The Games, 4-4-25

The women’s games tonight were quite boring actually and I expect UCONN to take it all on Sunday afternoon. I’m really disappointed that the games were so one sided. Just a year ago we were watching Caitlin and Iowa playing UCONN. Iowa won that game but lost in the championship game – bringing me to tears!

Hank visited yesterday – we’re always glad to see Hank!

Here are some great reader photos:

Here’s the quilt that Alice repaired – and the happy recipient!
Country Threads Split Squares – doesn’t this look like a new current pattern? Our pattern is copyrighted 1999. What’s old is new again!
I LOVE these cats!! (You knew I would!)
Vintage embroidery

I posted this picture just a couple days ago and have had several questions. My triangle squares finished at 2”, cut 2-7/8”. It’s a no brainer that you could make them any size you wanted – just cut them all the same. Or cut them bigger and trim. I hate trimming and almost refuse to do it. There are 25 triangle squares sewn 5×5 in each block. Sometimes simple is best.

I think the wider white sashing might also make this more attractive to all of us just because it’s a bit different than traditional.

Showed the embroidered cats to a friend, and she would like to stitch it for her granddaughter.

Do you have any info on it?

    Thank you.

I would use half square triangle piecing sheets to make the 25 patch quilt. It would be so much faster than cutting triangles. Tearing the paper off is a pain but the precision outweighs that. I tear paper off while ‘vegging’ in front of tv.

Using up the trimmings from larger blocks look so nice. Those blocks are pretty busy, so the wider sashing really gives the eyes a place to rest and enjoy the surroundings. It is a good way to not waste fabrics. Good work.

The cats are great. All the idea people get to make to put fabric together is so interesting. It puts all the little weird ideas that cross our minds, or maybe we’d loose our mind, or maybe we’ve already lost it. Any way it goes, it is a lot of fun. What would we do without it?

Hopefully the weather will calm down. Take care. Betty in Rapid City

Love all the quilts today, so pretty & colorful! Also love the embroidered kitties! That must have been fun to do! Mary, your Country Threads triangle quilt is lovely! I like the wider border, too. Oh & the gray kitties, how pretty! I have a friend who has a cat very similar. She takes him in a special backpack on her daily walks. He’s an indoor cat & loves his walks. Our weather here was been pretty volatile over the past week. Tornadoes touching down close by & lots & lots of rain! I’m very happy we live on top of the hill! All of our rivers & creeks are at flood stage. Yesterday I took 6 bags of clothing to Matthew 25 Ministries to be donated. Ron took 1 bag! Can’t get him moving on cleaning out his closets! Everyone have a good weekend.

Some wonderful quilts today and the repair of the keepsake sounds like a good finish. Im sure the owner was pleased to have it back and usable once more I managed to get my mending pile done and even put a new zipper in an old coat for a friend. Now I hope to get back to some miniature blocks I started with the Kathleen Tracy quilt along. Its been windy here so I haven’t been outside too much, my nose is not happy with everything turning green.

Eye candy great this morning with my coffee. I am home now and back from HI. Great trip. Saw an eructing volcano and visited 4 quilt/fabric stores! Lots of beach time. I am so wanting to sew! Cool and windy back here in IOWA. Hoping for a walk. Sandals ate put away at least for another month it appears so.

Fran – no matter how wonderful the trip is, it’s always nice to get home!

Everything old is new again seems to be the motto these days. I know I certainly was born in the wrong era. I love to cook, can veggies from my garden, make jams and jellies, quilt and bargain hunt. And my Quilting! Scrappy is back and I think here to stay as fabric prices continue to soar. Joann is gone for those looking for more reasonably priced fabric. Our small quilting group has a motto “shop local” Shop at home first, then outside purchase to fill in the gaps. I have a lovely quilt shop a few blocks from my house, but I’m sorry to say, I don’t buy much anymore.
Chilly and WINDY again today. Good thing I have quilts to finish so no need to go out till church tomorrow.
I see a nice big pot of stew for dinner.

