Red, white and blue lives forever in our quilts and what a perfect quilt show to post on Memorial Day 2026, our 250th anniversary year.

This is what my front room looks like tonight ….

Which means I spent the day moving plants outside. These plants have now become a burden! Some of them just have to go!!!! As I was reminded just recently, I’m not 55 anymore!

Good Night, My Friends! Keep sending me your quilt pictures!

Loved the quilt show! And the animals are so great to see too. Thanks for posting, Mary. 🌻
Learned something (again!) from the comments today! I always put my Burgoyne surrounded quilt on my bed from now until July 4th. 🙂 Loved the RW and B quilts! so many ideas! Spent Sunday ripping out invasive Yellow Flag Irises, 5 foot square bed of them. When I was 3/4 done my husband asked me why I wasn’t using the potato fork to pull up the tubers. Ha! I hate it when my husband is smarter than me! lol!
What a great display of Patriotic quilts! All of the quilts are beautiful. I especially like the first quilt with the houses and flags and the strip pieced quilt, so pretty. I have never seen a “bottle fence”, what a great idea! I’ve been saving blue wine bottles, now I have to find the green ones! Hmm, what wine comes in green bottles? I’ll have to find out. Hope everyone’s Memorial Day was great. Ours started off with rain but gradually it got really nice. Just not in time for the parades in the area, sadly. This week is going to be hot and then get cooler towards the weekend. Maybe I can start putting plants in the ground, not to mention seeds! Not sure there will be enough days for some of these seeds to mature. Jan in MA
Jan – I promised myself I would not plant any vegetable seeds and only one pot of nasturtiums this year. I hate watering them thru the hot hot summer. It’s all so tempting in the spring when temps are 60’s – haha!
One more request…does anyone know how to rid your garden of Queen Anne’s Lace or Bishop’s Weed?!? I have lost my mind trying to stay ahead of it. We were slack last fall, then we had a cold, wet spring and couldn’t really get into the garden beds BUT the WEED fared very well while we slept at the switch!!!
That bishop’s weed, oh dear. “Better Homes and Gardens” said it was a perennial. Boy. I’ll say.
“Dig up the underground rhizomes without leaving even the smallest piece behind.
“Manual removal of the plants is tedious and may need to be repeated until all of the plants are removed. They are also tough enough to survive several applications of harsh herbicides.”
“The best method of eradication is solarization: Cut back the plants and cover the bed with black plastic for a whole growing season to block out any sunlight and raise the temperature of the soil. ”
Dug up the biggest rhizome of what I call morning glory years ago. It was so deep it practically required an auger. I had wrapped and wrapped itself around that long pipe near the water turn on/off valve.
That was before I was age “55”.
Li – oh, those horrendous weeds that grow no matter what. Sounds like you’ve had some experience with them. Ha!
Your blog this morning has filled up my senses…so many feelings about the patriotic quilts and the memory of Memorial Day as a child. Parade, marching bands, placing flowers at the cemetery and our family picnic with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. What a wonderful experience that most children today never get to see…thank you for posting all of these quilts Mary! I would love to have your brown and white polka-dot little goat. What a sweetie. You’re a saint for taking all of these orphans in. Pammie tugged on my heartstrings as well. She has had a blessed life with you…We pulled out all of our perennials (50+) from a huge garden; dug the dirt out (8″); placed new fabric and fresh soil again. (Had a huge problem with Queen Anne’s Lace or Bishop’s weed that has been invasive and taking over). I hurt from my eyelashes to my toes! We love all of our gardens but this may be overkill at our ages!!! I still wish for more flowers and a garden room like you have!!
Forgive me for asking, I can’t find the name of the small saw that you had mentioned you liked so well for trimming etc. I need to get one of them! I know you posted it but for the life of me my old eyes can’t locate it. : > ( I would love my morning coffee or evening tea with you on the porch…
Arlene — I have one also — it’s called a pruning saw. I have a different brand than Mary, but only because it was on sale at Ace Hardware. Mine is a Stihl.
Arlene – I’ll post the saw again tonight.
Arlene – you did what???? Who is “we”? Your husband agreed to this and helped? This would never happen here – Rick would NEVER help me do such an (to him) unnecessary project. If I could leave you a picture here I would. Saw is made by Milwaukee. I would love to have you join me on the porch!!
