It truly was a day of rest – after church I mowed the ditch and a few other spots that got missed yesterday, spent some time with Donnie and Sarah and then went to the porch to watch WNBA….and promptly fell asleep.
Reader photos

Thanks, Gals, for another fun quilt show! Keep them coming!
By now I have finished reading all of Bob and Michele’s cards and I am so impressed by all of you who stepped up and took the time to send a card. And the sweet notes you wrote – a name would have signed the card but the notes were just the best.
I want to single out Karen Pidcock who, instead of sending a card to Bob, sent one to Marline! Haha! Isn’t that cute? She didn’t want her to feel left out while Bob was getting all the cards.
Like I said, keep your quilt photos coming – they are the heart and soul of this blog! We all love to look at quilts and who can travel to quilt shows anymore?
Thanks and good night!

I enjoyed the Red, White, and Blue quilt show. There are so many talented people. Country Living was mentioned on the blog a while ago. My sister just brought out the June-July issue. The cover is a trio of red, white, and blue quilts. There is a twelve-page article all about quilting and many pictures. I haven’t read it yet, but it looks interesting. We had a beautiful Memorial Day to remember those who gave so much to keep us free. Hope everyone has a good week to sit and sew.
Oh what wonderful patriotic quilts today! I’ve always loved the red, white and blue quilts. I have a couple I will send you. My sewing group at church makes patriotic wheelchair quilts for the vets. For the last 3 years I have been taking them to the VA hospital. Before that a church member was a chaplain at the Veteran’s Home in northern California in Yountville and he would deliver the quilts for us. But then he retired so we give them to the VA hospital.
Beautiful day here today but windy again. Just got back from the Memorial Day services at the local cemetery. Wonderful turnout to honor our veterans. Speeches, prayers, singing and music by our high school band. I live in a very small community but, everyone seems to o know the importance of Memorial Day.
I’m working on your Hometown USA quilt and hope to have it completed soon. I also have plans to paint a small barn quilt. First I need to get the garden planted. I did put in a few raspberry bushes to start a new patch but still need to get vegetable seeds planted. Busy time of year and bugs are already out in full force.
I’m loving all the patriotic quilts. For a long time, everything I made was patriotic. I was obsessed with anything red, white and blue. When we get home I’ll take pictures of my favorites.
We’ve been crazy busy with projects and yard work. The 10 x 16 building for my four feral cats will be delivered a week from today. I’ve already talked to my electrician about getting power to it. I’m hoping it works out for them. Their names are Boo, Christmas, Nikko and Oliver. They all came to us as feral cats and one.-by-one they’ve been neutered.
Happy Memorial Day everyone. God bless this country and the people in it.
Gloria – I’m so glad you’re going to send me some pictures of your wonderful quilts! And I can’t wait to see your cat building!
I will send pictures of the cat building when it’s finished. Looking at putting a split unit in for air conditioning and heat. Lots of ideas but nothing concrete.
The RWandB quilts are wonderful. I scrolled through them several times and each time found something new to admire. I love our quilt shows. Better than actually going to one, so thanks Mary, for making them happen.
I think we will actually get rain today. Lord knows we need it. We usually get tons of rain in March and April. This year hardly any and then May has been the same. I worry about wells going dry, especially ours.
Happy Memorial Day everyone.
I went to a large quilt show in Rochester NY a few weeks ago and it was difficult for me doing all the walking to see the 600+ quilts and visit the vendors but I wanted to keep going to enjoy it and my daughter took the day off to be with me. It was fun to see friends but the $15 admission kept some of my other friends away. I hope I’m still able to go again when it’s held again in 2 years. So I thank everyone who makes your blog so enjoyable with the quilt photos to admire and get ideas to create themselves.
I feel bad for the many local town parades here with the marchers having to deal with the rain which I’m sure isn’t good either for the instruments for the school bands. So costly if they are damaged. Somber day with rainy foggy weather.
When I retired 6 years ago, hubby and I decided we would truly make Sunday our day of rest. Things are still done like dinner, etc. but no hard work. Only things we like to do to honor God.
I pieced a baby quilt and Jim played around with his show car. We are preparing for car show season so he bought new tires and waxed the car. Work to some, but joy for him. Jim’s identical twin lives right across the street from us, so went over last evening for dinner. Yummy pulled pork, fruit salad, potato salad, pasta salad, baked beans and out niece made homemade raspberry ice cream with chocolate syrup! What a feast!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day and remembers those lost in wars. God Bless America!
Diana – I couldn’t agree more about Sunday – that’s how I was brought up. For all those 35 years we were in business M- S however Sunday became my day to work in the yard etc. Even then people would drive by and see me on the lawn mower and ask if they could shop. And I always let them.
What kind of car do you take to the car shows?
We have a 2002 Monte Carlo Pace Car driven at some race ( don’t know which one). Only has about 30,000 miles, never driven in snow or rain. I’ll send a photo.
