Shocking! 7-12-24

On June 28 I had a CT scan because I’ve had a pain in my midsection since last winter and it was finally so bad I went to urgent care. On my 76th birthday during the party my Dr. called and said that the CT scan showed a mass in my midsection. A biopsy was set up for Tuesday morning.

I arrived at 7:15 – Rick dropped me off at the front door of the hospital and would come back in a few hours to pick me up. This was expected to be a simple needle biopsy and that in itself was pretty easy.

I was taken back to recovery when suddenly I had extreme pain. They rushed me to CT scan again and found that the mass has begun bleeding into my abdomen from the biopsy.

They ran, literally ran, me to surgery and the dr. went up thru my groin and cauterized the bleeder.. I remember them telling me to calm down. I asked them to put me under and they said the couldn’t, there was no time. I learned later this could have been fatal.

I was admitted on Weds and I’m still here. My belly area is distended with all that blood. They gave me a blood transfusion so think of all that blood they replaced that has to be absorbed by my body which can take awhile. The blood in my belly area is what is so painful but now I think they’ve got the pain meds figured out.

The first night I was in such pain I couldn’t wait to get home so I could kill myself. I cried most of the night.

It’s gotten better and I might even go home today. Keeper is so upset – I disappeared from his life in a blink of the eye and he’s spending the time in my van or under my sewing table. He will be wild when I get home but I will have two bed pillows over my belly so if he jumps I’m protected. Hazel, the sheriff, will be thrilled to see me but her size is easier .

I have not even seen Eric, Nikki and Camber but it’s an act of God that they’ve been here to help Rick. I am relieved that somebody is doing chores and cleaning litter boxes.

Isn’t it unbelievable that I said July 10, the day of the surgeries, was the deadline for the patriotic patterns? I’m sure I have orders at home but they might not get filled quickly.

Shocked hardly describes it!

Mary, I was shocked too when I read about your recent medical issues! I am thankful they were able to quickly take care of you and turn things around. Sending love and prayers for your complete recovery.

  2. Sandi from Oregon

Mary, I’m not sure if all the comments are showing up but please feel that we are all worried about you. I know it’s difficult to eat and drink but you might try popsicles. Sending hugs and dog slobbers,

We are in the car between FL and VT, and I’ve only just read this email due to spotty cell service. What a shock! I’m so sorry this has happened and will now have to rush to read the next email so I know how things are going.

  4. Brenda in Georgia

I can only say I was shocked and sad to hear you had to go through this. I don’t know any words to add to all your wonderful followers’ comments who all love you, as I do. If I could do something I definitely would but I guess we will all have to depend on those close to you who also love you. Since a multitude of prayers are being sent, may you feel well enough to persevere and prepare for your surgery. If anyone has the fortitude, you do. Wishing, hoping, and praying for you and Rick and all the wonderful inhabitants of your Chicken Scratch farm!

  5. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

Mary, I am one of your many, many friends that are praying for you and your healing, I hope you can feel the love we are sending to you and also to your medical team to get you through this horrible time. I know it’s hard to only rest when all your habits and responsibilities are nagging at you, but you need to take care of yourself so you can get back to caring for all those you love. It is probably a good thing all your friends don’t live close by because it would be a steady stream of people and food coming to your door. Being a farm woman I would gladly take care of that fat little cute goat, all your new chicks, cuddle all the kitties and take puppies for a walk through the meadow. I am a fanatic at cleaning pens, stalls and littler boxes so all that worry would be off your shoulders. Much love and many prayer coming to you, rest!

  6. Elizabeth

    Dear Mary,
I’m so glad you are home and resting. I’m sure that’s very hard for you, but maybe do some hand sewing on your porch with the beautiful view of Farmer Tim’s place? Lots of good thoughts and hopes for a speedy and non eventful recovery. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

    Dear Mary
Thank you for telling me how to get on your blog and read all the comments and reply myself. You will never lack for something to read again with all our replies.
I was sitting in the Antigo WI Culver’s ( fast food restaurant started in WI) and about fell off my chair when I read your hospital narrative.
God is not finished with you yet.
I send air hugs, prayers for everything positive for you and much love.

