That was what we woke up to this morning – very very cold! The barn is so well heated with the steel siding that I do not worry about my animals who live there.
Here’s a fun story from Marie. Last summer I mentioned that I thought the summer issue of American Patchwork and Quilting was really lacking. It struck a chord with Marie who got the issue and took on the cover quilt as a challenge and she did a great job. I love her version! It’s not better than the magazine’s quilt but it’s more to my preference. I love a challenge like this – maybe we could do something like this here in the blog? All make the same wall quilt?

Our schools weren’t even delayed this morning in the brutal cold – how can that be safe for kids on a school bus early in the morning?
On the coldest day of the year I had to wash out the garage refrigerator. It has to be clean and run 24 hours before Alliant picks it up and pays me $50. What was I thinking? $50? In this cold? Good grief – I didn’t really need $50 that bad. Sigh.
Made cheeseburger soup and went to PT.
INDIANA UNIVERSITY just won the national tournament!!!!! What a game! I am so happy for this team! If you’re a reader from Indiana congratulations! I hope you all watched this spectacular football game.

Appreciate the shout out to Hoosiers!! It’s a monumental effort. Good job to Miami as well. They made it a tough win!!
I love the idea of the quilt challenge. I hope I can find my magazine. I have a box full of leftover reproduction fabrics and HST’s to use up.
I just got back from a 4 day quilt retreat with 30 other quilters and half of them watched the Patriots football game. They were a noisy bunch. I live about 2 miles from where they play.
Yes, what a spectacular game! So happy for Indiana! I must say I like Marie’s fabric choices better than the cover quilt on the magazine. I had already put a stick note on that magazine to possibly make that quilt. Love the pattern! Very cold & windy here in SW Ohio yesterday & today. Today I sat up my travel sewing machine on my kitchen table. It’s just too cold to heat the sunroom which is where I normally sew. Working on my dirty dozen project & hope to have it finished before we leave on the 1st for FL. Have loved all the pictures of the cats. I was nice to see all of your kitties, Mary. I have to say I love the puppy with the blue eyes, just precious!! Stay safe everyone!
Alice – oh, that blue eyed Bentley is loved by his grandpa and grandma!
American Patchwork & Quilting was one of my favorites! I canceled when it came up for renewal because so many magazines were going digital and not fully refunding subscribers. It was getting thinner and at my age I have enough WIP to keep me busy. Wow, what a game last night. We’re Penn State fans – I went there, plus to of my children, my Son-in-law, and oldest granddaughter graduated from PSU! We were rooting for Indiana especially since Fernando Mendoza is a humble, talented young man. His diving touchdown was absolutely amazing! Tensions were high -sadly Miami’s QB left the field after the loss without removing his helmet and shaking hands with Indiana players. Mark Fletcher Jr. took a swing at a Hoosiers player (words were exchanged before the punch was thrown, so it’s not know what was said), However, Fletcher redeemed himself- he was the last Miami player to leave the field & patiently waited to congratulate Mendoza. Always nice to see good sportsmanship. We didn’t get a lot of snow, but roads were icy and horrible in PA last weekend. It was 4* this morning with more frigid temps and snow predicted later this week. Stay safe & warm everyone!
Either team could have won that game. I’m so happy for Indiana and the Big 10. Great game. Good sportsmanship shown by Indiana.
I like that quilt that your friend made. Great idea!!
My friend forgot to pick me up for Fiber Group. Hope she’s okay.
HOO HOO HOO HOOSIERS!!!!!! I watched the game last night and it was a nail biter, for sure! I have watched many football and basketball games over the years and I couldn’t be more proud for the team and the state of Indiana. It’s usually Purdue or Notre Dame getting the accolades. It was our turn last night. A perfect season in basketball in 1976 and 50 years later a perfect season for football.
We have cold weather here, too, but the wind chill is not quite as bitter as what you have. You can have it. and no need to share it with the rest of us. lol
I might be up to doing a wall quilt with the rest of your readers. Let us know!
I like the idea of a challenge – that could be fun! I’m in the mood to make a smallish quilt this winter… and have a couple to finish up as well.