I remember when we were kids, nothing was open in Des Moines on Sundays except HyVee. Lol
Great photos – more inspiration! I think a patriotic quilt should be on my to-do list – unfortunately, it will have to come after mowing, weeding, trimming, chorus stuff, etc. Sigh…….. but I’ll get there! 🙂
I’m hopeful that your good weather will get to us soon – after some great weather over the last couple of weeks, we had lots of rain over the last few days. Fortunately, a lot of the crops are in the ground, but it will take a couple of days for things to dry out enough to do more. BTW – you have me thinking about one of those little saws. My son has one and loves it, but he lives an hour away.
We have several rivers in our county and 2 flood control dams that keep the water back so it doesn’t flood the towns downstream – it will take a while before that water goes down. The backed-up water floods several rural roads in the flood plain. Unfortunately, we have some folks who don’t pay attention to the high water signs and have to be rescued. The running joke is that our Friday night fun is defined as going to the dam to see how high the water is in the flood pool… Ha!
Gail – buy the saw! You won’t regret it!!
All that water – oh my – in 1993 Iowa had floods but I’ve never experienced it since.
Outstanding show of patriotic quilts! Hard to pick a favorite.
I have one ready to quilt. Will see how it goes today if I can get it done. This week looks busy.
Take care Mary, don’t overdo with the yard work. Natural Vitamin D is the best!
Fran – on this holiday I’m just doing fun things!!
Love the Patriotic quilts so much! I never get tired of seeing them!
I can’t believe all the work you got done cleaning out the trailer, you had to be so very sore! And you got up the next morning to play the organ for church, Amazing!
Another rainy day here but we need it! Hope you rest today!
Carmen – amazingly I wasn’t sore! I wonder why. We had rain last night – today is beautiful but very windy. I was going to move my houseplants outside but am reconsidering.
Love looking at the quilts.
My mom and I designed the snowman quilt, for McCalls magazine. It was a long time ago!
Fun to see
Love the patriotic quilt show.
I just came in from our parade…no band! It’s drizzling out there and we have a regional school so the band does three parades. I guess they don’t March in the rain. The parade was about 5 minutes. Thankfully I live on the parade route.
Mary, I’m amazed at what you get done. I weed whacked Saturday for about 40 minutes and my arm is so sore. I don’t think I could do anymore so I’m thankful for the rain.
Suzanne – rainy days are a gift! Enjoy! High school bands don’t want to march in parades anymore. When I was a senior and rode in Band Festival in Mason City, there were over 100 bands! I guess kids just won’t participate now.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the quilts, what a beautiful display of patriotic quilts! Thank you all for sharing them!!🇺🇸 I just looked at all of them for the 4th time this morning, patriotic quilts are my favorite! Mary you really deserved that nap yesterday! Clearing out that trailer was really hard work, but it looks so nice now! Today’s Memorial Day & I’m fixing a typical Memorial Day meal for my favorite Marine. Grilled chicken, potato salad, baked beans, & Apple pie. All his favorites. July 2nd he will be 93! Today is the anniversary of our first date 5 yrs ago. Wishing you all a happy Memorial Day!🇺🇸
Alice – now that’s a menu I could love! He and I should celebrate together since mine is the 3rd. Happy Anniversary !!
I am lovin all the red , white and blue quilts. I went and bought a little saw like your. What a game changer I had so many things that needed trimmed. My husband passed 6 yrs ago so I lots my muscle man so this little saw has really come in handy! Love love the blog. Love all your stories. Love all your critters.
Becky
Becky – thank you! I’m so glad you got the saw – I should contact the company and be a spokesperson for them – haha. It’s one of my favorite tools.
Loving the quilt show! if I could figure out how to send pictures of mine I would join in, still working on it. Obviously operator error!
Sharon, I take a photo of the quilt on my phone and then email it to Mary from my phone. Hope this helps.
Sharon – let me help you – use your phone to take a picture, then hit that little arrow that indicates “send”. Enter my email address and voila! That’s it – please try it – see how much we all love the quilt shows?
The patriotic quilts are wonderful and inspiring. I don’t have any, so I guess I need to fix that.
Mary, I am so glad you took a nap; what a great thing to do on Sunday! 🥰
Another outstanding group of quilts. The R/W/B Jacob’s Ladder simply took my breath away!
Happy to hear you got a nap today, Mary. Hope you sleep well tonight also.
Wow, the scrappy quilt with stars, HSTs and the red border! Another quilt added to my wishlist of quilts to make.
Hi Mary,
I actually did send a card to Bob also but as I was address his envelope it crossed my mind that Marline should also receive a card. I’m happy to know that the cards arrived and were enjoyed.
I’m glad Mary that you had a restful day. That was quite a workout you had yesterday. But I bet you are pretty proud of that accomplishment!
Wonderful patriotic quilts, thanks for sharing, I am currently sewing one, w share when done..
I’m sitting here watching the radar and listening to some hailstones…..not a lot but also rain. Now no hail, thankfully. Threatening 60 mph winds. It’s dark and I can’t see the trees or hear the wind because of the rain on the room! Ugh! Farmers are the gamblers!
I’m glad you got rested up.
All the red white and blue are so pretty.
The threat of the worst weather is over. I’m headed to bed! 💤
Joy – you’re right – farming is the biggest gamble in the world!! People don’t give farmers enough credit for everything they do. Thanks for being a farmer!
