Help From Friends, 1-15-26

Last Monday my friend Sue came from Austin, MN to help corral all the loose patterns and today my friend Jan from Blue Earth, MN came and cut the start of a scrappy quilt for me since rotary cutting is hard on my shoulder. Jan also brought lunch and a bag of unbaked cookies for me to bake. Oh my!

In the meantime my cleaning gal was here, too so I’m in good shape! I start PT tomorrow morning. We’re heading below zero this weekend and just FYI – no sign of the goose. It’s like an alien reached down and snatched her up without dropping a feather.

Meet Hammie!

Teresa’s son’s pig who needed a coat to keep him warm.
Can you spy the cat?

If you keep your phone in your pocket like I do, there’s always a shot to take. If I had to go look for my phone, Mortie would follow me and I’d have missed this pensive pose.

I’ve had such a full two weeks I’m looking forward to the cold weekend to stay in and relax.

I’ve got a few hours to sew before bed – talk tomorrow!

Just when I think my brain has listened to enough for one day, I learn of pet pigs and what a life Hammie has. What an interesting comment telling of his life.
Hope PT went ok for you Mary. Your little pal Mortie looks so sweet on the stack of books. I hope she stays indoors so nothing could happen to her. It’s so strange your goose just vanishing like that. It’s hard not to worry.

Great pictures as usual. A pet pig. That would take some getting used to. Amazing how smart they are!!
Mortie is the cutest!! Lucky cat to have found you.
Sorry about the goose. I know you tried hard to keep them safe.
Been moving stuff around, trying to get organized. It’s a daily thing to keep up with stuff!!! I’m afraid I have too many hobbies!

Strange the goose vanished. Alien abduction? What about Tim? Hope he has returned. So thankful for your friends to help out. Where would we be without them?!
Pamper yourself and give yourself time to heal.

Tim was here yesterday after a 10 day absence but not here today. I cannot understand where his second home is.
And the goose – I continue to search. It’s as if an alien DID reach down and grab the goose without a single loss of feathers. My friend Bob even looked up an eagle attack but even an eagle can’t pick up a goose, I guess. Every single time I go outside which is many times a day my eyes are looking, searching for a clue. And if I ever discover her body I hope she didn’t die from my lack of care in some way. I hope it was a freak accident and she died quickly.

Mary, do you have coyotes in your area? They don’t leave much of their prey behind to find. And they are very quick. I’m sorry for whatever happened to your goose.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon – yes, we do have coyotes but there’s a 6’ chain link fence around the property and everybody I ask says a coyote wouldn’t bother climbing that fence and would have a hard time getting a goose back over plus there would be feathers everywhere. And not only that , we have many hog confinements around us that have dead hogs outside the building waiting to be picked up. The coyotes are well fed and I doubt would bother with a single goose. But at this point I’d believe almost anything.

Mary, Just a thought! I don’t think Tim has a collar, but maybe you can get one of those Amazon trackers people use on luggage, etc. Just a Thought! You could put his name on the little identification charm, then his other family will know ‘where’ he goes too. (And his other identity)! Hope he comes back soon.

Cynthia – well, that’s sure an idea!! He’s definitely well fed and cares for. He’s gone now in this viciously cold weather – I hope he doesn’t travel today.

Snow came overnight so we spent the morning shoveling and plowing our house and both kids. They were working and who wants to do it in the dark. They say the temps will go below zero the next few days. I hope the missing goose shows up and is okay. Love seeing all the wonderful cats and those that love them. We are pet free and its best for now. I think some homemade bread and a pot of chicken soup will be on this afternoon’s agenda and we will stay in and watch it snow. I will get my card in the mail.

So Hammie is my son’s pet pig. She is hilarious, I had no idea a pig would have personality. Before all of us moved to this little farm, Hammie was a house trained pig that would ask to go outside to go to the bathroom. My son asked me to make her a coat cause she loves to be warm. We have a dog doorbell so Eddy can push it with his nose to ask to go outside (we did this so he wouldn’t scratch the door). The few times we pig sat Hammie when Eddy pushed the doorbell she would get up from her bed and go outside too. So funny. Now that we are here, Hammie has a stall in the two stall barn and she’s happy. In her stall is an XL dog crate with a dog bed and a few blankets. She literally is a pig in a blanket because somehow she can roll herself up in the blanket to be cozy. Sometimes only her nose sticks out. She has come in the house after a bath, and stayed in for two days. She likes to cuddle with my son. I don’t cuddle pigs. My son has the biggest love for all animals and has all his life.

So nice of your friends to help out with cutting for scrappy quilt and organizing patterns and best of all bringing cookies to bake.
The cat peeking in the window was pretty creepy looking. I had to look at it twice to really make sure it wasn’t a statue!

Have greatly enjoyed all the cat photos and of course some wonderful quilts! It lifts my spirits each morning to read your blog. I have had a difficult time the past 12 months, Due to osteoporosis I have fractured both of my femurs requiring surgery and a lot of recovery. Thankfully I have a wonderful husband who provides great care including taking over the cooking.

Laurie – oh no!!! Both legs??? I think you need a card party to cheer you up – a card arriving in your mailbox from a stranger who is kind and concerned about your welfare would give you a boost. Could you tell me a bit about yourself and then give me your address. Send it to my email maryehazel2020@gmail.com

Linda – Mortie, like most of us, is slender at this age but in a couple years she’ll likely have that middle age bulge!

So glad your friends rallied round and pitched in to help! Hope PT goes well and helps.

Absolutely LOVE Hammie! He’s just too cute! I wonder if other readers have pet pigs?? The photo parades always male my morning coffee fun – thanks for all you do!🥰

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kelli – I think I should ask the readers what other types of pets they have – oh, this could be fun!!!

Good luck with the PT! Mortie is so adorable I wish I could squeeze her.

Thought I’d give an update on Mom (Beverly Weaver in the previous post). We met with the director and at least she didn’t make any excuses about the delay and is researching with a promise to report to us by Tuesday. You know, when we toured the place a couple years ago there was a lot of positive sales talk that has ended up to be quite misleading. For example, if you are on the independent (no health care) plan, pulling the emergency cord really just means they will call 911 for you if needed (though Good Samaritan laws do apply). This is because they aren’t licensed to give medical care unless you’ve contracted for it. I won’t go into all the details, but we now know what to expect and not expect. And Mom will for sure call 911 herself if ever needed again. Mom was direct but polite, and feels she was heard.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Becky – I’m glad your mom cleared up arrangements – when looking for a place to go, it’s hard to know what questions to even ask. I know because my mom had a stroke and I knew I couldn’t take care of her at my home. We assumed so much that wasn’t even mentioned . Sigh. I pray I can die at home.

Ah the pig in a blanket is a hoot. I can’t send this to my sister, she’d have to have one! And the picture with the mouse and the cat surprised me. Yeah, I’m planning on staying in this weekend too. Always fun and surprising things on this blog. Thank you.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Dee – I’m curious about your sister – does she have lots of animals? Lives in the country?

  11. Francine Fagan in Dubuque, Iowa

How great your friends came bywith a helping hand, food, and a good visit. Tonight we had an inch or so of snow and wind over a couple hours. I have sewing lined up for the weekend and a new book, Twenty Years Later by Charley Donlea, a mystery. Watching Iowa women basketball now. Go Hawks.

  12. Sally

Mortise is so sweet. The books she is on look interesting. Hammie, a pig in a blanket! Sorry I couldn’t resist.
More beautiful cats! I love the quilts! Would love to make that cat quilt someday. Hoping the PT does some good for you tomorrow, Mary.
