Q is for Quilt, 5-9-25

Today I went to Pre K at Clear Lake Classical school where they were learning about the letter Q which stands for queen, quarter and quilt!

I took a big armful of quilts – mostly picture quilts that I thought they might like.

Here is Mrs. Josten and her Pre K class.

They asked me to stay for show and tell.

They thought the bullseye quilt was very snuggly. What did I take away from this presentation? I would not be a very good pre K teacher. Mrs. Josten had the patience of Job.

Hank visited this afternoon while his mom made 15 dozen cupcakes for graduation.

I planted a few flowers – two pots worth – haha! Soon I’ll start moving my houseplants outside for the next few months where they’ll thrive.

Funeral tomorrow morning – Fever game in the afternoon that I don’t think I can get. Grrrr.

As a former Kindergarten teacher, I LOVE you taking and sharing your quilts for “Q” so sweet!
    Hank in the pool!!! 💜

Thanks for sharing your visit to the school. I am sure the kids all had stories to tell about your visit. My granddaughters always like to share about the “extra stuff” that happens with their school day.

Locally, “The Op Shop” would be referring to Kokomo Opalescent Glass. It is a glass manufacturer in Kokomo, Indiana, and they have a local shop and online store. It is an interesting place to tour. You can see them moving molten glass from the furnace to the tray where it is rolled, cooled, and cut to size. Not really cut, but scored and broken. You get to walk through the storage area. We saw crates being packed for shipment. Very interesting.

Good job on taking quilts to school, Mary. You probably impressed several future quilters during your visit.
I worked in a school office in our small town; I only worked during the school year and had summers off-great mom job!
    Thanks, Mary. 🥰

Loved the pics of you and the pre-k class. My great niece took her baby quilt to kindergarten show and tell when the letter of the day was Q. It was one I made for her. She was very proud of it.
When I saw Hank in that pool I thought….Brrr! Hose water is so cold.
My husband and I went to our place up north for one night, coming home this morning. We had a family gathering for my mom’s side of the family. The first family gathering since my mom and her older sister passed. They typically had a Mother’s Day gathering and this year was strange without them. But life goes on.
I made my husband clean the garage while we were up there. I think he was happy to get home! He had six..SIX…pair of hunting boots and two pair of old old tennis shoes in the garage. Needless to say, he does not have them all anymore. And two of them were his dads boots and he passed away 30 years ago and they aren’t my husbands size! They were donated and can now live in someone else’s garage! We had a nice bonfire and the stars were beautiful in the sky.
Take care and happy Mother’s Day! 🌻

If I were the one making that many cupcakes, my (fictional) dog would be with you for a very long time! I hat making cupcakes. They are messy, dough blobs stick to the pan and burn. I don’t like making cookies either. They are too futzy. Sounds like I don’t like baking; but, I do. I just make cakes and bars. My entire allotment of futzy is completely used up in quilting. Happy Mother’s Day on b behalf of all those furry, feathered, and otherwise covered lovies you so care for indoors and out. If they could read a calendar, I am quite sure you would be overwhelmed with extra licks, rubs, lap sits, and nose bumps.

Graduation ceremonies and parties! I’m ready to relax! Enough pulled pork for a while! It’s great but after about so many parties, I am done!

Hi Mary, just about at the end of the drying out process after the flood, lots of changes made. Sofa to sallies (op shop), along with lots of other things, it looks spacious now.Found my travel iron and other things l thought was lost in move 3 years ago! Mother’s day, so off with family for lunch at local Cafe, beautiful weather. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Sandy – so happy to hear the clean up is nearly finished so you can get on with your everyday life – and look at the things you found!

    2. Cynthia in Minnesota

Sandy, did you change from a sofa to a Sally? I looked up what it is.. The Sally is a hand-crafted, New Zealand made sofa in chair, 2-, 2.5- and 3-seat variants. Available in your choice of fabric. what did you select?! It is amazing what one can find when we have to go thru things we have stashed away!

      1. Cynthia in Minnesota

Sandy and Nary, it is also this: New Zealand, an “op shop” is a term for a thrift store or charity shop, which sells donated goods to raise money for charitable organizations. These shops are a type of social enterprise, offering a way for people to buy used items at affordable prices while supporting a charitable cause. I did not understand the op shop part until after I posted my first message. Meanings and sayings from NZ are so different from the USA.

    Mary,

Download The WNBA app on your IPad for $34.00 a year.

You will like the app and will access tithe games.

Wilder turned 3 on May 7th. I don’t know where the time has gone. Waiting for the moving guys to come to empty out the POD. We’re having Wilder’s Birthday celebration later for supper. Just us. Good luck moving your plants outside. They just has a minor earthquake in Asheville! Justin’s sister just called. Someone up above has something against Asheville I think. Still no progress there with last Falls hurricane.

