So windy from the south I could hardly go outside! I didn’t let the chickens out either – too chilly. I think next week they’ll get the thrill of going outside again after a long winter – and we’re not done yet.

A reader sent this to me and it is so true!

And I got two idiot parking pictures today – you know how I feel about entitled parkers.

Since I missed church last Sunday because I literally could not walk, I am looking forward to tomorrow. When I miss church it throws my whole week off.
While watching the Olympics, I heard a very familiar song. Does anybody else remember Dinah Shore singing “See the USA in your Chevrolet” during the 1950’s? A lovely new voice is singing it again – I hope I’m not the only one who remembers Dinah Shore.
Loved the skating tonight. Are you going to a Super Bowl party tomorrow? Or maybe hosting the party? What’s your favorite Super Bowl snack? Boy, I should have asked that last week so you could have tried a new one. I’ve got a pork roast for tomorrow night but no new snacks.
Hope your favorite team wins!

I’m in my 70’s, remember Dinah Shore very well..liked her tv show also
I liked the game. I’m a Seahawks fan, so it was fun. Not so much the Bad Bunny show.
Would like to throw out the possibility that some people who park in two parking places may be older with limited neck/shoulder movement. You could argue that they shouldn’t be driving if they have trouble turning their heads to do a decent job parking. One of the plates shown had a wheelchair handicap license plate- they may have needed two to straddle two parking spots to be able to have access to get out of their truck. It didn’t look like they were in a handicap spot (may not have had a spot available).
PS
I made brownies for the Super Bowl party. Filled my house with the warm smell of chocolate.
Yes, I remember Dinah Shore and the Chevrolet song. My husband and I were in the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America for years! Looked for Chevy songs all the time! Ha
Boring Super Bowl. I didn’t care who won, but Seattle’s win didn’t surprise me. I wanted to see the half time show just to see what everyone was upset about. All because it was in Spanish. Lots of entertainers in the show, even Lady Gaga!!
Definitely remember Doris Day and the Chevrolet song. Watching the game but we don’t really serve any fun snacks. A lot of the snacks mentioned in the comments sound great though! I’d love to see the recipe for the garbage bread! It is really cold here in MA too, my computer says 8 degrees, but the wind chill makes it feel much colder. I feel so bad for the little birds outside, not to mention my poor chickens. We got around 10″ of snow over the weekend. Thank goodness it was light and fluffy because it was just me shoveling. Peter had his eye procedure last Thursday, no lifting, shoveling or strenuous activity for six weeks. Thank God, it does appear to have worked. The pressure is now normal. It doesn’t look great, but I’m sure the redness will improve over the next week or so. He’s not out of the woods yet, still has a retina specialist to see but we’re hoping for the best. Well, it doesn’t look good for the Patriots but there’s always next year, right?! Stay safe everyone – I am so concerned about Nancy Guthrie! I’m praying for her safe return to her family. Jan in MA
I’m watching the super bowl now. Don’t really care who wins. I’m definitely not a Seattle fan. I live about 14 miles from Levi Stadium and I heard the jets fly over right after they flew over the stadium. Very cool.
I remember Dinah Shore and the Chevy commercial. I’m old. We watched her show too along with the Hit Parade, Ed Sullivan, Perry Como. Lots of good entertainment back then. At least you could understand the words.
I love the zip ties in the parking picture. Great idea.
Haha! At least you could understand the words… so true!
Jan in MA
Carmen, do you have a recipe for the pineapple/ham tortilla rollup? Sounds good. Pat in Iowa City
I just love the pictures of Mortie. She made herself at home and loves you unconditionally. She was meant to be a companion for you.
I recognized the song, but I didn’t remember Dinah Shore sang it until you mentioned her. I am looking forward to warmer temperatures. I am over winter. I am working on a quilt from Pam Buda called Prints Charming. I am using Kansas Troubles fabric. There were two bald eagles in the field near our house. I never thought I would see eagles so near. Have a good day tomorrow.
love the different color eggs, the weather is brutal in New England also,
Love the shopping cart zip tied to the car, hahahahaha
Yes ma’am, my dad was a chevy man. Thanks for that memory. Been a long time ago.
I remember Dinah Shore singing that Chevrolet song quite well – I always thought she had a beautiful voice. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Patsy Cline, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Doris Day — I’m thankful that I have Pandora to switch on in the quilt room. I can’t stand football, so darn it, I guess I’ll spend the day in my quilt room.
There’s always plenty to do in there….
