Sunday Afternoon, 11-24-24

Checking all the channels for games I’d like to watch – big deal, huh? Poor Hazel and Keeper! Rick is working in the barn and they won’t even come out of the house to go along. Makes me so sad and tearful. I think maybe Hank will come over to see them later today – I’d feel so much better – mentally if not physically.

They are finally going to be adding nutrients to my IV – I have not had anything for several days – one meal since surgery and that all came up – thus the tube down my nose – the worst thing I’ve ever experienced.

Small room, no view, no sunshine, no end from my viewpoint. Why did I ever agree to have this done? She offered to let me continue with tests, remember? But I didn’t want to have it hanging over my head so I agreed to get it over with.

This is all I’ve ever gotten to put in my mouth to swallow – ice chips! I’ll never look at ice chips the same again – they’re so wonderful!!!

I’m going to walk now before the game starts at 3 – thanks for all the prayers – pray I get this tube out asap!!!

Good evening Mary, continue your journey knowing that many of us are keeping an eye out on the blog and praying for a quick recovery! Hoping the food is starting to go through and you can be rid of the NG tube for good. Patience is very hard when you are the patient! I’ve been a caregiver since 1976, you do the math! It is much easier to say you can get up, when your gut is ripped up and let alone the unexpected sneeze or cough! I remember those killer days. I had much more empathy for my patients after my personal trail.
Keeping you close in thought and prayers. God is with you and goes before you!

i think your view alone would be enough to drive me out of my mind!! from beautiful trees and fields to a brick wall ! ewwww. …not to mention the nose and iv tubes tethering you !! its healthcare jail. time to contact patient services and see if they have any working therapy dogs available for a visit. mental health is as important as physical and you are overdue!

    Good morning Mary,
I’m wishing for you a better day. You need to be where you are, but it will be so wonderful when you can recuperate in your own bed with all helpers around you. Wouldn’t it be fun if you could sneak Hazel in for a visit!
Any test results? Are they saying your surgery was a success? Praying for that.
Maybe they will let you have some ice cream or sherbet. Yum. Love to you.

Praying you will see better days soon and be back home to get fully recovered. My husband was in the hospital 4 times the first 6 months of this year and three visits they put the ng tube in. Some of the nurses were good at doing it, others not so much. His 4th visit was when he had a heart attack and passed away in July. Your readers sent me soooo many cards! They are wonderful ladies! But don’t you worry, God is in control.
Regarding the pristine sewing room, there is a saying about that “Creative minds are rarely tidy.”
    You are loved!

    Hi, Mary,
Praying you are feeling better now ( adding mine to all the other prayers going up for you.). After Hank’s visit your dogs probably feel a bit better, too.
    You sure are loved!

Hello Mary, Donna Sproston commented last night about waiting for your intestines to wake up. She is absolutely right.
Keep sucking on that ice, it might help. (Voice of experience here, from just last August.)

Thinking Iof you this morning and hoping you’ll be home soon. I know I felt weird when I was in the hospital for days. It’s sureal. Things are changing and you’re cooped up unstable to be a part of it.
I’m glad Michele brought Hank over for a visit. That probably did a world of good for Hazel and Keeper.
I’m sure Rick is missing you and hoping you’ll be home soon.
I’ve already had Christmas music on in my house. Many people have their lights up and I like to see them when I walk the dog at night. Going to have my brother drive me downtown to see the tree lit in our downtown square. They posted the tree being installed on Facebook and I never realized what an ordeal they have to go through to get it safely installed. Funny what we take for granted. Hats off to all the city workers of this great country of ours.
    Prayers for your recovery.

Oh Mary I hadn’t seen a blog for a couple days and was thinking they moved you back to the hotel for the transition.
The ng tube sounds terrible. I’d be gagging the whole time. Gosh I hope they are giving you nutrition. You can’t heal without it. Is the vomiting because of the trauma or anesthesia or pain meds that slow everything down? There is anti nausea medication.
Oh gosh , that windowless room would just about send me over. I need the sunlight and at least daylight. How could they even design a room without windows? That’s not healthy.
My big sports watching was the Washington Spirit women’s team (soccer) get defeated by the Orlando …can’t think of their name. The score was 1-0. Our team has Trinity Rodman on it. They had multiple shots on goal but Orlando’s goalkeeper is exceptional.
Yesterday I watched the Washington Commanders get walloped by Dallas. That was the weirdest game ever especially the last quarter. Washington almost tied it up as they scored in the last few minutes but the extra point failed. The kicker had made every extra point all season and missed it for the first time. There were still a few seconds left in the game and Dallas somehow on a weird play scored another touchdown just like that. Could not believe it.
Everyday Mary I’m hoping and praying you feel better everyday so you can split that joint. Hugs.
      Pat in Md.

