The Storm Pattern, 11-7-25

The Storm has 6 pages so it won’t fit in a SASE. I think you’ll have to send $10 and I’ll provide the larger envelope. I have no idea what postage is but if you want to order the pattern, send $10.00 and an address label.

I’ve been working on these blocks for months – slowly -at the beginning it took me an entire evening to sew one block. I do not know the name of the block and don’t have time to search. I’m going to call the quilt Civil War Modern. The pattern will have the block with rotary sizes to cut and a piecing diagram.

I paired Civil War fabrics with modern day fabrics – each block has 5 different fabrics plus a neutral background fabric. A scant 1/4” seam allowance is critical. This is not a beginner level block.

Civil War Modern

I’ve been on the go since 10 am – I’m ready to sit and sew some mindless log cabin blocks. Weather forecast is for a change plus precipitation this weekend.

The entire town of Garner was without internet the whole day! I tried everything I could think of to get online and finally called the company – yup, I was one of many. The technician came here about 4 pm – someone had to go to every home to do a hard reset – yikes.

Your new quilt Civil War Modern is beautiful. I love your fabric choices. It is storming here with wind and rain and it woke me up so I thought I’d catch up on the blogs I enjoy. Happy Sunday.

Really like your Civil War modern. I have a lot of civil war fabrics and am working on a lap size quilt that is all 3” blocks finished. I’m crazy , I know, but I really like it. Isn’t that why we quilt-because it makes us happy.

Oh how I love your Civil War Modern quilt. You have such an eye for color combinations. Just beautiful!

I love your quilt Civil War Modern, it will be beautiful once quilted! It inspires me to finish one similar that was in one of your books. I have five blocks finished so far, so many to go! It won’t be as perfectly pieced as yours but that’s ok with me! I’ve used some modern fabrics in mine as well. It’s been pretty stressful around here, my husband’s eye, the one with glaucoma, is inflamed and he’s been going to many drs appointments. Just hope they can get that under control. A good thing is that my brother had a double bypass surgery last Thursday which involved opening his chest. We visited on Saturday expecting him to be in rough condition and to our surprise he actually walked out to the visiting room area to visit! Today he went for a little walk outside for the first time since. I told him he’s my hero! Going outside to enjoy this beautiful day,

The new quilt you are working on, Civil War Modern, is lovely. The piecing does look very complicated. You have such a talent for choosing colors and fabrics to make the quilt so beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I need to do a lot of cleaning today, having trouble getting motivated to get up and start.

A crass young man sent off a postcard to his ex-girlfriend: “Weather is here, wish you were beautiful.” After having a think about this, she returned said postcard with punctuation rearranged: “Weather is here. Wish you were, Beautiful.” And YES, punctuation is everything!!!🤣

PS LOVE LOVE LOVE modern Civil War😊

I love Civil War Modern too. Your blocks in it are beautiful. Can’t wait for you to show it when it’s finished. I would love to try making a block, and maybe it would grow into lots more. Right now, though, I am tending towards little things so that I will actually finish them. I have a horrid tendency to stop about 3/4s of the way through a project. Why is that!?! The weather here on the Oregon coast is mild. I actually picked 3 small cucumbers yesterday. I went out to pull the plant and found them nestled in the vines. There are a couple more tiny ones, so I left it in hopes they will get bigger. The name of the cuc is Bragger. The one plant has given us an unbelievable amount of cucumbers, and they are very tasty.

Sue in OR – I usually quit about then because I’m sick of the project and want to do something else.mmi get bored easily. Haha!!

I love the Civil War Modern quilt. You are always ambitious ! A real Master Quilter. I always love to see what you come up with.
The Storm Quilt is also beautiful. Missed it yesterday. I
Our weather is getting cold. Made potato soup last night. Funny, I just don’t make it often enough. Was delicious with a new recipe from Allrecipes. I was glad to have it ready for my granddaughter when she came home.
I was hoping to watch the Ohio State football game today, but I don’t think it will be on any station I get. Might just have to listen to the game on the radio.

I love your Civil War Modern quilt. I’d love to give it a try but, if you think the block was challenging, it’s probably way beyond my skill set. Just love the colors you chose. Just beautiful!
In the 20’s this morning. Snow predicted this weekend. I guess it’s November so, we did have a beautiful long fall weather span. I finished up a couple outside chores before winter weather sets in. Now I’m back to decluttering and getting rid of stuff. Unfortunately, I visited a couple of thrift stores this week to add to my collection. It’s was fun though.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Connie R – I want to know what you bought at the thrift store and what you collect!! Maybe that’s a question for our group – what so you collect? The block was challenging because of all those points that must meet the points in the next block.

      1. Connie R. In N. Wis

I purchased a vintage basket, a Williraye angel figure, a ceramic turkey and a professionally framed red and green Hawaiian quilt block for $5.95.
“What do you collect?” Would be a great question.
I always say I collect B’s : baskets, bowls, benches and wool blankets.

      2. Candy

I’m sure you’ll hear this from everyone here … I collect fabric and quilts… and dust (oh, that might be just me, lol!). Have a good weekend!

