The Fever won tonight by a big margin but that first half was worrisome and not only scary, it was rough!

These have been great days to sit in the porch and read. I got this sweet gift from Mary Ellen with all the wonderful bookmarks.

I choose these two bookmarks to use first:

I’ve gotten sick of sewing, I think. Now I just want to spend my free time reading. I have read three of Sally Hepworth’s books in the last 10 days. I picked up another one today. Easy to read, some mystery, some family dysfunction – you know – light easy reading! Just for entertainment. I’m not looking to learn anything. I’m too old.
The MotherInLaw
The Younger Wife
The Soulmate
Today I picked up The Things We Keep
We got almost 1.5” of rain the other nite – here’s the sky before it started – ominous looking.

This is a gorgeous picture! Think about using these shades of pink, rose, green for a quilt!!! There is inspiration everywhere you look.

Not really sure what this is – saw it at the thrift store today and didn’t buy it but I loved the blue and white pattern. Would have looked great sitting on a shelf. I’m afraid it’s one of those great finds worth a lot and I passed it up. If anyone knows anything about this, speak up.

He wouldn’t even back in to the whole two spots!!!

I blew the motor in my old faithful golf cart so that was a hefty bill BUT new golf carts are expensive and I’ve bonded to this one. I can’t part with it now!

Molly visited one day this week – she likes to get comfy!

If all else fails, get a roll of Gorillia Tape and use it on your golf cart. Use plenty. You can be your own upholter person–ha,ha. We did that with hubby’s “Ranger” that he uses on the farm. It was the dog that ruined the seat–he jumps right in each time! I just bought a golf cart to use on our farm. It is electric and small–but it has a box in the back to haul my tools and stuff around. It took all of my sub teaching money anad church organ salary, plus mu mega garage sale money–but so worth it! And I do not golf!!! I went to school every day they called and the principal would say, “What are you going to do with all your money?” I always said, “I’m going to buy a golf cart and I don’t golf1” Hubby is a little jealous because it starts so easy and is so quiet.
Kathy – our golf carts are indispensable to us at our age. I’ve had many carts and wagons through the years but now I depend on Old Faithful. I really should just take the seat off and see what I can figure out. Guess I’m just lazy and dont want to do it. I know Rick tore the drivers side with tools in his pocket when he’d slide in. I should get some vinyl upholstery fabric and try.
Boy do I second everything you say about golf carts used for running around our properties. And not for golf clubs either! We’ve visited several people coming from FL now to live back here are bringing electric ones and upgrading so selling old one so we have been looking into battery replacement, etc. Interesting though there is legislation being introduced to make golf carts legal on the streets where our camp is. The village board though is stressing in emails not to let children run them crazy on the roads as that’s illegal and they don’t want it to ruin it for us older folks who just use it to attend a concert on the shore or to the market. Course they need seat belts, signals and lights so new ones have all the necessities. Ours now is basic but we can’t part with it and even have duct tape on the upholstery now.
Kathy – I’m thinking about trying to reupholster the seat. I’ll look for some fun vinyl and have Rick help me take off the frame. With a staple gun I think I might be able to do it.
