A Taste of Spring, 2-23-25

The air just felt different today – it was sunny and warm and these guys couldn’t believe their good fortune being let outside.

Becky brought me some cough medicine and I’m much better but if I’m still coughing uncontrollably tomorrow I will definitely call the doctor.

Hope you are taking the advice of your friends. Don’t ignore it.
Love the little blue dress. So cute.
We’re warmer too today. Going up to 55 tomorrow with sunny skies. My birthday is tomorrow and plan on having lunch out with brother and friends. We’re going to a small town and a very old mom and pop diner. Looking forward to getting out.

My granddaughter had a persistent cough and after she went to the Dr.(for the second time) an xray was done and she had pneumonia. So please go!! We care about you!!

Mary, Hopefully the sunshine and 40/50 degree temperatures this week help warm and lift your spirits. Necessary for feeling better. I don’t have any suggestions to help with the cough. Is it just a bad cough, or do you have other symptoms with it as well? If so, maybe google wet sock therapy and see if that can help. We are getting the warm temps too. Right now it is 47 degrees with blue skies! Yesterday was so deary with rain and snow . . . multiple shades of gray, but not necessarily colors you would want to use in a quilt. About a week ago we finished painting my sewing room. Prior owner had painted it a dark mauve but now it is a light neutral color . . . what a difference, it is so bright and airy now. Tomorrow we have a person coming out to measure for new flooring so I can’t put anything back yet. Can’t wait to sew again. Janice, Traverse City area.

Janice – oh, how awful dark mauve would be! Ugh. We’re all enjoying those 40s and 50s – the chickens are delighted.

Having a sinus infection can be so annoying….I wasi feeling icky the Monday before the big wedding on the 31st. So on Thursday I started really feeling the sinus infection coming on, I went in and my regular doc wasn’t in so I had a substitute! Grr! ‘Oh, you’ve only had symptoms since Monday??’ Plus, I had a plugged ear. So, they flushed that and then She said, well, it is most likely a virus, but being you have a wedding tomorrow I will give you a Z pak!! This was at 2 p.m. I was feeling better by 6 pm. Thankfully, I went in and ‘against her better judgement’ gave me meds! Doctors can drive you crazy!
Well, enough of that! I’m love this spring like weather! I get to have my drive by physical this afternoon and discuss my high cholesterol etc. 🙄 which I will not take meds for because it gives me sore, weak legs! Back in the doctor again 😂. One track mind, I really like my Regular doc. 💕

One more thought Mary…why do we wait so long to get help when we’re really sick?!? As women we all do this very well. Get in and have an XRAY to rule out pneumonia. That sinus infection can be treated also!
Just after Christmas I started out with runny nose, sore throat, sinus drainage etc. (sorry to describe it so well) and I let it ride. The whole mess went into my chest and it got nasty. Coughing up crud and difficulty breathing etc. (I’m an old nurse-we don’t get treated, we just die at home!!) I kept thinking it would be better “tomorrow” and then we got to Friday and of course, you can’t get in for appt. on Friday! So then we survive the weekend and this went on for FIVE WEEKS total! Finally I woke up better and lived to tell about it! I won’t do this again. I’m going to being the crying old hag in the ER next time!!! So what if they give me antibiotics and I don’t need them- GIVE them to me anyway! I’m in my 78th year and I’d rather die a shorter life that suffer through another infection! GET TO YOUR DOCTOR OR ER!!

    1. Sara in Indiana

I love your ‘rant’, Arlene! I can’t imagine how awful you felt for 5 weeks–ugh–yes, do go to ER sooner if that is what you need to do. When I worked outside the home, I used to get a 3-week cold every winter like clockwork–worst part was not being able to breathe or clear my nose, even though it was runny (thank goodness for Puffs with lotion!). My mother was a nurse (retired in 1986) at a hospital. I do not remember her EVER being sick, not even a cold (I didn’t have colds growing up, either). I don’t know what her secret was, if there was one. Maybe just washing her hands a lot. P.S. Mary, I hope you feel better soon!!

