Basketball! 3-7-25

I started watching at 11 today and have watched off and on all day – only to end with Iowa’s loss by one point to Ohio State. Boohoo.

One more good day and then…..daylight savings time. I HATE IT!!!

I also want to say thanks for all the ad clicks! You paid for the month’s lease on the copier. Win-win for all of us.

Think these guys might be good friends?

Got this from a reader today.

Now, why would I want to carry my chickens around?

Had to run to town today – Keeper gets the front seat but this has become Hank’s seat. Gosh, I need my van detailed but why? I carry only dogs, not people.

Remember this mess? Well, it came out very easily in several long pieces and I was able to finish the rest of the quilting with no issues.

Don’t forget the Spring pattern and Harvey, both $10.

Its a glorious 45 and some sunshine today here in the middle of Wisconsin. Most of our snow is gone which is wonderful. I really dislike all the slop that gets carried into our garage on the vehicles. Lots of folks out walking their pets on the trail behind our house, so you know its a nice day. Our son has been gone for 2.5 weeks and finally got home so he came for breakfast and to do his laundry before he flies out Monday to Canda. He travels a lot for his job and his new appliances haven’t come in for his new home. Nice to have him here for a few hours. The husband and him are planning to grill hamburgers on Sunday while the weather stays nice. I never object to someone else doing the cooking. Hank is truly loved. Glad your quilt was an easy take out, I don’t enjoy using the seam ripper.

    Mary,
I HATE day light savings time also. Probably why my favorite season is winter. I love the peace and calm that warm, cozy evenings at home quilting brings in the winter. (I know I’m in the very slim majority here).

So sad to see Iowa lose to OSU. Was hoping for a 4-peat of the Big 10 championship.
    Enjoy your weekend.

I love the chicken carrier! LOL As always, your blog is my highlight of every day. You might want to remind readers that they need to click on the “read on blog” button to get the blog with the ads which they can now click on to remove. The email version does not have the ads in it. Keeper and Hank are great buddies!

      1. Sara in Indiana

When I click on ‘read on blog’ (in the email), there are always ads, but the ads don’t always have X’s in their corners. Either they all have X’s or none of them have X’s. I do click on the X’s when they are there. In addition, the ‘Notify me of new posts by email’ option has not been working for me for several weeks. It used to notify me when there was a new comment posted, but not now. Minor issue, just thought you might want to know if you are consulting with your tech person.

        1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Sara, sometimes the ads have 3 dots instead of an x clicking on the three dots closes the ads as well. But you are correct there are some ads without x’s or dots.

Mary I’m with you, why would you want to carry your chickens? I know I wouldn’t when I had chickens. The dogs are definitely good buddies. So glad pulling out the threads wasn’t too long of a task. Have a great weekend.

Gee Mary, the blog you send that I’m able to see has
no adds. I never shut them down so I don’t know what happened. I’d love to help out, just don’t know how.
I haven’t been watching basketball. Sorry Iowa lost a very close game.
We have a pair of great horned owls nesting in an evergreen tree in the front of our yard. Last Friday I stopped at one of our local garden and nursery stores. They have a wonderful selection of all kinds of house plants and outdoor ones as well. They had a sale on hellebores and that is one that does very well in my shady yard and is ignored by the deer. But while I was there, I saw the cutest owl vase that I had to have. But because the night temperatures are still so cold I decided to keep them inside until night. Temperatures are above freezing. As I was bringing the box into the house I tripped and went flying and dirt was everywhere and my beautiful vase was in 1 million pieces. I was so heartbroken. I’ve looked around can’t find one just like it so that’s that.
Boy, keeper and Hank are the best. It’s wonderful to see them so joyful together.
There’s been a lot of discussion about chicken farmers lately. I don’t think I want to start doing that but I appreciate all those that do. I think it’s a big commitment for sure.
Glad that quilting came out easily and you could finish your project.
It’s a sunny day here, which is so uplifting, but still very chilly with that wind and 40° temperatures.
I hope everybody has a good weekend. I’m thinking of Patti and all those with health issues.

Keep us updated about the owl family—sounds fascinating to be able to watch them! Very sorry about your fall and broken vase— I think the antidote for that is to buy a yard of pretty fabric. 🙂

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat – oh, how sad about your owl! Would you have a picture of it somehow? Maybe one of us would come across one. I would love to have owls nesting by my house ….except for when I turn my chickens outside. Maybe my hens are too big for an owl to attack? I don’t know.