Years ago, when we lived in the Willamette Valley, we’d go to Grandma’s Attic Sewing Emporium in Dallas for “Souper” Bowl Sunday sale. You would get a percentage off if you brought cans of soup for the food bank. It was a lot of fun. We aren’t sports enthusiasts so won’t be watching the game today. Probably don’t get the channel it’s on anyway! I saw the Budweiser commercial with the eagle online last night. All of those commercials are the best. I’ll be sewing this afternoon.
We sang along with Dinah Shore, too. She was fun to watch. I am watching the Puppy Bowl Now; it is really fun😻🐶. And, I switch back and forth between puppies and OSU men’s bball! Super Bowl—no way New England. We are Buffalo Bills, Browns, and Bengals fans! Aldi’s Blueberry cream cheese roll with crackers for a snack. Kelli in NE Ohio would you share your garbage bread recipe? Sounds good😋. We visited the US Grant farm in Missouri with our grandkids and got to pet the Clydesdales there. Gorgeous animals. Mortie makes me smile😃😃
Haopy to share – not sure how to send- pls advise 😁
Kelli – your conversation was many many comments ago – please repeat.
Kelli, if you send recipe to maryehazel2020@gmail.com Mary should get it & maybe then she can post it. Thanks for sharing. Pat
Will try Pat thanks!
Pat – thanks for giving out that info – maybe we should do recipes – for a specific dish – not a wide open field. I wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Not snacking, not watching Super Bowl. ZERO interest as my the beloved Chiefs are not playing. Of course, there were a lot of years I didn’t watch it. Except when Paton Manning played. I’m UT alum, so there is that!! As for Dinah Shore and “See the USA, ” it is forever embedded in the music part of my brain. So, is what my long past and unlamented deceased father-in-law always called her, “Eat on the Beach.” Also, always added (just in case someone who heard it didn’t get it), “you know, dine ashore.” Instead of watching the Super Bowl, I will be working on a baby quilt. The baby’s dad is my grandson’s best friend since they met as high school freshmen. Baby due this month. No one thought to ask me for a quilt until the beginning of this month.
Marlen – EAT ON THE BEACH! That is just hilarious! I love it!
Yes. Love “dine ashore”.
I certainly do remember the Dinah Shore Chevrolet song & I can just picture you driving down the highway in little Red belting out the song! The Budweiser Clydesdale commercial is stunning & I’m sure it will be my favorite.
Yes, yes, yes! I remember Dinah Shore, the Chevy commercial and loved her show!!
I remember Arthur Godfrey show, Perry Como and YOUR HIT PARADE!! Loved them all!!
Ann – we watched all those same shows, too – such great memories!
Yes, yes, yes! I remember Dinah Shore, the Chevy commercial, loved her show!!! I’m so old!!!
The Zip tie shopping cart to the car door made me laugh out loud!!! Love that idea!!!!
Love the skating, the young man from Japan was AMAZING!
I do remember the Dinah Shore Chevy commercial, that brought back some good ole memories!
Love seeing sweet Mortie!
The best part of the Super Bowl is the commercials, love the Clydesdales.
I heard the song and sang along just like I did when Dinah Shore sang it. What a happy melody.🎶
We will be rooting for the Seahawks from our Oregon living room and then on to the Olymics. I actually enjoyed Curling last night and may have, sort of, understood the game for the very first time. LOL Has anyone watch that video of the Clydesdales on You Tube? I actually got tears in my eyes when they bowed down to the Statue of Liberty. Those big old horses always amaze and delight me and I am not a horse person. Many years ago in downtown Bend, OR, we went to a parade that the Clydesdales were in and that I will never forget. We were standing on a sidewalk curb where they were to turn. I remember them coming towards us and they just kept coming right at us in order to make the turn with their beer wagon. The lead kept looking at me with his big old eyes as if to say….relax lady. We’ve got this. And they did. They began their turn and all of them and the wagon went right around. That was a very thrilling experience. About the spring-like weather?? We had a pear tree leaf out and then get hit by a freeze. Hope it will be okay.
Sue – I don’t think you need to be a horse person to love the Clydesdales
No Super Bowl for me! I am off to retreat and will be busy settling.
Love those eggs!
Of course, I remember Dinah Shore. Watched lots of movies back then.
That was supposed to be settling in. Could have been sewing or sitting too! Ha
I’m reading this on Sunday morning. I remember the Dinah Shore show and the Chevrolet song. I love hearing all of the old advertisement “jingles”. You probably know this, but Barry Manilow wrote many jingles in his early years. It is cold here in New Hampshire. 4 degrees that feels like -8 at 9:00am. Wicked high winds last night but luckily we didn’t lose power. I don’t mind the bad weather as I’m a home body at heart. I have been working on you DD’s. Finished #12, making progress on #4 and nearly have another done as I have been whittling away on it as I worked on the DD’s. I’m also using your DD numbers to make progress on my cross stitch WIPs. So far so good!
