We took a ride around the area today to look at all the ponds, rivers and streams – all overflowing. Many fields will have big areas drowned out after yesterday’s 4” downpour.
I crept across the lawn today as I mowed so I didn’t dig up any sod – it was wet but it’s going to rain again this weekend. I hope to mow more tomorrow.
I watched The Fever tonight on my iPod in the porch – what a perfect evening because they won.
I’m trying to reach a reader named Sheila Valle from Wales, MA. I have a mixup in invoices and need to clear it up. If you’re reading, Sheila, could you contact me at maryehazel2020@gmail.com?
I’m going to once again print my pertinent information since I’ve had trouble with the bank. Please make note of my name as well.

Yes, you are purchasing patterns by Country Threads but if you make your check out to Country Threads, I can’t cash it or deposit it. Then I have to pay for another expensive stamp to send it back to you. Sigh.

Love this – I just have to start using this pattern!

P.S. sent an email to Jamie but no answer and still no news about Patti.

Wow that’s a lot of rain Mary. You look great in the corn field. The table runners are really nice too.
We are putting our house up for sale on Wednesday. We have found a two acre property set up very well for horses that we have put an offer on subject to sale. Let’s pray our house sells quickly. Our son and his family will move with us too and build a home to live in as soon as plans are approved. We are very excited.
I also detasseled corn when I was in high school. They bused us into a different county-probably so we wouldn’t escape-😂. It was a hot dirty job but the pay was good. I did that job for two summers.
Love the table topper and runner.
Cindy – I so wanted to detassel with my friends but I remember my dad saying if I wanted to work so bad, he’d find plenty of work for me! Yup, back in the early 60’s.
Both of the table toppers are super cute and it inspires me to do something more with my table top. Today was a perfect day to get some things done outside, no rain in site. We managed to get the Little Libraries up at our daughter’s home and the posts painted. We also buried 2 of our downspouts and have 2 more to go. Will be nice to not have to worry about them when mowing. My flowers look pitiful with all the rain for the last 10 days, not much blooming going on. I hope we hear from Jami and Patti, I’m worried about them both. More rain to come on Sunday, what a surprise.
I worry about Jamie and Patti too. Especially when both had their individual struggles when we last heard from them. Thanks for trying to get in touch.
You make a pretty model out there in the cornfield. Lovely quilts today.
I love the picture of you in Farmer Tim’s cornfield.
The table runner is great, but I especially like the table quilt with the bowl of patriotic goodies.
I think about Patti and Jamie often.
Thanks for this wonderful blog, Mary
I love the pix of you standing in the corn field and of course I love the table runner. I had to laugh at Jeanne in Colo, the “good old days” . Made me think about my younger years too. It’s hot here in Idaho with no rain in sight. I didn’t get to watch the Fever game, maybe another time. Be safe and careful everyone.
Great table runners and a bowl filled with patriotic items. Love it.
I often wonder about Sandy from New Zealand. She used to comment every day.
Going swimming today, packing for a trip, church and out to eat this evening. It will be a full, hot, sun-shiny day.
Is the fall table runner one of your patterns? Would love to have it. Loved the picture of you in your very patriotic apron in Tim’s cornfield. Thanks for mentioning Jaime and Patti. Pat in Iowa City
Good day Mary, I was curious what Tim’s corn looked like about this time last year. Blog post ‘Summer????? 6-30-24’ shows you standing in his field, and the corn is much taller. We have a cooler day today, with a high of 70. I am really going to enjoy it. I am a wimp when it comes to heat and humidity. The National Cherry Festival started here yesterday evening and it goes through next Saturday. Lots of people in town for it. The big draw this weekend is the airshows over the West Bay. We will be avoiding Traverse City if we can help it. Thank you for mentioning Jamie . . . hadn’t seen her comment in a while. Hope all is well with her. Janice, Traverse City area
Loved both table quilts in today’s post. The Patriotic one is perfect for summer. Is it one of your patterns Mary.? I would love to have the pattern. You looked so “American Girl” standing in the corn field with your flag apron!!! Loved it. We are getting rain….AGAIN…here in New Hampshire. Every Saturday and/or Sunday since mid March.
The pattern for the Patriotic topper is “Seaside Path”. It is a Red Crinoline Quilt pattern by Paula Barnes, #RCW111J with a copyright date of 2023.
I remember the news in Cedar Rapids. Pigs in the new every night!! And high school and college athletes were the news. I loved it.
Both of those table runners are unique. Friendship stars with Ohio Stars(that’s what I call it) look different and patriotic. And simplicity in the fall table runner. Very beautiful.
I watched the local news last night and some streets were flooded in Dayton! We’re north and missed the rain.
We (south west of Minneapolis) have been getting less than 2″ rain but it has happened three times, so the rivers and creeks are filling up. Our fields have damaged spots but so far we haven’t seen major flooding. I’m not sure but most of our fields have been tiled so that’s good.
After having my sewing machine serviced, it has been collecting dust. Yesterday, I got it out and was looking forward to some serious playing. Darn, it only sews in reverse! I know it’s only something plugged in backwards inside but I can’t fix it so it has to go back to the shop. It’s lucky I have another machine so life goes on. It’s going to be hotter than blazes today, so it will be nice being inside sewing. Have a good day everyone.
To Betty K., I remember detassling corn when I was a teenager in Iowa back in the 40s. We walked the corn fields, no riding was available. We pulled the tassels out from top of the stalks of corn, thereby keeping the seed corn pure. It was hard, hot work, from early morning until late afternoon, but it was one of the few ways to earn money so we could help pay for our clothes and school supplies in the fall. I remember the scratches on our arms from the leaves if we didn’t wear long sleeves. We did have fun singing at the top of our lungs and enjoyed the other teens who worked in our crew. When the workday was over, a lot of us would head to the municipal swimming pool, shower, and then Jump into the chlorinated water, which “burned like sin”, but it seemed to disinfect all those cuts and scratches. I think those days are often referred to as “The Good Old Days”. Lol. Jeanne in Colo.
Hi Mary,
what pattern is the rectangle table runner? I love it!
I want it!
Rose
Wow. I love the fall runner! And the corn field pictures are great.
FY I — Stamps are going up 5cents on July 13 — I think that was the date!! Now if they would get it together a deliver the mail better………
The beautiful corn. In Clarion, they detasseled the corn as it was used for seed corn, not feed. It is all done by machine now, I think. Many years it was done by girls standing on platforms cutting the tassels off. Our neighbor ran the crews. They were in the hot sun all day.
Last week we got 1 1/10″ rain over 2 days. Late this afternoon we got about 8 drops of rain on the window and the sidewalk didn’t get a drop.
In Wright County they grow the corn for feed. They have the BIG hog farms. They have the pork packing plant, They have the ethanol plant and the trucking company to move the hogs. They don’t waste much time moving things around.
There isn’t a lot of new in the summer in Iowa so one of the insurance companies had a contest to see who could grow the tallest corn. Wright County came in 2nd with corn 15′ tall. Another county over by Iowa City won with corn 17′ tall.
Isn’t Iowa exciting? Take care, everybody. This hot weather isn’t forever?
Betty in Rapid City
