Slow day. Molly came for the afternoon so we made two long trips through the grove to make her happy. Then I quilted this small quilt for a one year old adoptee’s first birthday part in December. Mom doesn’t read the blog so I can show you.

The farm fabric is dated 1992 in the selvage – I always loved it. I’ll bind it and show it again.

Tonight I’m watching the World Series again – it started out with two home runs!!! Anybody else watching?

This is how treacherous it is to drive into Garner – there’s about a 8-10” drop off each side of the road. Yikes – be very careful!

I like the farm fabric too and the other quilts. Now that we live in Maple a ridge we pay around 1.31 per litre for gas which is about 10-20 cents less per litre than we did living in Port Coquitlam. There are 3.78 litres in a us gallon so even if the exchange rate was at par we would be paying $4.95 per gallon. That pretty high but we are thrilled to pay so much less out here for gas than we did just 1/2 hour west from us. Gas at the Bellingham Costco is 3.46/gallon. Washington gas prices near the border are always higher than if we travel south of the Pacific Northwest.

I love-love-love watching { well, really, listening as I do handwork } to baseball, and I especially love the World Series! It’s been very exciting so far this year, and I’m really enjoying the Series, except for that 18-inning game …
One year, we had just arrived in Germany and were staying at a hotel while waiting for our housing to become available, and games would come on in essentially the middle of the night. I was sitting in the hallway of the hotel watching one of the games live on my iPad because the children were sleeping in the hotel room. One of the night workers must have seen me on the security cameras because he kept walking by, asking if I were well! 🙂
When the Super Bowl was played, in the middle of the night of course, the soldiers were all given the next day off from their work because all of the Americans were useless 🙂

Mary, love your farm quilt and the others also, the weather was really nice this afternoon. The sun is shining,
Jay’s eye exam one week after surgery went well. Then we went to Mexican and shared some shrimp taco dish, it is always yummy! Then we went to Costco because the gas tank was dinging, gas was $2.44. I think it’s interesting to see what gas is across the nation. I know we never fill in Illinois because it is always high there, and our trips are usually to Michigan and back. The forecast looks decent for the next week!
Mary, I love fluffy bun, but I sure did miss sweet Mortie! Mortie is such a beautiful kitty! I wish my black socks was tamer. She has the most perfect white bib and socks. She walks so prestige like she is royalty!
    Have a good night!

This World Series has been very interesting, not a blowout like some expected. Good for the Blue Jays. I’m happy for Daulton Varsho, a former Diamondback, to be in the series. The rookie pitcher last night – WOW – going 7 innings is almost unheard of these days. Although not a Dodgers fan I was happy to see Sandy Koufax, former Dodger, in the stands watching the game. He’s a favorite from my youth, regardless of his team.
The farm quilt is very cool – color palette, and simple, but effective quilt pattern. Mary, you inspire me again. 🙂
Cindy K. I also try to make an equal amount of charity quilts for boys as for girls. Some years I’m more successful at that than others. Mary’s farm quilt has given me another perspective on how to go about selecting material for future quilts.
I keep clicking the ads away so Mary gets this blog paid for, because I do enjoy the blog and the reader coments. Have a productive day all!

Jan – we enjoyed seeing Sandy Koufax, too. When he was playing in the 60’s our school put a tv on the stage in the gym so we could watch / can you imagine letting the kids do that today? Nobody was disruptive or caused any problems – we all watched!

      1. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

Mary we did the same in school for game 7 of the 1972 Canada / Russia hockey final. There was a tv in the classrooms and some in the gym. The school erupted when Canada won the game. Everyone still remembers that day annd how wonderful we could watch the entire game, and yes I doubt that could happen today in school.

No, I’m not watching the Series – I should be! I’ve been reading more when I have time and answering the phone and texts a lot – there’s SO much going in my environment at the moment!
I bought that farm fabric too – I made napkins out of mine, but I’ll bet there is still a bit left in my stash somewhere.
Love the Helda Witch cartoon and the other phots… fun!

  6. Cindy K

Have not been watching the World Series. Too many other things going on. I have a similar farm fabric. I’ve been using it up in guild donation quilts for the women and children’s safe house. Most of the members make girl quilts so I’ve been making quilts for boys the last few years.
Cute quilts today. Road construction is beyond annoying. The highway near us was redone a few years ago. Was a real pain to get to town but it’s sure nice now that it’s done.
I’ll see if this posts-have commented several times the last few days but nothing got posted. I unplugged my router to reset it. Think it’s working now.

  7. Ann in PA

That farmland fabric is wonderful and will make a perfect gift for a 1 year old. The reader quilts are lovely. Our gas prices are the lowest in a long time, even with the PA gas tax. Wow, that drop off on the way to Garner is scary. We keep to the right because of so many distracted drivers coming over the center line, so I’m glad we’re not driving there. Your leaves have more green than here in SE PA. Because of the drought, I didn’t think we’d have a colorful fall but it’s been quite pretty. Today we’re getting much needed rain. It’s pouring “cats & dogs” as my Grandmom would say. High winds are expected tomorrow so I guess that will take care of the colorful leaves. Fluffy Bun is adorable. Wow! What a great World Series! Our PA Phillies lost in the first round to the Dodgers so now we’re pulling for the underdog Blue Jays. Toronto’s rookie pitcher is from Boyertown, PA. He’s amazing, stayed so cool and collected for 7 innings and pitched a record-breaking game last night. Love those jokes at the end of your blog! ooxx

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Ann – wasn’t Tersavage fabulous – a rookie!!! Yes, he was very calm and collected. I love the World Series!! Remember when FluffyBun (she came with that name!) was feral? It took several years but now she’s a member of the household.

