HOT! 7-25-26

Too hot to work outside – even Dottie and Sarah stayed in the barn with a fan. I worked in the shop packaging up Pam cards so they’ll be ready to send out when I get your request. I also came across some Martingale patterns that I should give to somebody.

So about 4 I took the dogs for a run on the trail because they been stuck inside all day and what happens? (Just kill me now!) Hazel discovers a woodchuck in a fallen tree that’s hollow until the end where the woodchuck is cornered, poor thing. She is barking and trying to dig closer. Who is going to win? At this point I have torn up my leg again even though I actually put on coveralls to save it.

I have gone out there numerous times and crawled around, through and up and down the brush pile she’s in. Stinging nettles everywhere!! I was so hot I couldn’t even get my sneakers on so I was wearing flip flops. Sigh. The game started before I even got to the house. My hair is dripping wet and I am going to have to just wait her out. What a little shithead!

Now it’s nearly dark and I’m going to the barn to count the chickens – I hope they’re all home.

Today I hung Folksy Chickens in the porch – from our very first book On Behalf of Chickens which notably is the only book we’ve ever written without a single known mistake. Unbelievable, huh?

And yes, this pattern is available for sale for the usual $5 and a SASE. Cash or check only. Chickens were appliquéd back when my fingers actually worked.

And to follow up on the farm quilt by McKenna Ryan, I did a couple small projects from Storybook Farm.

Later

It is now 10:40 and Hazel is in the house – about 10:30 I went out back and called her from the landing on the second floor of the Barn in the Back. And there was no barking which scared me. I went back to the house and there she was!!! Eating her supper like nothing was wrong at all.

Once again, I can’t make this stuff up. I need a drink.

Oh Mary, I love reading about the Hazel Adventures! She is something else!!! I think a book about Hazel might need to be your next project. love those quilts!
Hope all are staying well cool in this HOT weather, we are headed to 100+ for the next week or so. I HATE the heat!
I can hardly wait to hear if the woodchuck escaped!

Finally catching up on blog posts after having way too much to do.

I have to tell my ground hog story now – it is a second hand account because I was a toddler and I don’t remember it at all! I was out in our farm backyard (it was the ’50s so – free ranging) and I apparently cornered a ground hog in the corner of our house entry and was attempting to pet it – I guess I thought it was a dog. Of course it bit me so my parents had to trap it and feed it while it lived in our garage for 10 days or until it was deemed not rabid. I sometimes wonder how I lived thru childhood lol. Sherry W.

Sherry – oh, for cryin out loud! I always say you can’t make this stuff up!!! It’s a wonder we lived to adulthood, isn’t it?

Oh, that Hazel. Calling her names to fit the occasion. I agree. Her middle name should be something like “drama, drama”. She is such a little devil. Glad she is safe and hydrated.

Love your chicken quilt & the McKenna Ryan pieces, too! Very nice job on all of them! Hazel…..it’s a good thing you love her! Since she’s a JRT this is just what she does, one adventure after another. I do hope you didn’t injure yourself too bad, Mary! Preston’s owners just came to get him a while ago, so now Boots doesn’t know what to do with himself. These two pups had the best time playing together! We have the lake house until next Friday & I hope to finish my book I downloaded from the library & do a bit of sewing. When I get home I will be busy putting everything back in its place after the water line break (fixed) & the new flooring install. Have a good week everyone.

Alice – you’re looking at a big job when to get home. Poor doggies – they already miss each other. Why don’t you adopt a little pal for Boots?????

Time for ICED TEA . You certainly deserve it and Hazel is just being Hazel. It’s a good thing you love her and she is cute or else!
    Try to stay cool

  6. Becky in DM

I so agree with Sandy you need to write a book about Hazel….work that into your busy schedule. HA! hope that your legs are too beat up. I would have beers on ice, it this heat I cant get stuff cold enough. I went to church and now I’m going to sew, sew, sew. Love the Folksy Chicken. The next 2 days the heat index is going to be in the 100’s. Keep cool. Love the blog.