You have the best readers who share their creations. Love all the embroidery and quilts. Wow Alice did have a job fixing that quilt. Thanks for sharing the picture after repairs . Barbara in MO sure has made some colorful quilts which catch your eye especially polka dots which is one of my favorites.
Mary is your split pattern raw edged too like Bulleyes or pieced?
Hank has quite the seat to ride around in. I’d love to be pulling up to a light and see him looking out next to me! I was behind a man recently in his truck and we stopped at a light and he reached over and petted something on the passenger side and up pops a beautiful collie dog to look out the back window. It brought a huge smile to my face knowing he must be a compassionate man.

Kathy, that quilt laid on my dining room table for several weeks until I could figure out what to do with it. Fortunately Corina gave me full reign on it! The lady on the left is her momma & I guess she never finishes anything from what I’m told! The quilt was hand pieced & I don’t hand piece, so the only thing for me to do was cut it down & it certainly wasn’t square! I added borders & stippled it to ease in the fullness! I stopped doing this type of work several yrs ago, but Corina was just widowed for the second time at 51 & I felt she needed something to bring her joy. It certainly did.

      1. Kathy in NY

Alice, how tragic to be a widower that young and twice. Good thing you provided some comfort to her with fixing the quilt. We can surely count our blessings thinking of Corina’s sadness once too many.

Kathy – Split Squares has quite a background story. Yes, it’s raw edged and yes, we trimmed out the fabric behind the squares on the first time around. And then, like the Bullseye, we washed it to ruffle up the raw edges. Lo and behold it literally fell apart in the process. Because these pieces were cut with the grain there was nothing to hold it together when we cut out the foundation. Bullseye being cut in circles was cut on the bias and it held together perfectly. So Connie went back to the drawing board, if you will, made Split Squares again and left the background intact.
I’ll bet that’s more info than you were expecting, isn’t it? Haha! There’s always a story behind every quilt.

      1. Kathy in NY

Well isn’t that interesting Mary! What a story for sure. I can just imagine your faces when you realized it fell apart. My Bulleyes is still our favorite quilt to cuddle with and to have made. I loved that process.

I loved the quilt parade. Beautiful. That embroidered cat quilt is really cute! I will be watching the Duke game tonight. Cooper Flagg is a small town boy from Maine right next door to the town I grew up in. I know some of his relatives. He comes from a great family. I think that people from Maine follow him much like you do with Caitlin Clark. Makes it fun!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Ginger – I love to hear details about the players! Yes, Cooper Flagg is a great player to follow. I hated when he got hurt and glad he’s back quickly. I will watch him tonight with greater interest knowing his small town background. He’s such a great player – like Caitlin!

Ginger – I feel very sorry for all the Duke players tonite – what a shock!

Love the embroidered cats! Brought a smile to my face. And the split squares quilt is stunning – colors are just up my alley! Looking forward to Hank pictures

The games were boring but I try not to do anything that takes a lot of concentration because if the tide turns then I sew something wrong. All the quilts are great eye candy & those wide sashings on the HST quilt do trick. The cat embroidery made me smile. Beautiful smoky gray kitty.

  12. Diane O

Great display of quilts today. Love the cat quilt, so much detail. Your triangle quilt is simple, but oh so eloquent!! The Split Squares quilt is awesome, love, love, love!! Is this a pattern you will be offering for sale? Thanks for sharing Mary!!

  13. Lynette in Orlando

Mary, I will say some of the boys games have been nail biters!!! I’ve been watching Florida play (my son is a Florida grad). Tonight’s game against Auburn will be the same I am sure. Gives me chest pains!!!!

Love the quilts! Barbara, you quilt with the polka dots 💝 – I just love polka dots! Who wouldn’t love those embroidered kitties??? Fantastic.

It’s been good sewing days here – we’ve already have days at 90….. too early to be that hot.

    Mary, enjoy your day.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynette – our wind chill yesterday morning was 27 degrees!! It got better but was never really warm – I’m so ready for warm weather although the days we’re having are what we have to consider spring weather. We’re all looking forward to summer!

  14. Cindy K

Great quilts today. The cats are so cute and the brights with black and white would be a good charity quilt for our guild as we donate childrens quilts to a safe house for women and children.
