Here’s Hank! 5-31-24

Hank’s visit was just what we needed!

Hazel is much too dignified for such nonsense.

This succulent desk is looking for a new home – anyone?

It’s been a rainy day – I’m relieved that the mowing was finished – for a few days.

Didn’t even know these were irises

More basketball on ESPN this weekend – Caitlin and The Fever. They’re having a tough time with two more losses. Makes me sad to see Caitlin so discouraged. Sigh.

Dirty Dozen Day tomorrow – our last Dirty Dozen Day. I’m ending this game and thinking of something new. Finish whatever you have left on your list and thanks for playing!

Hank is a handsome hunk of puppy and love seeing him play on the farm. Your yard looks perfect for walking barefoot, something I miss doing.

The look on Hazel’s face is awesome. Like, “what is WRONG with you boys?!?” What a treasure she is and how fun to see Hank and Keeper playing so enthusiastically.
The quilts today are so pretty. Teresa’s bright colors are very cheerful and the Forget Me Not is so serene. Just beautiful.
We’re home from New Mexico and I am so glad. The wind was terrible the whole time we were gone. After days on end it just gets in your head and drives you crazy. The country was beautiful though so at least there was that.
I can’t wait to get all this laundry done so I can get out to my shop. I have a quilt that has been stewing for over a month and I want it done. I’m ready for a no brainer quilt!
Supposed to be 108 tomorrow. Ugh

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat in Az- 108??? What must that feel like? It was 72 here today. When I talk about 10 below zero, that’s impossible for you to imagine, isn’t it? Like 108????

      1. Pat in AZ

Absolutely correct! Cold like that is unimaginable to me. Right now we have no humidity at all and you can almost feel your skin crinkling up. There isn’t enough lotion in the world to help. In another month the monsoon should be here when it’s 110 to 115 with humidity. It feels like sticking your head in the oven. I just get all the outside stuff done before the sun gets up too high (7ish) then head for the AC.

Oh, Mary- I would love to have your beautiful succulent desk and Hank too! They are both so awesome! I haven’t asked but giving 2 paws 🐾 up from penny and Lucy😻. But I am not local and Hank already has a mama❤️. I sent you 2 grief videos by a lady vet in an email a couple of days ago. I watched them when Emily passed and it comforted me so much, I thought you might like them too. My sister just had to put her 15 year old kitty to forever sleep and sent them to her. For anyone else needing some comfort her name is Sarah Hoggan, DVM, on YouTube, pet loss and grief. Take care, hugs.

Pamela – I have to say I’m about halfway thru one of them and I already repeated some of what she said to Rick – she is great! I’m sorry I hadn’t gotten back to you. I told Rick about her dog’s last meal and what she imagined the dog said to her. I loved it. Thank you!!!

Dear Mary, I would think our drought is over. It is amazing that we have not had gully washers yet. Our land has had rains that our land has soaked in and not overflowed! That is such a blessing. Jay was able to mow this afternoon! Everything looks so nice and smells so nice! The birds are so busy singing! Love living in the country!
    Have a good Sunday!

  5. Sandy

Hi Mary, here l am in Brisbane, light rain when we arrived, bumpy flight, very windy weather! Love Keeper’s brindle coat,Hazel looks so white, not wanting to get dirty! Going to see my aunty Lorraine today(she is 90) and lunch with sister Robynne and family. Later sister Gwen will arrive with Eileen the dog and it will be bedlam for a while as she hasn’t seen my brother for a month.Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  6. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Thank you everyone for your nice compliments on my quilts. I belong to a quilt guild that donates “preemie” quilts that are 36 x 36. We give them to the Neonatal intensive care unit at our local hospital. Every February we have a theme and this year we donated about 60 quilts that month alone. Our guild goal is every preemie born gets a quilt. They are so quick to make because of the size. The picture of Catherine and Eddy is our granddaughter with our dog Eddy. Hank is adorable and growing so fast. Looks like they are having a great time playing. Have a good weekend everyone.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa- I have a question about the quilts – can you pick any pattern you want and make it 36×36 or does everyone make the same one?

