Cleanup,3-6-25

I can’t believe I didn’t take any pictures today of the clean up! Maybe because it took all afternoon to do it and get us out the driveway which meant I had to cancel my noon haircut appt. Ugh.

Tonight I managed to get all the orders filled and ready for the mail tomorrow. I’ve never been so happy with a copier! Expensive but my life is easy because it’s here – and that’s what’s important.

Here’s my dilemma on the longarm – it happened before I even realized it and Jo says it’s a threading issue. She said it should come out easily – I hope she’s right.

So here’s what I’m quilting- I made it a couple years ago after reversing the blue field if it’s going to lay on a bed or hang vertically. You might remember the issue with the flag painted on the barn. A schoolteacher painted it for me and I remember him asking me what direction I wanted the blue field. He should have known because I didn’t. If a flag was hanging horizontally I assumed if you tipped it vertical that the blue field would be in the upper right corner. And if you also assumed that, you would be wrong – so wrong! I had people drive off the highway to point out my mistake!!! Military people shamed me, most people didn’t see my error but I had it repainted correctly with the blue field in the upper left.

So when I saw this pattern I was disturbed enough to write to the company about their mistake. They didn’t care, I guess.

Wrong, so wrong!

I then proceeded to make this quilt with the stars in the upper left corner because I want to use it on a bed. That’s the quilt that’s on the longarm with all the threading issues. I can’t win with this quilt. I literally had three more lines to finish the quilt when I had the thread issue.

And that’s my tale of woe.

I took Yes, We Can America! outside today. I’m going to look back at this snowy picture in May when I hang the quilt for the patriotic season. I just love this quilt.

Look at that blue sky!

I’m watching a miracle in front of my eyes – here’s Fluffybun making herself comfortable in the house with the rest of the family. She even joined the cats eating canned food in the basement – an answer to prayer. It only took three years. Or has it been just two – anybody remember what year she came here?

And an online search for “U.S. Flag Code” for explanations and details about displaying the American flag.

It makes sense FluffyBun has had a hard time fitting in if she was mostly feral in a different location. i know she’s been a trial, but she does seem to be making progress, and I hope that continues, for everyone’s sake!

The ‘Yes We Can’ quilt is very beautiful, and the outdoor pictures in the sunshine are stunning!
I am sorry you are having trouble with your longarm, how frustrating.
Glad to hear Fb is behaving.
    Take Care/Stay Warm, 🥰

Guess I’m a “data” person. I searched the blog, and found that you posted on March 24, 2023 to introduce us to FluffyBun, who was living in the quilt shop until she got acclimated. I sure hope her attitude is permanently improved. And I thank you for giving homes to all those little furry (and feathery) lives.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Dot – oh, thank you!!! I keep track of nothing, I guess. I know she came the end of January and I probably didn’t say anything about her for awhile just in case she couldn’t stay. My neighbor, Kathy, moved to OK and her acreage was sold. I’ve always wondered if Fluffybun might have been happier staying with the acreage but she was just a feral cat to them.

Mary, your Yes We Can America quilt is beautiful and the pictures of it in the snow are just stunning. You’re a talented photographer, as well as quilter.

I also love Sandy’s churn dash quilt, one of my favorite blocks.

I know that you’re right about the position of the blue field of the flag when it’s hung vertically. But it’s a puzzle to me how that is physically done with a real flag, unless it’s flipped over so the back side faces out. Or do they make flags specifically for hanging vertically vs horizontally? Or else, I’m just spatially confused, again.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon – most flags are woven with the fabric being the same on both sides instead of printed like we are familiar with in quilt fabrics. When a flag is hung from a flagpole it needs to be the same on both sides. Did I explain that correctly? I’m not sure.

      1. Sharon F

Yes, I understand your reply. Essentially, the flag is flipped over but it’s woven so the front and back are the same. Thanks so much for explaining it!

id like to think the flag guy was dyslexic and really couldn’t tell. … that or he believed it was an artistic representation! either way, it’s still our flag and beautiful.

    Awesome about Fluffy Bun!

Love the quilt hanging outside on the fence!

We had a blizzard here but now rain and except where the snow drifted and glaciered, the snow is gone. I was at day retreats 3 days. We planned for 4 days but cut it short as the number was too low to pay for another day at the community center. I can sew at home. But should I sign into Turbo Tax and do my tax return? UGH Not enthused!

