The new box spring arrived today – it was a bit of a nightmare in that I didn’t have the mattress off the original box spring when the delivery guys arrived. No, I was told they were not allowed to help – liability issues. I drug the mattress off and then they mentioned that they didn’t know if the first box spring would go down the stairs. It got up there, didn’t it? My shoulders were already aching from PT earlier in the day.
I remember the days when women would carry sewing machines across the yard to class along with a huge bag of fabric and rulers. Men always need/want to park beside the house to bring in a toolbelt. I think you understand my point here.
So it’s been a day. No sign of Tim. We’re all having a case of “January”, I think. If I were the type to have an excess of alcohol, tonight would be the night.

It’s made it a bit difficult with this weather we’re having to get out and enjoy the outdoors. It’s too cold with wind chills below zero. Sun could be out but the next minute it’s a white out with snow squalls which I drove in this morning for a routine doctors appt and a pick up for crochet cotton to tie quilts our church makes for the local dialysis center.
But honestly this is the time I do like to sew more without outdoor interruptions like summer brings me. Hang in there and make the best of this rotten weather.
Funny yes there are days that could be a almost tempting
That’s really lame the delivery men refused to actually do all the steps of delivering your box spring; I think set up is considered part of delivery. We certainly had better service than that the last time we bought a new mattress from our local mattress store. The delivery man kindly removed the oldest, worn out mattress from the overflow guest bed in my upstairs sewing room, moved the next oldest, still in good shape, mattress from the downstairs guest room to the bed upstairs, and placed the new mattress on the downstairs guest bed. He was very nice about it too. Of course that was about 7-8 years ago. Maybe things have changed.
Sorry you had to stress your shoulder again.
I’m trying to get rid of a cold. I’m dragging today, after coughing most of the night. Ugh. Maybe I’ll settle in for some hand quilting after doing a few chores.
Sharon – you had the ultimate delivery man!!! I am still reeling and ranting about yesterday’s delivery! And he said to his supervisor – she’s being rude to me!
Oh my! Deliveries! I always tell myself to play the “Dumb Blonde”, but then I just can’t help myself LOL We have lived all over the world with a lot of children and pets and STUFF, and if there is one thing I can do, it’s figure out how to get things from one place to another. But this one time, I was defeated …
We lived in Germany for a few years in a very narrow but very tall ancient townhouse; taxes were based on road frontage, so they were built to be very narrow. There were 5 floors with 88 steps from the front door to the top floor, and I was very unsure how we were going to get moved in. Talk about a StairMaster Derriere… because the laundry hookups were in the basement (17 steps down from the front door) and the kitchen was ON THE 4TH FLOOR. WHO DOES THAT?
The moving company hired Russian men to do the actual moving work; I don’t understand much Russian. They took one look at the building, made a phone call, and went across the street to the bar. Completely befuddled, I waited and watched. About an hour later, a machine showed up. It was sort of like a conveyor belt, but it had a flat platform with no side railings. Those almost-very-drunk men put furniture, boxes AND A REFRIGERATOR on the platform, and it just shot straight up to the 5th floor window. The men removed the window ( HOW? ) and unloaded the platform. You just haven’t experienced terror until you have seen a refrigerator shoot 50+ feet up into the air!
Susan, what a story!!! This was a really good one to read this morning!!
Susan! No, I can’t imagine a frig shooting up 50’ – what a story – did you ever figure out how they did that?
I was too scared to watch! 🙂
How maddening! When I redid my son’s old bedroom into a new sewing room, I was able to finally order a sewing desk from Tracey’s Tables. I ordered the double pedestal desk, not their largest, but pretty big. The room is a former attic space above the garage, accessible from inside, BUT. To deliver the desk, it was going to be in the front door, up the stairs, right angle turn and 2 more steps to the landing. Around the stair rail with less than 3 feet of floor space and immediate right angle turn onto a narrow balcony through the narrower-than-standard door into the room. We’ve carried furniture up there but nothing that big, and it wasn’t fun. They called me to let me know they’d be delivering on Thursday of the following week and I was dismayed because I was going to be at our annual retreat in Shipshewana—way too far to drive home to oversee the process. I described the situation and they said “no problem “. Left DH in charge, with reservations.
