We have been concerned about Telly all day – she hasn’t been herself and I know that terrible day is looming because she just celebrated her 12th birthday a few weeks ago. By this evening she went outside and walked around and she did eat supper so maybe she was just having a slow morning …. BECAUSE IT WAS RAINING! About 6 am it started raining heavily – after drifting off again I instantly jumped out of bed remembering that my sewing machine was in the porch!!!! And when I got downstairs it was blowing in the porch! Whew – I was just in time. And we got 1.6” of rain – wow! My garden along with every weed will pop right up.

I love these colors!

This is what I’m working on – I’m still finding things that need finishing.

Just strollin’ along

I admit after all the Barbara and Joyce quilts, I have lost my place in my photos. If any of these are repeats just know I’m starting over tomorrow – ha! Hazel is due for a hair trim tomorrow and Rick is going for his pre op appointment. Me you ask? – oh, I’ll just be keeping all the loose ends together!

Oh, sweet Telly!! Glad she perked up a bit by evening. I have been concerned about Akira these last several days. She is 13 and is slowing down a bunch. She never comes to the door when I come home anymore. Instead, I go looking for her. I am so afraid to find her gone. She does still walk with me each day—a little slower, but she will still walk a mile every day. They do not live nearly long enough.

Diane – Telly did perk up but every time I glance at her I check to see if she’s breathing. Big dogs seldom live as long as small dogs and I’m dreading the day we have to say good bye to Telly – as you will have to do with Akira, too. A mile walk is pretty good tho for a 13 year old! Use it or lose it as the saying goes.

I feel very fortunate that she is still willing to walk with me. She still has pep when she feels playful—or if I’m fixing her dinner!! I am just noticing she sleeps more and more and no longer gets up to greet me when I come home. All changes that point to aging.

You do a great job of keeping it all together.
Love the quilt show tonight and all the furries are precious.
I’ve had a cold with a horrible cough. It has really put me down. I have too much to do for this.
I learned today, the “good” cold medicine normally over the counter is kept behind the counter. If I didn’t feel so crappy, going to the store wouldn’t be so inconvenient. Sorry, I’m venting.

Beautiful quilts all ! Hope Telly is ok . I gathered fabrics for another paper pieced dog portrait . One f my daughter’s dogs . Several years ago they only had 3 and now there’s a fourth ! Blueberry 🫐. She’s a lab – wired haired Griffon mix . Like a long haired black lab 🙂

Chris – I just have to see Blueberry – I love all wire haired dogs!

Just love all the dog and cat photos!
And the quilts are so pretty!
Lots of rain but so glad you got your machine out of harms way.
Hope your Thursday is stress-free and Telly is up and about and feeling better.

I’m so glad you got some rain finally! We are so dry here on the farm in Michigan. We do have rain forecast for the weekend, but the forest fires keep popping up here and in Canada and we have smoke in the air every day. It even changes the color of the sun & the moon.

All the quilts are gorgeous, but I am loving those hand stitched/embroidered bird blocks! So unique and pretty.

  6. Kim from TN

Mary, you are the glue that binds it all together. Glad Rick is able to move forward with his surgery. Lovely quilts today, and it keeps me inspired to see what others are working on. Lucky you for getting some rain, we need it desperately in here in middle TN. I water most mornings to keep things alive. My miniature Zinnia are starting to bloom.

  7. Rita in Iowa

Love the pet pictures. We had a deer the night before wander thru and made a snack of cannas, beet tops, beans. No critters this morning. Neighbor had a coyote in the yard yesterday also.

You ladies are doing a wonderful job of making quilts. Mary send some rain to Eastern Iowa. It’s so dry.

  8. Carolyn from Ohio

O, I just love the embroidered bird quilt. Such detail makes it pop!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carolyn – these blocks are made by my friend Carrolyn in Washington state. I’ll ask her to tell us more – I do know it’s all been done by hand and awhile back I sent her a huge box of vintage linens to cut up. Such lovely blocks!

  9. Vicki Ibarra

Love the pictures of quilts and pets. I smile at the picture of JB and Three. Would that we could all be as content as they, enjoying the day. Hoping Telly has a better day today and that Rick’s pre-op appointment is smooth.