Arlene – I love your attitude!!! You got spirit, Girl! I understand the description perfectly – this time I don’t have a head cold at all – just coughing! Maybe a bit of blowing my nose but nothing major at all. JUST COUGHING!!! Good grief! I’m so sick of it after a whole week.

    Good morning Mary,
Call your doctor and ask to write you a prescription for Benzonatate 100 mg (Tessalon Perles) which are wonderful for coughing. Usually I only need one to two and the coughing becomes less or manageable. A bottle of these little “pearls” will last you a life time. I remember the first time I took one I thought well how is this little capsule going to help me? It did!
Hope you’re feeling better. So much going around this winter. I don’t even go to church with everyone coughing and not feeling up to par. We just have to get through the month of March and things will start to warm up and we see flowers poking through the dirt. Although Feb. is our shortest month it has never gone on for so long!!!

  7. Fran Dixon

Sorry to hear about your coughing Mary. Pneumonia is going around. Prayers for this to pass quickly.

I am back from retreat and trying to catch up at home. I did not get such done this 4 day retreat, but it was sure fun in Elk Horn, IA. Yes it was very cold but we were all tucked in and warm.

The patriotic star quilt is beautiful. Getting some meds to help relieve that cough will help with healing. I’m sure sleep is difficult with a nasty cough. Nice seeing those chicken out & about. We are waiting for the warmer weather to arrive so some of this darn ice melts.

The bunnies are so cute! The blue and white quilt is awesome as well as the little dress and all the handwork! Love your patriotic quilt so much, must feel good to have it done! Very nice of Becky to bring you some cough medicine, please don’t hesitate to call the doctor, this cough can last for weeks it was going around here in NH.

Ask your doctor for a prescription for the cough. It exists and it works. I had what I call the pre-Christmas crud. It started on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and lasted 5 weeks. I tried over the counter for about 10 days. Finally went to Urgent Care. The doctor took my condition seriously w/ a chest x-ray for pneumonia and 3 prescriptions. I was exhausted from coughing and my ribs were so sore. This crud physically wears a person out. Get on it to get some help.
    Love the old clothes-such memories.

    Spring is coming🌷🌷

Love the pictures today, particularly that blue and white quilt from Pat in Iowa City. At church yesterday, there was a lot of coughing going on. It’s everywhere. Hope you’re feeling better; call the doctor!

I wish people who are coughing or are exhibiting other symptoms would stay home. I think it is very inconsiderate to spread their germs in public areas to others when they have the option to not go out.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue in PA – I agree 100%! They aren’t being considerate to others at all – I hear people coughing during church all the time – stay home if you have a cough!

  12. Kathy in western NY

Hope the doctor can prescribe something to clean up the whole sinus thing and coughing. Don’t want it going into your chest so catch it early and get it gone. So nice of Becky to bring you something to help you.
Warmer weather sure brings up thoughts of spring ahead. We’re going into the 40’s.

    1. Li

      Kathy,
This is good advice. When it goes down into your chest. When I am sick this is the last thing I think about and the first thing I really should attend to immediately.

      1. Kathy in NY

Li, I think what scares me the most about colds and coughs is it landing in my chest with pneumonia or bronchitis. I’ve been in the hospital for bronchitis when I was in my 40’s and I remember feeling like my lungs couldn’t take another breath. And I was young then!!
A lady at our summer camp now is on oxygen 24 hrs a day due to lung damage from having a severe case of Covid two years ago. Healthy one minute and on oxygen the next is scary. So yes people should avoid spreading coughs and colds as you never know whose immune system is worse off than yours and unable to fight it. Hope you stay well.

Good to hear that you are feeling better. I loved the little blue dress. My Mom used to make things like that for me. did you see the price of the pattern? 50 cents! You can almost purchase a dress for the price of patterns these days. Take care Mary.

  14. Elizabeth

Mary, I am so glad that you are beginning to feel better! Becky was so thoughtful to bring you cough medicine relief. Keep resting and drink lots of fluids.
