The Storm, 1-5-24

We are not in the storm’s path but many of you are. Are you doing okay? Do you have power? Some of you probably have many inches of snow and some of you probably have ice. I dont envy any of you – we have escaped many storms in the last two years. Here’s what Mary Beth in the KC area is doing – binding quilts!!

This pig looks like it’s been cut from an antique quilt – many small triangle squares!
A few more stars made

I’m using vintage fabric that I have loved for years and this is my chance to see it in a quilt – many reds. Here’s one that been around for awhile and I still love it.

I have an appointment at Mayo tomorrow at 6:20 AM! I’m sure I’m not the only one who lives several hours away but I’m one who refuses to stay overnight unless absolutely necessary so I’ll be getting up about 3:30 am to get on the road by 4:15. Up until two hours ago I was going by myself but Rick’s good friend Mike has agreed to come here and spend the day with the dogs so that Rick can drive me. I fall asleep on a good day when I’m driving any distance. My last appointment is at 1:15.

With that said, wish me luck and I’ll be back tomorrow night.

    Mary…
Prayers for safe travels and nothing but good news from the doctor(s) tomorrow.🙏

    Good things,

So glad that Rick can be with you tomorrow. Prayers for a good outcome with your appointments. We have now snow here in middle Wisc but its been cold and the wind chill makes it feel even colder.

  3. Sara in Indiana

We have 5″ snow here in east central Indiana. Don’t have to go anywhere, thankfully. Even so, cars have been traveling our road with only a minimal amount of speed reduction, so it must not be too bad (we are on a county road, which would be one of the last roads plowed).
Can’t imagine having a doctor appointment so early! Looking forward to hearing how it went for you (good, I hope).

Safe travels, Mary! I hope you get good news. I love your red stars, and the repurposed quilt that was made into the pig is fantastic. I repurpose old quilts by making stockings and totes from them. I sell them at the craft show I do in the fall. We got about 2 inches of snow overnight in NE Indiana but our son and DIL live about 35 miles NE of Indy and they got 6 inches. My sister who lives near Wichita, KS got the ice and then snow with high winds. Hard telling the amount they got with the wind blowing everything. Crazy weather for sure!

  5. Beryl BC

Safe travels to you and Rick, and hope the appointment goes well.
We are near Dayton, OH. The snow has mostly quit. There is a small chance of mixed precipitation this afternoon. (I hope not.) According to the ruler I stuck into the snow in our yard, we got around 7 inches. That’s the most we’ve had in one snowfall in 4 – 5 years. Most everything in the area has closed for the day. We’ve been out and shoveled; it was a heavy snow, so it took a while.

    1. Martha W in WY

Beryl, I had to chuckle at myself. After your name you have BC. I thought you live in British Columbia. LOL. I,m glad you now said where you do live.

  6. Doris Gann

Praying for safe travels for you and great outcome! It is cold and we actually had a brief snow in north Alabama this early morning!

  7. Jan in AZ

Thank you Rick, for being able to take Mary to the appointment. Thank you Mike, for caring of the “fur children” so Rick could be the driver and support for Mary. What a big gap between appointments. I hope you and Rick are able to check out Glynner’s Pub recommendation. Maybe there’s a thrift store, nearby you can visit to pass some of the time away. Safe travels home.

Hi Jan. I’ve had two ablations. One about ten years ago for tachycardia and then one a year ago February for afib. They were two different types of ablation but accomplished the same thing. Go for it! It’s worth it to get your heart rhythm back in order. Currently, because I have no blockages, I don’t need to take any heart meds or blood thinners. Yay!

  8. Jan Hebert in MA

I can’t imagine having an appointment at 6:20 am, especially if I lived three hours away! But you do what you’ve got to do, right? Prayers that your appointment goes well and that your doctors are happy with your progress, Mary! My thoughts are with everyone in that path of this awful weather, I hate when there’s ice under the snow. So hard to see and easy to fall! I remember one winter when we had goats there was an ice storm and I had to slide down on my bum to feed and get them water! Getting back up to the house wasn’t fun either! I had an 8:15 appointment this morning with my cardiologist, my afib is apparently getting worse and I will be seeing an Electrophysiologist next month to discuss an ablation. Has anyone here experienced that? Would love to hear about it. Stay safe everyone! Jan in MA

Hi Jan. I’ve had two ablations. One about ten years ago for tachycardia and then one a year ago February for afib. They were two different types of ablation but did the same thing. Not too scary either if you trust your cardiologist. It’s worth it to get your heart rhythm back in order.