The blue dish is quite pretty, and I would have bought it just because of its color. We have a lot of cheese stores here and they still make cheese in the round wheels, particularly at the holidays. I learned something new the other day while at a dairy/cheese store in Mosinee Wisconsin. They sell milk in large 2-gallon bags, but they sell A2 and A1 milk along with whole and skim milk. I had to look the A1 and A2 milk up. The amount of casein (protein) is the difference. Breeds like Jersey, Guernsey, Normande, and Brown Swiss have a higher percentage of A2 genes and produce A2 milk. A2 milk is claimed to be easier for humans to digest and may lower the risk for some diseases. I don’t tolerate milk, and I think I may give this A2 milk a try. I appreciate everyone sharing the authors they enjoy reading, I made some notes for this winter when I get more reading done. We had the tree stumps cut down and grounded the last 2 days and hopefully we can spray for weeds in our yard today. Then we will be ready for the landscapers before Tuesday. Our yard is slowly getting done.
I would have snapped up that cheese fish in a minute. I have a bowl and pitcher in that pattern, also a tea pot with cups and saucers. Have had them since the 70’s. Calico by Sfaffords England. My favorite dishes. Very expensive to replace.
Glad that the Fever is winning!!
I know what you mean about reading. Just finished Personal History by Katherine Graham. Wanted to read it after I watch “The Post” with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.
I would have guessed a cheese keeper, but don’t know if it’s vintage. Regardless, it’s beautiful.
Went to a garage sale this morning, it was a quilter who passed away three yrs. ago. Her daughter told me they’ve been measuring and sorting her fabric since April! There were tables and tables of nice fabrics, craft supplies, baskets, you name it. And good prices, too, fun!
Saw a truck just like your Little Red near my house yesterday, was it you, Mary?
Elin Hilderbrand is one of my favorite authors, also Anita Shreeve. Haven’t done much sewing with machines all summer, just some cross-stitch and sewing binding on a king-size quilt, phew!
I’ve been on a reading jag recently, too. Finished “First Ladies”, read “Rascal” by Sterling North, and discovered a “cozy mystery” author Elizabeth Penney. The first three book series takes place in an boutique apron shop. I just started the next three book series that takes place in a book store in Cambridge, England. Easy reads. I’ve noted other authors listed today to check out. Thanks for sharing.
Happy weekend all!
Jan
Sunflower, your raspberries are beautiful! Our patch isn’t doing as well this year. Last fall we decided that the two rows of raspberries had grown together and were getting out of hand. We dug up one row and sadly what was left haven’t recovered yet. This is the first year in a long long time that we haven’t had berries to eat, never mind freeze. I’ve usually made lots of jam by now. Hopefully, next year will be better. What a great card from Mary Ellen! I love that Hazel watches the games with you, Mary! And Molly looks so relaxed and comfortable in that chair! Cool here in MA today but the sun is out and the sky is blue! Jan in MA
I wrote down the authors that everyone named, thanks! I’m sort of picky about what I read so when I find an author I like, I will read everything that the library has.
Had a great day at the thrift stores yesterday! I got the perfect little cabinet for my kitchen to hold those things that get shoved to the back and are hard to get out when I need them. $22.95!! And also found a beautiful quilt hanger thing – handmade of wood with a heart cutout in the center and a flat piece to hang the quilt with. Its over 60″ wide and was just $20! The wood was stained but needs to be sanded and varnished so its smooth. Hubby said No problem. Yay!
Check this link out, Mary. It’s a cheese keeper and a very nice one. I doubt they even make them anymore.

