Storm! 3-5-25

Power went out last night – evidently it wiped out my post, too. I went to bed with an extra quilt and don’t know when the power came back on but Tim and Ellen still don’t have power this morning. It’s. Real mess here.

My neighbor’s car is in the ditch right across from our house!
Dogs are having a great time!

I am so thankful we have power because this is supposed to go on all day – we’re all safe, warm, have plenty to eat – and my sewing machine awaits!

I hope this post goes thru – I think it will. We are so dependent on electricity it’s scary.

BRRR! This the reaction of someone who has never lived with snow. The pictures are pretty, though.
No knead bread – I’ll have to check that out.
    Stay safe and warm all.

As I scrolled through your storm pictures, my eyes were drawn to the snow covered windows. On the right one, left upper pane, I swear I see a dog sitting to receive a treat. Can anyone else? What about on the right pane?
Here in the Richmond area, we only had heavy rains and wind. But some schools let out early because of the tornado watches.
Glad your power came back on quickly. In the late 90s, we went a whole week during Christmas without power due to an ice storm. We didn’t have a generator at that time. Last week, we had a major HVAC equipment failure during the last snow storm. No one was coming out to do calls. So we sat by our puny gas log and cranked up the electric blanket. Thank goodness we still had power because I was miserable enough. We are resilient but whiny about such things.
Hope your cough is getting kicked to the curb.

May tomorrow be a better day. It was 50 w/ wind now 37, really windy and cold here in SW Ohio. We have a near whole house generator. My sewing room and 2 bedrooms aren’t on it. It is peace of mind. Thank goodness for those quilts. I had one at an indoor soccer game tonight. Hard to heat a large building w/ this wind.
We live out in the country so we have well stocked pantry, frig and freezer well stocked.
    Spring is coming🌷

  4. Jeanie S, Central IL

Last night, this post tried to come up, but it just had Country Threads and the date. I am glad your power is back.
I wanted a whole house generator, but after some discussion, we came up with a more budget friendly plan. Since our travel trailer can be kept at our house, we bought a large enough generator to run the entire camper. I can be a real whiner if it is hot/humid without AC. 🙄 I have a small sewing machine for the camper. As of this morning, we had gotten 2” of rain. Today was windy with light snow, no accumulation.
    Take Care, 🥰

    Mary,
Wow, your weather has really changed! The pictures are beautiful of your outside area and barn. Looks like the dogs had great fun!!
I really liked the cat tower quilt from yesterday! Also am late getting my thimble answer in, but here it is. I use a leather thimble with a metal disc of some sort in the tip. I had it made by a Mennonite man that does leather work for horses, etc, for the Amish community. Near my parents farm in Michigans thumb area, there are a lot of Amish and Mennonite people. I had him pattern it off a leather thimble I had been using for years and it just fell apart. I only use the thimble for hand quilting and mostly sew bindings on by machine now.
I hope everyone affected by the snow stays warm and safe. Mary, MSU plays tonight in men’s basketball if you’re sewing! I’ll be glued to the game and doing some hand work. I joined a stitch-along that is called Snowballs and Snowflakes, just for fun! Take care. 🌻

Mary, we are still being affected by the same storm that hit you with a blizzard. Last night and today it was rain for us. Next up, snow and wind starting this evening. We have both a gale warning and a winter weather advisory through Thursday. Hopefully, we don’t lose our power. Janice Traverse City area

We had terrible rain today. I don’t mind rain as we need to replenish our reserves but slashing rain forget an umbrella no good. At least it is in the 50’s so nothing to complain about. Looks like great soup weather and no knead bread. If folks haven’t tried it. It makes the best peasant bread for a soup side.
    Stay warm and safe.

    1. Cindy in Minnesota

Haven’t heard of no knead bread..I would give it a try! My neighbor was going to have card club today and she mentioned she was thinking of making a peach dump cake but did not have a recipe. I looked some up, tried one but should have made recipe #2. Then we started to discuss our favorite desserts. I really like the Jello and cream cheese with jello dessert. I made that up and gave her a couple of pieces. Once I make it well, it does not last long. So, I would give the bread a try. I like Raspberry jello better than strawberry but did use fresh straw berries for the jello. I got binding #2 on my sampler quilt UFO’s. Only one left from 20 or more years ago. Soon I will work on newer stuff.

  8. Marsha in Michigan

Oh, my. It’s 47 and was 51 earlier. It’s been raining and is supposed to freeze tonight here in SW Michigan. Ugh.

