Home Again, 9-10-25

Becky and I arrived at our waiting room Monday at 9:30. At 2:30 or so I sent Becky home – it sounded like I wouldn’t get out of surgery til 10 and the wait was becoming ridiculous. They took me to preop around 4:30 and I got to my room at 10:40 pm. I guess there was an emergency which took over the OR – it was a terribly long day and of course I was worried about developing an ileus again like last November. After a sleepless night the day drug on. They said if I could eat something and pass gas I could be dismissed so with that accomplished I called Hankster’s mom who picked me up at 5 and brought me home.

The dogs were delirious with excitement but I had a pillow to wrap around my midsection so they didn’t jump on me and knock me down. I slept pretty good but it was hard to roll over. Hazel sleeps at the bottom of my bed and every time I move throughout the night she growls – I hear grrrrrrr every time I move or roll over. The little princess!

So today I will rest and let Rick take over – it’s good for him to know what I do every day, 24/7, day in and day out. And tomorrow I’ll get back to the shop and fill orders for patterns. Thanks for all the well wishes. The weather is in my favor – warm enough to spend time in the porch to recuperate.

Glad you are home….. gas and all. 😂

Take it easy and heal…… enjoy the cooler temperatures. Still waiting for that here in Florida. At least the rain has stopped – 10″ in 4 days! My yard is a squishy mess. At least my present dog doesn’t like running through the water — the last one LOVED it and would come in all stinky and wet. LOL. This one will barely go out in the rain!

  2. Gloria from CC

Glad that your surgery is now in the rearview mirror and you’re back home. Relax and enjoy the best season of the year.

  3. Pamela Papazidis

Like all your other fans, happy for you that surgery went well and you are home with your pups. Take your time doing what you think needs to be done.

  4. Debra Reber

So glad your surgery went well & you are home. I can’t imagine waiting all day for surgery like you had to! So frustrating! Sending prayers for a quick recovery!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Colleen – haha! Isn’t that the most absurd sign allowing a patient to go home? But I get it.

  5. Christine in AZ

I’m happy your surgery went well and you’re home to heal. Enjoy some handworking projects or good books while you do it.
Our weather in Flagstaff has finally cooled to daytime temps of mid-70s. It is so welcome after the weirdly hot summer we had. I keep hoping my garden will produce *something*.
    Enjoy the porch!

So glad to hear that you are back home. You will heal faster being at home. Take it easy and let go. Hugs!

  7. Deb C

So glad this surgery is behind you. You’ve had it on your mind for a long time. Take care of yourself and let Rick do chores and mow. Enjoy some good books and a beer (in a few days) , your sewing room and porch. Everything you let go will be there when you feel strong again.

Hello Mary! Good to hear you are back home again! This weather is so nice lacking the humidity. I hope you will decide you deserve to take it easy and heal! Maybe you even have a couple of hummingbird feeders to watch the antics of the hummingbirds! I sure enjoy them! Today I went with a friend and a group from the senior center in Marshall went on a field trip to a printing business that moved to their new location in May. They outgrew their previous location. It was so interesting! The group was so appreciative that they took time from their busy world and showed us their digs! I was quite impressed. Then, I drove to Worthington to Crafty Corner so I could get two kits of the National Parks panel, and also I needed to select fabric for two twin-sized throws for another Mary Engelbreit panel, I have made two of these already! I love the bright, cheerful colors! Monday Larry and I went to Spencer, IA and my pedometer said I walked 4.99 miles. So, got my walking in for sure. Much smaller crowd than I have ever seen. Monday was Veterans Day and so many people thanked Larry for his service. Nothing like that in 1970-71. I hope for a good recovery for you. This is chicken noodle soup and grilled cheese weather, so enjoy! Take care.

  9. Fran Dixon

So glad that went well and you are home with the animals. Enjoy your time on the porch. I love this weather too.

  10. Judy

Glad all went well and you are home and can enjoy those clean windows. Take life easy for a few days. Anything that has to be done, someone else will do for you.