I called home the evening it was to be delivered to ask if it was there yet. DH said, yes, it’s here and I asked how long it took. Bill said it took 6 or 7 minutes for them to get it up the stairs, a few minutes to get it set up, and they were on their way! Talk about professionals! This small company is owned by Mike and Tracey Kowalski? Kotlarski? Can’t remember—in Stratford, Wisconsin. They make sewing and cutting tables to your order and they deliver everything they make themselves, with no shipping or delivery charges. I love my table and can’t say enough good things about their quality and customer service. There a few of these companies left!
Ha I went through the same thing , delivery men got here and looked up the steps and said , it won’t go , I said the one up there got up there , well this one won’t , so I told them take it back . Went to another store and bought one in a box . I was assured if we didn’t like bring it back , ha another joke it was in a box we couldn’t have gotten it back in that box no matter what we did . I agree with the laziness . We have 10 inches of snow where are all the kids that used to go from door to door wanting to shovel your driveway or walks ?
For over thirty years we lived in a big house built in 1900. It had a staircase that doubled back on itself. For the box springs for beds on that floor we had to remove the double hung windows, then bring them up on the porch roof and through the window openings. Challenging. I recently had a refrigerator delivered to my home. I had a jar of jam that I could not open even with the aid of my Jar Key. I asked one of the nice young men if he could open it and he was happy to do so. Good service!
I’d like to bring my king-sized bottle of white Zin and raise a glass with you. Sometimes I think I’d do well in an advisory position with deliverymen, as I can almost always figure out a way to get furniture through any obstacle. Maybe they should watch the Friends episode where Ross is yelling “Pivot!!”
Linda – I remember Pivot well – hilarious!! Anytime you can figure out how to share that bottle of wine, let me know.
Mary, I don’t think liability is the issue with the delivery with a mattress I think-its still a l word Laziness-what is the least they can do!!!!! Lots of younger people now are not taught to really work!! Well thats my rant for the day! Hope your shoulder isn’t overworked. Have a good day.
Dee – I wrote an original “vent” post but left it as a draft – it was just too vile to post but I felt better writing it.
I am very surprised at the furniture delivery men. My dad owned a furniture & carpet business for many years. My husband started out on the delivery truck & they always took the old mattresses & box springs off the frame, loaded them on the truck & hauled them away. I guess it’s 1) the lack of customer service & 2) people will sue over the least little thing anymore. Sad .
I used to ask my husband if he thought I was is stevedore? We had a staircase like that and I always wondered why they thought something couldn’t come down when it had gotten up? I told one guy “house wasn’t built around the bed”
The last mattress came rolled up in a box. That was an adventure.
I once got lost in country before GPS and stopped at a gas station (this was back several years) and asked “ how do I get to XYZ? He said you can’t get there from here and I said I got here from there’. His reply “then it beats me”. Thanked him drove down the road about a mile and there was the sign for where I was asking. The wonders of men
Don’t overdo that shoulder and enjoy your new mattress
I’m sorry you had to go through that. I sure hope there wasn’t a delivery charge. I would let the owners know and seriously hope you don’t buy anything there again. It best give you a good night’s sleep! I’m glad January is about over! We still have month or two of cold I went out for the first time today in over a week! I’m in for another week but it is supposed to be in the 20′ s next week!!@ i do have a violet that has it’s first bud¡! Have good night! Take some Tylenol and go bed!<
Can relate to that Mary. A few years ago I bought a large carpet square and had to argue to have it taken up the stairs, by two rather hefty men. I couldn’t lift it but they were going to leave it at the foot of the stairs. Customer service.
I do understand that company’s have to protect their workers from hurting themselves, but if delivery is part of the service….
Hope your aches are less after a comfortable night’s sleep.
I wish I could raise a glass with you! Things tend to get a bit easier with a bit of wine 🍷.
I am uneasy about a delivery. I bought a singer 301 from Phoenix and still waiting on delivery. The icy storm has delayed! I’m so excited to get it.
Enjoy your new bed! Hugs 🤗
Oh Pamela! You will love your 301! I bought one a few years ago and love it!
Hey! I just found your comment tonight. My 301 arrived Thursday afternoon. The seller just packed everything in the case without padding but it all looks ok, no damage. It was in the best condition I could find, happy to get it 😻