It was 4 degrees here when I went to bed, but I don’t know what it bottomed out at. It is 11 degrees at 11 am; all our schools canceled classes today. It was so windy yesterday and none of us were out in the cold for long! I had my extended family here for MLK weekend – it’s a family tradition – some came in on Saturday night, the whole bunch of around 30 were here for Sunday, and then a few stayed over and left on Monday; I didn’t envy any of them loading their cars up yesterday as they prepared to drive home to places all over OH and to Buffalo NY!! We only have a couple of inches of snow, but the wind blew it around pretty well – the folks driving to Buffalo had some slow going as they got into the Lake Erie area. My time today will be spent running the vacuum and putting everything back to normal, including my sewing area. I had to pack up my sewing tables, machine, etc. to make room for air mattresses, but it’s a very small price to pay for enjoying all the family!! AND – it’s cold enough that no one expects me to go anywhere so I have a great excuse to stay home and sew…. 🙂
Chorus rehearsal was canceled due to the cold, so I did watch the entire game last night and did my share of yelling – what a game! While I’m disappointed that my beloved Buckeyes weren’t in the game, I (and all my Buckeye friends) was rooting for Indiana. Fernando’s run for a TD was great and I whooped for the interception at the end… and laughed when Cignetti finally cracked a big smile…
Gail – your big family weekend sounds like something I dreamed about before infertility – soooooo fun! I have watched that TD highlight several times – wasn’t it spectacular? Yes, the dogs thought something was wrong when I yelled.
Was 10 degrees here this morning when my dog & I went down to the barn to feed the barn cat. So pretty warm compared to where you are! We had family dinner and game night last night, we could see the game while we played games with the grandkids!! Glad Indiana won! I like your challenge idea of everyone making the same small wall hanging with different fabric.
Mary, I laughed at your comment about the dogs jumping up because of your cheering. My Dad was a rabid sports fan & when we watched games with him there was always a houseful of dogs there too. He was always yelling at the TV & all of the dogs would scramble up on high alert to see what was happening. Tom & I are both Penn State grads & they always show that amazing touchdown that led Indiana to victory. I love to see how different fabric choices make a quilt look so different. That was one of the things that I learned as a beginning quilter & why quilt classes teach so many valuable lessons. I believe that fabric choices really show a quilters personality. Yesterday I met with my quilt friends to spend the day sewing at our local Methodist church. Lots of sewing, laughing & eating. Now the bitter cold has arrived from the Midwest. Brrrr!
Des – our very loved football coach Matt Campbell just left for Penn State so now I’ll be following Penn State, too. With all these teams to watch I’ll get more sewing done, won’t I? I can keep track of the games at the same time.
It sounds like a fun challenge to all make the same quilt. It sounds like something I need.
My husband had a small bleeding bruise by his elbow which I put a bandaid on. When he pulled it off, he tore a huge patch of skin off also. It was bad enough that I told him we needed to go to the doctor, but being a man – no way. Finally last night after two days (and now it was supper time), we went to urgent care. What a great experience. We found out he can’t have any tape applied only wrapped with Ace bandages as his skin is too delicate. All’s well that ends well.
Other than that, with the cold and not wanting to be outside, I have been sorting and cleaning out the basement and the x-mas ornaments. Why oh why did I keep all this stuff.
Have a good day everyone and stay warm for now. It will get colder on Friday. Did you hear it snowed in Florida yesterday?
Janet – I did hear it snowed in Florida! The beach was white instead of sand!!
Remember “storm coats” of the 50’s? The total outfit consisted of the double-breasted, belted coat with a fur collar, a detachable hood with fur trim around the face and bibbed snow pants with straps under the foot. Then you added a very long scarf to wrap around your head and then tie around the lower part of your face and wrap the tails around your neck and tuck it into the coat itself. All you could see of a kid were eyes! Girls word dresses all the time, they were tucked into the snow pants. And then there were the really ugly beige colored heavy long stockings held up by a garter belt. Everything was made of natural fibers. I think I have a picture somewhere of me all bundled up. What a trip down memory lane! I think it would be fun to all make the same quilt, same size – a leader-ender project to our dirty dozen?
Linda – I have to admit I do not remember a storm coat. I do remember never wearing pants to school except under my dress. Mom always bought the pants to coordinate with my coat.