Hope your day is better today. Prayers you will be home soon.
We are enjoying our visit in Ohio. Saturday we went to the Amish country..Sunday my daughter and I had a sewing day together. Today (Monday) we went to Springfield to an antique mall and walked around for 3 hours and didn’t see it all. Huge place! Tuesday the 3 granddaughters and families will be coming for Thanksgiving. The rest of the week will be playing with our 7 great grands.
It is cloudy and 60 degrees here today.
Hope you can enjoy the day! Thinking of you and so glad to have you as a friend.

I’m so sorry you’re so miserable! I hope this resolves soon so you can get the heck out of there. I think when you get home and start feeling better, you’ll be glad you got it over with. We currently ( for 3 more weeks ) have a mid-19th century red and green appliqué quilt exhibit at The Quilters’ Hall of Fame. The quilts are from the Christ collection. Pat and Arlan Christ live in Berks County, Pennsylvania, just north of Lancaster County. They started collecting antique quilts years ago and now own around 1,000 historic quilts. They’ve been good friends to the QHF—Arlan served on our board. Anyway, they did a walk-through for us last Wednesday and I took pictures I’ll send you. All the quilts date from 1850-1870, approximately. They were all “best” quilts and are pristine. Hope you enjoy them !

    1. Patricia

The Christ’s are wonderful. They’ve brought collections to our quilt guild several times over the years and just recently. They have quite a collection and the two of them are really funny.
What a treat to have their quilts on exhibit.
I live in Maryland and our small guild is called Village Piecemakers.
      Pat

      1. Sue in Marion, IN

Hi Pat—the Christs have been coming out to TQHF for quite awhile-they have had two exhibits in the museum and have presented several exhibits at our annual Celebration. They also belong to the Midwest Fabric Study Group (an offshoot of AQSG) and usually attend the fall meeting in Shipshewana. They are very funny and have an amazing collection of quilts! Arlan says Pat can give opinions on quilts but he doesn’t let her bid!😁

Remember Mary – this too shall pass. Hang in there and know the turning point is coming very soon. It is so difficult for someone with such independence and stamina to have to be cooped up and not feeling well on top of it but you will get through it! All of us readers are wishing you well and hoping for a speedy recovery. Before long you will be back home where you belong and taking care of all the fur babies that are missing you so terribly. Rest up, soon you will be busy again!
My husband has had several surgeries over the past few years and does very poorly with the meds they use afterward. They make some people very sick and it’s hard to feel like you are improving when that happens. I will keep checking in to see how things are going for you and hope for good news soon!!

  11. Donna Jo

Hope you’re feeling better this morning. Your dogs sure miss you. Hank will definitely cheer them up. Once you are healed, you will be glad you had the surgery. Continued prayers for your recovery.

  12. Sandy

Hi Mary, l hope you are starting to feel a bit better soon, tie a pillow to your stomach when you go home, l am worried the dogs might jump up! Protect the wound area! A bit of a silly solution, but take care of yourself Mary. We are going to have a small get together of ,y husband’s friends to remember him in a couple of weeks, so l guess l had best start a list of things to do and baking. I am making a dress for Luna and spotted top for Stella (red with black spots) for summer, hopefully we will get some warm weather! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  13. Alice in SW OH

Mary, continued prayers that you feel better very soon & that nasal tube gets removed very soon! Though it’s been many years since I had any surgery, I certainly can understand you being bored. I’m wondering if you might have had a problem with the antibiotics/ pain killers they gave you. I can’t tolerate any of them. Same reaction you’ve had! I do think as you heal you will be glad you had the surgery! Take care, lots of prayers still coming your way!

  14. Elizabeth P McDonald

Mary, I am thinking of you often and praying too that you get better quickly and can have the tube out; I know it will happen soon if it has not already, and you will feel so much better! Before you know it, the nurse will be coming in with your discharge papers. Hang in there, and know that you have a small army of quilting fans in your corner rooting for you.

