Windy and Cold, 5-16-25

Wow, you’d think it was October! Our temps are heading down to the mid 30’s early Sunday. The smaller pots are moving back inside. The big ones in the shop entry will be fine.

Another funeral in our church this morning – Vera hd a quick sense of humor and her only brother is a pastor who gave the message as well as told stories about growing up with her. He told family jokes, stories and anecdotes – it was the most fun funeral I’ve ever been to. I think Vera would have loved it!

Hank came for a play date this afternoon – we did one round on the trail and the wind was so terrible we called it good enough. Molly was here yesterday.

I’m watching WNBA tonight and these two have kept me company.

You’ve heard of fat cats, right? Here are mine.

Tanya T., I live about 20 minutes southwest of Houston. Yes, it has been super hot and dry. My son-in-law and I bought some rose bushes, an apple tree, and a tangerine tree/bush? at our favorite nursery today. My four year old granddaughter laid down on the cart and said it was too hot to sit up! Though she did perk up and petted the nursery goats! Guess lots of hand watering is in my future for these new plantings, unless rain arrives soon. Mary, so sad about JB. Hugs from a fellow cat lover.

Paula – I’m sitting here in a sweatshirt and wishing I could turn the furnace on! Where between us is the weather just right? Somebody let us all know!

I haven’t had much time in my sewing room. It has been a busy week and our kids are coming next week, plus I have a doctor appointment with my eye next Tuesday. I did get a couple charity quilts quilted this week.

Wasn’t that Fever/Sky game a fun one to watch? The Fever team is looking good with their new teammates. And Caitlin had a triple double! So exciting for her and her teammates.

Pretty disappointing to her. She didn’t meet up to her expectations.

A few years back a life long friend my husband had grown up with had died. He was a practical joker and always up to something. When the minister asked for memories, the man’s next door neighbor, a school principal, got up to speak. From there on the church was ROCKING with laughter. He captured the man, his love of life, love of dances, playing in a country dance band and all the jokes he had played thru the years. What a wonderful neighbor, friend and person. Always with a smile and laughter. That was a funeral to remember. Full of the joy of a man’s life.

Finally the wind let up last night. It had been blowing for 3 days. I think yesterday was the worst with 70 mph gusts. Today the sun is shining and we may have some showers, but the wind is a breeze. So, Iowa, there is hope. Going to church tomorrow will be a pleasure. It looked like the mail man was running down the sidewalk, and/or the wind was blowing him. Not nice. I stayed in the house.

My SIL asked if I’d make her a quilt for her twin bed. One of the 3 yard quilts will be perfect. It is in the works. The quilt shop that is very close to my house is going out of business and the police is going to use the building for a North Rapid Police Station. The building will be perfect for that, but we will all miss the fabric store. My house is already full of fabric, so I’m not buying a lot of the fabric.

Take care everybody. Betty in Rapid City

Betty – sounds like Vera’s funeral – I will always remember it as the most fun funeral I ever attended! Our winds only went to 50+ they say but honestly it was awful. Today is very chilly and the winds went to the NW which doesn’t reach our yard thankfully. I didn’t have any place I had to be today – the first day all week! I should look into those 3 yd quilts – could I do it with 6 half yards?

You have had lots of loss, lots of love, and lots
    of wind.💨

Now lots of cold for your plants. You take good care of them all.

Temperatures still in the double digits. We will take it. Triple digits coming soon.

Going out to dinner with friends after church tonight. Today doing laundry and talking on the phone or texting.

Could you bottle some of that cool air and send it to Texas? This week has set record highs!

Sweet Husband and I made a little road trip yesterday to a favorite thrift shop and quilt shops. The little grandsons will be happy with new shorts, shirts, and long pants for fall…spent $8 and got several of each. I found backing for a potato chip quilt (you know all scrappy and 1/2 by 2 1/2 pieces sewn together?) and some sale Christmas fabric. (It comes every year, right?) Now to get organized and not just look at it and touch it and smile…

A shout out to Jo in Wyoming…the woman who sits behind me in church lives about half the year in Texas and about half in Wyoming. She is the family cook and they met grown grandsons up there for skiing this spring. I think about you often when I enjoy hearing her stories.

Some very nice quilts over the last few days.
I can’t get over the size of your gardens, one would be plenty of work for me and you have three! Mary you must have boundless energy.
Sorry to learn that JB died, he looked like a nice cat. I’m sure another cat will find a home with you.
Seems the weather has been crazy all over and not the usual no matter what state you live in.

Death is so sad, it’s hard to find joy, but it is so rewarding and relieving to receive some during that time. I tell my friends to sit on the quilt they want at my funeral and if someone else beats them to it…fight. Trade, bargain, barder, whatever, but keep it friendly.

I haven’t bought any annual flowers yet because I was afraid it would get below freezing if I put them out. If your area is predicted to have temperatures in the 30’s, I’m sure we’ll have the same. After Labor Day is when we do our garden planting. So nice to see everything all green.
I’m still working on a quilt top that has given me some problems but, it’s coming out better than expected. I will send a picture when I get the top finished.

that is the sort of memorial service that was held for the man at a church community we were still fairly new at. He was the sort of person who greeted everyone that walked through the door as if they were the person he was there to see every time. The place was packed and his son (we did not know him) did a similar service to your friends. tissues flew about the sanctuary as much from laughter as sad crying.

Brenda – I think I’m going to watch the live feed again today, I loved it so much!!
