Winds 30 mph with gusts to 40+ makes life pretty darn miserable. Can’t have the dog door open, can’t have the chicken door open, can’t even walk outside – now it’s raining a bit, too, but will it even hit the ground? Ha! No yard work or gardening happening here – at least in the country – maybe in town?
So you’d think I’d have plenty of time to sew, right? Here’s a pile of leftover strips that could turn into something.

And I loved Rose’s quilt with 3” blocks so I made 5. I have a full tub of 30’s fabric which I don’t even really like very much but I decided I should use some of it anyway.

There’s no reason for me to push myself to finish anything – I just need to sew in the evenings. And I’m so sick of the Georgetown Circle blocks. I’m easily bored. Sigh.
You remember all those parking pictures I post? The ones who park across the lines? That’s going to be me. Somebody banged their car door into Red’s driver door. Now I understand why they park so arrogantly. Just another reason to order everything from Amazon.

Mary, get some refrigerator soda boxes for your van. They will neutralize the skunk order without a mess to clean up.
I try to find a parking place on the ends, they are usually bigger and I can get real close to the curb. I detest when my car gets bumped by a door.
For fun today at gym group, I ask if any body ever had a house payment of 2 digits? My first house payment was 2 digits. That’s less that $100/ month!! Minimum wage was $1.60/hr.
A lot of us were 3 digits. And the youngsters have 4 digit house payments.
Am I glad I don’t have a house payment today.
Thirty mph winds is wild. Our wind has been in the mid twenties with 30 gusts. The squirrels knocked off our rain gauge and broke it, so I don’t know how much rain we have had.
I like your five little blocks. 30’s fabric makes cute square newborn baby quilts-mostly girl quilts.
Take Care, Mary 🥰
I’m so sorry about little red. Makes me angry that people are so careless. I try to park away from others, too. Until I can’t walk any more, I will park way away. That was some story about the anesthetized cat! Wow! My hubby and I are getting over some awful bug we caught last week. We made it all the way through COVID and now we get this crud. It’s really awful. I couldn’t sleep for 5 nights because I couldn’t breathe if I wasn’t sitting up. We are both better but not completely over it. I think we are through the worst of it. I love the tiny blocks you made.
It’s raining lightly here in SW Ohio, but was raining much harder earlier. It’s supposed to rain most of the day. I will be sewing most of the day as I have a baby quilt to finish for a shower on Sunday for Ron’s granddaughter. I buy panels & free motion quilt around the characters & have been using flannel on the back for several years. When Ron & I were in FL in Feb we met a younger couple at church. Like Ron he’s a retired Marine, but still working on the base in PCB. These two guys decided it would be fun to meet half way between FL & OH. At the end of Aug we will be meeting at Paris Island, SC to tour the base. James has already made reservations for us! It’s been 75 yrs since Ron has been back there. He was 17 when he did his basic there. He’ll be 92 in July. Tomorrow Boots has a play date with my friend’s dog. We’re doing outside meet & greet & hope these two boys do better than the last time! Boots is just a feisty pup & the other pretty one laid back & wasn’t interested in wrestling! Mary, so sorry about Little Red’s door. We have to be super careful on windy days! Is it something that can be pulled out with a plunger?
I’m sorry about your car door. Folks don’t realize how powerful those winds can be; they can tear the door right out of your hands!
I think your 30s blocks are so sweet. I can’t wait to see what your finished project looks like!
I love your 30’s blocks. I just recently finished two baby quilts using 30’s prints. I haven’t sent pictures as would like to take them outside but the weather hasn’t cooperated. We had and inch of rain yesterday and last night. We were so dry, so very thankful. I feel for those in Iowa that recieved up to 5″ of rain. That is too much!
I go back to my surgeon today and will get another steroid shot in my eyelid to help break up the scar tissue. The shot he gave me over two weeks ago under my eye has gotten much better, so hope this shot will also help with the swelling.
It is a cool 58* here today. We could get some showers again today according to the weatherman.
We had almost 4 1/2 inches of rain overnight just north of Des Moines! Still raining lightly and supposed to all morning. This weather gives me a chance to work on my nieces wedding quilt. Not a complicated pattern, but I’ve sewn so many easy projects lately, I’m finding my brain being taxed.
Last week of school for my grandkids, so they will be here days all summer.
Mammogram today, orthopedic dr tomorrow. Getting things out of the way before kids are here all the time. I thought when I retired, life would slow down. Not so much….
Diana – I hate appointment days! You’ve got a busy summer ahead with kids to feed and entertain every day. Retirement is a different kind of busy.
So sorry to hear about little red getting a dent. My son has one of those car/trucks also, so he parks way away from others just so it doesn’t get hit. Is your other car ‘deskunked’ yet? I’m sure it will need professional help. Lately, I have been trying to get the mojo to get back to several unfinished projects but just decided to hem up a bunch of hubby’s pants – no fun but needed. Our weather is crummy like others so I Just stay inside and keep myself busy. I’m happy to hear others saying they also love “The Quilters”. It sure made me feel good.
