Ho Hum, 2-8-26

That’s what I thought about the game and the halftime show. What a boring waste of time.

Reader photos

Honestly my shoulder hurts too bad to sew or do much of anything. I have a dr. appt tomorrow at 11.

Who sends Lady Godiva chocolates anonymously????

Does anybody want to weigh in on the Nancy Guthrie mystery?

Mary, I am baffled about who sends Lady Godiva Chocolates anonymously. I got this beautiful box, too…I thought I must have a secret lover… Ha!
    Hope we solve the mystery.

  2. Becky in WA

Seattle is my city and the Seahawks are known for their tight-knit team culture so I enjoyed seeing them win even though I’m not into football. The teams weren’t well-matched so the game wasn’t exciting to non-locals, I guess. I’m of an age where most current music doesn’t appeal (still a 70s rocker, lol), but I imagine the 40+ million Americans who speak Spanish enjoyed seeing their slice of America represented in 1 of 60 Super Bowls 😊. I’m going on a cruise soon which will stop at San Juan, Puerto Rico, so I’ve been reading up a little. It has a long history and some lovely architecture.

Mary, I love the first quilt you showed at the start! Is that a quilt by you or a reader?
If it’s yours, is it possible to get the pattern?

I enjoy your emails everyday and love hearing about your kitties and other farm animals!

Take care of yourself and get that shoulder doing better!

    1. Joy from W. PA

Rita, since Mary hasn’t responded that it is a Country Threads pattern, it looks like last year’s BOM from Corey Yoder. It is free, Google Coriander Quilts or Corey Yoder. Hope that helps.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Rita – it’s a great quilt which I’d like to claim but no, it is not a Country Threads quilt. Another reader suggested Cory Yoder – I’d check her out.

    3. Gail in Ohio

      Hi, Rita!!
That is indeed a Corey Yoder pattern – it was her Cali & Co Mystery BOM for 2025 and was free on her site. You can probably still find the details on her blog. The quilt pictured followed her pattern except for the outer border; 2 fabrics were used instead of one.

Mary, I had an injection in my shoulder today. I have had a few & they usually help for quite awhile. My advice is don’t become a hair stylist, LOL I do hope you get relief soon!! You have had enough the last couple of years!
I was hoping to get an injection in my left index finger in the joint behind the nail. The ortho Dr asked the hand specialist there & they don’t inject that joint, piffle. I could have surgery & have a pin put in it but then my finger would look like an Allen Wrench! I can only imagine how that would hinder my quilting, not happening!

I have followed Nancy Guthrie’s case closely. What bothers me is how much technology is out there for law enforcement to use & the expertise of these many, many people & I get the impression they don’t have a clue about where Nancy is or who might be behind the kidnapping. Of course they are not telling everything, how could they? Everyday I am closer to thinking she is not alive & I hate thinking that way😢 I have to wonder if it is someone or more than one that have a problem with Savannah & it is revenge. Again I hate thinking that also. I had chills when they examined the septic tank😢 Praying for her safe return immediately!🙏🙏🙏

I did not watch the game this year. I was not interested in either team. I was cutting out a tote bag pattern for my granddaughter who wants it to keep all of her crocheting & knitting projects in. She taught herself both from You Tube & she is really good! I can’t get anyone in my family on either side interested in carrying on my quilting when I am gone. When I look at my beloved sewing room & what it has meant to me for 29 years it makes me sad. At least I know my grandmothers would be proud & I love it just as much the first first block I made!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Karen – I, too, gulped when they looked in the septic tank. Ick. I, too, hate that no one will be interested in my sewing room. I try to imagine the next owners trying to decide what to do with my perfect room.
I cut my hair very short because I couldn’t blow dry anymore. Got an electric toothbrush, too. Now if I could figure out how to put my bra on without pain.
I, too, think Nancy Guthrie is no longer alive. Think how frightened she must have been at the time of her death!!
Today is going to be a good day – no cooking and no appointments. You’re right – I hit 75 and my body rebelled! That’s ok, maybe when I get over this shoulder issue I’ll be ready for spring work. I’ve already realized I cannot rake but with enough money I’ll bet I can find somebody who can. I’m actually going to start looking pretty soon. This has been very discouraging, I must say, but I just have to believe it won’t last forever. Thanks for your comment!!

