I have had a really busy Sunday – I won’t bore you with the details. This is one thing I did today – I made hot dog relish.

Church, company, calls, and replacing water buckets for the animals because of the heat.
Give me a pass tonight and I’ll get back to posting tomorrow.

I haven’t done much canning this summer. I’m putting as much as possible in the deep freeze!
Also, Mary, stay safe tonight! I just saw where your area could get some ugly weather overnight. Hazel will be close by I’m sure!
Paula – that dirty little body will be cuddled up close!
Such lovely canned relish. My mom used to can, but she never taught me how. I regret that.
My husband’s aunt made currant jelly that we were eating long after she had passed. Wish I knew where the currants came from.
Hot and dry here. Last rain was the beginning of June.
Lynn – no rain since June? We had another 1.5 last night. I’m not really complainng, just comparing. I have never seen such a green countryside and crops as this year! Usually the lawns have turned brown by the end of July.
Thanks for the quick post and yes…you get a pass!
I always look for your emails…usually in the morning but sometimes I get one before I go to bed. Just a quick note is great so we know you are ok. I think I’ve already commented once that mom emailed me at bedtime so I knew she was ok. I told her she could just say “good night” and that was good. I knew everything was good across town and I could go to bed.
I’ve canned a lot of things but never made hot dog relish. I will look up a recipe. And next year maybe I can make that. I dehydrate herbs like sage and basil and I bought one of the vacuum sealers for canning jars so will start doing that once we are at my mom’s. Packing went well yesterday. We are going to get higher temperatures this week too. I’m so thankful for air conditioning. Take it easy everyone.
Mary,
Happy Monday! Your canned relish looks tasty! I saw my Kroger store had big boxes of peaches yesterday. So tempted to buy a box and can them. I love them all winter!
With the heat yesterday, I stayed inside and worked on a UFO embroidery project. I’m on the last square before it becomes a quilt.
Watering my garden this morning as it’s going to be really hot today. Going to take the chickens some ice cubes and fresh cold water. Take care everyone! 🌻
That’s a lot of work. How are your knees? My back would be killing me, but the rewards are so nice. Stay cool
Nothing like homemade relish and homemade pickles. I miss my mother in laws homemade Iscicle pickles. They were crunchy and tangy. I know it was a long process to make them but I’ve never tasted anything like them since she passed.
Hope your weather is okay today for your outdoor chores. Be careful in this heat.
Kathy – we had a huge wind come up last night – yesterday there wasn’t a twig in my yard – this morning there are huge limbs and leaves covering the yard. I’ll bet there are trees down in the grove.
Do you have her pickle recipe?
We were on the road all day yesterday from east central Indiana to Madison, WI to stop for the night. We had a great dinner at an Indian restaurant with our son and his girlfriend. Today we’re in the car again across Wisconsin to Duluth to visit our daughter and son-in-law for a week. The weather has been HORRIBLE in Duluth—pouring thunderstorms, unusual heat, and bad wildfire smoke from Canada—but much nicer weather this week is predicted . The smoke has cleared and it’s supposed to be in the 70’s by Wednesday. Thank goodness! We’re planning to spend most of our time outdoors enjoying the beauty of northern Minnesota and Lake Superior. Long drive, but worth it!
Sue – she lives in one of the prettiest places in the US! One time Becky and I drove to Duluth for the weekend – we’ve been there several times and love it! I’m sure they had storms last night because they reached us as well. Another 1.5 rain!!!
Good for you! Canning up something great feels so wonderful! We barely have a garden anymore, so I try to get produce from the farmstand and sometimes are blessed with friends who share their bounty. Seeing filled jars on the pantry shelves fills me with comfort.
Erin – I agree! When I first moved here in 1979 I canned a lot – Mom guided me when I didn’t know things but these days it’s not worth it – I love canned peaches but the only kind we get are hard like apples and never seem to ripen. The hot dog relish can’t be matched so I try to make enough to last a couple years.
I also took a day off. Basically, we went to church and other than that I made an omelet for supper. We were predicted rain, so I didn’t even water the garden and we did get rain and nasty weather with more coming today. It looked like all of Iowa got wet too.
Janet – we had a terrifying windstorm and another 1.5 rainfall – this morning there isn’t a clear place on my yard without leaves, twigs and branches.
I’m planning a canning day soon – even though it’s hot here.
Relish looks great! Get some rest – hope you sleep well. Jan in MA
