The Email, 6-27-26

The email I received today was titled “Be Kind To Others” and here it is:

“Just ignore that last paragraph if you’re offended.” (You might recall I wrote that in last night’s blog post.)

Sandi says:

Why would you write that, if you didn’t intend to offend others?  Your iPad has a delete button, you should have used it.

From Sandi Globus

Here is my response:

I do know how to delete – this blog is MY opinion.  Thanks for unsubscribing so I don’t have to do it for you.

All of the comments I have received agree that the assault on Caitlyn was nearly criminal. I can only assume that my friend Sandi fits the description of many of the members of the WNBA who are jealous of Caitlyn.

Nice day here today – almost cool but I understand that’s going to change tomorrow. It was a great day on the wilderness trail.

More fencing to keep the little darlings from mowing my hydrangeas to the ground!

Reader photos

My friend Charlotte came across these sewing motions from her grandmother – such treasures! I love old sewing notions!

Isn’t this just so sweet?
Note date of 1893

Barbara found this at Goodwill for $6.99!! Hand quilted, too.

Robbie in MI had these sand cranes visit her yard today.

These pink hydrangeas are Endless Summer – Connie gave me the plant when our first dog, Carly died, as a memorial in her honor. And notice the vase – a true treasure I bought years ago at a flea market. And the little flag pillow was a gift from Connie several years ago.

And this is what I did this afternoon. I cleared all the weeds and sprayed thoroughly before I moved this old iron baby bed into place. I am planning to put some of my house plants inside the bed – it’s in filtered but bright light. 35 years ago this was a gorgeous lily bed. They have died out and I hate gardening in the ground so I’m planning on the hydrangeas spreading around the bed. I can only grow hydrangeas – even the hollyhocks I planted aren’t looking too good – they need a drink.

A reader teased me about the pond liner coming up – she wondered if somebody came in with a box cutter and slit the bottom. Hahahahaha!!!!!!!

The small metal baby bed is super cute, and I think using it in the garden is a wonderful idea. I don’t watch basketball, but I did watch what happened to Caitlyn on the news, it’s disgraceful and it’s not being dealt with properly in my opinion. I wonder if this would be so overlooked if it happened in Mens ball??Mary this is your blog, you manage it anyway you want and post whatever you wish.

  2. Gloria from CC

What happened to Caitlin is called aggravated assault. One game suspension and a $1,000 fine is not enough! Thomas should have been charged and sitting in a jail cell right now waiting for her trial date. What everyone has apparently forgotten is that Cathy Engelbert, Commissioner of WNBA since July 2019, makes no apologies for not liking Caitlin. Everyone is mad at the WNBA for their lack of response when it comes to Caitlin and the Fever team. Well Cathy is the top dog and she is making the decisions. Fire Cathy – problem solved.
I only watch basketball because of Caitlin and only if she is playing. What happened to her last week made me very angry and life is too short to be angry. I won’t watch another game unless I hear changes have been made.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

I agree with everything you said! But I hate to not watch – there’s a video online, it’s quite long, that shows every flagrant foul Caitlin has endured since 2025. I think Englelbert is jealous of Caitlin and probably won’t pursue this further. Thomas should be banned for life – she has attacked Caitlyn before. And Bonner just stood there and helped – the lovely married couple can be let go together.

      1. Diane, Squeak, Buddy

I agree with both of you. I like to watch, but I do get mad when the game becomes so violent. Some of them I have watched have been with players other than Caitlin, too, so there needs to be some intervention with the refs and leadership.

  3. Deb in Idaho

Good morning, I love this blog. I read other blogs but this is my favorite. I guess it’s down to earth.
I watch the WNBA ,I played basketball in my teens and I know how competitive women are. I got hurt and decided not to continue. I feel the referee’s are not doing a good enough job. We’ve had cool weather with rain, so nice.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Deb – and I forgot to thank you for reading this blog! We are all pretty much down to earth – good people, nothing fancy with pretty similar lives. I know I don’t lead a charmed life for sure and I appreciate the readers who aren’t looking for something bigger and better. Don’t forget – it’s the blog about nothing!!