      1. Patricia

Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of the vase. My husband said he’d glue it together. Ha, there were so many broken pieces. I did look online but no duplicates.
These great horned owls have been nesting here since 2019 except for one year. We hear them start calling near dusk. They are so quiet and they blend so perfectly in the trees. I have some bad pictures of them from my phone camera. They have produced 2 owlets in the past. One year I saw something on the ground under the nest. Taking a closer look it was a rabbit’s head. I assume that part wasn’t edible? As far as the chickens go I think I’d be nervous about their attempting to snag one. My son was almost bonked on the head by an injured squirrel that was dropped by a hawk one day. Maybe it was already dead. Ugh.
I’ll keep you abreast of the owls. We see them briefly when they get too big for the nest sitting on a branch-and then it seems they are gone so soon.

I love how all the dogs get along. Sweet photo of those two friends snuggling. As for DST, it’s been studied and the results show that the time change is not good for our health. I’d much rather keep “bird time” al year round. Change school and work start times if morning darkness is a problem in the morning. (end of rant) BTW: I helped friends keep count during fall migration at one of the Hawk Watches at the top of the Blue Mountain, south of Hawk Mtn. Sanctuary- “bird time” is how we keep accurate records. Each hour we recorded: species and number of birds, time (always EST in our area), temperature, wind speed, wind direction, cloud type, % of cloud cover; I might have missed something as it’s been long since I kept those records. Sorry about Iowa’s loss. We’re dog-sitting one of our granddogs, Pearl. She’s a 10 year old German Short Pointer so we’re in the same age categoroy! lol As a pup, she was lightening fast but always walked nicely when I took her out on leash. We had some much needed rain this past week but that horrible March wind just won’t give up so it feels much colder than 40’s. Thanks for the reminder to click on the ads. Wonderful that it helps you out! xxoo

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Ann – so Pearl is visiting like Hank is visiting here – I love being the dog grandma. I let him do lots of things he’d never get to do at home – haha!!!
Never heard of “bird time” – so interesting.

Okay, I’ll vote for Daylight Saving Time. I can’t drive in the dark, so this helps extend my evening hours. I want to see my granddaughter play softball and games start this week at 5pm. And I just love my summer evenings. Just my 2 cents worth. I know I’m not a country girl.
Hank and Keeper amaze me. Such good friends. Awe.

    1. Lisa B

I love Day Light Savings Time! The elementary school kids near me are not walking home in the dark starting next week. (Parents usually drop them off in the mornings.) It gets lighter and lighter until I’m getting home in the light after work and have time to do outdoor activities in natural light! I’m more energized!

  7. Jamie in Phoenix

Hank and Keeper are so darn cute, I love their relationship. I miss seeing Diva Hazel, we haven’t had a pic of her in a while. I suppose she’s doing her best to avoid the fun loving boys.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jamie – you got it – the boys’ nonsense is not to her liking. What happened to your food service by now and every other amenity since it changed hands?

    2. Kim from Wi

Jamie, how are things going with food service and the new management? we are concerned with your well being and those that share the facility with you.

I so dislike DST!!!!!! I don’t think it is a 50/50 issue as the President says. I was so in hopes he would do something about it. I guess it’’s up to Congress. I guess I don’t care where we stop it……the real time or our make believe time! Just get rid of it!!!!!!

  9. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

I try to click ads, too. Glad it helps. I am happy that mess came out so easily on your quilt. It is beautiful.
Sorry about Iowa, but we were cheering for OSU. It was an exciting game!! Warming up some here in Ohio; it looks like 60’s and maybe even a 70* coming this week. Finally. I decorate each month so I will be getting Harvey out in April. Hank and Keeper are such good friends; it is fun to watch them. I read an article about a dog, I think in Virginia, that is dying. The owner put out an email to the neighborhood because the he stands in the same spot everyday and gets a few pets. Well, bless them, the neighbors and even others are coming out a lot. The Vet thinks the extra attention has prolonged his life. Very nice article.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diane – the game was one of the best I’ve ever watched even tho I was disappointed in the outcome. Yes, thank you for clicking on the ads – it really helps. Love the story of the old dog.

  10. Des

So happy to see that our ad clicking has generated enough revenue to pay for your copier. The only problem I have is that I keep seeing things I want to buy! Love those pics of the boys.

  11. Laura VS

I hate daylight savings time, too. Our state has passed a bill not to change, but keep it fdaylight savings time, year round. Ugh!

  12. Tanya T. in Houston

So glad we are helping pay for the copier! I often read, seldom comment, but do click every ad I see! Hope your winter is over soon!