    2. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Hi Jan, my aunt who is 71 has had two ablations. She made a comment to the dr when she was going for the second one- I guess the first one didn’t work. And he said no, it did work but there is another part of the heart we need to do the ablation to as well. She told me she has never felt better- she said she felt better the next day. She could tell the difference. She can walk an hour a day now and feels fantastic. Go for it.

  9. Linda K

Prayers for a safe travel day and report from the doctors. winter medical appointments are the pits but at least it doesn’t mess up your summer and gives us a reason to quilt!

  10. Fran Dixon

Prayers for travel and for follow up surgery.

We got zip–nada–of snow from the snowstorm. Today we have sunshine and about 6 degrees.

  11. Gloria from CC

Safe travels to you and Rick today. I hope you have positive results from your doctors appointments.

  12. Erin

You get plenty of harsh weather where you are, so it must be a relief to evade this storm. I hope everyone in its path stays safe and warm.

I always so enjoy the pictures you share. It makes me feel connected to others.

  13. Donna Jo

Glad Rick is driving you. Safe travels and hope you have good news on your appointments. We had between 8-10” of snow on top of ice here in Kansas City. Never lost power but a lot of the highways are closed in Kansas. I sewed binding; cut out a new quilt and read. So glad we don’t have to get out.

  14. Kathy in western NY

We are 24 this morning with not much snow. Bands of snow coming across the Great Lakes here are hard to predict with the wind where they will give the most snow so I prepare for the worst and hope for the best. So far good and mid week another storm is due so I will grab some groceries today while weather is decent. We’ve had many mild winters last few years so this has taken getting used to what to avoid in this cold nasty weather.
You are recovering so well Mary that I’m sure you’ll get a glowing report. I am kinda chuckling to myself thinking about Hazel with Mike taking care of the house. I know how my dogs would be with a new person in THE chair that they snuggle into with me. One would say let me sit with you for the day and the other would hold it and never go out till I walked back in the door. Anyway I know you are in good hands with Rick driving you and Mike being home with the pets.

  15. Susan in VA

We’re in the storms’ path and getting mostly freezing rain with ice accumulation. It started as snow yesterday afternoon, but it was freezing rain most of the night. It’s a solid sheet of ice out there this morning! It’s supposed to continue most of the day and hopefully end as snow. As of right now, we have power, but it’s flickered a couple of times. I’m praying it stays on! This is our first winter here. At our other home in Northern Virginia we had a generator. Haven’t got one installed here yet. I don’t like the prospect of being without power! I love being comfortable! We do have a wood burning fireplace, so we will stay warm. Got to go let the dogs out. Don’t know how they’re going to like this ice! By the way, I’m at Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County, VA.
Be safe today Mary. Hope everything comes out great! Happy Rick could drive you.

  16. Rosalie in Texas

So glad that Rick is driving you.
25 here this morning and dry with wind blowing.
Wintery mix and maybe snow Thursday-Friday predicted.
I got a terrible case of pinkeye and plan t stay home all week. (Grandson had it over Christmas )
Wish I was sewing but have been working on the office and clearing lots of paper and filing some. Hope to finish that today.

  17. Viv in Idaho

Good Morning! Love your star blocks. I hope your follow up appointments all are good!

  18. Janet S

We talked to someone is Kansas last night. They got ice which made it near impossible to walk then snow on top of it. He fed the cows enough, so he won’t have to go out for a couple days.
Along with everyone else, I am super afraid of falling asleep at the wheel. Years ago, I would pull over and have hubby drive, but he has macular degeneration, so I do it all. Any time we are traveling more than 2 or 3 hours; I pack a suitcase to be sure we can stop on our journey. Mary, you are doing so much already after your surgery, I bet you will get a super star rating from your doctor. Thoughts and prayers will be with you. Last night’s football game was a disaster but then again, I’m a Viking fan. Detroit must have read our playbook and did exceptional job – darn.
Prayers to everyone in the storm path.

    1. Sunflower 🌻 from Michigan

      Janet,
Sorry about the Vikings loss, but I’m happy for our Lions. Did you hear or see what Detroit coach, Dan Campbell ,said to the Vikings coach when they shook hands after the game? According to our sports guy here, he said, see you back here in two weeks. So, he’s confident the Vikings will win next week so that should lift your team. 🌻

  19. Jeanie S, Central IL

Good luck with your appointments and safe travels.
Lots of snow was predicted for us in the Peoria IL area this weekend, but we only have had 3 to 4 inches. Southern IL had ice and snow.
Take Care, Mary & Rick 🥰

  20. Barbara (in MO)

Mary Beth has the right idea, when its bad weather stay inside and quilt! I’m sure the KC weather is much worse than we got in Southern Missouri where I live. Yesterday was freezing rain all day and after dark we got a dusting of snow. Schools are closed and we don’t have to go anywhere so I’ll be sewing too. Love the quilts, and that pile of blocks and strips looks like so much fun!
Best wishes for a good travel day and good report from Mayo!