  4. Sherri Huff

    Mary,
Love these photos today of the 4 legged kids playing in the yard, all the Americana photos and that Thrift store find!

I don’t watch basketball but have seen the violence towards Caitlyn and it sickens me! What the Hell is wrong with the refs, coaches? They should be suspended for the rest of the season of better yet, kicked out of the league! That’s my opinion!

This is your blog and if peeps don’t like it (that I don’t get?!) don’t read it! You do t have to say something hateful if you disagree with someone. What happened to where we listen to another person’s opinion and didn’t have to make a comment if we didn’t agree? Common courtesy seems to be lost in our world.

Love that old bed and am looking forward to it being all fancy with plants on it!
Today is gorgeous here, no 100’s in the forecast for the next10 days!!! WooHoo! Those of you that are having horrible weather, I’m praying for you.
    Enjoy this glorious day!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sherri – I don’t k ow what’s wrong with the refs and the officials – is somebody paying them off to get rid of Caitlin? They’ll be in a world of hurt if they do – she made the WNBA and they’d all be poor and traveling in buses if she wasn’t around. Maybe that would be the answer – she could be a professional golfer!

  5. Cynthia in Minnesota

Greetings Mary! We got 3.2” of rain last night’ and it was windy, no branches down but one of my butterfly bushes broke off so I pushed it back into the ground. My interpretation of women’s college and pro basketball especially with the infractions to Caitlin Clark made me decide the attackers are thugs and they get by with the deplorable behaviors, if the refs would penalize the abusers, and the coaches would come down hard on such behaviors, maybe, just maybe it would stop and we would be able to see great basketball. I saw nothing offensive about your comment and don’t understand why Sandi was offended. It is so humid out, Staying inside today. Sewing the binding on a quilt. Loved the photos today, and Keeper and Hazel look so happy and healthy to be out on the wilderness trail, which looks wonderful!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cynthia – we got only 1.75” but it was so welcome! Lots of leaves and twigs in my yard – dang! It was looking so good, too. Yes, they are jealous of Caitlin and the refs and coaches need to act but will they? I’d like to say I will boycott and not watch but I will watch. Honestly how mean can women get? That Alyssa Thomas has attacked other players resulting in black eyes, ankle and back problems. She and her wife Bonner need to be banned. Ugh. I always try to add that what I say is MY OPINION. And who says I have the final word? Nobody!!!!

  6. Sue Smith

I just love your “America” arrangement on the table, Mary. And, I covet that vase. Opps…jealousy showing. lol
Very rainy and cold here. Had to turn up that darn furnace again, and I was cold all night until I finally got up and got a quilt out of the cupboard. Our gardens are going to suffer I think, because the forecast is not good. Weird. Just weird all over the world. Your blog is my stabilizer. Thank you.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – It finally warmed up today but now they’re predicting heat indices to be 115+. Haha! Furnace to AC in one day. Yes, isn’t that vase just fabulous? The only time I really use it is during patriotic holidays and I don’t keep it out because the cats would knock it off. I bet I’ve had it for 25-30 years! A treasure – I hope someone buys it at my sale after I die.

  7. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

Hi All, it is going to be HOT here this week, too. I am taking all quilts to laundromat to dry after I wash. Heat up there not here😹😹.
Mary, one of the best classes I took in grad school was Individual Differences. As I teacher, it was how I treated my “kids”. I taught kids of every color, religion—yes, Hindu and Muslim and all others, every sexual identity, , every sport, club, everything. I respected each student and treated them with love and dignity. As a person, I have my beliefs and I am free in this country to express them if I choose just as every person is. I can hear things I like or do not like, but I do not have to react to them. I am not sure of the motivation of those players against Caitlyn, but she has always maintained her dignity and calmness. I admire that in her and dislike what happened to her. Just as I can say what I think, you can definitely say what you think😍😍.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diane – Yes, you’re right! I try not to engage in any bristly topics on this blog but if I do post a questionable remark, I try always to make readers know it’s my opinion only. I’ll bet you could tell stories about teaching, couldn’t you? Individual Differences – wow! And this extends to politics, religions, and all personal decisions. I feel so bad for Caitlyn and almost wish she’d quit and go play pro golf. Yes, she has composure that I could never hope to achieve! She never accepts praise – it’s always her team. How can anyone dislike her unless they’re jealous?

