Probably not.
We have to be happy that spice was rescued and living her best life. My son is such an animal lover, him and his partner have a horse, two dogs, two rabbits, 4 birds and a mini pig (that weighs 100 lbs). The pig lives in their townhouse with the rest of the animals and is trained to ask to go outside to go to the bathroom. Not my idea of a pet but they love her. Her name is Hammie- short for Hamlet

          2. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – I never got into the pot belly pigs but I know how smart they are! I would love their menagerie- and when I was younger I had lots of animals. Sadly I’m too old now – they might outlive me. Sounds like Iowa – the fine is about $100 for animal cruelty and neglect – the laws seem to be so lax that the abuse never stops. I try not to listen or be exposed to any of it – I stay home and don’t want to see the things that upset me so much. I’m with your son – we need more animal lovers!

Bruce’s funeral sounds like a wonderful celebration of his life. May we all touch so many people in a positive way.
For Labor Day We’re headed back up to Iowa on Monday. The furniture will be delivered this week! Yippee!
My trip to the Fredericksburg area was wonderful once again. Many hours was spent on the porch watching the hummingbirds. They are migrating so are hungry. There were also deer and bumblebees 🐝. My sisters and I had a great time and much sewing, laughing, and talking was done.
The Sally dog story is one with a happy ending! I have a Sally granddog and she is showing her age. It will be hard to say goodbye when it’s time.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – the first dog I ever had here on the farm was also named Sally. She’s buried in the back yard with a grave marker and her likeness engraved. I will never forget her.

No plans for Labor Day except stay home. Labor Day is Four Corners Motorcycle Rally. Riders from all over descend on Durango CO & I stay away or take back roads if possible. Years ago we would go to watch the parade but not now. Just got back from AQS show in Grand Rapids MI & now want to get back to sewing.

  38. Paula Nordt

For Labor Day, we’ll grill some beef and some chicken fajita meat and make tostadas for dinner with yellow rice and refried beans. The pole to locate the fire hydrant made me laugh. Down here, we use poles to let drivers know how high the water can get on underpasses and other places during heavy rain. Also for marking historic flood levels. I like to hike at Brazos Bend State Park. On the observation tower, there are three markers for flooding during past hurricanes. The last hurricane, Beryl, did more damage with wind than flooding. The park just reopened to the public yesterday. It was closed for weeks while repairs were made and trails cleaned up. Some trails are still closed.

Loved the story about Sally, cried some happy tears. For Labor day I will be doing the Missouri Shop Hop. Mary I pray for you, hoping you are feeling ok.

  40. Chris

I’m in love with Sally. She looks so much like our little Nanoo, who passed away this past spring. He was our son’s dog, but I loved that sixteen-year-old pup. We are celebrating a special nephew’s birthday Monday as well as a friend’s. Two on the same day makes a really happy day. Hoping to find a little time for sewing.

  41. Sandi

I am going to my sons house and grill out with him and his family. Enjoy your day. Hugs, I love the story about the little dog. I’m so happy she found her way back!