  15. Kim from Wi

I do hope with each passing day that you feel closer to going home to the farm and all those wonderful critters that are missing you. Having a NG tube sounds miserable for sure. My prayers continue for you,

  16. Debra L Reber

Oh, Mary, so sorry this recovery process is so hard. But hang in there, I bet you will eventually be glad you went ahead & had the surgery. I’m continuing to send prayers that things get better for you.

  17. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

Aww Mary, you are one tough cookie and you will get through this! Just think, before long you’ll be checking out and maybe be able to get a McRib and a special iced tea! Penny and Lucy say hey! 😻🥰

  18. Betty K. in Rapid City

I don’t know how it happened, but here I am in the comments!!! I have really missed everybody.
Oh, Mary, surgery it isn’t easy to recover from surgery. Plus, I’m sure you are climbing the walls to get out of there and home to the critters. Not being able to eat would be hard. Remember, the nursing staff might not be in your room, but they have you on a monitor and can see everything.

For anybody who is really bored and liked the excitement of the Buffalo Roundup, I’m sure it is all on the computer. I haven’t had a computer from Sept 20 and haven’t looked, but if you keyed in “Custer State Park, 2024 Buffalo Roundup” or something like that, you will get into the web site with living color and sound. The sound and the ground shaking is very impressive. One of my friends went this year and said it was worth the trip and getting up so early. Mary, you might even have time to enjoy it since you are a prisoner of the hospital??

I hope getting into the blog site continues as I really missed all of you. Actually I felt like I was cut off from the world and nobody missed me — but you girls missed me. That’s nice.\
Take care. Betty in Rapid City

    1. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

We DID miss you Betty!! I was worried so I am so happy you are back😀😀. You take care!

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Betty – YES, WE MISSED YOU!!!! I know I’m not the only one and what’s with your computer that it just started working? Who cares? It works! And now we can talk to you again.
I am so bored with sitting here watching tv – reading, sleeping, it’s all so boring. Now I’m going to go online and look up the roundup.

    3. Connie R. In N. Wis.

Betty, Glad you’re back! I watched the Buffalo Roundup online last year, after you told us about it. I never knew the herd was rounded up in the winter. I learned a lot.
Mary, Hoping you’re doing better tonight and were able to get some nourishment. The worse days are behind you and, better days ahead as you get back home.

    4. Kim from Wi

So nice to hear from you Betty, we did miss you. I will look up the Buffalo Roundup, it sounds like something I should put on my bucket list.

    5. Kris in WI

Good to hear from you, Betty. I’ve missed you wry and to-the-point comments that help keep us all grounded. I’ll find the Buffalo Roundup. Sounds like something my dh would like to see. Kris

  19. Kris in WI

Dear Mary, I can’t help but think that the angels in charge of sorting prayer requests are working overtime making sure the Good Lord gets every single one meant for you and yours ASAP. I’m sure they want you well as much as we do. Of course, then they will have to deal with all the prayers of thanks! I would ask you to be patient…but as my dh would tell me, “Easy for YOU to say,” so I’d best stop with the advice.
I hope Keeper and Hazel enjoy their time with Biscuit and that you will be with Rick and your fur friends before long. Prayers continue. Kris

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kris – Keeper and Hank played and wrestled till their tongues were hanging out – Hazel is just above that level of nonsense from the boys. Haha! I will be the first to start with the prayers of thanks as I’m pretty miserable.

      1. Donna Sproston

So sorry you are still stuck in Methodist waiting for your intestines to wake up. When my appendix ruptured I thought the nurses with stethoscope on my belly would never hear “bowel sounds” again and they were not talking about the sounds we usually make! Iowa women won again today but I was sewing Christmas gifts and missed it. I am sure Hazel is going to be ecstatic to see you, Rick too! May each day be better!

  20. Jeanine from SE iowa

Praying you get a good night’s rest and that tomorrow will be a better day for you. Thinking of you often. Hang in there.

  21. Tanya T. in Houston

Sending hugs and good wishes to you! So sorry for all your troubles, but weekends in a hospital are THE worst so maybe this week will be more healing. You made the right decision and soon will be up and home and more yourself again and won’t have to face the big surgery question in the future. You’ll be ready to celebrate the holidays and to eat all of your favorite things by then!!