      1. Betty Klosterman

I don’t know about Teresa’s quilt guild, but our guild also makes quilts of given sizes for different groups. We can make any type of pattern keeping the size and age groups. Examples are pediatric, lap, twin, twin size special for the childrens home as they have bunk beds and have to make their own beds, etc. It is very interesting to see what the quilters imagine.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Betty – I think that’s such a worthy cause and so great that many take part in making assorted sizes of quilts. What’s new in Rapid City?

        2. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Yes, we have four or five different groups and there are different sizes for each group.

      2. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Hi Mary, we can make whatever quilt pattern we want. February is the only month there is a theme. This seems to get people motivated. We have about 130 members. The guild provides backing and batting for our donation quilts. These two make 8 I will have donated this year. We only meet for 10 months so not too bad.

  7. Susy in San Diego

Always fun to see Hank! The playful pictures started my day off with a smile. Love Hazel.
    Love the blog.

  8. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Love the pictures of Keeper and Hank having fun!! Love Teresa’s quilts with all the bright colors. Love how the rows of white set off the colors. Beautiful showcase of the farm as usual.I
Carolyn of West Central Ohio , Troy Ohio home of the Troy Strawberry Festival that’s this weekend. Rain in our forecast.😕

  9. Joy in NW Iowa

Mary I’m so glad Hank came to visit! Those two dogs sure do have fun! Miss Hazel is quite the lady until a rat or a possum or some raccoon appear in the scene hahaha
You are fortunate you have your mowing finished. We had another 1 1/2 inches yesterday —- that’s 3 inches in 8 days! Some areas just south of us had 3 1/2 yesterday with flood warnings. There is rain in the forecast thru Sunday! Hubby is getting edgy, the corn needs sprayed and the yard needs mowed! Everything is so green!
There was suppose to be a car show in Luverne, MN last evening. But with all the rain around the car didn’t come out.
    Have a Good weekend! Hugs

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – I can imagine farmers getting anxious – I think our drought is over, don’t you? My mowing might be done for this week but it won’t be long before I start over. We traded in some old lawn mowers to a neighbor kid who works on old ones and then sells them so I have a bigger John Deere

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – keeper just bumped my hand and my reply went before I was done. I also have a new zero turn mower arriving in June – 50”! They are definitely expensive but I wanted a back up spare – ha!
Car show wouldn’t have been much fun in the rain – especially if you were driving a convertible!!

  10. Vicki Ibarra

I will miss the dirty dozen, but I have the impetus to continue to work through my stash. I hope we will still see photos of readers’ quilts. I enjoy those, along with those of everyday lives. I believe it was yesterday where there was a yard picture that had irises in the front, a windmill a little further back, yet farther back a field, and at the very back there was lots of woods. That was a wonderful view of country life.

It is raining again this morning. Our cement septic tank lid collapsed last week and we will have the tank replaced this upcoming week. Thank goodness we have been able to continue to use water/toilets! With all the rain, our lawn will get really torn up with the heavy equipment needed for the replacement work. Oh, well. What else do we have to do besides level the yard after the work is done, sow grass seed, and water the lawn? Groan.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – oh,your poor lawn!! We need a large branch cut that’s hanging over our roof but I just don’t want to do it until it freezes. Repairing the lawn is hard work and I can’t do it without “equipment” and Rick never thinks it’s necessary – thinks it will level off on its own!!!! Looks awful.

  11. MaureenHP

Loved seeing the dogs at play!
The medallion quilt design would make a beautiful rug!
    Enjoy the weekend, Mary.

  12. Donna Jo

So glad Hank came to visit. He and Keeper sure had fun. Teresa has been busy. Just saw this morning where June is supposed to be hotter than normal across the US. Ugh.😑 Will miss the game today but Dan is going to tape it. Hope we win!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna Jo – oh, I hope we win, too, just to encourage Caitlin. Its going to rain here so I’ll be inside. I am at the point to start a new project but I’m so overwhelmed with choices that I just sit and stare at them – can’t decide which one to start.

  13. Gloria from CC

What fun the dogs are having playing together. And I agree – Hazel is a diva and rough housing is beneath her. Love all the quilts.
I will take the succulent desk if no one else is able to take it. I have plenty of room. And you can meet Caitlin. Let me know.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Gloria – I’ll wait a bit and see if anyone local wants it before I bring it to you. Happy Belated Birthday to Galen. Hugs to C! You could call her CC as a nickname!!