  21. Elizabeth

    Hi Mary,
Please tell Mike thank you for all of us and safe travels for you and Rick. Good luck with all the appointments! We are all good here in Wisconsin, just crazy cold. My dogs don’t want to leave the nice warm couch.

  22. Sandy

Hi Mary, safe travels, glad Rick is driving! Another damp day,and cold,l had 2 cardigans and long sleeve t-shirt on,then got the heater out,so much for summer, now in bed with winter nightie on!Crazy weather everywhere! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy p.s.love the pig!

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janet S – in case Sandy doesn’t see your question, she lives in New Zealand where they’re having summer now.

  23. Mary Hanson

How did it ever end when the head nurse told you in the hospital to take your meds or you weren’t going to like the consequences? Good luck tomorrow!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Mary – I reported it but have never heard a word from anyone. But it remains the worst 9 days of my life

  24. Alice in SW OH

So glad Rick will drive you to your appt! I know if I had to get up that early I wouldn’t sleep for fear I would oversleep! Hope your Dr is happy with your progress! Here in SW Ohio it’s still snowing. We have approximately 6″ on the ground. During the night we’re supposed to get sleet & expect another 5-6″ of snow on top of the ice! It’s rare we have this much snow in a winter. Our winters have been rather mild. Yesterday I drove to church as I have 4 wheel drive & it was pretty slick coming home at noon. Ron & I attend church together & he usually drives. Friday we made our grocery run & I took him to get lab work done for an upcoming Dr appt. No power outages here. All our lines are underground so we seldom lose power. All schools are closed & most businesses. So I will stay put, no need to go anyplace! Safe travels, Mary!

  25. Sue Smith in OR

I do wish you luck, Mary. Lots and lots of it. Wishing you a great news day and a safe day.

  26. Gloria b.

Sending wishes for safe drives (both ways) and a good health report. I think I have that fabric too.

  27. Martha W in WY

You should have good roads tomorrow because you escaped this last storm. I’m glad Rick can drive you. I’ve driven thousands of miles over the years. Only once did I nod off while behind the wheel. It was when I hadn’t slept within 24 hours and was completing a 12 hour drive. Then about 8 miles from home I fell asleep and hit the guard rail on the left. It did major damage on the drivers side of my car. I sure was lucky and learned my lesson. Now, I don’t drive if I haven’t slept the night before. HD usually drives on our trips that we take together. That’s when I read aloud to him!

  28. Jamie in AZ

OMG That PIG IS FABULOUS. I think if I lived closer to whoever made It I would become a cat burglar!

Please tell Mike we all appreciate him protecting our Queen. I will be checking often tomorrow to hear that everything is good.

  29. Li

Safe travels for you and Rick. That storm dropped extremely wet snow. No wonder everyone is experiencing problems with ice on the roads. Helpless and so dangerous. Maybe you can choose to stay overnight after the appointment(s) if the road conditions are questionable.

  30. Joy in NW Iowa

Mary I wish you the best! Too bad we couldn’t have had the same day for appointments! Jays checkup is Friday starting at 7:30 and last appointment is 2:30. We are about 4 hours from Rochester so we do stay overnight.
We are about 5* right now at 10:30 p.m. and tomorrow I am going to try to stay in! 😉.
I agree you are Mary the Queen! Too cute! We all love you! So did Tim the tomcat hang around during the cold snap? Today our cats all came out of the shed and layed in the sun out of the wind. Their black fur soaks up the sun!
Well, it is 10:30 p.m. and I’ll turn into a pumpkin soon. So good night! I’ll be thinking about you tomorrow and praying for a good report!

  31. Elizabeth P McDonald

Mary, so glad that Rick can drive you to Mayo; falling asleep and driving are a bad combination! I had that problem on our move from the Catskill Mts. to N. Florida, and I got my poor partner so nervous that we stopped at a rest stop for “coffee” and he took over for the whole 1300 miles. We were traveling down with our 2 elderly cats in the back seat, and had to do the trip at a slower pace. Good luck with all of your appointments! I will be thinking of you all day and sending Good Thoughts.

  32. Sandt

Good luck with the follow up appointment. It will be a very early start to the day. I am glad Rick is driving you. Have you been to Glynner’s Pub in Rochester? Great lunch spot with several kinds of “iced tea”. Try it for lunch if you can!

  33. Shirley Andersen Smith

Here is to good thoughts and continued goid health Mary.
    Safe drive to and from.