  11. Carmen M.

So glad to know you are home and recovering! Please don’t rush into getting things done, take time to recuperate and enjoy these lovely days!

  12. Pat Smith

So glad everything went well and now you deserve some porch time while Rick pretends to be you. It’s so easy to overdo it because no one is used to having you unavailable. Be unavailable!

  13. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

Hospitals, ugh. Just be glad you weren’t the emergency that took over the OR!

Glad you are home and hopefulliy, comfortable. Anything is better than being locked up in a hospital, it’s full of sick people! Take care, don’t overdo!!

  14. Sandy

Hi Mary, best wishes for a speedy recovery! Bella sleeps behind my knees, and l am trapped there until it’s time for a trip to the toilet for both of us! Rest and let Rick take care of things Mary. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  15. Chris in NW PA

Hazel and Keeper will be by your side. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  16. Lisa B

Praying for a full and speedy recovery. And don’t overdo it as you recover! It’s easy to have that tendency to want to do it all ourselves. Enjoy some downtime with your husband taking care of you.

  17. Nancy Schulz

Perfect planning for your favorite spot during surgery recovery! Thinking of you and pray all goes well. Enjoy your down time…the end use of your porch will be over before you know it. Look forward to working on American Harvest, a timely project ! Hope you have a couple good books to enjoy and entertain.

So glad the hernia surgery is over. Your lovely porch and the cooler temps has to be the best recovery combination. I’m sure Keeper and Hazel will take naps with you; they will help you heal, so you don’t leave them again.
Thanks, Mary and Take Care, 🥰

  19. Beryl BC

It’s good to know you are home and surgery went well. We’ve experienced being delayed due to some emergency with someone else. It’s not fun, but we get through it. Enjoy the porch time.

  20. Sue H

So happy to hear that the surgery is behind you. Now on to recuperation! Hugs & prayers to you and also to Rick as he tries to keep the house running along while you rest. I’m sure he’ll manage but just with the minimum. Oh, if our guys only knew the half of what we do. Enjoy your porch time!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue H – see, that’s just it – they have no clue as to what we do to keep the household running smoothly.

  21. Kris in WI

So glad to hear you are home already! Enjoy your porch time and as everyone has said, take care and don’t overdo. Prayers continue for your healing and recovery and giving thanks that all went well. Kris in WI

  22. Paula S.

Mary, I’m glad you’re home and on the mend. Yes, it will be good for Rick to do the things you do everyday all year long. Sometimes our guys need to be reminded how much we do!

  23. Karla T

Thank goodness you’re done with that and on your way recovering. I know you will want to get back to your routine, but try not to rush it. A step forward and two steps back isn’t the way you want to go 😉.
I wish you all 5he best and speedy recovery!

  24. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

I’m so glad to hear that you have your surgery behind you. What a long wait. We’re all cheering you on. Enjoy your porch. Thanks for posting the update.

  25. Alice in SW OH

Mary, so glad this surgery is behind you! Now you can rest & heal. Rick will take care of things, maybe not just like you would, but it’s always good for husbands to see how much we do to keep things running smoothly! You will enjoy recuperating in your porch room in this beautiful fall weather. Your package should arrive tomorrow according to my info. Thanks for letting us know you are safely home & all is well!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – your lovely package arrived today and Rick enjoyed two peanut clusters after supper. I just didn’t dare have one yet – I don’t think my stomach can handle it but by the weekend it will. Lovely silver items, too. Thank you, Alice – hugs to Boots!

      1. Alice in SW OH

Oh good Mary, it arrived a day early! The silver things my mother received for showing Cocker Spaniels many years ago. I was probably 8-10 & I’m 80 now, so just a few years ago.😊 Boots is his usual puppy self. Spent a good 10 minutes running zoomies through the house! This was a bit after he stole Ron’s piece of chocolate! We’ll see if it makes him sick! This pup is fast as greased lightening!! So happy you’re home & surgery went well! Take care! Your home looks so pretty in the pictures!

