Friends

Reed came over yesterday and we picked some ripe tomatoes.

We also checked on the pumpkins and gourds, planted a coneflower, played with the kittens, moved several plants to a sunnier location, checked out the wool batts in the trailer ( leftover from years ago) and watched the Fab Five.  The Fab Five are those four last chicks and the lone chick that was just a bit older.  They now all hang out together and we are debating on their sex.  Honestly I’m afraid I’ve got 3 more roosters and 2 hens in the Fab Five.  Can’t say for sure yet but that’s what Reed thinks, too.  He talked about putting a harness on his hens and taking them for a walk so when I took him home I threw in a dog harness and a leash.  We tried it but the harness just didn’t fit quite right (imagine that!) so I think we’ll order a couple harnesses from Amazon and give it a proper try.  I have a feeling Myra and Vera would like to walk a hen, too.  They were all so excited!  Now who do you think is getting the most fun out of this little adventure?  That would be me, of course!

And now I’d like to introduce my “new” friends, Arlo, Zippee and Pepper.  Three of my friends have recently gotten new puppies.  Here is Arlo, an English black lab.

And Zippee, a Golden Retriever.

And here’s Pepper, the Border Collie.

None of these puppies live close to me but I am going to meet Arlo on Monday – I can’t wait!

I finished Beartown by Frederik Bachman and loved it.  The story revolves around a small town and their high school hockey team – I want another good book!

Hi! Thank you for your note today and all those pictures. That Reed is one handsome boy enjoying all the farm animals! Love the puppies; they are so cute. I am trying to read all of Bachman’s book since I read A Man Called Ovie! Just great summertime reading.

Enjoy your days. We certainly are having beautiful weather. Have to be outside!!!!

I loved Beartown also. I am getting ready to have three junior hockey players move in for the season..I have been hosting players for ten years mow and love it. So I could relate to the book

Sandy – you sure could relate! I’m a sports fan but have to admit to not knowing much about hockey.

  3. Dee

Oh, my gosh! I wasn’t to hug all of those soft balls of fluff! My dad’s name was Arlo so just love that. We adopted a corgi, Australian Shepard mix a couple of weeks ago. She is 2. We just love her. Can only imagine how cute she was as a puppy.

Dee – Arlo’s last name is McKenzie – doesn’t that just roll off your tongue? Arlo McKenzie – I just love his name!

Have you read Alexander McCall Smith’s ” The Ladies # 1 Detective Agency” series. Such fun reads. I am so glad that you seem to be doing better!

Dale – I read this series on audible – the accents of the readers were excellent and made the series more delightful!

  5. Charlotte Barnard

Reed is such a fine, sweet young man. I am so glad you are friends. I love this account of your day!

  6. Sue Smith

All the puppies are adorable, but I would snap up that Border Collie in a New York minute.

Reed is such a cute guy. Nice to have him for a neighbor and friend.

Your tomatoes are looking good. Mine are coming along too. We have a light summer rain today on the West Coast. Hope it stays light for the sake of the tomatoes.

2 book recommendations for you: Watch me Disappear by Janelle Brown and A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. Perhaps you’ve already read them? If not, enjoy!

Great arm full of Tomatoes that Reed helped pick. Guess he has better eyes than Rick when looking for cucumbers. All those puppies are really special especially the Border Collie. Sp glad to see your blog again. It’s the first thing I look for. Thanks!

I think both you and Reed are enjoying this special friendship. I had two dear retired neighbors growing up. Charlie and Sidney enriched my life in countless ways.

Walk chickens? I love it. Tell Reed if it works, I am going to be giving harnesses and leashes to chicken friends for X-mas. Puppies are always cute. Thank you for the smiles and laughs

    Arlo
    Zippee
    Pepper

    three puppies
Arlo with the biggest feet I have seen in decades ….
    Zippee with smaller feet and
    Pepper with positively dainty feet….

they all poop but the size of their feet gives a big hint to how much…. hehe

Thanks for posting the puppy pictures. All three are great breeds. I have an 8 1/2-year-old chocolate lab. We just love her. We got her as a puppy. Sometimes we still see the puppy side of her

I can tell I’m ready for retirement. Today I purchased 27 pounds of sweet red cherries. Couldn’t pass them up. Only $19.99. The fruit jars are in the dishwasher and I’m looking for my canning book that I haven’t used in years. Thanks for posting your gardening and harvesting pictures. You’re an inspiration.

Your tomatoes look great! Have you read ‘The Nightingale’ by Kristen Hannah? Very good

  14. Maria Honkala

I also had a little friend over this week to help in the garden. We ended up laying in the hammock, playing with my chocolate lab, holding my new dutch baby rabbit , and watching the chickens and just talking. No gardening got done! I feel friendship with youngsters is just so uplifting, they see things in a different way and I had so much fun.

      1. Maria Honkala

Well… I actually do have a blog, but never seem to find the time to write. Thank you Mary, for giving me a push to start writing again. If you find the time to read my blogs it is thefarmatmillvillage.blogspot.com

I love reading about your stories of adventures with Reed. He seems like such a sweet, special boy, and I’m sure he loves his time with you as much as you enjoy hanging out with him! Now that I’m retired, I am lucky to be able to take college classes again, and I treasure the new, younger friends I have made.

  16. Ginny

Sweet puppies every one of them! You have probably read Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns but bu chance you haven’t you should. It’s a book I have read several times.

  17. Lee

Mary, puppies are just the best. Have you read any of the Maisie Dobbs books written by Jacqueline Winspear.? They are set in England between WWI and WWII. I have read five of them and enjoyed each one. Lee

  18. Ann Barlament

    Awwww…puppies!!!

I’m hooked on all of Kendra Elliott’s books! From the moment I start reading that first page, I can’t stop until the book ends!

  19. Beverly

Just finished reading Before the Fall & The Woman in Cabin 10. Highly recommend both.

  20. Carmen

Oooh! I love Danish Puff, could eat the whole pan by myself!! Love those puppies, so cute!

  21. Diane

We are in Alberta, Canada so haven’t replied lately. I love all three puppies. Arlo McKenzie will probably bark with a Scottish brogue!! I am reading Jodi Picoult’s PLAIN TRUTH. It’s an older one, but I hadn’t read it. I am enjoying it so far– only on page 50. Chickens on leashes? I am laughing at the picture in my head. Sooo nice to have such a sweet helper in Reed😃😃. I also just finished THE HANDMAID’s TAle. It was excellent, but somewhat disturbing to ponder.

    1. CountryThreads Post author

Diane – since its now a movie, I think I should reread the Handmaids Tail and I like J. Picoult, too!

  22. maxine lesline

Chickens are interesting…. For a good read try Francesca’s Kitchen by Peter Pezelli… Italian-American grandma babysits a single mom’s two kids after school and wins their reluctant friendship..partly with her home cooked food…especially her spaghetti sauce. Also The Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan.

  23. Sunflower

The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick was terrific! I’m reading her second book now. Be sure to read the Maisie Dobbs books in order.

  24. Felicia Hamlin

Love the puppies. Such cuteness. I just finished ” The Shadowland”. About a Bulgarian family and an American girl. Very interesting since it is set in Bulgaria, a country that most of us don’t know much about it.

      1. Felicia Hamlin

Mary, I think you would like it. In the same lines as The Nightingale. We’ll see you at the EXPO.

  25. Janice Brown

The three dogs look so sweet and lovable!

Some suggested readings. The first two authors are mystery and the last is humor.

Louise Penny – Chief Inspector Gamache series
Martin Walker – Bruno, Chief of Police series
Bailey White – Mama Makes Up her Mind: And Other Dangers of Southern Living