  14. Janet S

Theresa, I love your quilts. Great colors.
Mary, Your Miss Hazel looks exactly like the diva she is. So superior to those kids who are wrestling and acting silly.
Pauline, It’s great of you to share weather from your part of the world. It makes us all be international friends.
Catherine and Eddy are already best friends.
Hopefully, our rain (in Minnesota) has stopped for a while.
    Have a great weekend everyone.

  15. Barbara Yarnell

Love the quilts today, especially Teresa’s and the Forget me Knot. Beautiful! I’d gladly adopt the succulents but I won’t be up your way again until August. Years ago I had a succulent garden with lots of big rocks…I should do that again in the new place. We sure have plenty of rocks here! Glad that Hank could bring a smile back to the farm.

too bad florida is so far away from iowa. i’d love to have your succulent desk. the damage in transit would be horrid. the ‘forget me not’ quilt is fantastic. the squares quilts are great too – right up my ally. i am old enough now that i prefer to do the easier stuff. i also have tons of pre-cut squares and strips. i still have involved quilts that i need to finish – in due time. my poor ‘dirty dozen’ quilt is still basted and waiting to be quilted. truly sad as it’s a miniature. good grief. just not in the mood. though now i’ll be making backs and bindings for five quilts to go with tops to my angel group the end of next week. started to cut reds and shirtings to make a bow-tie quilt cuz i want to – will toss in a few blues too. got sidetracked by smaller strips and making small string blocks. oops. looking at keeper and hank ‘rassling’ is so much fun. hank has almost caught up to keeper in size already. won’t be long now. (smile) i’m glad he could come to visit to give everyone on the farm a lift. hugs to all at the farm and readers also. patti in florida

Can you box Hank up and send him to my house?

Amy came up and helped me turn on the sprinklers, update the computer, print labels. She is a doll.
Loretta hears us talking and comes running.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – I’ll ask his mom if he can come for a playdate with Loretta!!

    2. Hank's Mom

      Jo,
Hank is ALWAYS up for a ride in the pickup, but Wyoming might be a bit further than either one of us would like to travel right now, but it does sound fun. I’m sure Hank would love you.

Thus far the only thing he hasn’t liked was a white enamel bucket that I had a plant in. I moved it on the patio Saturday and he barked and barked and barked. I can sleep well knowing that no enamel bucket is going to sneak into our house. LOL

  18. Cindy K

So fun seeing the dogs having a good time. Too bad I live so far away or I’d take that desk off your hands.

  19. Jeanie S, Central IL

Hank is adorable; it is fun seeing Hank and Keeper playing—so much youthful energy. Thanks for all the pictures.
Tomorrow is the strawberry festival in a nearby small town; it is a one-day event with strawberry pizza, pie, etc being the focus. There is also a car show, crafts, a quilt show, and entertainment. My weaver rented a booth to sell rugs and is taking a loom for demonstrations. Sadly, rain is predicted, so we shall see.
Mary, I hope you and Rick are doing okay; sending hugs.🥰

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanie / what kind of rugs is she making? We used to do these events – when we were younger! Ha!

  20. Carolyn Boutilier

Love that Hank could cheer you up and I enjoy seeing the pictures of him. He is really growing.
Nice day in the valley. Carolyn b Shenandoah Valley Va

  21. Pauline

Rain! And photos of green stuff growing! Here in South Australia it’s June 1st, officially the first day of winter, and in the last two days we’ve finally had some rain: total of 17mm, which is 5/8”, and the driest start to the year for more than 80 years. Paddocks have been dry-seeded ready for rain, but the flowery things in our garden have been befuddled, and just keep flowering. I love seeing the photos you post of your opposite seasons, as well as the animals, and quilts and all.
    Cheers, Pauline in South Oz.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pauline – I, too, love to compare seasons with those of you on the other side of the world!!! I do believe our drought of several years is over.

  22. DebMac

How nice that Hank could come for a visit and cheer you up. I would happily give your succulents a new home but won’t be up your way for a while. Lovely collection of pictures today.