That’s encouraging about Fluffybun. My daughter is living in a house with 3 other cats and her cat will not acclimate. She hisses and carries on whenever the others are close. It’s been almost 6 months. This gives me hope that she’ll come around eventually.
Love, love, love the Yes We Can America quilt.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – I am cautiously optimistic about Fluffybun – tell your daughter not to give up.

  8. Des

Love the Yes we can quilt. Also thanks for the education on the blue field flag settings. I don’t believe that I was aware of this positioning fact. I’m glad to learn something new every day. Hope the new mellow Fluffybun is a lasting personality change.

We got a clean cover of white snow overnight! And it is still snowing lightly. Schools are all two hours late. I’m happy e don’t have any appointments today!
Love all the pictures! The “Yes, We Can America” quilt looks so beautiful in the snow! The white snow and beautiful bright blue sky are a great accent! Sorry you have to get the picker out! I was busy with my picker yesterday too! Ugh!
Fluffy bun is mellowing, I hope! Maybe Hank had a talk with her! 😂
    Have a Good Friday!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – the yard was ugly yesterday after clearing the previous snow – today this snow makes it beautiful again – snowing lightly here, not cold, picture perfect!

  10. Kim from Wi

The Yes We Can quilt is really stunning, so nice to see it against the snowy background. Wow, fluffybun has decided to join the clan, how nice. We managed to shovel and plow all 3 driveways. We could of waited for the warm weather but the snowplow always dumps a huge pile at the end of our driveways that makes it impossible to get out without scraping the bottom of the vehicles. Need to get our bikes into the shop for their tune-ups before spring gets here.

  11. Erin

Wow! “Yes, We Can, America” is a marvelous quilt! Everything about it is just perfect!

It’s good to hear that Fluffybun is doing better.

  12. Patricia

Boy what a contrast of weather with the aftermath of the storm versus the day before. That blue sky is something and your quilt is gorgeous. Everything you make turns out beautifully.
I remember the discussion before about the flag and the blue area. I guess I would call it the star area. So what happens if you decide that you do want to lay it on the table and now the Bluefield is in the wrong area.. So I guess that if the flag is hanging vertically, the Bluefield must always be in the left upper corner. It’s amazing you had people stop from the highway to let you know. Yikes.
Well, Miss fluffy bun is becoming more socially nice. I do hope she continues in this manner. It sure is better to have company.
Our storm brought some significant wind, but not significant. rain. I fear our spring and summer will be very dry. I think we’re still in a deficit here in Maryland.
Today is a beautifully sunny with some hazy clouds. A nice reversal from yesterday‘s cloudy windy chill.
May Spring be on its way for good. The teases always get you excited and then boom winter is back. We should know the routine by now.
    Happy Friday everyone!

Patricia – the flag quilt is too big to use in any other way except on a bed. Think of putting a twin/double size quilt on your round table – if I still had a harvest table maybe it could work

  13. Janice

Good day Mary, I Just love your Yes, We Can quilt. The photo op outside with the snow and blue sky is just great. For us, the storm Wednesday night / Thursday morning resulted in black ice, with some snow and and strong winds. All the schools were closed. Late morning, the sun came out and temps went above freezing. By early afternoon, the roadways were all dry and you would have never known we had a storm come through . . . at least where we live in this area. That is good news about Fluffy Bun. Was Tim in the barn during your storm? Janice Traverse City area

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janice – sadly I have not seen Tim for several weeks – he must travel for miles because I’ve talked to all my close neighbors and they don’t know him. Typical of a man – just do your own thing and never mind that somebody might be concerned.

  14. Karen Moore

Maybe in the picture a few days ago Hank was having a talk with Fluffybun and telling her that this was a great place and no reason to be afraid.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Karen – I do think Hank has something to do with her attitude. Hanks mom says he’s a lover not a fighter!

    2. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Karen, I like that, made me chuckle. But just maybe that was what was going on. I am glad FB decided to get along.
Mary your quilt is beautiful and always pictures of quilts in the snow is stunning. Rains have stopped and we’ve had a few beautiful sunny days.