We will be watching the Superbowl but no fancy food. I live in New Hampshire, so I’ll be cheering on the Patriots, but I like the Sea Hawks too.
I remember the Chevy commercial and Dinah Shore. Sometime in the 70’s we were in Vegas and went to a free taping of her show. Her guest that day was Wayne Newton. Since neither the Packers or the Bears are in the Super Bowl, I will probably root for the Seahawks. I generally fast forward through the game just to see the commercials. (normally I would fast forward through the commercials to watch whatever I was watching!)
On our way to church! Having Velveeta, Rotel, and ground beef with chips for snacking during the game! Not a horse in the race so I can watch the commercials and stitch! 🙂 Must tell you that I sang along and missed Dinah Shore, too, when I saw that commercial!!
I’m not sure I remember the Chevrolet song. I need to hear it to see what memory it sparks! My husband said he doesn’t care about who wins the Super Bowl this year, but wants to watch for the commercials. I can sew while he watches TV in the basement so I can see the commercials, too. Neither one of us needs snacks!!! It’s very cold here for us — wind chill in the negatives.
I too enjoyed the Vintage Chevrolet song! Brought back good feelings from my childhood.
Warmer in Texas this week, we are sending you the southerly winds and a bit of a warm up.
Hang on! The chickens will love re-discovering the yard. I can hear them happily clucking!
I am working on the Fig tree quilts Flag pattern using the Rosie Collection. Wish I was sewing with YOU!
Would love to take a picture of the flag quilt in front of your barn, with its flag quilt.
Have a great week!
Paula – I could send you that picture digitally and you could print it out or I have taken many – email me your mailing address
I heard the Chevy commercial from the kitchen and thought it was Dinah Shore. Didn’t she end her show throwing a big kiss? Growing up we didn’t get TV until I was around 10 or 12 and it was one of those little round screens, I think we got two fuzzy stations. Someone had to adjust the rabbit ears and then we feel for the aluminum foil flags you put on the antennas to get better reception. But me and my sister always did the big mmmmwaah kiss at the end of the show. And everyone could sing the jingle.
I will most likely hand sew during the game, waiting to see good commercials, especially the one with the Clydesdales and the eagle. I had the extreme pleasure of washing down one of the Clydesdales when they were in Saginaw for a special event at a beverage dealer’s huge building opening. I love those horses and every big horse I’ve seen, the bigger the better. I had a neighbor who had a stallion and three big black and white Clydesdales that I use to go play with all the time. My husband was always fearful when I went out in the pasture with them but I loved being surrounded by the beauties.
It’s below zero by my themometer so I will only have eyes unwrapped going to the barn. Hopefully it is too cold to snow today, but who knows, it seems to snow some everyday lately.
Blessings to all.
Love the clip of The Friend I never Met – so true & meaningful. If the world could just be like that, it would be a peaceful place 💓.
We are at -8 this morning. Supposed to have strong winds today, so wind chill will be bitter & then warm up by end of week.
Keep warm & safe everyone! Thank you Mary for this Friend blog ❤️
Joy: Where in Western PA are you? My husband is from the Brownsville/Uniontown area. His mother was from Marianna. Still have lots of relatives there!
Susan in VA
Susan, we are northwest of Pittsburgh, about a mile from the Ohio line – literally between Pittsburgh & Cleveland, ohio. We have a son in Ruther Glen, Virginia near the Army base Ft. AP Hill. What part of Virginia are you from?
Hello to you 👋 keep warm
I too remember that song. I heard it but wasn’t in the room to see the commercial. I’ll be watching the game tonight, Go Seahawks! but no special snacks. Probably making pulled pork sandwiches and baked beans.
I’ve heard the girl sing the new version of the song. She has a beautiful voice. The song still is a great advertising jingle. We’re not watching the Super Bowl, but my husband may have a ballgame on the tv for some sport. I’m making chicken pastry for lunch and haven’t gotten that far for supper. I finished a diagonal stripe quilt yesterday and it’s ready to go to the long arm quilter. I’ll send a picture of it when I get it bound. I’m working on a charm square quilt with sashings now. Mortie looks so cute. I hope Tim’s ear is getting better. Stay warm.
France’s E – Tim is on hiatus right now but the last time I saw him, his ear was drying up – I never did get the opportunity to get the antibiotic in his food.