  8. Kathy in western NY

Once again a lack of integrity for us to view. At least we weren’t lied to and said it didn’t happen . WBA should be ashamed they didn’t stand up for a woman athlete with repercussions that would have shown respect to the sport so this is not tolerated. One game is not acceptable for the seriousness of what is being endured.
Glad you speak the truth Mary! Your blog so you say what you want.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – I so wish for justice for Caitlyn! Thomas should be suspended for the rest of the season but she’s done this many times before and her coach is defending her – and the commissioner isn’t doing anything either. Caitlin has acted only in the best interest of the league from day one. How can they hate her so much? Jealousy is a horrible thing.

  9. Cindy K

I think Sandi misunderstood your message. I read that it was disgusting that two players went after Caitlyn -had nothing to do with the fact that they’re a gay couple but that one had a beef with her so they both attacked her. At any rate-it is your blog and you have a right to post your opinion. And it was beyond disgusting that they were getting away with assault. Says a lot not only about the players but their coach too.
I watched the game last night and it was a good one. Missed seeing Caitlyn play but I also enjoy watching her teammates play. Has been fun watching how much they’ve improved since I started watching them. And they played really well last night.

    1. Li

Well said Cindy. That was my interpretation also. This clarification may be enlightening to someone else. Two people ganging up on others.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Cindy K – they did play well and I still want to watch – I don’t want to boycott but if they’d all realize they have Caitlyn to thank for their jobs, bigger salaries, better travel conditions, etc, why then would they be so jealous? I’ll go back and read again – Sandi wanted to unsubscribe however which is fine with me.

  10. Carolyn

Your blog, you can say what you want to say. Hydrangeas are gorgeous. Had a big, beautiful bush (blue) at one time and it brought me so much pleasure.

  11. Linda from Georgia

Mary, viewership soared over a million to a million and a half when Caitlan started playing. Every time she doesn’t play (injury) it drops like 55%. They should be thanking this young lady for attracting this interest in the WNBA! Ungrateful bunch!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – exactly what I just wrote in a comment. They should be so grateful to her!!!

  12. Linda in Central Iowa

Loving the pictures – quilts, flowers, animals, scenery, collections – so much variety and each so unique. Your blog is so wonderful to highlight each person’s talents and interests. I have a saying on my wall: My personality is who I am, my attitude depends on who you are. I find it almost hilarious that others can be offended by what we say, but we cannot be offended by what they say. Must be ignorance regarding the constitutional right to free speech. Bring it on Mary, we love your blog.

    1. li

Thank you Linda. More people should cultivate their sense of humor to help them really hear what someone else is saying. A strong dialog with one another does wonders.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – haha! Excellent saying! I really try never to bring up a controversial subject like politics but I have my own view on that, too – like we all do. This blog about nothing must remain somewhat neutral on such matters but Caitlyn’s another story. I am enraged at the lack of punishment.

  13. Bonny

A quiet morning here, no air moving, but heat and humidity are forecast. My yard is “frosted” by clover blossoms, and the Linden tree is in full bloom…..such fragrance! Have several bee watering plates out, in the shade, hoping they find it! On a recent night hike, the naturalist said this generation of children are likely the last to see lightning bugs! My plan for the heat is to sew. Working on an I SPY quilt for a baby due in August. Did some extra cooking yesterday…pasta salad weather for sure!

WNBA: review story about killing the golden goose. Grimm’s fairytale or Aesop Fable?

Mary keep up your good work and personal blog. How many baby chicks made it to adolescent??

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Bonny – 19 chicks out of 21 I bought! I’m getting ready to place laying boxes along the wall so they’ll get the idea when it’s time. I just love them and I count them every single night so I make sure they’re all accounted for. There is not a breath of wind right now in the porch – I know the heat is coming but right now it’s lovely.