Your Civil War Modern quilt is beautiful. It looks too complicated for me right now. I always try to click the ads. One in this blog, the Self Employed one, would not disappear the first time around no matter how I placed my mouse. This time it was gone.
    Stay dry, Mary.

Love that new pattern. And I love how the fabrics blended. Never would have thought.

Rain and 35 here in Carson. We had clear skies the whole time I was in Arkansas. Beautifull weather. Woke up this morning to a definite weather change. It takes 2 days to drive to and from north of Little Rock. Stopped at Missouri Star yesterday. Glad to be home but miss being with daughter.

Can’t wait to dig into my sewing room again.

    1. Susan From AL

      Fran,
You so casually mention that you stopped at Missouri Star — that must have been an exciting stop! What new things did you see? What did you bring home with you? A visit there is still on my bucket list — maybe next Spring once the snow melts along the way…

Last year, when we drove out here to CO from Alabama, we were within about 20 minutes of stopping but dh was in too big of a hurry 🙁 I can’t complain too much though, because I did “encourage” him to stop in Paducah KY so I could visit the quilt museum there LOL

    2. Cynthia in Minnesota

Fran! I would love to do a road trip to Missouri Star…what are your fabrics you look at..from my understanding, there are at least 10 buildings of fabric types! Have you ever seen Jenny or her daughters when you have been there? I just wondered if they are around!

At Crystal Lake high school, I remember our English teacher giving us that statement, with the two punctuation examples. It showed the class the power of punctuation. I used it as an example when my sons were expanding their writing skills. Interesting to see it again. I am going to the Iowa football game today, raincoat and layers needed as it is to be cold and wet. Not my favorite type of weather when we are in the stadium. We pulled the last plants out of our garden yesterday, in prep for the colder nights that are forecasted. I have a pile of peppers sitting on my counter. My husband eats them like candy, so I won’t have to use many of them in cooking. I am incredibly tired of garden produce after a full season of picking and eating. In a month, I will wish I had fresh produce again. Laugh. Take care everyone.

I think I will always be drawn to civil war fabrics with the rich deep colors. Your quilt is wonderful and you did a beautiful job with colors and piecing.

We are expecting snow this weekend, they keep saying a dusting is expected, but the news keeps showing salt and plow trucks ready to hit the roads. Wrecker drivers are warming up too because a lot of people forget how to drive on bad roads from year to year, especially men in big pickup trucks! So far it’s quiet this morning and I don’t see any snow clouds yet!

Blessings to everyone. Love your grammer lesson today – the punctuation on the women’s saying is so right on!

    Love the Civil War Modern!
Monday morning is predicted to be 11* for the low! Brrrr. And then Tuesday 51* for a high!! Yo-yo weather!

  15. Jean

Civil war modern is beautiful! Your piecing skills are remarkable. The block you showed looks perfect. Kinda makes me wish I hadn’t of donated my civil war fabric.

  16. Alice in SW OH

Love your block & quilt. Very pretty with the Civil war & modern fabrics. I can see why that block takes a bit of time! It’s been a busy week here. 5-6 wks ago I had a local company come to measure for blinds in my sunroom/sewing room. Installation day was Thurs. I spent Tues & Wed washing windows & pulling out the shelving units & other storage. Just doing a thorough cleaning. All went well except the 2 corner blinds. They didn’t measure correctly & these blinds can’t be cut down 4″. So I must wait another 5-6 wks for the new blinds! It looks really strange & I’ve already had a neighbor wonder why I would only put blinds on the 2 inside windows & leave the others bare! Since our weather is turning bad, I’m hoping to get my garage organized on Sat. I bought another large shelving unit to organize the tubs, & other things. Fri a group of 20 ladies from our church traveled to a dinner theatre to watch “Scrooge a Musical”. We all enjoyed the musical & of course the food was wonderful, too! It appears winter is on its way & I’m not looking forward to that at all. We may have a bit of snow by Mon!

    1. Cynthia in Minnesota

Alice, if the blind company measured and ordered, they should be responsible to make things right, I bet they did, but then one has to wait for the new product. I get it. I measured my own windows but had to make a few phone calls to get the right mounting product for my particular window. I hung all my windows, and put in the bracket holders as well! It’s tough sometimes to be so independent, but that is the way I am.

      1. Cynthia in Minnesota

Whoops, I should have said I hung all my blinds! (The windows are already there…) ;^)

  17. Charlotte

I love Civil War Modern! Thank you for sharing it with us and I look forward to seeing more of it as you progress.

  18. Terry

Those are beautiful blocks! It’s going to be a gorgeous quilt. Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns has several names for the block: Crown of Thorns, Georgetown Circle, Georgetown Puzzle, Memory Wreath, and Memory Fruit. It’s block #2048. Civil War Modern is a fine name, too!

  19. Jo in Wyoming

That is a beautiful quilt. It reminds me of The Farmers Daughter.
We got the wind today 60 mph. It’s goina be cold till Tuesday.