  9. Denise

There you are in snow, I’m waiting for a category 2, currently, cyclone.,(,like hurrican). Brisbane centre is about 35 kilometres from cosastline where “Alfred” is now expected to cross the coast late Friday rearly Saturday. I’m up high so not worried about storm surge or flooding but possible 155 kilometre winds.
Currently sun out, trees not moving, lots of blue sky. Hard to comprehend.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Denise -oh no! High winds are always scary – hope you don’t have damage! You’re in the calm before the storm now

  10. Sharon G NE IN

I love the wintry pictures! I’m so glad that your power came back on! It’s rough to be without power. The dogs looked happy to romp out there.

  11. Candy

If you have to have a snow day, it’s mandatory to have power! What else would you do but sew?! Hank seems to be a snow magnet … lots of snowballs! Nothing to do but let them melt. Does Hazel like the snow? Maybe she’s hiding from ‘the boys’.

  12. Kathy in western NY

You did get a whopper of a storm for not having much of severe winter weather till now. I don’t like it when snow covers my windows and I can’t see out. It looks like a wet heavy snow so please don’t try shoveling alot. No doubt it will warm up soon and melt but I am glad you finally have some moisture in the ground. We are so green from the rain and snow melt. And now large pools of water all over our yard. But I love the green grass! And 52 degrees. I’m boiling a ham bone for bean soup. Some ladies at church like when I hand them a little canning jar size of homemade soup and I’m happy they have a little meal.
We had errands to run this morning. Bank and then Lowe’s for a basket drawer for cleaning supplies to pull out under our sink, Wegmans for paper product stock up and Walmart for a return I’ve been putting off for awhile but the stores were empty. We walked up to cashiers in each and that surprised us no one was out shopping. Tonight is Ash Wednesday ecumenical service at our church for the community with 6 local churches participating together.

All I can thinks of is Brrrr! Glad you are all cozy & warm inside. Keeper is a good boy for letting Hank enjoy his chair. Boone would never have allowed a visiting dog on his chair. Of course, Jack Russells are not known for good manners.

  14. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

Whew. That photo is certainly different from yesterday’s! I am glad you have power back. We were out for 5 days in July one year. It was SOOO hot and humid. The next month we put in a generator and are happy we did. Cooling off here and very windy, but 51* now. The quilt with the black kitties is really neat. Thanks for the pattern name, Pamela. Hank and Keeper are so cute together! Stay warm, Mary.

  15. Holly Vogltance

We are in the same boat here in Buffalo Center!! Glad they called school off so I can just sit here and look at it blow.

I got an email with your post from yesterday, but of course could not find it on the web. LOVED the quilt with the cats and cat trees! Stay safe

  16. Carolyn Joan Rector of Ohio

Love that picture of Hank and Keeper snuggling in his chair/sofa. Keeper is such a great dog. You are lucky to have him. Glad he is happy with his pal, Hank.
Sorry about the storm. Looks quite frightening. Glad that your power has come back up. Great pictures of the storm. I guess that bad weather will be heading here.

  17. Paula in Kansas

Got your post – I’m just now reading it. Glad you are warm and electricity came back on. It is scary how dependent we are on it! Stay safe!

Your blog came through last night, but couldn’t reply. So far we just have high winds & the temps will drop through the day. A bit of rain last night. I’ve been trying to finish quilting a GM Flower garden quilt for a friend & I normally don’t use my sunroom in the winter, but was able to sew for most of the afternoon. The sun heats it to the point it’s cozy! This quilt top has been a challenge, way too much fullness! Stippling was just the way to go with this one! Quilting tools/gadgets: I find that many of my favorite quilting rulers are 6 x12, 6.5 x 24, 6″ sq, & 12.5 sq I use the most. I also love my Shape Cut ruler for cutting strips. Curved snips, I use those to “unsew” with as well, instead of a seam ripper. Love my wool pressing mat, & a good rotary cutter. I’m probably the only one that cuts my quilts pieces out by laying a cutting mat on my glass top stove! I have a small home & it’s the right height for me. My former home I had a 4’x6′ peninsula that was perfect for cutting. So we make do with what’s available!

