More Blowing Snow, 1-18-26

The sky clouded over, the snow came down and then the wind came up. Yup, visibility decreased – thank goodness we were all home and it didn’t matter.

Molly was here for a bit this afternoon.

When Bob picked her up mid afternoon the visibility was getting bad.

Meet my friend Kathy’s grand dog, a mini Bernedoodle, 15 months old weighing in at 24 pounds. It’s BENTLEY!

He’s got Paul Newman blue eyes!

And since a reader asked me to show all my cats and their names, I’ll do that. Feel free to jump right over this part.

In the barn:

Barney
Tim who lives here part time

And every cat arrived here via the cat distribution system. 😉

Take a look at this lovely coat made by Diana

I just took these pictures of the windows.

I might need that rope to get to the barn and back – ha! I am dreading going to the barn in a few minutes but the dogs have to pee so out we’ll go. I never do this without my phone in my pocket so don’t worry.

If you’re in an area of bad weather, be careful and stay safe.

The cat parade was lovely. I had forgotten about the same ones it seems a lot of us forgot about. I know how barn cats become house cats. The four we have are trying really hard to come in. Pawing at the door on a daily basis.
I just looked at the temperature, at 2:30pm it is 52F. I went outside and said to my son, wow it’s warm out, the sun was shining directly on me. In the shade it’s cool but nothing like what you are going through. I am ready to sew some binding on a quilt that will be handed in at our Feb meeting. It will be the Feb dirty dozen completed quilt, our meeting is Feb 6th. So I have a little time to get it done.
Mary, participating in the dirty dozen has really inspired me to get some of my quilts that are so close to being done, done. I want to say thank you! I had no drive to work in anything. I’m not usually a person that has more than one quilt in the go, right now I have four, tops all done, two layered and quilted and two that need the backing pieced so I can use up fabric from my stash. I also have another that I’ve made about 1/2 of th blocks. I believe they are 3” finished so it is slow. I will take it to the spring retreat I am going to in April. The dirty dozen has inspired me to make a list and start checking them off. Is it ok if I make an apron or two as part of my 12? I’m sure you won’t mind. Just getting things done.
Tomorrow my son and I will lay the laminate floor in the upper hallway and open office area I have. I can’t wait. Next week will be my sewing room. My knee can only handle one day a week of this type of work. But that’s ok. We are getting it done. I like jobs that are a once and done job, unlike housework that seems to be a daily thing. I will take a picture when it is done and th furniture moved back into place.
Stay safe in the cold and wind.

Teresa – of course, I don’t mind. Somebody said they were putting their taxes on the list! Ha!

Thank you for the cat census! I’d forgotten about Pammie and Deano. They must have arrived before I became a regular blog reader. I remember the origin stories of Three, Gracie, Greta, Fluffy, Tim, Barney and of course Mortie. And of Hazel and Keeper. How’s Millie doing? Did her dental work help her sniffles?

Daily life goes on here in coastal North Carolina. Our winter is mild, lows in the mid-20s, highs in the 40s, occasional rain. I’m awakened each morning by the sound of hammers; the three vacant lots next to my house got all their trees cut down, and are getting large two-story houses that nearly fill the lots. My kitty has lost his favorite morning sunny spot – that window now faces a high wall.

Dot – Millie’s appt is next Monday – I’m hoping for improvement for her!!

  3. Lynne from NJ

Enjoyed all the cat pictures. Nine out of eleven – I forgot Pammie and Deano. Did you ever figure out where Tim lives when he’s not at your place? It snowed most of the day yesterday but we only ended up with about 4 inches.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynne – no, I still haven’t found Tim’s second home. He came back this afternoon.

Well, they fired the coach of our Buffalo Bills today like I was thinking they might after the loss on Saturday . I still wonder what Josh Allen is going to do. He’s lying low at present time. The fans showed up when the Bills got back at 2:00am Sunday morning like they usually do. I noticed few of the Bills acknowledged the fans as they got off the plan so maybe they already knew what was about to happen to the coach. Big changes coming I guess.

So fun to see all of the cat photos. You have a lot of mouths to feed Mary. I love the quilted coat. A few gals in my guild have made quilted coats. I would like to make one but haven’t found a pattern yet. One gal just showed hers at a guild meeting a few months-she made it out of upholstery fabric and it was adorable.

Great to see all the cat pictures. Looks like Molly found her chair. Bailey is a beautiful dog. I wish I had a dog. Wonderful pictures of the quilts and love the jacket. Nice job of incorporating the uneven edges into the sleeves and bottom of the jacket.
Been working on a 10” pineapple block that was started many…. Years ago. Each block has 37 pieces. 29 blocks made so far. Staying warm till it time to go to Florida in a few weeks to stay with my sister. Stay safe with this frigid weather we are having.

Love seeing the pictures of your readers’ cats. It amazes me all the places they find to rest. FluffyBun on top of your sewing machine is my favorite. Thanks for capturing those moments. I don’t like this cold weather but I’m trying to make the most of my time indoors.