I did buy that issue as I liked the cover wallhanging but love Maria’s better. Her color choice is nicer. Actually I’ve been buying the magazine as there has been some scrap quilt ideas that I have liked.
We were feels like -8 this morning but sun is shining and no snow blowing yet. School is in session here but 30 minutes away from us is closed due to snow and road conditions with this wind are not good for buses to be on with the way people drive in such a hurry. I think back to storms years back where schools had to keep children inside and not able to get home. Can you imagine that with todays parents? We trusted school officials to feed and keep them safe but the world and attitudes have changed.
Yes, yesterday was so bitter! The wind just cut right through what ever you have on. I had to go to town to get some eggs and deliver some flannel for the mission project. So I went for coffee. Then my car needed gas. Ugh! Give us six months and we will be whining about the humidity and heat 😂
Joy – I had to get gas early this morning – good grief it was bitter cold.
Those wind chill temperatures are something! Watched the game last night too. It was exciting and happy that Indiana won. I would be interested in making a wall hanging! Stay warm.
I’m so proud of the IU team! Coach Cignetti said, “ Are there 8 number one draft picks on the team? Probably not, but on this team, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. Fernando Mendoza IS the number one draft pick—and he got exactly ONE college scholarship offer out of high school. The coach put this team together with guys that had talent, but none of whom were standouts where they were. Kudos to him for teaching them how to work together to achieve excellence.
I would like to make the same wall quilt as a challenge! Good idea!
So excited for the Indiana win! Our grandson is a freshman there, and took a little ribbing from his football loving friends at Ohio State when he chose Indiana. Ha! The whole year has been such fun to watch.
As Fighting Illini fans from Illinois, we were watching and cheering all the way for Indiana! What a season, what a coach and what a team. Lorenzo Mendoza is an inspiration for all young athletes – a Christian, a loving son, a magnetic personality and incredible talent. That touchdown where he flew over the goal line will be on highlight films forever. I had a $5 bet with my 10 year old grandson and I won ha ha.
Bonnie – wasn’t that touchdown spectacular? Yes, what a season!
I love Marie’s quilt and her color choices. I watched the game and was so glad IU won. That was a great game. My husband was from Ohio and always loved the Big Ten schools (except for Michigan). I am keeping up his tradition. I can’t imagine what a wind chill of -35 is like. Stay safe and warm.
As a Buckeye, I understand your husband’s feelings… LOL!
Can’t believe school wasn’t delayed or canceled with those temperatures. Marlie did a great job on that quilt. Can’t go wrong with cheddar and navy blue.
I did watch and was cheering for Indiana al the way! What a wonderful team and staff. When that young man intercepted the pass, I yelled and clapped! What a relief!!!!!! This is such a deserving team of this honor.
Burr🥶, Thats some kinda cold and wind!! Good thing Hazel sleeps with you..both of you can stay warm.
Today I has 2 delightful visitors. One a quilting friend and her clockmaster friend. He couldn’t fix my little granddaughter clock, but told me who to contact for repair. Loretta brought them many toys looking for all the attention. She got lots of attention from all of us.
Jo – I, too, yelled when he intercepted!!!! The dogs jumped up thinking something was wrong – haha!
Exciting game! We were rooting for Indiana! Big Ten all the way! I don’t think I’ve ever been in 35 below wind chill. Happy you all are safe and warm inside.
I’m from Ohio yelling my head off for Indiana to win! What a great season and the quality of their play and sportsmanship was outstanding tonight. Congratulations to IU and the Hoosiers!
It was an exciting game and season for Indiana, 16 wins no lost game. Mendoza’s parents look so proud and rightfully so.
Mary how do you stay warm in those temperatures?
Connie – I have warm clothes but I swear you get used to it. Tomorrow I’m going somewhere that I’ll have to walk about 5 blocks and that will be cold because I’ll be in dress clothes, not chore clothes.
Hoosiers! Bring home the national championship title!
Love idea of selecting a wall hanging quilt pattern for us to make with our own fabric choices.
What an awesome game!!! Love Mendoza and his family! What an inspiration! Cold here, too! Stay warm and safe.