I couldn’t comment last night on the blog but I could read it. Your wintry 🥶 weather looks beautiful but power outages are awful. We had a bad storm ⛈️ come through yesterday, lots of powerful winds and some 80 mph gusts 💨. Some big rigs 🚛 were turned over, buildings damaged and a tornado 🌪️ touched down in Irving. One of my solar gnomes was blown off and broken on patio and several limbs down. A lot of people still without power.
The black cats 🐈‍⬛ on cat trees quilt are “Mod Meow “ by Jedi quilt girl, on last post.

  20. Diana in Des Moines

Last year we installed a whole house generator. Mom was here at that time, and I worried about her. It has only kicked on a couple times, but so glad we have it.
I have 5 separate boxes with quilt blocks that need to put together. I don’t have the grands today, so going to tackle at least one of those boxes.
Not much snow here, but so windy! Roads are bad and I have no plans to go anywhere. Our church is still having Ash Weds services. I’ll watch online.
    Stay safe everyone!

  21. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Glad you have power but what a storm you are having. We are in our early spring weather these days, mid 50’s and rain, rain, rain. You are so right about relying on conveniences. We are lucky we have a gas stove so even if the power is out the stove top still works so I can make tea and coffee and cook. Take care today and keep warm.

    1. Jeanine from SE iowa

Teresa – Where are you located? I thought BC stood for British Columbia…..
      Jeanine

      1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

It is British Columbia, you are right, we are very close to the Washington border, about 45 min south of us is Blaine, WA. I should have put 50 Fahrenheit I was raised using imperial measurements and still think that way. Not sure if it was the temp that threw you off. Port Coquitlam is close to the mountains so we get a lot of rain, quite often more than Vancouver does.

      2. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Jeanine, I forgot to add our subdivision has underground wiring and yet our power goes off more than it did where we used to live. Don’t understand that.

  22. Bonny

We kept power here in my part of western Iowa but otherwise the scene is similar. Today I’m gathering strips for a Keeper Quilt. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery . My little dog was all business this morning! Get ‘er done! Haha.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Bonny – oh, good! I should make another Keeper quilt – fast and very satisfying

  23. Joy in NW Iowa

We are right on the western edge of the storm. Our schools are closed because of the icy roads and wind.
    The windchill is -5*

  24. Teresa in Indiana

Oh Mary! What nasty weather you have. I was able to see the pictures you posted last night, but the blog wasn’t up as usual. So glad it is working now. Hank looks like he had fun outside! Your barn is beautiful in the snow!
We are in the 50’s here but dropping to the 30s throughout the day with possible snow tonight. Is this winters last hurrah? Stay safe & warm. Thankful you have power.

  25. Linda K

Your windows look like mine! Can’t see out most of ours. Our power blinked lots last night but never went out completely, but I did light my oil lamp in case. We spent yesterday painting a bedroom and bath. Was a nice diversion but I have to put it back together today. Not going to clear snow until the wind dies down some. I’m glad some businesses are closed to keep people home. Maybe I can see later this afternoon or after snow is somewhat cleared. Stay safe.

  26. Erin

I’m so glad you don’t have to be out in that. It surely is beautiful, however!

My treadle is always ready if the power goes out. Of course, lighting with oil lamps doesn’t create the best lighting. Hubby did buy me lots of solar powered and other power sources for lights, and I’m so grateful for those. Not being able to sew would be my biggest gripe about the power being off. It was hard not to have water readily available when we had a well either. We like our conveniences!

  27. Brenda in Georgia

I have received this a short while ago, I think. I am just now checking my email since earlier this morning. So glad you are okay. It looks like a winter wonderland there, with all that implies, I guess. I was wondering what kind of creature is that with all the white spots and then realized that must be Hank with snow all over him. I agree, we are all so used to our modern conveniences that it feels like a disaster without them! Stay warm and enjoy all those fur babies. I am assuming the chickens are okay? The storm blew through here overnight and the news reports lots of power outages but I slept through it and don’t think it affected this area too much.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda – I just went to the barn – chickens are all good and I filled water buckets to last two days so we’re good there

      1. li

        Mary,
How often do you collect eggs? There is a real gold mine there. We just left the grocery store. It was strange to see all those shelves empty.

  28. Tina W in Oregon

Wow! And it’s supposed to be in the mid 50’s here in NE Oregon today. I’ve thought recently that it might be good to have a generator that could keep your home running in extreme weather events. I know people who have them and say they pay for themselves the first time used. Stay safe everyone!

  29. Joyce from NY

Got your post, wow you got quite the storm. We are getting rain this morning & supposed to be 50* Stay warm & quilt, quilt, quilt!!!
