And the wind and cold is only going to get worse. We had dog friends here today because it’s going to be so cold for a few days that they will have to stay home. And tomorrow morning we’re having a dual birthday party – HANK will be one year old!! And Hazel turned 8 last week.
Remember the red quilt back from yesterday? Here’s the quilt – another Susan Winget panel. I’m going to get them all quilted now for next Christmas – I will display two at the care center and gift the other two.

This blog inspires me to keep working on projects that I’ve laid aside. I can’t wait to start my next big project.
The chickens enjoyed being outside again – tomorrow they stay inside.
Deb O – send me an email. I have a question for you.
Here’s Jamie’s address for those who asked:

A reader sent this very interesting chart about names for the moon.

I had more stuff, like the questions, for this post but the wind is blowing so hard I don’t want to walk across the yard to the quilt shop! Tomorrow.
Try to stay warm.
I just got this from a reader

Like I need another job – walking the roosters! Hahaha!!!! Pretty funny!

I trust everyone had a good time at Hazel and Hank’s party. What fun!
It is 21 and windy at 9P; our low is to be 1 tonight. It will be cold and windy tomorrow; I think we will bake cookies tomorrow.
I loved seeing the chicken video and hearing the rooster crow. Does he always jump up on something high to crow?
We can have chickens in our little town-5 hens, no roosters.
Your star quilt is beautiful!! Stay Warm, 🥰
The moon names were so interesting! And I love your Christmas quilt. I’m heading to Road to CA next week – really looking forward to it. After that we’re visiting our son near West Hollywood. He says the fires are mostly out – I’ve been praying for all affected.
Loved the Christmas horse panel! And Happy Birthday to Hank! The Artic cold is coming thru here tonight, hope you & all your animals stay safe & warm!
Those chickens with leashes, oh my, hilarious! Cute, too. Squeaky is in my lap while we watch KC vs Houston. CJ Stroud played for OSU! Buffalo Bills play tomorrow and OSU plays Monday. night. I am wondering how many kids will show up for school on Tuesday. We are going to have VERY cold weather Tuesday so maybe they will get a”‘cold day”!
Hi Mary, sitting outside, having morning coffee, another beautiful day! Listening to a pacific island church group si ging in the community centre about 10 houses up the street, and the little birds l feed are twittering away, great way to start the day! Happy birthday hank! At least you do t have to organize pony rides or party games Mary!Your Christmas panel is cute and l love the stars quilt, l have written a list of 5 quilts to finish and one baby quilt to make this year, how many will be finished? Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
To hear the roosters crowing. Love it. I’ve heard so many people complain about them, but personally, I’ve always liked those sounds. Especially when the young roosters are learning how to crow. It always made me giggle and laugh as it sounded like they were being strangled. Growing up is hard even in the animal kingdom!
The printed panels are so nice. Nobody could complain about the horse panel. They make great backs for kids quilts.
Yep, it is going to be cold the next 2 nights. The eskimos had their 3-dog nights. We know what they mean. Everybody just stay safe.
Our thoughts go out to the California fire victims. The immediate problems are so great, just to find a place for them to stay tonight, not to mention the coming weeks. Recovery is going to be beyond the imagination.
Hope the heifers are inside the barn or shed for calving?
To keep ourselves happy, pull out the fabric and start a new quilt. Helps take our minds off the nasty weather?
Take care. Betty in Rapid City
Betty – It’s so good to have you back commenting on Mary’s blog. We missed you when you were unable to comment for awhile. You are right about the roosters crowing, especially when they are learning to crow. I usually didn’t have any roosters, but believe it or not, one of our hens crowed. We could not believe it! Yes, it was a hen and she laid eggs. I don’t know if that has happened for anyone else with chickens or not. I had never hear of it before. I miss my chickens, but I didn’t enjoy having them in the bitter cold weather like we are having now. Mary’s are fortunate to have heat and light.
Everyone stay warm and stay safe if you go out in this cold weather. We will go to church tomorrow.
I miss the rooster’s crowing, too, Betty. Depending on where we were living, my mom always had chickens, either ‘short-term’ fryers for the freezer, or year-round egg layers. I do like me some freshly laid eggs for breakfast, too. Those were the good old days.
Thanks for yours and all the prayers being said for the SoCal fire situation.
Blessings, Mary and All,
Linda
Sounds like everyone is having some freezing weather…aren’t you glad we have quilts to bundle up in!!
It’s cold here too. Nine degrees and windy.
My husband and I are in Hawaii for a week. Heard it was in the 50’s back home but going to be below zero when we get back early Monday morning. I have thought of you as chickens are everywhere. Not in backyard pens but in the parks, on the streets -we hear roosters crowing from our balcony. So strange to hear them in Honolulu.
Dianne – this is not kind for you to write and say you’re in Hawaii! But you’ll get home in time to enjoy 30 below wind chill. How fun to see and hear chickens around everywhere – but how messy is it?
Loved the chicken video and hearing your voice, Mary! We don’t have the Arctic cold front yet, but we’re getting it tomorrow. We’re staying in the low 30’s today, but the temp is to drop gradually overnight and Sunday, then boom! Our potential windchill into Wednesday is -25. My DD in Duluth is forecast to have windchills as low as -44!! Yikes! I’m going to take the opportunity of the last of the “warm” weather to visit our no-kill animal shelter’s thrift store. They’re only open Wednesday-Saturday 10-2 as they are entirely volunteer-run. It’s a fantastic thrift store and is the main source of income to run the shelter. They closed for a couple weeks over the holidays and painted and rearranged the stuff. I have to go check it out today.