Beautiful day today. Our Mission Stitchers group set up shop outside the church in a covered sidewalk area for the last sale of bazaar items for the year. Several people bought tree skirts. Lots of kids bought small items for grandparents and family members. They LOVED the small stuffed frogs and little bags to hold Hot Wheels and such. The ladies are ready to pack it up until next year, believe me!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Tanya – little bags for Hot Wheels – that sounds fun. How big are they and do they have a tie at the top? Guess I can figure this out myself – I’ll need to buy a Hot Wheels first.

  22. Meredith In Cincinnati

Being in the hospital is SO hard. It’s almost impossible to rest, because I’m sure they’re in your room checking on you often. I think having the surgery was a good idea, if you got the answers to questions you had? Soon, you’ll be home recovering. Much easier to do at home. Hoping the trip home happens soon!

  23. Joyce from NY

I’m so sorry your going thru all of this terrible stuff, your a tough lady, hang in there Mary it’s going to better.

  24. CAROLYN KNOTT

Mary I have been and will continue to pray for you. I don’t know you personally but from what you write about you are such a gifted and energetic person. And I know this has got to be a real drag for you. Hopefully the NG tube will be discontinued soon and soon you will be on the road to recovery gain.
Just know there are lots of people praying for you.

  25. Kris in Naperville

Oh Mary! Stay strong… it stinks when you don’t feel well and then that tube…. I know that you will be turning the corner real soon and then you will be back home in the comfort of your own home… until then, I am praying for peace and comfort for you….

  26. Sandra Goddard

Thanks for the update. Don’t doubt your decision to have surgery remember it always gets worse before it gets better. If he truly listens to prayers he must be on overload with all the prayers being sent to him for your health. Take care.

  27. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

Nauseous not bauseous!! I had to rejoin to get to respond, but it worked just fine:)
Keep on healing please. Also, as someone else mentioned, some people have to take anti nausea drugs with Oxy drugs. They need to give you some kind of protein. Maybe Premier Protein or something! Good luck.

  28. Jackie in NY

Oh Mary – I hope you’re enjoying the game – whichever one you decided to watch. We taped the Giants/Bucs game and are just watching it now. It’s tough to be a Giants fan this year (and most recent years ). I pray you’ll get rid of the NG tube soon. My sister has had several of them and she hates it too. I pray that you’ll get to eat real food and that it stays down. I feel bad for your pups too.

  29. Chris in AZ

I don’t comment often but wanted you to know I’m praying for you too. And I hope you get the nasal tube out soon!

  30. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

Hello Mary, I am sorry to read that you are having a tough time post-surgery, and I hope things improve for you soon – hang in there! The aftermath of major surgery is rarely easy – you just need time to heal and for your body to get over the shock. But you know in your heart of hearts that having the surgery was the right choice. For an outdoor person no sunshine and no view is tough: on the other hand I was in a hospital once where my view was the cemetery right next door! So it could be worse!
You are a very independent and active person, so I am sure hospital doesn’t suit you at all! I hope the tubes are gone soon and you can focus on recovery. Rick, Hazel and Keeper will be so pleased when you come home!
Sending you healing vibes form the Netherlands! Where the view is wet, grey and windy! And all the leaves came down in the first winter storm on Friday night, so my only autumn colour is now lying soggy on the grass!

  31. Shirley Andersen Smith

I am sorry you are going through so much with this surgery.
I hope you are starting to heal now and will be getting out of there soon.
Keeper and Hazel will be very happy to see you but cannot jump on you.
Hang in there, you will be back home soon resting.
Cloudy here in Central Oregon today. Watching the Seahawks and Cardinals. Go Hawks.
I am also finally( after many years) finishing a basket quilt I have wanted to make, a wallhanging.
I watched a viseo on this PRISTINE qquilt room. I don’t think it has ever been used as it was much too tidy!!!
    Ha!
Keeping you in my prayers and thoughts and with all the prayers you are getting i know you are in the mend and will be going home soon.
    Shirley in Central Oregon

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Shirley- all pristine sewing rooms are more for show than sewing – in my opinion. Mine will never be pristine!

  32. Jeanie S, Central IL

Oh Mary, I feel so bad for you; this has been the worst recovery.I am hopeful you are much better next week.
    Hugs & Prayers, 🥰

  33. Bonnie Specchio

Just hate that you are going through such an ordeal. I sure hope things improve quickly for you. And that you finally get to eat – I can’t imagine going that long without food. God bless you and keep you. Hope you will be back in your cozy home very soon!