  5. Judy in Washington

I agree the game was boring and I didn’t watch the halftime show. I am from the west coast and recently moved to Washington so was happy that the Seahawks won. As far as Nancy Guthrie goes I hope they locate her soon. What an awful thing for her and her family to go through.

  6. Heather K

I am so sorry your shoulder is giving you problems and holding you back.

I loved the game and the halftime show. As a transplant, I consider Seattle home and we needed a new memory to wipe out the last Super Bowl we played! I thought Bad Bunny had such a meaningful performance. He is success story of working hard and achieving the American dream – and right off the Grammy win. My company has facilities in Puerto Rico and I have had the pleasure of going there and meeting the people – showing the bilingual aspect of the Island, how family oriented they are, even the two references to Hurricane Maria and the devastation- and the music was fun too.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Heather – but I didn’t get any of that because I don’t understand Puerto Rican!

      1. Heather K

Turns out my high school Spanish didn’t help much either ! After he won the Grammys I went down the google rabbit hole – listened to a few songs w subtitles, read about his history (church choir, charitable org, ) it was just the the electrical scene I got the reference – our plant didn’t have full power for 11 months like the rest of the island. I had to do the same research w Kendrick Lamar last year – I am not so young and hip 😉

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Heather – haha! I am old and very “un hip”. It goes with the territory, I guess. I think Bad Bunny is very nice looking and I loved his white outfit – Jimmy Kimmel made a comment last night – he never knows the words to any songs and he’s right!!! I don’t either, English or Spanish! Ha

  7. Sue Smith in OR

My husband and I loved the game and the half-time show. Watching the Seahawks in action was awesome. They played like they intended to win. The Bad Bunny preformance was unusual, yes, but there was something so special about it, too. So Hollywood, in a very good way. Bravo!! Even the commercials were fun. Then, we turned to the ice skating. Always my favorite. Weren’t the US dancers fabulous? A wonderful evening spent in front of the TV with a yummy Orange Chicken dinner to enjoy, as well.
Love all of todays quilts and place mats.
Hope your shoulder improves today, Mary. Take care….

  8. Linda K

Oh Mary, hope you get some information about your shoulder at your doctor appt. Monday. There’s never a convenient time to do any of those procedures. We just have to pick the lesser of the evils! I too didn’t watch the game, but I never watch any whole games all year. I did and usually do watch parts or all of the halftimes. No, I didn’t understand the language, but the message was perfectly clear and the music was uplifting. I can only imagine what our two grandmothers felt like when they came to America and didn’t know the language. Both kept their strong German accents their whole lives. I did spend my day in the sewing room, only I was doing a test sew out of an embroidery design and a couple quilting designs. So many projects and so little time! Budweiser captured my heart again. Enjoy the warmer weather.

  9. Jan in AZ

Pretty quilts! Congratulations to those whose DD #12 and # 4 projects are finished. #4 already?! Good for you. Like Jeanie S. the 12 block sampler really caught my eye because of the color palette. The design of the block is different than one I’ve seen before.
May today’s doctor appointment give you a plan moving forward giving you relief, Mary.

  10. Aileen

I agree ho hum game , did not watch half time and from some of the reviews I’m glad I didn’t . This is USA , please speak English , and to all the entertainers out there think of the young people that are watching you ! On the kidnapping I really hope she is ok and going home soon , but I agree with a journalist I watched , the media doesn’t want prayer in schools or anywhere else but now that it’s one of their own they ask for prayers , they have talked bad about police for years but now they want and need them . The media is awful . I do pray for all of them .

  11. Sherry Whalen

I guess I am in the minority – I enjoyed the game. I know people really love a lot of offense and high scores but I enjoyed watching the skilled defense do their magic – after all – much like money(the money you DON’T SPEND is at least as important as the money you earn) the points that you don’t allow are as important as the points you score! And as for the half time show – I know un poquito Spanish and I knew I wouldn’t understand most of the words – but I still was able to follow the story Benito – an American – was telling. This show was about how love is stronger than hate and the USA isn’t the only culture/country in the Americas. With an open mind I thought of it much like an opera – where I have little idea what words are being sung – but was able to follow the story line. I guess I don’t understand people who hate (every year) a 20 minute half time show. I don’t particularly enjoy country music – but I would still watch and not complain about the show. It’s 20 minutes out of my life and not worth getting my undies in a twist over.