  8. Sue McG in SoCal

I love seeing all the animal photos that your readers have sent in. Thank you for posting the photos of all your precious kitties. Please tell me how Three got her name. (I am assuming that she is a girl.)
My last 7 fur babies have also come to me through the cat distribution system.
I am a long-time reader, but post infrequesntly. Thank you for being a bright spot in the start of my day.

  9. Carol in Texas

Mary, you have 9 indoor cats!!!!! We have 3 indoors and that’s plenty! We do have lots of outdoor cats. We live in the country so no one objects to ‘too many cats’!!!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carol – I have a big house with 2 dog doors which the cats find and just scoot in – they may have started out as barn cats but then they follow me to the house and there’s the welcome mat. Haha!!

We’re in for COLD weather. I am glad I don’t have to drive in blizzard conditions.
All your kitties are so cute. I forgot about Deano. Our Gus knocked down my 2’ Christmas tree again. I just may have to put it away. He also knocked down a plant in a coffee cup that broke. I don’t understand his need to knock things off the counters/tables!!
I am looking forward to the Indiana-Miami game tonight. Rooting for Indiana. Both teams beat Ohio State this year. 😞

  11. Hankster's Mom

When outside this morning moving snow, I thought of your term snirt. The snow isn’t black, but it definitely isn’t white either. Varieties of tan are in the snow color. SO MUCH WIND!!!!! I took The Hankster outside about 8:30 last night and without the yard light I don’t know if i could have found the house back. The wind was howling and of course Hank wanted to dilly dally around for his last pee of the day. I so feel pretty good recognizing about 75% of your cats. I was not able to come up with Mama Kitty, Mabel, Gracie and Greta.

    BTW: The Hankster is “2” !!!! 🙂

We just have had awful winds but I remind myself this is normal–it’s IOWA!

    Enjoyed the cat pics.

I have to admit I am off on another 4 day retreat tomorrow. Car never got unloaded. I will add to today. Nothing better than retreating for quilting and fun with my quilty friends. Another one right after this. Hope my energy doesn’t run out. No reason to stay home as no appointments. My birds are fine for a few days alone.

Stay safe Mary and readers too!

  13. Sheryl Harrison

I love all the cat pictures and Bently’s and Molly’s pictures too.
    Diana’s quilt jacket is beautiful!
We don’t have snow in south central Iowa but it was crazy windy last night. It’s 4 degrees and windy today. BRRRR!!!! I am staying in this week.

  14. Sue in Marion, IN

I love all the kitty pictures this morning! I tried to send pix of my cats a few days ago and they wouldn’t load. My iPad is at least 15 years old and I fear it may be going to electronics heaven ( or he’ll, I get REALLY bent out of shape when gadgets don’t work, mostly because I don’t know what to do about it)! I’ll try again.

We’re also in the deep freeze today—I plan to spend the day in my sewing room!

      1. Charlotte in No. California

I will be cheering for IU also. But the way my record went this weekend, maybe I should cheer for Miami. That way IU will win!!

  15. Kathy in western NY

Lovely pictures of quilts and the coat is darling! Very nice to see when garment making is few and far between today. But I wish we could have kitty photos every day to see as they are so heartwarming with their eyes and little paws. Keep sending them in. They sure make your blog post to me.
It’s a sewing day with the cold temps and I’m content to be inside. No where to go today. As Kelli stated happy as a clam. Nothin like Home Sweet Home.

  16. Kelli in N.E. Ohio

Loved seeing all your cats in one photo parade! I had forgotten about some! And Bentley is soooo cute! We are headed to single digits here and more snow. I’m as happy as a clam (i know, old saying 🤣) because I’m a winter gal. Have been like that since childhood- love the cold and snow. But unfortunately our Ohio weather has changed so much over the decades. Used to get cold and stay cold Nov- Mar and plenty of snow. Now its all over the place and much more mild. Oh well, I can’t change it, so just go with the flow! Happy Monday to all

  17. Bonnie in central IL

I enjoyed the kitty parade! And the quilted jacket was special. Enjoying my cup of tea and the quiet of early morning. Hope everyone has a wonderful day wherever you are.

  18. Denise

Hi, think there was an old movie called “cheaper by the dozen”, to which you might subscribe.? Wonderful photos, cats, dogs, jacket and quilt. I enjoyed them all. Keep safe and warm ladies.

  19. Sara in Indiana

Love your cats’ photos! Glad you are safe inside during those snowstorms. Hope the winds die down so you don’t need a rope to the barn. We have hardly any snow here, but the wind chills are terrible. Very thankful for furnaces —I can’t imagine how the pioneers survived with just a fireplace. Diana’s quilted coat is lovely—well done!

  20. Martha W in WY

I can relate to all the cold weather…after all I grew up in south central MN and now living in south east WY. However, right now I’m enjoying the Maui weather. 77 degrees right now at 5:30 pm. I’m relaxing, enjoying the beach, and getting lots of cross-stitching time in.
Stay warm everyone in the cold areas….

  21. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

I enjoyed seeing all of your kitties, sweeties everyone! Yes, Bentley has Paul Newman eyes. I would be tempted to call him Paul. Barney is so handsome and Miss Mortie looks like she’s gotten bigger 😻❤️!