So many prayers are being offered up to our Lord and Savior for you. Our life is in His hands and he saved yours. Not knowing what the future holds we just have to trust Him. My husband was rushed to the hospital last Friday with a ruptured appendix He is 83. Is home now but very weak. That was shocking too but today everything is shocking. Prayers for you and Rick. Be good and do as you are told no matter how hard that is for you!

    1. Mary Beth in Missouri

Oh Mary!!! I have been praying for you since I read your distressing news. I’m not going to pretend to know how you feel because I don’t. However I know how I feel about your situation. I’m praying earnestly for you and Rick. Take care. ❤️

  16. Caro;yn Rector of Ohio

i have been in South Carolina with no Internet access on my table and couldn’t reply on my phone. Glad you are going home and the pain is being managed,
Went all the way to South Carolina to see my grandson graduate from bootcamp and I came down with covid on my second day there. Missed the graduation, but got to see my grandson before we drove home. Still recovering, and need sleep form a straight ten hour drive home. Your ordeal puts my covid(mild) in perspective.
Thinking those papers in your barn windows dont bother you as much either. LOL
    Prayers for you and Rick.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carolyn – the barn windows don’t seem so important now, you’re right. I missed seeing Eric, Nikki and Camber and you missed your grandson – both events out of our control.

  17. Caryn in Eastern Washington

Shocking indeed! I’m glad you’re around to tell about it; sounds terrifying! And still waiting on biopsy results. Praying that things will settle down and you have a full recovery. That sure got you lots of comments!

  20. Sibyl

I’m so sorry for your troubles, Mary! Will they need to do more surgery on the mass, or is it taken care of now. Please take care.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sibyl – no the mass is still there so I’ll go to Mayo for follow-up and probably surgery.

  21. Arlene from Colorado

Dear Mary, you have gone through a life-threatening situation and it will take some time to recover from it. Yes, it takes time for blood in your abdomen to reabsorb and it’s very painful! I as well, was rushed into surgery for an ectopic pregnancy that ruptured. These events are sudden, dangerous and painful. Now you must give yourself time to recover…I wish I were closer to bring you some meals, clean up after the furry friends and make you a good cup of coffee. Knowing all that you have done for others in your community and church I’m sure many will come to help you at this time. It takes its toll physically and emotionally. Your body has to recoup and gain strength again. Praying for you Mary…allow yourself time and not think about anything else at this time.

  22. Jeanie S, Central IL

Shocking is right! Mary, I am so sorry this happened to you. I read this last night, but it was too late to reply.
We are sending love and prayers. Take care and rest.
    🥰

  23. Barbara Onnen

Amazing that you are still blogging while in so much pain. Hope you are home. But what about that mass? Will it be coming out? Aren’t we fortunate to have friends and neighbors to hep out! I also learned that earlier this month when my daughter in Spencer had 3 1/2 feet of water in her basement. Mary, I wish you well in your recovery. Please keep us up to date on your progress.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – I’ll be going to Mayo as soon as the results of the biopsy are back. Whatever it is, it has to come out.

  24. Another Shirley in Oregon

Oh, my goodness! What an ordeal. So glad you’re home, and I suspect Hazel and Keeper are too. Take good care of yourself.

  37. Glenda from SE South Dakota

OMG, Mary. Thoughts and prayers will be going your way. Thank goodness it happened while you were
    still there. Take care now.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Glenda – if I’d been at home it would have been fatal. ON the other hand if I’d been home the dr wouldn’t have nicked the mass, would he?

  38. Donna Albright

I’ll be saying prayers for your recovery! I was wondering what was going on up there since there weren’t any blog entries! Then I said, she just got busy with something and we’ll all hear about what she’s done that makes us all jealous of the work you accomplished. Never in a hundred years did I expect anything like this. Sooooo, do what the doctor orders and get better. You may have to take it easy for a while, like it or not. There are many people praying for you!!

  39. Diane O

  45. Brenda in N Calif

Mary, what a horrible experience. So glad it worked out and you had immediate medical attention. Glad Rick has family with him.
I had abdominal surgery in May and am still not full recovered. Listen to the advise about pain medication and bms. The medication is necessary but you don’t want the problems they can cause.
Take all the help you can get and listen to your doctors advise. Both will make a difference in your recovery. Praying for you and Rick. So glad God was watching over you both.