I know what you mean about getting in a sewing slump. After awhile, though, I start daydreaming about sewing and then it’s time to go at it again. The sewing bug never really leaves us.
Looks like a cheese keeper.
I like the look of blue and white in home decor so depending on the price I might have put it in my cart. For the serious collector, one needs to know and be educated on the hallmarks of vintage pottery and ironstone. So many fakes and copies are available today to include vintage-look hallmarks.
The “on-line sale venues” are full of beautiful pics but wrong historical “facts” about many of the pieces offered. As the saying goes, “caveat emptor.”
Have a great weekend everyone!
Tea cozy?
Replying to myself! I didn’t realize it was glass, so definitely not a tea cozy! My favorite color is blue, so it really caught my eye.
Mary,
The raspberry patch is mine and the invitation is open! I can always use help picking.
My first thought on the blue dish was it was a cover for food at a picnic.
Finally a cool day here and the humidity is lessening.
We have tickets for the Michigan football game tonight! Looking forward to that.
I am reading The Women by Kristin Hannah as recommended on the blog. I’m enjoying it! Have a great day.
Sunflower 🌻 from Michigan
It’s ok to take the time and sit and read. Sometimes we just need to do that! I have been on the go all month and just want to veg for a few days. But baby quilts need quilting.
Have you read any of Elin Hilderbrand’s books? I love her stories with mystery, romance, and every day life on the East Coast.
Fran, the Hotel Nantucket book of Elin’s was my favorite. Her last one Swan Song wasn’t her best book to me but it’s being passed around now to all my kids who enjoy her as well.
The dish is a cheese server. I doubt that it’s very valuable, but it would look great anywhere. It’s blue and white, my favorite. Enjoy it because it’s beautiful.
Glad your golf cart could be fixed as yours is a work horse like ours is. My husband took his tools up to camp and helping a neighbor get his cart running again but it’s electric so he’s learning as he’s going thru calling battery shops (lithium batteries) and you tube videos. We have the gas one like yours. I’ve been having reading and sewing time here as I chose to stay home for couple days. He said the farm market across the street from us is all decorated with mums and pumpkins so very festive. Last 2 years my pumpkins haven’t even made it till Halloween with the heat. I’m going to check out your new author at the library.
Kathy – I wish I could buy a new seat and backs but they don’t make them anymore. My mechanic has lots of trouble finding parts. I have let every kid who ever visited drive it and it’s rough looking but that’s ok. I got it during a very rough patch in my life and I’d like to think we’re both survivors.
Mary, us too looked to replace the seats. I looked back at yours again and it appears to be exactly like ours. The far back is for holding golf clubs cause we wanted to add a seat there but could not even retro fit one due to the contour for bags. My husband did make a custom shelf for the front windshield area for a man at camp who has two different containers of dog biscuits (one soft, one hard) he drives around and hands out to the puppy dogs as we are out walking them. The man was so thrilled he immediately went down to the corner store and bought my husband a case of “iced tea” to give him since he declined any payment for wood. Like you being sentimental of holding onto it, we have stories of where the golf cart has gone in our life. Now it’s on a new venture at camp. It’ll come home for the winter to be used around home.
Kathy – the kids ride “sidesaddle” in the back and hold on to the golf club holders. It has served me well. I’ll never get rid of it.
Just a thought on the seats, you could have an upholsterer make new ones for you! No doubt it would be better quality all-around!
Cindy – do you remember our recent conversation about finding an upholsterer????
I recall you saying someone nearby. Was recommended by a blog-follower, it I did not see any additional comment. (I have a feeling that contact did not go well).
Jo, Lucky you. You can’t buy neighbors better than you have. We also have some kind loving neighbors, so we help each other out from time to time.
what a really neat gift you got from mary ellen. only another reader would think of something like that. patti in florida
I agree with Patti that only another reader would know what you like and bookmarks are always in use here. So very sweet of Mary Ellen to make such a cute card to hold them in. I still don’t want to think of you calling both of yourselves as dinosaurs. You were pioneers in quilting to me.
Kathy – oh, we are dinosaurs for sure – haha! Look how the quilts have changed since we were designing. She even made the box it came in – I was so impressed!
It looks like Hazel was keeping an eye on the game. It was half time when I tuned in. There were some terrific shots made by the Fever players. Hubs got home from the field and watched the 4th quarter while I gathered supper together. I was wondering how often the Fever has reached 100+ points? I’m sorry about your golf cart.😒 It sounds like you’ve already replaced the motor. Seeing your raspberry patch reminded me of picking them as a youngster. I think we ate as many as we picked! LOL!
I’m glad you posted that the Fever had a game last night. It was a good one, but I would have missed it without your post. That dish looks like a cheese dish. I’ve never seen one like it.