  14. Fran Dixon SW Iowa

Entertaining post this morning. Love the photos. It’s already kicked in HOT! Very windy however.

Retreat for me most of the week. Been so busy have not been in the sewing room. But I went to a day retreat for quilters yesterday. I enjoyed the hour drive to and fro–the fields are gorgeous right now. I won two dozen of eggs–actually four dozen but I let them draw again. for the second 2. I needed them as my usual place to pick up was out. I got binding almost done on a quilt but I ran my mouth too much to finish–I got to see some quilty friends I have not seen in a while.

  15. Des

Quilt, flowers, goats & dogs- what’s not to love. That girl Hazel sure has that JRT looking for trouble strut. I agree with your take on Caitlyn & it sure looks to me that there is an effort to break her spirit. We are getting ready for a heat wave so we’re trying to get our outdoor work done before the terrible temps descend.

  16. Joy in N W iowa

Good morning! We had rain!! 1.6 inches! Someone wrote rock valley had 4.5!! Wow! I was super excited to hear the severe thunderstorm warning and listen to the rain! Awesome! The kids gave their dad a new electronic Wi-Fi gauge!
Ok, Mary, this is you , write what you want to, I’m reading it and looking at all the pictures because I like it and everything everyone writes! I think the players have picked on Caitlin from day one in college and probably before. She is white, very extremely good, and straight! I don’t watch her, but always find out what is happening to her. Those players are big bullies that need to be arrested!
Well, I wonder how hot it will get now that the rain came. I am sure it is very steamy out! I haven’t been out yet. Had too much pain during the night to get by in Tylenol, but that’s ok. Ups and downs. Someone asked if I was going to church, Haaha I’d be sleeping before the first song!
Well, have a good day and Mary I sure hope you got some rain too, your area was included in the thunderstorm warning! Your trail looks so pretty!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – yes! We got 1.75” but it was soooo windy and pouring so heavy at the exact time I had to leave for church and then walk in without getting completely drenched. I wore a raincoat but the water dripped off it! Slim crowd at church – probably because of the storm. Even if you don’t watch the games you understand the unfairness of what happens to Caitlyn on a regular basis. Makes me sad for her.

  17. Diana in Des Moines

Well said, my friend. Well said.
That is the problem in our country. A whole world of people who CANNOT hear a differing opinion without having to call them out. If we all had the same opinion, what a boring place the world would be.
Stay cool and hydrated Midwest friends.

  18. Terri S

Oh Mary! I just love your blog!I look forward to catching up w you everyday. Whether it be sports, flowers, quilts, recipes, patterns, animals or life on the farm. I LOVE it all! Thank you for all that you do.

  19. Carmen M.

I don’t watch basketball but have heard was it happening to Caitlyn, so sad and disgusting that the coaches from the opposing teams let this happen, where’s the integrity of winning fair!
This summer for the first time I had Baltimore Orioles as I tried putting out grape jelly and oranges, so beautiful! I also got Blue Indigos and several others I don’t normally get as I was putting out awesome mix seed, but this was the worst summer with bears as they were coming almost daily, Mama and her babies and I think Dad so I had to stop putting feeders out and most of the birds left! I sure miss them!

  20. Janet S

The trail picture shows Hazel who looks like she is looking to get into some mischief. Just thinking.

  21. Connie R. In N Wis

Your patriotic table top decoration is just lovely with the flag pillow and that unique vase you found. So many great pictures once again. Like so many others, I really enjoy reading your blog each morning.
YOUR BLOG with your thoughts, opinions, animals, gardens, quilts, is why we keep coming back. Some seem to forget that. Continue being you.

  22. Paula S.

Love your blog, Mary, and it is YOUR blog! If I had a blog, everyone would be offended because most of my filters are gone at this point. Ha!

Also, what is going on in women’s basketball would not be tolerated in men’s basketball! Do the refs turn a blind eye to this madness? What is wrong with people?!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Paula – women’s basketball is out of control with Caitlyn at the middle of it all – jealousy can be devastating and in this case the WNBA has a bad case of it. Poor Caitlyn.