What a great show of patriotic quilts! Why is the we lose our MOJO sometimes for quilting? I am glad it comes back!
What of parade of quilts. There is so much talent on this blog. Thanks readers for sending in your pictures.
Took a walk already this morning, planted a few plants we had bought, and watered the garden and potted plants. Going to cut some flowers to bring in that are laying over. Might as well enjoy them inside.
Hope to get the borders on my pineapple quilt.
Have a great day everyone!
Rita – can’t wait to see your pineapple quilt!!
The Patriotic Parade of quilts the last few days has been spectacular!! Thanks for sending and, Mary, thanks for posting. 🙂
Fabulous quilts again today! Large print audio books….lol That made my day!
I love your front room, I think I could just camp out there for hours. Your goats cracked me up. My Mom’s name is Dottie and my daughter’s name is Sarah and my Sarah absolutely loves goats and always has. The “quilt show” was amazing this morning. Keep posting on your blog, we all love it!
Sue – new pics of Dottie and Sarah tonight!
Love all the quilts Got me going this morning with my cup of coffee. Thank you.
The goats and Hazel and cats adorable too. Post Dottie’s pic and Sarah and Hazel on FB! Would love to see them on there.
Fran – ok! I’ll do that tonight!
Wonderful quilts, each and every one! Love the animals, too, they are adorable.
We had a huge dust storm yesterday, and now rain! ! ! We need the rain so much.
Have a great day everyone.
Good thing I didn’t have coffee in my mouth when I read the LARGE PRINT AUDIO BOOKS! they walk among us 😝😂😂
We had a relaxing day yesterday checking the crops after the rain, and later drove to the cemetery where jays parents are buried.
The red white and blue are so awesome! Beautiful! Loved the pictures of all the animals. Hazel doesn’t even have her nose in a dirt hole!
It’s going to get hot today…91*! I better get outside and enjoy the birds this morning! They were singing 🎶 so pretty yesterday morning. And yes, we r not 55 anymore.
Joy – if you guys ever travel east on Hwy 18 towards Garner, please let me know so you can pull off the road at my corner!!
Love all the patriotic quilts! Is there a pattern for the medallion quilt with the variety of surrounding blocks?
This is called “Unity” and is a Bonnie Hunter design at Quiltville.com
Brenda in CA, I read that sign and didn’t think twice. I love audio books because I can work and sew while listening to a good book so I’m used to that, the large print made me think of all of those at our library that my friend purchases for her mom so the two categories are familiar. I just didn’t think of together they made no sense! That’s what I get for being super busy.
Dottie and Sarah are so darn cute, I just love them. They found the perfect home with all the other buddies.
Blessings to all. I am on the mad rush to get everything done before Saturday and my sisters’ arrival. I’m so excited!!
Linda in MI – and I do know how much fun you’ll have! My sister and I have virtually no common hobbies or interests. I envy you.
Patriotic quilt makers, awesome quilts! I’ve seen the dog quilt before. That quilt maker was creative making it a patriotic quilt. So cute!
Oh, my! So many great patriotic quilts. These pictures are very inspiring, but I doubt I’ll get my next one done in time for the 4th of July.
Beautiful quilts! Thank you everyone for sending them to Mary and Mary thank you for posting. As I was looking at them this morning and thinking of yesterday’s I thought of all the hours put into making them and the love and joy that went in them. Inspiring. Reminds me of that t-shirt that says “quilting keeps me from killing people” Ha! I’ve finally gotten back into my sewing room and I’m working on a Christmas quilt. Don’t ask how long it’s all been sitting there…… just happy I’m sewing again.
Lynette – I, too, am glad you’re sewing again!
I loved all the quilts. It is amazing what we can do with just three colors. It was the sign at the end though that gave me the laugh I needed all day. Thanks for the blog about life.
I loved today’s patriot quilt show! Thanks for posting, Mary.
It is always fun seeing your fur babies. 🥰
I love the red, white and blue quilt show!
I need to dig out some to show. I gave up on real live plants a long time ago. I hose off my silk plants once a year, don’t need to water or fertilize…..and I just came in from doing my Memorial Day outside fertilizing.
Happy Memorial Day..I’m a Navy brat, my dad served around 30 years then went to the P.O. for another 17 years.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Fabulous quilts again today! Thanks Mary
for posting all of them. And that picture of Dottie is precious!