I did hear the Chevrolet song, I chuckled, the old is new again. We might watch the Super Bowl , I prefer the Sea Hawks, but really don’t care. I love the Olympics, been watching as much as I can. No snacks either, a salad and a piece of chicken with canned peaches for dessert. I’m with Jo, We need snow out west .
You brought back memories with Dinah Shore and the Chevy ad. It would be nice if the Seahawks win the game only because their quarterback was with our Vikings last year. He’s really a great quarterback. Definitely, I will not watch the half-time show – it’s supposed to be awful. What I will look forward to is the commercials – especially the Budweiser Clydesdales. Hubby isn’t a fan at all so no special meals for today. Stay warm, stay safe and have a good day everyone.
Janet – the halftime show doesn’t interest me either.
I loved Dinah Shore on her TV show and her golf tournaments. I bought her Cookbook and it has the best recipe ever for Rice Pudding that she got from the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas.
Loved the online friends poem – so true! Thanks for sharing 🥰
I discovered a recipe a few years ago called Garbage Bread and I’m making it again today! It’s like a cheeseburger in a roll and has a special dipping sauce. Pair that with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and I’m set for the day 😄
I’m loving the Olympics – staying up too late but its definitely worth it
Oh yes – I remember Dinah Shore and that song. As well as her TV show. I just love how we can reminisce on this blog!
Happy Sunday to all ♥️
Yes, I remember Dinah Shore singing the Chevrolet jingle and I’m 70! Do you remember she also dated Burt Reynolds for awhile? I think that was before he dated Sally Fields.
We aren’t having a Super Bowl party, but will have friends over to watch our local college basketball team play an away game at 1. I’m making lunch; tossed salad, lasagna, Italian bread, and chocolate cake and ice cream for dessert. We eat before the game and have dessert after the game. None of them are football fans so they won’t be staying around for that. I will be too full to have snacks for the big game!
Do I ever remember Dinah Shore singing that song. I thought she was so pretty and we’ve always been a Chevy/GMC family so it was extra special.
I probably won’t watch the Super Bowl game. We watched every game this year and the teams I supported obviously didn’t make it to the end.
The cat condo arrived yesterday after 5 weeks. No written instructions but there is a video on Amazon. Unfortunately the video was for another style cat condo. We managed okay but still have the doors and the back clear wall. When I get my kittens in there I’ll send a picture so you can share with your readers.
We take treats to church this morning for our “after church social hour.” Everyone have a wonderful day.
Gloria – I can’t wait to see the cat condo!! Such lucky kittens. Where will you place this condo? I don’t really care bout either team but I’m always interested in any big competition – ha!! How’s Gaylen? My next hair appointment is right after yours so I’ll be seeing you.
The cat condo will be in the lodge facing the front door so they can see out. Gaylen is still doing great.
Well we’ll see you in March then!
Yup, I remember Dinah Shore and the Chevy song. The Perry Como Show was one of my favorites because he often had those classic and classy singers on it. My plan for Sunday will be chicken enchiladas and fresh veggies and then pizza during the game with more fresh veggies (I’m trying to empty my fridge as we’re heading to AZ and MO next week). I’ll take plenty of cross stitching with me. Also, will take quilt fabric to cut up and maybe my sewing machine. I’m making a graduation quilt for a great niece. As Jo mentioned earlier in this thread, we need moisture. It is so very dry and windy. Unfortunately, there isn’t any predicted either. 🤨
I remember Dinah Shore and the Chevy song. I am 78 and would have watched her on our little tv, which received three channels. 😄 Breakfast for supper is a favorite at our house. That adorable little Mortie looks so comfy in her paper box.
As for Super Bowl, we didn’t really get into football this year, but we will watch, no party. We are having deli beef paninies with onion, green pepper and provolone.
Take Care/Enjoy 🥰
I seem to picture Dinah Shore coming out on stage in a dress with a wide skirt singing See the USA in Your Chevrolet My mom watched her show every week No plans for Super Bowl – just not into sports, but I do luge to see the commercials. Glad you’re feeling better!
Hi Mary,
Yes, I do remember Dinah Shore. We used to watch her show in the 1950’s when I was much younger than I am now. So glad to here you’re feeling so much better.
The other day I was going through all my quilt patterns. I found one of the patterns that I ordered from you years ago. It is #692 The Goat Sampler. Do you still have your pattern? I never did make the quilt and I’m not sure why. I even lived in the country for 14 years. It would have been perfect for the wall in my quilt room.
Take care,
Dianne
Want to say “hello neighbor ” to another NE Ohio gal 😁 we might me closer than we think!