Hope Telly is improving. Our 14-year old beagle mix, Lady, has slowed down a lot, too. She doesn’t hear well or see quite as well as she once did, but she sure perks up if there’s food or a treat being offered! But, every now and then she won’t eat her food right away. But, eventually she does. I know the feeling of checking to see if they’re still breathing — she sleeps a lot! Happy to hear you got rain and glad you saved your sewing machine! The air quality here in Northern Virginia was bad yesterday and worst today from the Canadian wild fires. They say to stay inside. Included in that are elderly people — that doesn’t mean me, I don’t think!!! LOL!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan Boyd – we see the smoke on the news and have a hard time imagining what it must be like. Keep Lady close.

  11. Suzanne

Glad you got some rain AND got the sewing machine inside quickly! I enjoy the pets and quilts photos so much. Thanks for sharing them.

From experience with Lucy, Anaplasmosis is a tick borne illness that first shows as lethargy, weakness, then unwillingness to walk, jump, eat and a fever develops. Requires timely medication to resolve as this will not resolve with time. I don’t recall that it has lasting effects like Lyme Disease can.

Wonderful quilts to admire from everyone. Especially interested in the embroidered bird blocks as they look intricate and wondering if they are assembled into a quilt now.
This wildfire smoke raised havoc on my breathing yesterday so had to stay in cause I kept coughing and cleaning throat. Today is much better. I never was a big campfire person in last 20 years. Must have sensitivity to it. How are people in Canada coping day after day? I like my usual blue skies.
I hope Telly perks up as Rick doesn’t need this on his mind going into surgery. They’ve been such good companions to each other.
We met up when camping with some friends up here from FL for the summer for a fun visit at the campground they stay at. Here’s a neat story….we went with them 18 years ago when they brought their terrier pup home. They lost him last fall so he lived a long life. I am so happy to say they adopted this week their granddaughters cockapoo mix dog as she fell on hard times and couldn’t afford food and care and the poor dog was left with her from a relative who no longer could care for the dog either. So now our friends will give it a stable loving home. Best part is the dog is 10 years old and our friends are in their early 80’s and know they will have a fun life together for however long each of them lives. We got to shower her with love and get to know our 2 dogs. It was the highlight of my camping trip. I can’t wait to see them again.

Kathy – it’s a perfect solution! Old people should adopt old dogs and won’t that lucky little dog live a happy life? They came to a great solution, didn’t they?

      1. Kathy

I agree Mary that a great solution came for this poor dog being passed around in her older age. Now she can feel safe and this couple will spoil her. It gave them a new meaning to their days which they were excited to get back into which tells me they missed their former dog so much. When theirs a will, theirs a way!

So sorry Telly isn’t feeling well. It’s hard to watch aging pets. I LOVE the double-decker kitty pix—all the critters are so sweet.
Glad you got rain! We’re supposed to get 1” plus on Sunday . We were in Madison, Wisconsin over the weekend, helping our son move from Indianapolis. He just graduated from medical school and will be living there for 4 years, doing his residency. It was beautiful, but we were getting wildfire smoke, and now we have an air quality alert here in central Indiana. Need to work in the yard but I guess it will have to wait until this evening. Slowly redoing yard from last year’s tree/new fence damage.

Love the quilt with the machine-stitched birds on the old linens with kantha stitching! So creative!

I read through all of the comments and I also love the vintage linen “collage” style quilt. I’m hoping that the gifted maker would be so kind as to share a comment, technique, or reference where we could find some more information. I’d love to tackle something similar with my “stuff,”. I’ll check back….and thank you.

  17. Barbara Firesheets

Sure hope Telly is feeling better soon. You can’t help but worry when they get older. Great quilts!

  18. Cathie

Will keep Telly in my thoughts – such a sweet dog. Love the picture of the cats on and under the chair.

  19. Jeanne

I feel so bad for you with your pets. I will keep you all in my prayers.
Love the pictures of the quilts.
I need to get back to my sewing.
    Love reading your posts.