  34. patti leal

well, mary, i can say that the next time they say they want to do surgery, you will probably say no. i totally understand. this ordeal will end and you will mend. for someone who is used to being outside alot i can see where the small room you are in would drive you nuts. sunshine is important. do you get to see outside when you go on your ‘walks’? i don’t get to go out much but i surely do want to be able to look outside and see what is going on out there.
i’ve spent a bit of time today going through the greens and reds. the greens i got yesterday only provided a bit of 5″ squares. the strips were too small. tons of reds though. but since i don’t want ten of the same piece, i will be raiding the 6″ squares. i have more stacks to go thru to hopefully get what i need. then i will press and cut the star fabric and make the half square star points.. probably not til tomorrow sometime. have to be an adult and pay bills later today. we have decided to have a roast for thanksgiving. hoping he gets a large one so we’ll have lots of left overs. this is one of my favorite meals. will probably make a pecan pie even if i eat the whole things. (over several days, of course).
lots of prayers and gentle hugs, patti in florida who cat can’t seem to leave my side for the last several days – guess my being out of sorts made him weird also

    1. Li

It is a coincidence that I was going through a few assortments of almost five inch squares as well. Since many came up short I have decided to add a complimentary piece and then I will use them for jazzy half square triangles. That will make for a fun day. Lots of scraps to shuffle through.

    2. Laurie

Mary, I am so sorry you are having to go through this. As my Dad ( & Winnie the Pooh) use to say, You are braver than you believe, Stronger than you seem , Smarter than you think and LOVED more than you know. You are loved by so many! I hope you start to feel better very soon. Many hugs. I hope you get to go home very soon and all of this is in the rear view mirror. Hang in there!

  35. Lynn

Oh my, I would think you would be weak without food, but I am not a nurse or doctor!

Everyone at home is missing you. It is interesting dogs show more emotion to their humans than cats.

    Still sending prayers for you.

  36. Jo in Wyoming

This is kinda weird. I can’t comment until someone else does first. Then the comments box appears.

I know this has been a very unpleasant ordeal for you, but maybe, if it happens to another of us, we will heed your warning and go for testing instead of surgery. Medical never tells us the negative side effects or recovery issues.
I hope you found a game to watch. It does help to pass the time.
Hazel and Keeper will be so happy to see you…as much as you will be happy to see them.
We all will be happier when you get home.
    Love and kisses,

  37. Lynn in Scottsdale, AZ

Sorry you are feeling so low.

When I had my abdominal surgery, I thought they wrecked me inside. It all passed, and I recovered.

I see you received some pretty flowers, and a private room is a blessing. I had a roommate with many noisy visitors. They kept waking me up.

Tim and I spent time with our great-niece yesterday. She is 13 and loves biking to Subway and shopping at CVS. We had a list of chores for her to do, and she earned $25 to spend. Also, I started teaching her how to crochet, and she started catching on.

We will keep praying for you, Rick, and family.

  38. Helen

I have to take any meds besides tylenol with some kind of food. The best I’ve found is a bit of plain yogurt. Also, I insisted on phenergan for nausea when I took strong antibiotics. Took several days to figure this much out. I’ve only had gall bladder surgery but spent 5 days in hospital with that and then 9 days with pneumonia. No fun at all. God bless you Mary. It just is taking time for your body to get back to normal….whatever that may be. Lots of love and prayers coming your way. God bless! And thank goodness for tv sometimes! hah!

  39. Jean

My goodness Mary. Don’t those people know you need protein to heal? Good grief but you will be nothing but a bag of bones by the time you get out of there. I’m praying daily for your recovery so I know it is coming.🙏

  40. Lois Ann Johnson

What a NIGHTMARE! I can’t believe all of the things happening to you since surgery. I am praying for it to end soon and for you to be home. You are one tough woman but this is ridiculous. Hugs and prayers!

  41. Diane, Squeak, Buddy

Hi Mary, Your ordeal sounds awful. I had a thought. I cannot take a whole Oxycodone or any Oxy pills. I can take a half every 4 to 6 hours. When I took a whole one, I was dizzy and bauseous. Not sure if this helps, but it might. I hope you get some food and feel better soon!!