Yesterday, the news had a report about a cat that was at the vets for surgery with anesthetics and all. He got loose and walked 3 miles through neighborhoods, across two busy roads and made it home so he could sleep in his favorite chair.
A pre-op doctors’ appointment is on my list today. I’ll be getting a knee replacement on June 2 so there’s a lot to prepare. I think I’ll as my doctor if, as long as I’ll be under, why doesn’t he fix my shoulder at the same time. Maybe not!
I sure wish the rains would go north and put the fires out in northern Minnesota.
Have a good day everyone.
Janet – knee replacement, huh? You’ll do great – do your therapy religiously and use your ice machine. My van still has a faint odor but it’s getting better as is Keeper but until he doesn’t smell anymore I won’t get my van detailed. Ugh, And that’s why I was driving Red – the smelly van. Oh, that cat!! I’ll bet his owners nearly flipped when he showed up at home!
Love those little 30’s blocks! Now I’ll have to look back to find the quilt that’s inspiring them. So sorry about Red’s little boo-boo. That’s why I park far away from other cars.
I’m still in NC at cooking class and it’s rained the last 2 days for part of the afternoon, which makes the evening time muggy. Everything is so green and lush here and I love seeing the smokey views of the mountains in the early mornings. Class is going well, and we are learning a lot about the different spices used in Indian food. Made 2 main dishes, Naan bread, rice and a dessert. A very full day.
Kim – I love that you continue to take these cooking schools with your daughter in NC. Maybe you can answer my question about naan bread as I was going to do some research into it. I know many make personal pizzas for themselves using it. Why is naan bread that much more expensive than regular pizza dough? Is it made a special way or with different flour? Is it healthier?
Thanks for any answers as I do enjoy hearing what others are cooking or eating as trends peak my interest in various foods.
Kim – do you plan to make these dishes when you get home? Or are these cooking classes just entertainment?
Argh 😡about Red’s driver door getting dented!! So sorry that happened.
Love how you said you don’t have to push to finish anything just enjoy sewing – at this point in my life I love that thinking! We need to enjoy the journey
Time for a little positive TV. The Quilters is a short documentary on Netflix about men in a high security prison who make quilts for kids in foster care. I each quilt is made specifically for a certain child and their names are put on the quilt. I will definitely watch this show more than once.
I chuckled at your comment Mary regarding wind speed. Those speeds for us in Wyoming are a breeze. We’ve had pretty steady 40 mph winds with gusts 50+. We did get a little rain on Saturday. Probably about 2 tenths. I’m watering my large evergreen trees because they’re suffering in the dry wind. I already lost one tree. I bought a few perennials to plant but need to wait for a calmer, warmer day. Sewing has been on a back burner for a while. I’m still able to get some cross-stitching done every day.
Martha – do you have windbreaks? I think the wind is more annoying than a rainy day – we have no windbreak on the south and east. We attributed these winds to global warming – guess I was wrong. Today is better and it’s been raining lightly throughout the night – we need it badly.
Mary, we do have wind breaks. They are designed (planted) to drift snow too. This winter and spring, we have had more wind than snow!! I agree, I think the weather change can be attributed to global warming. We have very destructive bugs because it no longer gets cold enough and stays cold long enough to control them in the winter.
Oh, yes, the wind does blow in Wyoming!! It reminds me of the description I read many years ago. Some places have a wind sock to measure the wind. In Wyoming it is a chain nailed to the top of a fence post. If the chain is straight out, that’s a good wind. If a link is missing from the end of the chain, it is a really strong wind. And it’s the truth!!
Betty in Rapid City
Today was rainy this afternoon-48• chilly! Plus whenI went to the Y today for my exercise class it was raining and I did not have my umbrella with me. I had to go to the grocery store and wow when I left there it was really pouring and thunder and lightning as well. At 3:00 today we had .75” in our rain gauge. More coming. I wish I had gotten all my gardens weeded, but it will wait. I am working on side #4 on my sampler quilt. When I get done I shall send a photo.I have stuff lined up in anticipation of completion! This will be in the built and garden show non Tracy in July this year! Stay dry and warm we have had the heat on for several days. It was 90* one day and 43* the next. Only in Minnesota.
I had to laugh when you said you were sewing with 30’s prints and you didn’t even like them! They are my favorite. I ran across 3 bags of 30’s print scraps that I bought at a flea market and forgot about and realized I had found the perfect quilt pattern for them just a few days earlier. 2.5″ tumblers raw appliqued to a 6.5″ X 2.5″ strip. Easy peasy and perfect for a sewing visit with a friend.
I have been really careful with opening car doors during these winds we have been having. I got a nasty dent in my car door a few years back when the wind caught someone’s door and slammed it into my car. I was thankful they told me about it but still noting much could be done about it. Still it is annoying when your car gets dented.