Dianne – yes, I’m sure I have a copy of the Goat Sampler.
We’ll definitely be watching the Super Bowl tomorrow … with nachos … yay!! I like both teams, so I’m OK with a win either way. I sure do remember Dinah Shore, especially the LPGA tournament in Palm Springs that was named for her. Each year, the winner of the tournament would jump into a pond after the trophy presentation, along with her caddie/family/friends. Many years ago, I can remember Dinah being at the tournament, being interviewed and talking to the golfers. Of course, I saw all that on TV, I was never there, lol! Enjoy the Super Bowl, and whatever snacks you decide on!
Do I ever remember Dinah singing that ditty. And I loved her daytime show too. She had such a warm, welcoming personality and a wonderful voice. I’ll listen for that new voice you mention! My son who flies for Southwest said to be sure and watch the Southwest Super Bowl ad. I don’t care which team wins this year. But I am for sure going to be watching. I love football and this is the last game till September!!!!! We’re having pizza!
Carol – the gal who sings it has long dark hair and dangly turquoise earrings – looks like somewhere in the southwest – old pickup
We are having little smokies, a pineapple -ham tortilla roll up, roast beef sliders, maybe a spinach artichoke dip that you spread on a pre baked crescent roll crust. No party, just for us!
Carmen – wow, does that sound good!!!
I remember Dinah Shore and the advertising..
Enjoy your Sunday ..Super Bowl, I look forward to the half time show ..
I am currently recuperating from my right knee replacement,6 weeks this coming Monday
Yesterday I sat at my machine and actually did a lil bit of sewing, ..
I have plenty of projects ,so I look forward to healing. sOON🙏🏼
Katie in Chandler,Az..
Formerly Gilbert ,Az 31 yrs.
Katie – 6 weeks and at your machine! Way to go!!
I remember Dina Shore and her talk show too. Joann Woodward, the beautiful Paul Newman’s wife, talked about autism in children. First time I ever heard of it.
My daughter in law is coming over Sunday. We generally go out and she will probably leave before the game starts. Loretta and I will watch the game together. Me in the chair, her, snoring on the couch.
As a proud mom, I want to share. When my son was in college he helped put together a commercial during the Super Bowl featuring the Budweiser Clydesdales!!!
AIRMAIL US SOME SNOW!!!!,!
Jo – oh, the Clydesdales are so fantastic! Don’t miss the commercial with the pup. How is it your son was involved in that commercial when he was in college?
He was an art major. They designed many items from tv commercials to ice cream containers. Calendars, book covers, stamps, coins, utility bills, dishes, store signs, logos.
He loves half square triangles and used those in a lot of designs.
Jo – sounds like Connie’s youngest son who was an art major. He helped make Lady Gaga’s props for her shows.
I do remember that song – I heard it too! I enjoyed the skating that I saw; I got the borders put on my quilt top while I watched.
It’s still cold here in central OH – 2 degrees at the moment and it will be colder by morning. We are supposed to start getting warmer this next week – we’re liable to have flooding if it all melts too quickly!
Enjoy the pork tomorrow – don’t know what I’m doing. I do hope to go to a Super Sunday sale at the local quilt store tomorrow, not that I need any fabric….
I remember Dinah Shore but I don’t remember the song you mentioned.
I have to agree that it baffles me when people park their cars over the line but I’ve learned to just move on. I try to give them the benefit of the doubt. Example: Maybe the person that parked before them started the mess by parking over the line first and so it’s snowballed or maybe it’s someone, like my mom who, when she was in early onset dementia, had struggles with judging distance (yes, she gave up driving quickly).
Your supper of eggs, bacon and toast looks yummy. I love breakfast anytime of the day.
Yes, I remember that song also. I think they are trying to get us old folks to buy USA/Chevys instead of imports. Looking forward to the Budweiser Clydesdales.
Our son went to Uw and played in the marching band so we are big SEAHAWK fans…have our 12th Man flying out front.
I am making red lentil chilli. New mediterranean meal recipe.
I am hoping for a good game.
Yes remember thecsong and Dinah Shore. It remindex me of my dad, gone 40 years. He loved Dinah, Rosemary Clooney and Teresa Brewer.
I hope spring comes early for you. We have had Winter-Spring all winter. No snow and currently at 8:45 pm 50 degrees. We should be in the 20s. No winter this year. Sad. We need mousture.
Shirley from central OR
Shirley – the change in our weather is kind of scary, I think. What if it doesn’t rain???
Yes ! I recognized the Chevrolet song but didn’t remember the original singer. No big plans for game or snacks. I hope for good commercials.