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – I put the silver saucers to work under my plants and they look so nice! Becky was here and I gave her a peanut cluster – right away she said “this person used real chocolate!” So this chocolate that you used made a big impact on Becky! Thank you so much.

  26. Teresa, soon to be from Maple Ridge, BC (formerly from Port Coquitlam)

So glad your surgery is over and you are home. Here’s hoping to a speedy recovery. Don’t over do it as some of us do. lol. We are moving in two days, my son in law reminded me that the knee I injured is feeling really good now so I am not to over do it this weekend. What a sweetie that he is worried about me.
Enjoy your porch day today and read a good book so you can relax.

  27. Ginger S in New Hampshire

Long day Mary! So happy you are home and recovery is underway. Jo of Jo’s country Junction had her surgery yesterday also. She too is on the road to recovery. Sending healing thoughts and hope you have a speedy recovery.

  28. Lynn in Scottsdale, AZ

So happy all went well with your surgery, and you are home.

Your porch is the perfect place to heal.

    You are in our prayers.

  29. Des

Mary, So happy that you’re home in your happy place & I’m sure all of your pets agree. I think waiting for surgery is very nerve wracking. I worked in an OR for the last 18 years of my career & I always felt sorry for the patients who got bumped from the schedule due to emergencies. Thanks for the laugh about your restless night & all of the Hazel grrs you had to endure. My first JRT Chester always grrred if we moved during the night & interrupted his beauty sleep.

  30. Bobby Sutton

You’ve been through a lot in the past year… you and Rick. Hope you’ll feel good as new quickly now that the surgery is behind you.
I had to laugh about Hazel grrrrrr in bed. We had a pup who dis the same, but why not spoil our fur babies!

You now have a good reason to relax, sit, and read or sew! Bobby in Maryland

  31. Sara in indiana

Very glad your surgery is over and that you are home where you can do as much or little as you feel like, without being confined to a hospital room. If you are like me, it’s hard to just sit still (unless I’m reading a good book) without thinking about a million things I want to do or have to do. What will you do to relax on your porch? It looks wonderful—so bright and cozy.

  32. Dorothy from chicago

Glad your surgery is behind you and you are on the way to recovery. Be kind to yourself and let hubby take care of you as you rest and enjoy your fur babies and the lovely weather.

  33. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, welcome home! I know your furry friends are delighted! Enjoy a peaceful day in your porch with all the sparkling windows.

  34. Susan in VA

Happy to hear you’re home and recovering. Don’t overdo it. Things that need doing will still be there when you’re better.
I’m having my right hip replaced on the 16th. I’ve been hobbling around for nearly a year. It will be a relief to get it done. The doctor said the left hip isn’t far behind it, but it doesn’t hurt yet. Hope things are “normal” for a little bit before I have to get the other done!
    Take care!

  35. sheryl harrison

Sending prayers for a quick recovery. I got a chuckle out of some of the husband comments. Just remember your slogan from a month ago (or whenever)…”I don’t care!”

  36. Kim from Wi

So glad that you are home and the surgery is behind you. It sounds like a miserable day of waiting. Enjoy your porch and the fall weather. Mending takes time, be patient

Sending prayers for a speedy recovery with no “bumps in the recovery road”. Don’t overdo, just take time to relax and heal well. Enjoy these fall days on the beautiful porch with a good book and a glass of iced tea.

Mary glad you are home and wishing you a speedy recovery. Don’t over do it. I know we all say that but take heart and listen to us. It’s good for hubby to do the things they take for granted that we do. My hubby didn’t realize how much work went into cleaning till he had to do it all. He does help me now and we work together to get the cleaning done.
Lots of fall clean up being done here.

My husband and I are heading to IL on Friday for the funeral of his last aunt. She just turned 95 in July. She has had a long, good life.
    Take care, Mary.

Wishing you a speedy recovery! Rick may know what you do but if he is anything like my husband-he won’t do it right or remotely the same way!
