It’s all about the lights! 11-11-25

From Cindy in Kansas:

WOW!

I’ve walked out to the road three times tonight and haven’t seen a thing. I am so disappointed.

Becky saw this with her night setting:

This is all I’m seeing tonight:

Recognize my upholstery fabric? A reader bought this bag at a quilt show over 45 years ago!!! She said the bag was even pricey then but I see she still has it!

Always remember that you’re unique – just like everyone else!

The sky looked normal to my naked eye but after taking a photo with my cell phone in night mode, the lights appeared in the photo. I saw beautiful reds, and just a bit of green in one.

The local news last has several pictures and videos of the lights last night. Fantastic.
Loretta had her surgery yesterday, so I was keeping a close eye on her last night. She is so much better today, we will look tonight. Her mouth is still a little swollen, she has a wrap on her leg from the IV and will NOT let me touch that leg. In due time, she will be like a puppy again.
    Cherish that upholstery fabric.
On the other side of life…my tractor’s clutch wire broke. I found an older mechanic that fixed it. I didn’t know it had a clutch! I’ve never depressed that petal!! I did learn the hydraulics lower the blades so I can mow the field shorter around the barn and fence. My “users manual” (husband) is no longer here. Now that summer is over, I’ll have to figure out how to remove the mower deck and attach the snow auger. I really need my users manual.

Jo – hug Loretta for me! Of course she doesn’t want you to touch that leg!! I wouldn’t know how to put an auger on a tractor. I could probably operate it but put it on? Nope. So how did the tractor work without using the clutch?

Love seeing your night view of your cats. I was wondering how Mortie’s eye is doing. You posted a picture of her a couple of days ago and her eye was closed up. I love all of your pets and how special you treat them.

We had a nice display of Northern Lights here in MA as well! My friend said what she saw outside was better than the ones she saw in Iceland! Just amazing. Be sure to take a photo, Mary, sometimes you can’t see them with the naked eye. I love the cat pictures, so glad that Tim is back! Jan in MA

Jan makes an important point. Direct that camera to the night sky, north, northeast. I don’t know how to do a long exposure, but that is recommended as well. “Night view” is automatic on most devices. Just looking through the viewfinder showed us a great view of the changing bursts, about every half hour. It seemed to dissipate and then it came back.

I lived in AK for 35 yrs so… I remember as a child living in Maine my dad waking me up to see them. I loved how they were like ribbons dancing in the sky in AK. When it was bitter cold in Fairbanks was when they seemed to be most vivid.

Busy day today and yes it’s all about quilting. For one, I have a meeting with my UFO Club. We are done for the yr and I did all my listed UFOs and made my list of 6 for the new yr starting today. We will roll the dice…

I didn’t see any because I was 😴. We were in Michigan for a week to attend grandparents day and came home Monday night. We got caught in the air traffic nightmare of delayed and cancelled flights! We landed in SF at midnight and got home at 1 am. Had a wonderful time.

My d-i-l says the northern lights flare in 30 minutes cycles, then fade off until the next flare time. She sent me a great picture, but by the time we got into a rural area, they were pretty much gone. By the time we got home, she texted they were showing their colors again, but too much city lights to see very well. Best seen by using your camera on your phone with no flash. Seems strange doesn’t it – night picture and no flash? I was also raised in ND and we saw them frequently when I was a kid – they were very vivid.

We saw them here without a camera. First they were straight north, then faded away. Then we could see them in the northeast. For a short time they were across the north sky from west to east. Wow! That’s the first time I’ve seen them here. We used to see them when combining in North Dakota and they were amazing-colors from red to purple to green. And so close to the ground you felt like you could walk up to them. I’m sure their view tonight was really good.

There are consistent reports if the sky is somewhat clear that they will again be visible Wednesday 7pm to 11pm or longer November 12 2025. One science guy I just watched confirmed the readings represent a “G5” level. “NOAA measures geomagnetic storms on a scale of 1 to 5, with G1 storms considered “mild” and G5 storms dubbed “extreme.””

There is a website called liveScience.
“Solar flares occur when tangled magnetic-field lines on the sun violently snap back into place. Some flares may be accompanied by CMEs — fast-moving blobs of plasma that can take several days to reach Earth, if Earth happens to be within the firing line. Upon hitting Earth, CMEs can cause major disturbances in Earth’s magnetic field known as geomagnetic storms, resulting in technological malfunctions and widespread auroras. “

I’m disappointed too when I can’t see them with the naked eye. But I took a couple pictures and they show up there..

    Mary,
Go outside with your phone’s camera and look to the northwest and you should see the northern lights.
Good luck! They’re beautiful. We’re seeing them in mid-Missouri so you should be seeing them, too.

Mary Beth – well, that explains a lot – I was looking north/northeast. I can’t see to the northwest because of our grove. I would have had to drive to the highway to look west. Maybe tonight.

My nephew’s wife in western Ohio got some photos of it – I think it’s too cloudy where I live…
    Nice cat photos!!

If you put your phone on night setting & then take a picture you will see it. Some people have been able to see it just looking at the sky. I took a few & my colors aren’t as bright as others but it’s weird to not see it until you look at the picture. I would have loved to stay out longer than I did but I had a cat that kept climbing up my leg & getting in my way!