Happy birthday to darling Hazel and Hank!
Can’t believe Hank is one, seems like yesterday that we first met him. Happy Birthday Hankster!
Something about that leaf photo really speaks to me, I’ve gone back 4 times to look at it again . The rooster leashes are too funny. Last week I went to a Dr. appt and there’s a discount store close by. I checked it out while waiting for my ride back and found the perfect gift for a friend of mine. It’s a resin figurine, about 1 ft high, of a rooster wearing a cowboy hat and boots. An Arizona rooster.
Stay warm and safe everyone!
Mary, I laughed out loud when I saw your Chicken walking harnesses! Sent my daughter a picture of it, saying this is what her 8 year old daughter needs for her chickens – she responded right back that Santa gave Rylee the blue one for Christmas along with a duck diaper for her Coll duck, Ollie!!! It’s 12* here this morning, the wind blew like crazy all night! Hopefully, it will get warmer today before we get the Arctic temps tomorrow and Monday! Stay warm!
Christie – my young friend Reed had one a few years ago – I think he “showed” his chicken at the fair with the harness. Hilarious!! Duck diaper – haha!!! Try to stay warm.
Mary, I turned up the sound and let Jay hear the crowing of your rooster this morning! So special! Ryan and Heather had one that was really mean. Somehow they tricked him into going out of the henhouse and they would lock him out so they could gather eggs.
The roar of the wind has decreased. It was 4* when I got up. The sun will help!
The sleep in heavenly peace organization sounds like a very good project! I have pillowcase fabrics set as side for children! Hmmm!
I need to start working on a wedding card for our grandson and his fiancé. She would be disappointed if it wasn’t one of my homemade ones.
Thinking about making a pot of soup! We haven’t had vegetable beef soup for a long time!
Hang in there! Stay warm!
Joy – I love vegetable beef soup but I only really love it with cabbage and then Rick hates it so I don’t make it. My two roosters have always been good friends but lately Frizzle, the white one, is chasing Rocky. And I hate it. Now when they’re locked up I’ll really have to be aware.
My husband Tom watches all things sports, cars, motorcycles & other manly stuff. But every morning he says “Let’s see what Hazel is up to today”. He enjoys reading your blog about nothing with me. We love seeing the antics of Hazel, Keeper & Hank and don’t forget those chickens. Thank you for sharing your life with us & giving us a smile to start every day. By the way, your star quilt is knock your socks off stunning!
Des – thank you!!! My morning coffee would not be the same without reading your comments – I love hearing from you. Wish I could attach a picture here – Hazel is curled up in the chair and Keeper on the couch, I’m listening to the news and look, only looking outside. Hazel says “hi, Tom”. We, too, watch lots of sports. Last night I watched the first game of Unrivaled, the new 3 on 3 women’s basketball league. Not thrilled.
It’s a rainy day in central Alabama – good day for an inside job. I’ll be painting a built-in shelf unit inside a bedroom closet. KInd of boring but having new carpet installed soon so want to get it done now. I’ll have my radio on to keep me company.
Cold and windy here in NW NE with temps in the single digits. Busy calving heifers so I have a small quilt to sew on in between heifer checks. When are you going to start on your Dog Park quilt. I have a Cat Scratch quilt I need to start on. I hate the start of a quilt but once I’m into it I can’t put it down. Take care, Carol L
Mary love your panel, job well done. Cold morning in Eastern Iowa 19* and getting colder and windy. Finished 7 mats for my daughter to put between her new pans. Gathered all the materials to make 8 playing card holders. Will have grandson help to finish these and the will send them to his grandma that lives in Spencer, Iowa. Spent a little time cleaning my machine and cleaning the table it sits on. Cutting leftover scraps from a project just finished and putting a few fabrics away. Will need do some dusting in the house today. Too cold to go outside. Stay safe everyone.
I agree with your saying that this blog inspires you. I have had 18 blocks on the wall for too long a time. In the past couple of weeks I went through many stacks of fabrics to make ten more. I saw you quilting those tops and sewing all those sawtooth stars and something clicked to just sew. What is it about that “Rule of Five”? I look at a block and start cutting within five seconds before I get distracted by something else. So far it is working well.
Love the Susan Winget panel…. Great job! I have Lots of PHd’s…projects half done….our group makes a list of 12 PhD’s each year in Jan. We pick a number each month and you work on that PhD. If you don’t we put $$$ in envelope and at end of year donate it to a good cause. The money collected in 2024 will go to Sleep in Heavenly Peace….. an organization that builds beds and give them to children that have never slept in a bid. Groups also make quilts for those beds. Check out: shpbeds.org
Mary Ellen,
I’ve made dozens of pillowcases for our local Sleep in Heavenly peace organization. Our church also supports it under our Missions Umbrella. We had a work day in our church parking lot on a summer day where 40 men and women from community (not just church folks) sanded boards cut, stained them and constructed several beds. The best part was delivering them to their new homes and seeing the kids faces knowing they had a bed to sleep on that night with a pillow and sheets and a quilt or comforter. Those who never have lived that night after night of not having a bed to snuggle into would find it a very rewarding volunteer experience. Many couldn’t believe the need is real. It’s a wonderful agency and good for you ladies choosing to help them out.
Kathy – nice to hear about Sleep in Heavenly Peace.
Our group is getting involved in the Dawsonville GA chapter. A great organization nationwide!👍
I’ll check to see if SIHP has an organization close here too.
Volunteering is so rewarding.