  46. Norma

Praying for you Mary. Pain relief, good test results, and quick healing. Yes, let others give you a helping hand even though we all know how independent you are.

  66. Jackie in NY

Oh Mary that is so scary! I’m very thankful you were able to get the care you needed in the hospital for the bleed. Any word on the biopsy results yet? I’m sending healing thoughts and prayers your way .

  67. Barbara in New York

Mary, be very careful of the pain medication post recovery. They tend to cause severe constipation which is very complicated when dealing with abdominal situations. Keep up with your fluid intake and address laxatives with your doctor because this can build up after as little as 48 hours. The important thing you can do is REST even if you start to feel better. Follow your doctor’s orders and ask him about this.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – they gave me Miralax every day in the hospital and made it very clear what could happen if I don’t continue it. I’m not supposed to strain at all. I’ve hardly eaten anything however so??? I do have to start eating but I only want soft stuff – certainly no meat!

  68. Bernadette in NE Iowa

So sorry about your ordeal , but glad that you were still at the hospital for immediate attention. Prayers for you that you will continue to heal and for Rick that he can carry on with the chores at home. Rest and relax. Enjoy that porch.

I’m so sorry you are going through all of this. Praying for a quick recovery for you and good results from your biopsy.

  81. Rita in Iowa

Mary, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I just got around to checking my emails. I checked early this morning and decided you were busy. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it was something more serious. Just a thought to help with your recovery. Have a note pad close by to write down when you have taken your med and which ones. Write down when you have a BM. I know this sounds crazy but when you’re not moving around or eating as much it can sneak up on you and you will feel even more miserable. Write down any thoughts or jobs that need to be done so you won’t forget something.
Maybe even write down meals that are easy for Rick to fix or for others to fix for you. If people bring food make sure directions are included on how to warm them as you may not feel like doing it.
Have a clock or alarm handy, your phone and chargers and a whole stack of books to read.
Have a speedy recovery and I hope this wasn’t too much. Love and prayers coming your way.

  82. polly perkins

Oh no praying for a quick recovery for you. One never knows what each day will bring. Pain is miserable that is for sure. Glad that family is there to help Rick with chores. Take it easy when you get home.

I have just had my 2nd eye cataract one. It is painless and will be wonderful. In the mean time my glasses don’t work so am anxious for the next few weeks to go by quickly so I can get a new set of glasses.

Try to rest and relax at the hospital if you can and take it easy when you get home.

  83. Sandy

Mary, Angels were certainly looking out for you. I’ll pray for you and quick healing.

  84. Maria Zook

I read your blog regularly and I am distressed to hear of all you have been through in the last few days. Right now your priority if to rest and heal.

  85. Jeanne in Co.

Yep, four weeks to be calm and let some others help with chores. I was hospitalized for 4 days in May with a Gastro bleed, on intervenous drips for three of those days , two scopes into the stomach that determined a bleeding ulcer, that I wasn’t even aware I had. I only had two regular meals during those four days. Good news was that I did lose a few pounds. The Drs. sent me home with a walker since my hemoglobin was still very low and I was dizzy, tired easily and needed the walker for stability. Thought it would take a week or so and I’d be back to normal, but here it is July, and I am still using the walker part time. Hemoglobin is rising and that is good, but I didn’t realize it would take this long to recover. So Mary, sit on your lovely porch, grab a good book and an ‘iced tea’ and have patience. Sending love and prayers for your recovery.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanne – my hemoglobin dropped to acute anemia levels and yes, I feel very unsure of my walking – weak and dizzy. How’s your bleeding ulcer now?

  86. Ann in Virginia

Praying you are now on the road to recovery. You will be on my church prayer list tomorrow.

  87. Susan Sundermeyer

Mary, as with the others, I’m sending my love and prayers for healing. ❤️‍🩹. Now, we ALL expect you to heed your doctors orders, 4 weeks of taking it easy, letting others help you, and absorbing all the prayers being sent your way!