Good morning everyone, I love the witch runner, and would love the pattern. Not much happening here in Idaho. The weather is pleasant and cool. I do want to plant some garlic in the next couple days. Gas here is 3.19 and looks like it is rising. I’m off to do some shopping. I need an outfit for a wedding. Not that anyone will look at old people but I think yoga pants aren’t appropriate.HA, Have a great day

  9. Janice

Good day Mary, Regarding the road construction, it seems pretty late in the season to have the road ripped up like that. Are they adding a new lane on each side, and/or replacing sewers? Your gas prices are similar to ours. Love the farm fabric and your quilt. The mom will really enjoy looking at this quilt. We are on the downward side of peak color. It is a gorgeous fall this year. We have six maple trees on our property. They can get quite colorful but then I am always thinking about the clean up effort. This morning it is 30 degrees with a hard frost. Janice Traverse City area

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janice – I agree it’s late and I’m worried the weather will suddenly change and they won’t finish – once I get my van back I can drive on gravel so that will help – Red is part of the problem.

  10. Jeanine from SE iowa

We did not watch the game last night but happy to see that the Blue Jays won again. I am not a big baseball follower, but while growing up in Minnesota, we were very much Twins fans, and still like them but rarely get to see them on TV in southern Iowa. Therefore, I am hoping the Blue Jays win since they are in the American League, as the Twins are.
I made curtains for our daughter using that same fabric that you used in the quilt you showed us today. That was in the mid 90’s. She always loved the farm, and still does to this day.
Loved the picture of the cats in the car. Made my chuckle.
Gas in Oskaloosa is $2.44 a gallon. We like that!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanine – what great curtains!! This family lives on a farm and they have chosen farm as the theme – when I heard that I knew exactly what fabric I would use. We get the Twins games but since they’re so bad I haven’t watched.

  11. Ginger S in New Hampshire

Love the Witch table runner. Is it one of your patterns Mary?. I would love to make one. I have been watching the World Series. It has been great so far! I’m cheering for the Blue Jays.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Ginger – no, not our pattern but maybe Sue will see this and leave the answer in the comments.

      1. Ginger S in New Hampshire

I sure hope she does. I am searching to see what I can find. Sue can you help me out?

  12. Karen Cyr

I watched the series until the sixth inning. Looked like another bluejay win which it was. I’m all in on National cat day!, though that’s actually every day! Love the fabric. Reminds me of Grant Woods Stone City. My first quilting teacher had made an appliqué quilt of Stone City. I knew I was going to like her. Finally getting some rain here in Maryland. Our leaves turned early and pretty dull because it
Has been so dry. I’ve been trying to plant a few plants but so dry I’ve had to water a spot and then wait for the ground to soften. Hoping the rain helps a little. I have tulip bulbs to plant next week.

  13. Cindy Smith

Yes, I’m watching the World Series! Having no dogs in the fight, I am rooting for the Blue Jays and loving it! I considered them the underdogs mostly since they didn’t have a 700 million dollar player. I recently paid $2:48 per gallon for gas. I am currently cooking and looking after my daughter in Dallas who had hernia surgery Monday.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cindy – ah, hernia surgery – did it all go ok? She didn’t end up with hives, did she? The other day I lifted something without thinking so hope I didn’t create another hernia!!!

      1. Cindy Smith

Lord’s willing everything went okay. She’s in a lot of pain but no hives yet. You better be careful!

  14. Karen from California

We’ve been watching the World Series. That was crazy for the first 3 pitches tonight. Glad it didn’t go into extra innings again! We’re cheering for the Dodgers so disappointed with tonight’s game. Still keeping positive thoughts! Since others noticed your price of gas, I’ll share that we’re paying 2 dollars more here in Northern California. We’re wishing our prices would go down like others, but it’s only predicted to keep rising in California.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Karen – so gas is almost $5 a gallon? Oh my! I wouldn’t be going very far. Red has too big an engine to be good on gas mileage – fun but not practical.

  15. Ann D

We are SF Giants fans and are rooting for Toronto. It’s sad that we are rooting for an American League team. Go Blue Jays.

  16. Tina W - Oregon

As Sandy said – I have some really old fabric that I still love! (And some I don’t!). Your farm quilt is wonderful and the little witch runner is extra cute! It’s amazing how gas prices vary. We are paying at least a dollar more per gallon than you are – sigh. Have fun watching the game!

  17. Sandy

Hi Mary, l have used that fabric in a quilt! Maybe I can find it in the chest of quilts, some of them could do with an airing! What is this world cup?sports mad son hasn’t heard of it, the new Zealand rugby team, the all blacks, are playing in Chicago l think soon, and rugby league Oceania area is on at the moment, Tonga 🇹🇴 and Samoa 🇼🇸 flags flying off cars all round town! Does morty know it is world cat day?! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

I have been watching the game as I have baked and cleaned up. 8 loaves of pumpkin bread and about 12 dozen cookies. All to give to our neighbors and as thank you for jobs well done, mostly to our local firehouses. Our firemen/paramedics do amazing work with quick and professional response. I wrap and deliver, leaving goodies even if they are not “home”, out on a run.
I hope your road construction issue is resolved quickly. It is frustrating for drivers, but worker safety is high priority. I can see from your photo that your gas price looks like $2.89 a gallon and ours is pushing $4.
Would love an update on your chickens and geese/goslings.
That small farm quilt is so cute. I have found some of my fabrics with selvages from the 90’s and love them as much now as when they were newly purchased.
Thank you for your daily blog about nothing!

I like what you did with the farm fabric. Great birthday quilt. I have a few pieces like that if I could find them.