Seeing Mrs. Josten with her class reminds me of my appreciation for all the teachers my daughter’s had. There has to be a special place in heaven for teachers. How cool that you shared your quilts with them.
I am looking forward to a warm sunny weekend.

Of course the kids would love the coziness of Bulleyes quilt. Us adults do too.
I did a school program many years ago on quilt blocks and how their names came to be. Only chose a few children would understand like Bears Paw. I loved the stories told to me on who had a quilt and who didn’t and maybe that time influenced my feelings that I wish every child had a quilt to wrap around them. I admire those who take time to make and give out charity quilts even if we have a stack of our own we want to make.

Love the Q is for quilts pictures.
Lower grade teachers have a place in Heaven for their patience. I taught high school for 35 years in a rural setting and there were days🤦🏼‍♀️ I used to think high school males were locked into a 5th grade boy mode at times.
Ohio is finally having a beautiful weekend to enjoying being outside.

  14. Des

That looks like a very lively bunch enjoying the quilt show. My houseplants can’t wait until I move them outside. We are going to have a beautiful sunny weekend after days of rain. All the trees have leafed out, the hummingbirds are visiting & the bluebirds, wrens and robins are nesting. Garden has lettuce, potatoes & beets growing. I lost quite a few perennials this winter & I am debating whether to replace them or just do some big pots of annuals. Decisions, decisions!

Kathy – Really? Which little guy? Yes, I’ll retrieve them right now.

        1. Kathy Rayhons

This little guy standing right in front of his teacher with his head tilted! I did not get the pictures. I don’t see where I can add a picture.

Mary, what precious little children! I’m sure they liked you and your quilts. Hazel and Keeper would have had a grand time there too!!!
The azaleas and rhododendrons are still blooming here.
It is a beautiful time of the year. Our Lily of the Valley is at peak bloom. I wanted to have a Lily of the Valley bridal bouquet in 1968 but it was going to cost $100.00
which was not in the budget. This year I could make several bouquets!😂

Sorry about the passing of the longtime church friend.
Your music will be a gift to his friends and family.

Yes hank does look happy in the pool. That was kind of you to go to a pre-k class with quilts. So cute the two laying their heads on the bullseye quilt. Looks like the kids enjoyed you being there.

Mary, It was fun seeing you showing your quilts to the littles! They looked so happy and healthy! You looked like you enjoyed your visit to school today too! Today I went to look at flowers for my flower pots and a couple perennials. The perennials are spendy, but there was a lot of winterkill with no snow cover. I will be watering tomorrow early to get things growing. Tomorrow my granddaughter, Chiara and I are going to a card-making class. She likes to make things so I thought she might enjoy this activity. She is going to be at our house a lot this summer when her folks are at work. I have a couple outings planned plus the weekly checking of the bluebird houses I put up at Camden State Park. This month is going by fast. The 15th is next week already! I have a few plants to put outside as well, most need to get new soil and a bit larger pot as well. Larry has the corn and soybeans and packed the beans, soon it will be rock picking time. All is well here!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cynthia – yup, all those activities sound like springtime on the farm – especially the hated rock picking. Oh,how we complained when Dad said it was that time. If Chiara is going to be at your house a lot this summer you’ll have fun – maybe she’ll even help with rock picking?

  18. Barbara (Columbia, SC)

Well I’m officially living in Columbia, SC as of today. We closed on the house in NY at 8:30 this am. I’m trying not to think about the NY house but I have a lot of memories from the past 13 years. We hired 2 men to unload the POD tomorrow here in SC because we’re just to sore and tired to do it ourselves. Once everything is in the house and/or garage, I don’t care if it takes me all summer to unpack it. I truly mean I WILL NEVER MOVE AGAIN !!!!! Actually spent a little bit of time this morning looking at a neat Sunflower quilt and pulled fabric from my stash to use. Hope to start it soon.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – I don’t blame you! I’ve been here since 1979 and have always intended to die here. Yes, take your time unpacking and stop and sew to relax. What’s the hurry to unpack? How’s your little grandson? He must be about 9 months?

      1. Barbara in New York (Finally in Columbia, SC)

Mary, Wilder turned 3 on May 7th. Not sure where the time has gone! Waiting for the moving guys to show up to empty the POD. Just got a call from Asheville that they just had a minor earthquake/tremor. Someone up above sure has it in for that area. It still hasn’t been cleaned up from the hurricane last fall. Simply amazing the area’s government is getting away with it.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – has it really been that long since we started corresponding? Good grief!

  19. Christine in AZ

I love that you shared quilts with the pre-K kiddos. Start ‘em young, I say.

  20. Sharon F

Mary, that’s so kind of you to do a presentation of quilts for the Pre-K class. The kids look like it is was fun for them.

I bought some plants today to plant – two color pots for the patio- all I’m going to do this year. There are plenty of perennials in the yard for more color.

  21. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

So sweet of you and quilts at pre k! Looks like sweet Hank is living it up in pool😻!