  88. MN Jo

I am so sorry to hear this. I understand how things can change in a heartbeat. My hubby was rushed from church Sunday by ambulance to the local hospital. Wasn’t expecting to spend 3 days at his bedside, but happy every thing is fine. I’m keeping you and your family in my prayers. Hopefully you will feel better soon and get to go home. Take care and God bless.

  91. Sue in Or

Shocking is Right!!! I read it again to see if it would change…it didn’t. I am horrified this happened to you, but so grateful you were already in the hospital and not at home when it happened. Yikes!! Then, I started reading the comments that went on and on and on. See how much you are loved? That said, we need you to take good care of yourself. Rest, relax, read, pet the animals, and probably no sewing for a while. LOL
Take good care, Mary. Let us know how you are when you can and only when you feel like it.

  92. Linda K

Oh Mary! I am so sorry this happened. My mother had a similar experience years ago. Went in with an ‘asthma’ attack and day of dismissal was lifeflighted to a major hospital. When they did exploit our surgery they found a huge blood clot and no more bleeding. But left the clot to be reabsorbed! They never knew what caused it! Medicine is wonderful until it isn’t. You are a strong person and will recover from this. You have so many people praying for you. Take care of yourself.

mary, i’m so so sorry to hear this has happened to you. thanking God that you were still in the hospital when the bleed was found and they could help you immediately. thankful that they finally have the meds figured out to control the pain. i can’t even imagine. prayers have already been sent up and will continue. yes, rick and your pets will be waiting for you. but remember, you cannot help them if you don’t take care of yourself first. you are enough like me in that respect that i feel i can say this. you MUST put yourself first now. like in an airplane, put the oxygen on yourself first, so you can help others. it will do no one any good if you end up in the hospital again, least of all you. please do what the docs tell you. we will all be praying for a quick recovery and resolution to the initial problem. we will also wait til you are able to talk to us again. i do thank you for reaching out now. i just figured you were busy with family. prayers and gentle hugs, patti in florida

Oh Mary, you don’t do anything half-assed do you? SO sorry your biopsy went sideways, SO thankful you were still at the hospital when it did, SO glad they were able to get your pain under control. And what a blessing Rick has family there to keep things together until you are recovered. Speaking of which, you know how good it feels when you are able to do something kind and helpful for someone else? Please allow others to experience that good feeling also.
Everyone who reads this blog would be there in a heartbeat if we could. Just know in our hearts and through our prayers we ARE with you!
    Wishing you a speedy recovery,

Pat in AZ- nope, nothing half-assed! Haha! God was looking over me in many ways and yes, I had already decided I would take people up in their offers and I’ve had MANY! I also know that my readers would be willing to help if they were close by. I’m waiting to be dismissed now. To go home with many restrictions for 4 WEEKS!!!!!

      1. Pat in AZ

Oh my gosh! That’s a long time and will be so hard for you! You’re used to keeping busy but please listen to your doctor and listen to your body. It will tell you what it needs if you listen. So glad you are getting to go home and so glad you are willing to accept help.

Indeed shocking! You are so lucky you had instant attention. I highly recommend Mayo to address that mass! They saved my life, Hugs and prayers browsers your way!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna – Mayo is pretty much the only place I want to go and how lucky are we that we live so close!

      1. Donna Sproston

The team of doctors, technicians, and nurses are incredible at Mayo. I will return in September for my latest six month scan and then go on the yearly visit plan. Because of the widespread use of Epic software, they know everything my local PCP is doing. Whatever combo of chemo, radiation, and /or surgery, you will be in the best hands. Hope you are feeling better. I was hospitalized with severe anemia in October so I am on the iron and stool softener regimen. Aging is not for wimps, but it sure beats the alternative!

  103. Barbara Yarnell

Praying for a quick recovery for you and a good result on the scan. I’m so glad that your bleeder was found and treated before it was too late! Take care and rest while you can. We look forward to your going home and feeling better. Sending hugs.

  104. Jean

OMGosh Mary! I am so sorry to get this news. I hope you get to go home today where people love you and can care for you (pups included). Please advise biopsy results when you get them. Prayer is so powerful!