Martha – I wish the reader, I think it was Kim, had put her name on the raspberry picture. No, it’s not mine. The Fever doesn’t reach 100 many times – so happy it was against Chicago as rough as they are.
I do believe the blue dish is a cheese server. The pattern doesn’t look very old to me. Does anyone else know?
It’s still very hot here, around 90 today, but at least we got some rain. A friend fixed my mower, so even though my grass is very high, I hope to use it tomorrow. Or, maybe I’ll just wait until October 15th . . . First frost.
Loved the picture of Molly. What a funny pup.
San / Murphy, NC
The blue and white dish is for a wedge of cheese! Very neat!
Barbara – we don’t see wheels of cheese around here – only in the movies. I did consider it might be for a slice of pie.
Enjoyed the game this evening although the 1st quarter didn’t look good. Glad they got it together. And boy, the other team sure plays rough!
wow, the blue thing is very interesting. butter dish? kind of a weird shape. two pieces or one. maybe it’s a fancy cover to keep flies and other flying things off your food at a picnic? just a thought.
you know, it’s been kinda strange lately. maybe it is the season, near the end of august and probably close to change of seasons for you. not for us, we don’t get fall until maybe late october or november. plus i think we all have times when we don’t want to sew, don’t want to do much of anything, but we love to read. i love to read. finished a NUMA files book today ‘journey of the pharoahs’. fascinating. figure a pharoah from egypt decides to follow the sun and ends up across the ocean in the grand canyon. it was my seventh clive cussler book for the year. i’m starting ‘night road’ by kristin hannah next. i have very eclectic tastes in reading.
started to cut fabric today when i got a call from a very dear friend who lives very far away. whiled away a lovely hour and a half. miss her.
today would have been my dad’s 94th birthday. he passed in 2011. tomorrow is my mother in law’s birthday. she is in a memory home. it’s hard for my dh, as he watched my mother disappear into dementia and can’t stand that thought with his mother. ignoring it doesn’t make it better though.
there has been so much grief and illness lately that it is hard to think of doing some things.
happy days and stitching to all. may we all be lifted upward. patti in florida
Gosh, are those berry bushes full of raspberries? Oh my…they look wonderful! I would help pick if I lived nearby but alas do not. Everything looks lush out your way..we need some rain..almost 7 ” below normal..I do worry about the farmers and their crops. Enjoy a berry crisp or two for me.
Tomorrow I am visiting our library and have noted your author so will try your reads. Always good to find a new author. An author you might like is David Rosenfelt..easy read and always has dogs in it.
Took a nap today, now cannot sleep..sigh. night….
Sharon – that’s my problem with naps, too
Hi Mary, believe blue plate and dome is for cheese, big piece of cheddar cut from round cheese. Get it and enjoy
you are probably right. great catch. patti in florida
I do believe you passed up on a cheese dome. Looks fairly modern but I’m no expert. I only know it isn’t Spode because the MIL collects Spode. We’ve had a couple of nice rains this week; each about half an inch. Our trees are getting that Autumn glow but crops here are still green due to all the rain we’ve had this summer. It just seems like it’s time to read when we are between seasons. Too early to start fall clean up and too late for most summer things you didn’t get done. We are planning a trip to Gettysburg, PA later this fall so have been reading up on that. 4 books down and 1 to go so today I picked up a Mary Stewart novel that I’ve read several times before but always enjoy rereading.
Hi Deb, Gettysburg is certainly worth the visit, at least two days worth. It’s big. Are you heading over to The Old Country Store in Intercourse, PA? They’ve changed owners, so it’s not like it once was. There are some other fabric stores in that same area that are well worth visiting. Also, if you can get over to Lititz and visit the town. Ohhh how I miss PA, so much good food and interesting things to see.
San / Murphy, NC
Not sure what you mean. I have been visiting The Old Country Store for many years and it is still a great store, one of my favorites in the area. They have a wonderful selection of fabric, notions, quilts, gifts and a friendly staff.
Thanks for the tip about “The Old Country Store”, I’ve never heard of it. I doubt that we go there but perhaps could stop by if it is on our route to Gettysburg. We will be on the homeward bound part of the trip by then so even fabric might not entice me from getting home. We haven’t been to Gettysburg in 22 years so are anticipating this return visit. We heard there has been reconstruction in the Little Round Top area. I will have to did out photo albums to see what it was like the last time we were there.
Caitlin was on fire in the game today! What a nice win for them.
Is the blue covered plate a butter dish? It certainly is pretty and you might have to go back to buy it😂.
I don’t know what the blue thing is, but it sure is pretty.
Hazel watches tv with you…Loretta sleeps and snores during tv!!
My neighbors are the best. They mow my yards and keep our block the prettiest of the entire area. Both have mowers like yours Mary, and they have the back done in less than 15 minutes. It takes me 3 hours.