    1. Sara in Indiana

Sherry, thank you for pointing out that Benito is American. I didn’t watch the game (all football games are boring to me—I’ll probably get some hate about that). And, like others, I haven’t liked some of the halftime shows in years (maybe I’m too old now to like their kind of entertainment). Anyway, my thoughts are that is a halftime show in a football game—it’s not necessary for it to represent the USA. Let the fans decide what is acceptable. I used to really enjoy the commercials, and still do, but now some of them are just annoying, seemingly aimed at juvenile humor.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sara – you hit the nail on the head. I don’t think I’ve watched one pro football game all season. I’m more interested in college and basketball is my first love. March Madness coming soon!!!! Football is too slow and games take hours and hours. Yes, I’m too old to appreciate today’s social agendas.

  12. Debra Reber

So sorry your shoulder is causing you so much pain. Hope the Dr can give you some help. I just watched bits & pieces of the game, didn’t watch the halftime show as I knew it wouldn’t be anything I would be interested in. Last year my grandkids made up their own halftime show, it was much better!!

  13. Sheryl Harrison

My friend and I went to the movies. Solo Mio was playing. We went to the Pizza Hut afterwards and ended up visiting for over 2 hours so I missed the game.

Several years ago, I commented on this blog that I buy boxes of Valentine candy for mom and me after Valentines Day when Valentine items are marked down. I haven’t done that since mom passed. It made me sad thinking about it but this year, I think I’ll be ready to buy myself a box of chocolates.

  14. Barbara in Columbia, SC

Well, Roger Goodell needs to be replaced . That half time show was horrible. We live in the USA so sing in English you dummy. The game itself was the most boring and terrible plays calls I ever saw . I’ve seen more exciting High school football games. Most of the commercials sucked. The only saving one was The Budweiser one with Lincoln the eagle and the Clydesdales horses. That one made me cry when I first saw it last week. Best one ever besides the one about 911 and the Towers. As for Nancy Guthrie, I’m wondering where her body is. The whole story is like following a murder mystery. I suspect the son-in-law. I LOVE the cardinal quilt. I’m off to church this morning for our charity quilt session. Still very cold here in Columbia but they say it’s getting warmer later this week. Maybe upper 60’s. Crazy weather for sure.

  15. Jo in Michigan

We switched back and forth on the Super Bowl. We did watch the half time show. I thought it was good. I understood what he was saying without understanding lol And the bride and groom actually got married at the Super Bowl! How cool is that!
It also amazes me how they transform the football field so fast. And I’m also glad that the Sea Hawks won And I loved the Budweiser commercial♥️ Those Clydesdales are beautiful.
I don’t know what to think of the abduction of Nancy Guthrie. There’s something not quite right. I’m sure we don’t know all the details and for good reason. I just pray she is safe and can return home. It’s an awful situation.
I hope you can find some relief soon with your shoulder. I know you don’t want to hear this and I’m so sorry but I’m thinking surgery might be the only answer. Prayers for you Mary.

  16. Des

I hope the doctor visit will help with an answer to your shoulder pain. Maybe surgery will be an option. I pinned quilt blocks together during the Super Bowl & even though the game was boring I was amazed at the speed & strength of the Seahawk defense. My Dad was an offensive lineman during his football days & I miss watching games with him. Love the quilt pics & we are waiting for a little warm up this week.

  17. Marcia-SW Ohio

Love the readers photos-nice finishes. I am planning my week to run my longarm to get some projects quilted.
Weather in SW Ohio is to be above freezing so snow piles might go down this week.
This is showchoir competition Saturdays for my granddaughter. We love attending. So exciting to hear & see hundred of students singing and dancing.
There is a down time of 20 minutes between shows. I take small projects to bind to fill the time and be productive. While hundreds of spectators play on their phones, my daughter & I stitch☺️
Didn’t watch much of the football game. Did watch the Turning Point halftime. There was such a variety of music and it was well produced. Hope the NFL was taking notes🤨
I have mixed emotions about Nancy Guthrie. Praying for her safe return. Are any family members of famous people safe?? Seeing officials draining her septic tank was very sad for me to see. Just heard that bitcoin is more traceable than what I thought. It is a well orchestrated kidnapping w/ changing IP addresses. If the money is transferred, it will be out of this country. It will be a miracle if she is alive. I watch too many ‘Dateline’ type crime shows.