‘Shocking’ is right … what a nightmare! I sure hope they’ve got your pain meds sorted out so you can go home and rest. Your whole family will be thrilled to see you .. including your animal family, who don’t understand why you’re gone. The good thing with animals, is that they only care that you come home, not where you went or how long you’ve been gone. Take it easy when you get home … it’s your turn to be cared for!

  126. Marian SE MN

Mary, sorry to hear about your saga. I will say lots of prayers for your recovery. 🙏🙏🙏

  127. JudyE

  145. Patricia E Campbell in AZ

    Oh dear Mary!!
I’m so glad God was with you and kept you here on this side of Heaven for the time being! What a terrible birthday present though! Who would have thought a biopsy could do that?! I hope you heal quickly and survive the canine onslaught when you get home!! Do let us know how the biopsy turns out. I will be praying for you daily!!
The weather here has been so overwhelmingly hot, I’m just exhausted every day from my chicken chores. I lost half my flock in June. It’s been a rough summer. I’m amazed by how many quilts other ppl churn out!! I’ve been trying to make a pair of overalls for my grandson and keep having other chores interrupt me. I think he’s outgrown them before they’re even made!! 😂

  146. Gloria from CC

Good grief Mary!!! I can’t believe what you’ve been through this week. God was watching over you when you had complications. What if that had happened after you got home?!?! My prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. 🙏💕

  147. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

Oh Mary, shocking doesn’t even begin to describe this! What a ghastly experience for you! And for Rick. I’m glad he wasn’t home without help. At least you were still in the hospital when things went south and could be treated immediately! I hope you are feeling a bit better and that the pain meds are helping. Fingers crossed for good result from the biopsy. And also that you can continue recovering at home soon. You will have to take it easy, even though that goes against the grain! I am sure your friends and neighbours will step up and help you and Rick.
    Get well soon, Mary. ❤️

    1. Li

Sounds like your timing was the best gift anyone could hope for. 149. Sue

So sorry this has happened, but so very lucky you were already at the hospital! I ha emergency surgery some years back because I had bleeding adhesions in my belly. The pain is EXTREMELY painful from internal bleeding. I passed out from the pain before they got me in to surgery. So I really feel sorry for you. I will be praying for you for a quick recovery and good news from the biopsy.

    1. Li

Hi Sue, I hope that you continue to benefit from treatment and that Mary will have a great outcome also.

  150. Jamie in Phoenix

Oh dear! Tons of your fans are pulling for you. Years ago I was having abdominal surgery and I was worried my cat would jump onto my lap. A co-worker made me a wooden tray that set over my lap when sitting in my recliner. It protected my belly and the cat was able to jump onto the tray.

  151. Darlynn Venne

Mary! I am blown away by this news. I am grateful family was with you, the animals are being attended and you are here keeping this community together.

  152. Kelli

Oh Mary! So glad you got the help you needed. God wants you around a bit longer and all of us are very happy about that! Prayers going up for your quick recovery. ❤️

  155. Jan in AZ

Shocked is an understatement – especially for you! Providence that your family was coming for a visit – now there to help. Providence that you were at the hospital when the bleeding happened – immediate help by the skilled medical team to get things under control. Your mind must be swimming with all sorts of scenarios. For me, that is when I recall the first few words of one of my favorite verses – Psalm 46:10 – and breathe slowly, clear my head of clutter, and rely on God’s peace. You have a giving, servant’s heart, Mary, which sometimes can get in the way of allowing others to do the same for us. Taking care of yourself is the priority – people will step in to help you, Rick, the farm and your precious animals. Help abounds in many ways to take care of things as you recuperate. Utilize those resources. I know you, along with Dorothy in Oz are saying, “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” May you feel well enough to be there very soon. Prayers for answers and peace.
    Jan

  156. Dale

Oh Mary! Please take it easy on yourself and give yourself time to heal! People who have ordered will certainly understand the “pickle” you are in! Concentrate on YOU! Yesterday, I was looking for something else in my sewing room and tan across the punch needle pattern for Dandy! 🤦‍♀️ So many projects, so little time! Hugs for healing!