  23. Lynette in Orlando

Last I looked this was your blog …….. wow. What ever happened to the days when we would disagree with someone but didn’t do this cancelling bs. Sad really. But what I find even sadder is that she was not happy and defending someone potentially doing serious bodily harm to CC. I find that even more disturbing.

I love all the animals! Your animals all look so happy and I know that they bring you joy as well. I’m working on getting all my 4th decor out — I’m a bit late to the party 🙃 Those are true treasures Charlotte found — I remember those cards of hooks and eyes! Would make a great shadow box of treasures.

  24. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

    Hi Mary,
Fancy finding a quilt like that for a few dollars in a thrift store! I am glad it has found a new home where it will be appreciated! From the colours it looks like early 1980’s to me.
We had a huge super cell storm system pass over the Netherlands last night, a result of the heat wave we have been having (pin Europe (it was 113 degrees in the shade on Friday, a new record for us), extreme winds, torrential rain, hailstones the size of golf balls and more than 400.000 lightning bolts in a few hours. A number of house were hit and went on fire and not that far from here a whole windmill was blown over in the centre of a town. Luckily no one was hurt when that happened. We have lots of leaves and twigs in the garden, but didn’t loose any trees (to our amazement). We had battened everything down in advance, so that helped, but I am glad it is over.
    Disgusting what happened to Caitlyn.
And your blog, your opinions and your rules!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Fiona – we are hearing about the extreme heat in Europe – I can’t imagine what 113 degrees feels like! And people are drowning because they’re jumping in all bodies of water? And then a storm, too? What has happened to our weather? If it hailed here right now the crops would be very damaged. Ugh. I hope thst doesn’t happen.

  25. Elizabeth

The sewing notions made me think of a letter I found from my great grandmother to my mom in the late 60’s. She had quite a life, was a rodeo rider with the Buffalo Bill show, ( she was 4ft.11 at her tallest) and had the guts to divorce her cheating husband and raise two kids alone ( in Oklahoma) in the late 1910’s. She loved to quilt, she’s the reason I started it. The letter was a quilt recipe and some old fabric that was lost long ago. I keep it with me when I sew.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Elizabeth – oh, how lovely! She got a divorce in 1910s?? Wow, she had guts!

  26. Sandy McPherson

Hi Mary, that’s what l don’t like about sports, people getting hurt by others(don’t start me on boxing! ), so many get brain injuries too. Our quilt guild gave 46 quilts to sweet Louise breast cancer charity yesterday, some amazing quilts! Time to take the dog outside, take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sandy – I cannot watch boxing! Their poor faces are so pummeled! Thank you for supporting a breast cancer charity.

  27. li

Had a similar thought. What is it all of a sudden about pond liners failing lately? Tsk. Tsk. Once had a coworker declare “stupid should hurt”. What a mess.

  28. Carol in Texas

The assault on Caitlyn was outrageous! I cannot believe the league puts up with that! Those attacking players should be pulled off the court….and I’m not even a basketball fan. I just saw clips of the incident on the news. Talk about Mean Girls!!!!!!!!

    1. li

The disrespect of powers that be is deplorable. My only guess is they like the money coming in from all the drama. Disgusting pieces of work if you cannot stand up for your players. Does this cr-p bring in more viewers?

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Li – I doubt it brings in viewers but those of us who watch faithfully are enraged at how they treat her.

  29. Angie from Baltimore

Great line about the pond liner. I was thinking you must have driven over it with a LARGE vehicle but that would not have damaged it surely.
Your hydrangeas are beautiful I have never seen pink ones. When you showed the Orioles nest. I live outside Baltimore and have never seen one near here. Lucky you as they are beautiful birds.
Do people not understand what a blog is? Your opinions not influenceing just stating some may not agree and they are entitled but if you are offended or put off LEAVE. really gets me

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Angie – haha! Love it! I have an active oriole nest right above the picnic table where the little goats play and another nest north of the house. They usually hang down from a branch but leaves camouflage them. I find them on the ground in the fall