  18. Paula in Kansas

I always love all of the photos. Also Mary, I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow and you find some relief/answers.

The Nancy Guthrie case makes me mad and sad. As women, when do we ever have peace and safety? Why can’t people leave us old women alone to live out our lives the best we can?

The Big Game was kind of a bust until the 4th quarter and the halftime show was ho-hum IMO.

  19. Kelli in N.E. Ohio

I agree with all the above concerning the kidnapping – someone close to her – so incredibly sad and I’m afraid it won’t end well. I watch a lot of (probably too many!) Crime shows and it has all the markings of greed….

Watched Olympics rather than Super Bowl.

Hope your dr appt is helpful – so sorry you’re dealing with this!!

  20. Lisa B

Maybe the game wasn’t exciting but my team won! I spent nearly 25 years in western Washington and still have family and friends there. Go Seahawks!

  21. Linda at Texas Quilt Gal

I hope your shoulder gets better soon. I love the reader photos, especially the sampler quilt.
I agree with Diana on the Nancy Guthrie case – I think it is an inside job. It is certainly very odd. The last video was just so sad, and I felt Savannah was asking for their mother’s body to be returned. I pray I am wrong.
I haven’t liked Super Bowl halftime shows for many years, especially since 2020 when Jennifer Lopez twerked her booty in front of my face. We watched the All American Halftime Show instead, and it was awesome. Just good music and patriotism. I watched Kid Rock perform as Bob Ritchie (his “real” name) and did not recognize him. I don’t normally care for Kid Rock’s music, but he was great on this one!

  22. Diana in Des Moines

I didn’t watch the game. Been kind of glued to the Nancy Guthrie case. I think an inside job ( daughter, cleaning lady, pool boy, etc). Unfortunately I think she is deceased as I read between the lines of the family statement Saturday. Money makes people do bad things.
Hope your shoulder gets better. Looking forward to warm weather today so the grands can play outside.
Downloaded the Geneva pattern as I think it will work great for some scrappy quilts for church quilting group. Easy!
    Take care.

  23. Lynette in Orlando

I have to agree how ho-hum the game was. I kept flipping over to the Olympics from time to time. The good thing about it being boring was I accomplished a fair amount on my cross stitch I’m working on! Halftime wasn’t my taste, but then they haven’t been for quite a few years now.

I’m sorry your shoulder is still aching. This weather certainly doesn’t help one bit. Praying the doctor can find some relief for you.

I agree with this whole kidnapping story. There’s certainly more than they can/are saying. My mind is going on why was she singled out? Certainly is very strange. I think I’ve also watched too many police dramas, but I agree with Barbara and I don’t think it’s going to turn out well. Sad. I also think there’s something off about the sheriff.

Beautiful quilts. I love (and appreciate) you sharing with us Mary.

  24. Barbara (in MO)

I wish somebody would send me Lady Godiva chocolates, anonymously or not! Haha
My question is who kidnaps an 84 year old woman and why? Sure she is wealthy but not a billionaire, I wouldn’t think.
I mean, there’s got to be more to it than what we’re being told because it just doesn’t make sense. But that’s the best kind of mystery, right? I just don’t see it turning out well for her or the family.

  25. Sharon G.

As a Washingtonian, I’m thrilled the Seahawks won!
I was with my family so half time was 3 generations enjoying each others company, food, and laughter. We weren’t bored at all. The best part is that it’s a wonderful memory. There are more important things than a half time show.

Sorry you’re in pain. Take care of yourself.

    1. Lyn Rogers

I am also a Washintonian and totally agree with Sharon G. Seahawks are very talented obviously! Exciting day with Family & good food. Also love Bad Bunny (Benito) Very talented young man with beautiful message for ALL.

  26. Charlotte in No. California

I agree Mary. What a boring super bowl game!! I didn’t watch the halftime show. I turned the TV off and had my dinner. Such beautiful quilts today.

  27. Jeanie S, Central IL

I knitted while the game was on. I occasionally checked the score and do know who won. 😊
I really like the first Reader’s Photo; it is a 12-block sampler in my favorite colors. The placemats are great, too.
That Tim must be one tough cat.
    Take Care 🥰