Isn’t it funny how things can change in the blink of an eye? Well, not funny maybe….
Have they told you what caused the mass in the first place? I hope you’re feeling better by the time you see this, and that you continue to get better.

  179. Alice in SW Ohio

I think we’ve just found out next card recipient! Why don’t we shower Mary with cards? That should help her heal much faster!!

  180. Jan B from TN

Omg! I pray you’ll feel better soon. Inn2019, my husband experienced a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) that measured 10cm, which is huge! I rushed him to the ER because was literally writhing in pain. Our local hospital took a quick ultrasound & discovered the rupture. The ambulance took him 35 miles to the nearest hospital that had a cardiothoracic surgeon. He received many units of blood on the way to the hospital. Surgery was a success & he has a long scar (45 stitches) to prove it. He could have died anywhere from me driving him to the hospital to the ambulance ride to the OR. After surgery, his surgeon & others told him he was the luckiest man in TN. Rarely does anyone survive an aneurysm that size. He was in ICU for almost a week & then in a rehab facility for about 3 weeks to help him regain his strength. I truly hope this is NOT what you have because you’ll need major abdominal surgery to live comfortably. Please be sure your hospital & dr are confident in their diagnosis before they send you home. Maybe a second opinion?? Your symptoms & description sound eerily like my husband’s experience.
    Prayers for you Mary. 🙏🤗

    1. Li

Hi Jan, Thank you for describing this harrowing experience. You knew exactly how prompt attention in the face of such unexpected circumstances can mean everything. He is indeed blessed.

Mary, Shocking is right! You never know what life will throw at you. I hope all goes well with your recovery and you will be on the mend and back to mowing soon. I wish you the best.

My daughter (who lives in Wisconsin) came up to my cottage in Michigan in mid June. She texted me that she had pain in her stomach. Two hours after she arrived , I took her to the hospital ER in Cadillac, at 6:30 pm. She had some tests and a cat scan,, it was her appendix and it had to come out – now. . Surgery was a couple hours later. by 2 am they said she could go home! When I was 15 years old, I had my appendix out, I was in the hospital for 5 days!! It’s amazing how they do things now. She had a nice peaceful recovery at the cottage and stayed for 10 days which she had planned anyway. What she didn’t plan was an operation!

  184. Elaine Kopischke-Trejo

Wow!! Thank dog you were at the hospital when the bleed happened!! I am so sorry this has happened to you. Thoughts for a speedy recovery and ability to get bs m to what you love.

Good grief Charlie Brown, let anyone/everyone help you like you help others. Am sure lots of prayers are being said for you, including mine. Keep us posted when you can.

Mary, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
So glad you have family and friends there to help.

  193. Bonnie McKee

Oh Mary! This is very shocking! I’m praying you will heal quickly and your strength will be restored so you can return to the activities you enjoy.
Thank you for thinking of all of us who enjoy your blog! 🙏🏼🩷

I’m truly sorry to hear about your pain, Mary. So glad that you were in ‘the right place’ and the appropriate care was immediate. Now, waiting on the results of the biopsy has to be so unsettling. Know that many, many friends and loved ones are thinking of you and wishing you well.

  195. Iowa Rachel

Oh Mary, prayers for your healing. How dedicated of you to share with your blog readers. Take care of yourself!!

  196. Cindy Sabinske

OMG! 😱 😳! One doesn’t know what journey our health can take us. Yours was a roller-coaster. You had excellent care, and thank god they were able to stop the bleeding. Now, there is a what is next for the mass in your abdomen. I am reeling in shock. I hope you will get home health care for you at home if you need it. You’ll have to accept help from others until you get better. Baby Steps for you. You are tough and will get thru this. It’s Rick’s turn to help you now.

  197. Shirley Andersen Smith

    Oh Mary,
I feel so badly for you. I hope this is just a little glitch but I am praying for you. This is your time to take it easy and rest. I hope some neighbors and friends are nearby to help out.
Hugs to you and just sit back and do nothing for awhile.
The Quilters Affair is going on here in Sisters, OR this week. I will send photos of the quilts from the largest outdoor quilt show this side of the Missouri after Saturday. Ha.