Brother, it’s HOT here too!!! It’s noon and 99 degrees. I’m going to my sewing room.
Your leg wound is taking its sweet time to heal. I guess being an extremity and some age, everything takes longer to heal.
There is a group of us that meet at a neighbors house to embroider, knitting, or any other hand work. Our delightful host makes a fantastic dessert. Last week we had homemade chocolate pudding and Irish cream cookies. She is diabetic, but still loves to bake. So we indulged her.

You and Hazel sure know how to build suspense—waiting on pins and needles (ha!) for your next blog post to find out how your leg fared and how Hazel is (and the woodchuck). I really winced when you said there were stinging nettles—ouch, ouch, ouch! Love the chicken quilt and the McKenna Ryan quilts. Hope today is more calm for you.

Time to take a break from green bean canning & tell you my Boone vs groundhog story. We have a large 3 season porch where the dogs loved to spend time while we were at work. One day I came home to the sound of muffled barks around the back of my house. When I investigated I found the bottom door panel ripped apart & no Boone. He was under the deck up against the concrete block wall where he had a groundhog cornered. He was nipping & biting at the poor thing and being a JRT he would not budge. I called Tom at work & told him to come home immediately after work and made sure he had a crowbar. Needless to say he had to pry up 3 or 4 boards before he could grab Boone. As you know with your Hazel adventures life with a JRT is never boring. Have a drink on me! And I loved your farm quilts. Des
    PS. The groundhog got away

Thank you for being normal! I love it and what you are, which is no pretense.

Heck, I need a drink after imagining all that you went through! For that reason alone, I could never have a JRT! They are cute as buttons though. Love the quilts that you hung, the Storybook Farm ones are beautiful and the Folksy Chickens – so nice! We are lucky, today it’s just 73 degrees – perfect in my opinion. Good sleeping weather but I’m sure that will change as the heat wave comes across the country. We are pretty close to the ocean so have a nice sea breeze. The sky is so blue today. Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone! Jan in MA

Hot days equal quilting days. Church this morning, then I am in for the rest of the day.
I made 8 more potholders yesterday for our church sale. Will switch up today and do something different.
Froze 4 big bags of corn yesterday. Such a treat in the winter to have sweet corn!
Hugs to Hazel from Elliott. Little stinker ..

    1. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

Diana, what do you do to freeze the corn? Do you cut the raw corn off the cobs or do you cook them first? I’ve never frozen corn and would like to try. It’s probably so much better than buying canned corn.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – I will give you the very best frozen corn recipe you’ll ever eat – I’ll post the recipe tomorrow or send it if I remember. And sooooo easy – you’ll never buy canned corn again.

        1. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

Thank you Mary. That would be awesome. Right now the corn here is so good and it’s so much cheaper when you buy by the dozen but I really done want to eat corn six days in a row. So I could buy some and have corn one night and freeze the rest. It would be so nice to have it in the winter.

          Thanks again Mary.

What an exciting day!! Never a dull moment at your farm. Do you think Hazel finally gave up or?

Another scorcher today for us. We might hit 100 today and/or tomorrow! So I am inside of course and it is a laundry day. Might be able to sneak in a few minutes in the sewing room. And Mary, you should not be out there in this heat except for church. My boss for the day! Ha

  14. Donna Sproston

I hope the drink was a stiff one! No, you can’t make this stuff up! I spent the day holding a cat on my lap and playing with quilt squares. Your heat is arriving in Wisconsin today. Our grass looks like August, and we are in need of rain. I feel for those who are dealing with flood waters.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna – and our grass is so long and green this year thanks to all that rain – it’s very hot but I really need to mow by the barn

  15. Sandy McPherson

Hi Mary, you can’t make this up! Time to write a book about Hazel and all the mischief she gets up to on the farm! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Giirrrll, I would have 2 drinks in bed! Love the other McKenna blocks too! And the chicken quilt! ❤️