  15. Kelli in NE Ohio

I’m so happy to hear the news about Fluffybun! Yay!! 🎉👏

What a frustration to get so close to the end and have a threading issue 😡 and thank you for sharing about the blue in a flag hanging vertical I would have thought the same as you so I appreciate you setting me straight!

The Yes, We Can America! Quilt is stunning and I love the photos outside in the snow!

Thanks for making my coffee time with your blog each day! Nothing like sipping and “meeting” with quilty friends 🥰

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kelli – this is also my favorite time of day – sitting by the window and chatting with all of you.

  16. Kathy in western NY

I see another book in the works about Fluffy Buns tale with your words and creativity. How to get a long!
Sandi, I love the churn dash block. I have a box of several I’ve made and your quilt tells me I need to make a few more and finish that UFO.
Your straight line quilting makes the design of Yes We Can America stand out. Doesn’t deter from the design and colors. Beautiful quilt. Blue skies after a storm are a welcome site.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – if only I had a publisher and illustrator – I could write dozens of kids books about pets.

      1. Kathy in western NY

Mary, you do have the ideas. And skill. Our church secretary has a children’s book coming out later this month and his publisher signed on for him to do three more. It’s about animals and getting along. I can’t wait to get my hands on it. He does have an illustrator friend and being a days drive to NYC might have secured him the publisher but I will find out more and get you information. I told him don’t quit his part time gig with us cause he’s so good and proficient on a computer that I have so much admiration for him also doing something else too.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – marketing is a huge part of publishing. Where is his market?

          1. Kathy in NY

I’ll have to ask him this question next time I see him. He was hoping Dolly Pardon would want the book for her big give away to kids she does and his publisher seemed encouraging. I have a lot of questions for him!

          2. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – I have not bothered figuring out listing on Amazon. All books must have the ISBN code printed on the cover as well

  17. Lynette in Orlando

Mary, if I didn’t say it before, thank you for the snow photos. I’m not a cold weather person, but I love how beautiful the snow looks especially when it first falls. I started laughing when I read your comments about the flag — I made the same mistake! Even got into a heated discussion with someone over it! They had a flag hanging vertically with blue in left corner and I said, it’s hung wrong…… well, I was the one that was wrong. And my thought was the exact same one as you! I also have that same Liberty pattern. I have many flag quits all over my house and every time I’ve picked that up to make I put it down as I have the same thought that the blue is in the wrong corner! Well, you’ve inspired me and when I make it I will move the blue portion.

Glad to hear Fluffybun has come to her senses!!! Hopefully that will stick and she’ll stay like that. Cats are such funny creatures aren’t they? Love mine to pieces.

I hope everyone has a great day! Thank you Mary for your “blog about nothing” — I so enjoy reading it. Really brightens my day.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynette – well , you understand about the blue field of the flag now – I was also so wrong but have told this story many times. My barn is very visible from the highway and the first time someone pulled off to confront me, I was appalled. One of the pictures in the Susannah book had to be reversed so the flag hung correctly. I still wonder why the high school teacher doing the painting didn’t know this.

  18. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

I love hearing good news about Fluffybun. I hope she settles in. She’s in such a good home.
It’s nice to see your quilt outside. Beautiful. Yes we can American is an outstanding quilt!
My dog is funny. I bring out a towel to dry him off, and I lay it out on the floor. He likes to lay on that towel! A curious habit I think. And squeeze himself behind the chairs, up against the wall, or between the chair and the end table. When the whole couch is avaiable. I never know where I will find him.

  19. Martha W in WY

Your Yes, We Can America quilt looks so spectacular outside with the snow and brilliant blue sky. Thank you for sharing it. Do you mind if I take a photo of it?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – please, use the photo if you like – I wish the designer of this quilt read the blog so she could see how much I love this quilt.

  20. Jo in Wyoming

    That is a great quilt.
Uh, I do hope you don’t have trouble pulling the thread out. I use Glide and it’s slick.
The moisture from the snow is a true gift. After the time changed, the tulips will start pushing up. Spring starts. Yeah

  21. Karla T NE Iowa

That’s so great about Fluffybun! I hope she continues to be comfortable around her family from now on. That has to be such a relief for you all. I really love your Yes We Can America quilt. It makes me want to make one.