      Shirley,
Enjoy the quilt show! I attended many times in years past but now my health prevents me from going.
I’m glad it isn’t as hot as it was a few days ago.
I’ll be thinking of you and hope you have a wonderful time!

I am so sorry …….please take care of yourself. A fast recovery to you…. and I am sure no one will be worried about the patterns arriving on time.

  199. Casey

Shocking for sure! Hope you return to your normal life soon, but don’t be doing all the heavy lifting you normally do. If people want to help, and I’m sure they do, let them!! Hope all will be well.

I’m so sorry to hear of the pain, surgery, etc. As others have said, I am thankful Rick has help at home. We are all praying for you. One never knows what will happen when we get up each day.

  201. Beth T.

Oh my word. This is not the way you intended to start your new year. I recommend a “do over” once you get home. Sending so much love–to you and to all of those who are pining for you at home. Whenever John or I come home from the hospital we have to be “snuck in” to the house or we’ll be mobbed by the dogs and cats who have been frantic with worry while we were gone. I suspect you’re in the same boat, which is kind of sweet.

  202. Mary duval

Oh Mary so sorry to hear about your emergency you are right the blink of your eye can a person’s life. My thoughts and prayers will be for you and a speedy recovery .

  203. Mary Dyer

Shocking indeed! My heart goes out to you and I’m saying many prayers and thinking positive thoughts for your speedy recovery. You have cared for so many over the years, now it’s time for you to be cared for. ❤️

  204. Terri S

Omg! Prayers for a complete and Successful procedure. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Hoping the mass they find can be surgically removed. You are in my daily prayers

  205. Wanda Delgado

Biggest hugs to you, Mary.! As in quilt-making, what looks random in your life right now will probably become a clear design much more harmonious than anything you’re imagining at the moment. Pain distorts perception terribly, so I’m glad the pain is under control now. Just to let you smile (I realize even laughing may hurt in this moment), today is the very first day in a very long while that I could write this comment without having to go to the blog, and the first time in more than a year that all the ads appeared in your posting to I could click to open as much as I wanted. Could it be that the Sheriff and Keeper have decided to take technology matters into their own paws while you’ve been away?

Take all the time you need to feel better – you can be sure that your zillion “nothing” friends are waiting to applaud you when you take your next step toward home.

  206. Suzanne

Glad I was sitting down when your post came in to us morning! How frightening, Mary. I’m offering prayers and praises this morning! Thank God – literally! – for the staffs’ immediate response. Will be praying for your complete recovery!

  207. Deb R.

Wow Mary! So glad you survived the biopsy. Mercy has been a busy place. My good friend just had surgery on Monday and I took my husband to the ER on Wednesday night. No place any of us wants to visit. There’s no place like home. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  208. Margie

Oh my! Please take care of yourself. I know you are a worker bee, but please don’t overdue. Prayers are coming your way for sure!

  209. Lynn in Wis

Oh, how terrible!!! Thankful though that you are on the road to recovery. And so thankful for good medical care to save you. Wishing you a speedy recovery. So enjoy your blog. And I just received Dandy in the mail so someone’s mailing those patterns out. Love it. Take care and keep those pets in line, don’t let their love set you back.

  210. Mary Says Sew!

Oh, Mary, how awful for you! I hope your recovery goes smoothly and quickly from here! Sounds like you got the care you needed, though.

I was quite relieved to read you have helpers coming by to give Rick a hand. We know you appreciate them. We all need a back-up team!

This is certainly not the way we want to mark a birthday!

  211. Jan

So sorry to hear this , Mary. What a scary time for you. Will pray for a good recovery so you can get back to your animals and your quilts.

  212. Linda

I, too, will be praying for you and quick recovery. We never know what each day brings to us. I just heard word this morning that my oldest brother in Minnesota passed away last night. He was 85. Take care of yourself, and I am so glad Rick has help during this time.

      1. Jeanine from SE Iowa

Teresa – Thank you. Yes, it was sudden. Maybe a heart attack……not sure yet. He fell in the night going to the bathroom, and his wife found him in the morning. They were in assisted living. She wears a C-pac at night so didn’t even hear him.

  216. LaurenM

What a shock. You take care of yourself and don’t do too much too soon. Wishing you well.
