THE WINNER! 5-22-26

Here is the all time winner of the plaid quilts – I never intended it to be a contest but I think you’ll agree with me that this is the best PLAID quilt you’ll ever see. Made by Margie Fisher years ago at an ASILOMAR workshop. I have asked her for details because I am so impressed and I think you will be, too. Wow!

Patriotic patterns available now – $5 each with SASE – must be a business envelope, cash or check.

Excellent quilt Margie! I love it. My problem at home isn’t raccoons but squirrels destroying my bird feeders. I have 2 sets of Cardinals that nest in the bushes next to my deck and I really try to make sure they get a special mix of seeds for them but 4 to 5 squirrels come out of the woods and chase them away to eat their seeds. I have tried several “squirrel proof” bird feeders but they get by them everytime. Any suggestions?

Barbara – I have so many squirrels and I am always chasing them from the bird feeders!! I do not know what the solution is but if I had a cardinal pair I’d try as hard as you are to keep them safe! Best of luck!

I feed my cardinals oatmeal, two pair, and they love it. The squirrels eat it as well but put the oatmeal on the ground around an open feeder on a shepherd’s hook. The squirrels eat the oatmeal on the ground, and the cardinals eat the oatmeal in the feeder. Saves money, store brand oatmeal is not that expensive. Wrens, as well as towhees, like the oatmeal too.

    Fabulous plaid quilt! Love it!
Watched the Fever game last night. Glad they had such a good second half!

I absolutely love that beautiful plaid quilt. We have raccoon visitors but they just seem to pass through. My friend was feeding stray cats & she noticed a raccoon washing his hands & eating cat food. She thought is was cutest thing -big mistake. While she was grocery shopping in town the raccoon pulled out a screen, went in her house & ate all the fish from the fish tank. I remember Hazel’s close call with a bad raccoon.

Des – went into the house??? Ate all the aquarium fish???? Oh good grief!!! How did she get that stopped?

I have looked thru my quilts for plaid because I know I made many with Brushed Cotton purchased at Country Threads during my many camps, but I must have given them away or they are stored away.
I agree on your selection of winner! Beautiful quilt!

Karen – I have tubsfull of brushed cottons and would love to use them / just not enough time!!!

I am a sampler lover—and don’t think I’ve seen one in PLAID! Thank you for sharing, Margie!

  7. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

I too like that plaid quilt showcasing so many different blocks and plaids. Margie you should be proud of yourself. This makes me want to make a plaid quilt too. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

Margie…Love your plaid quilt. Just LOVE it!!! It must have taken quilt a while to make. Sending off my envelope today for Home of the Brave.

Yes, that plaid quilt is definitely a winner.

I am just home from a four-day bus trip to Duluth, MN. I have a lot of catching up to do! The trip was packed full of things and I am exhausted. But it was so much fun! It had nothing to do with quilting!

    1. Cynthia in Minnesota

Fran, please tell us what all you did on your bus tour to Duluth! We are going up to the NorthShore this summer..ideas on things to do an adventure awaits! I too, love that plaid quilt! Such imagination to assemble so many pleasing plaids and quilt blocks all onto one masterpiece! We are off to a graduation over by Madison, SD today, their last child! And he is off to school at SDSU, so all five of their kids will have gone there, and all have graduated as well… hard working family. The finches, house finches and both types of orioles are loving the oranges and grape jelly and we have the fun of watching them. I have a resident Robin in the front tree and she likes the jelly and mealworms too. American Goldfinches have the thistle feeder.

Yes, that patriotic quilt is a winner.
Just getting around to spring cleaning, been running around too much.

  11. Janet S

WOW! There is no doubt that is a winner. Thank you for sharing.
Our weather is changing into summer with temperatures getting up to the 80’s this week.
On another note, because our church is so very old (from 1858), we have several civil war veterans'(30) buried in our cemetery, every Memorial Day the Honar Guard comes for a brief prayer/service along with a 21-gun salute and taps played on trumpets. That’s only part of the very interesting life of East Union Lutheran Church in East Union/Carver Minnesota. We wouldn’t miss this very special recognition.
Have a great Memorial Day and remember there’s more to it than just going to the lake.

Janet – I’m hoping we’re also on a warming trend. You’re right about “going to the lake”

  12. Diana in Des Moines

    WOW! Such a fun quilt!
And your patriotic offerings make me smile. That’s the style that I love and miss.
Bet you never thought you would still be selling patterns this long after you closed up shop.
On a side note – we have a huge raccoon that is terrorizing my bird feeders. Every morning, the shepherd hooks are bent to the ground, and feeders have been emptied. 2 have been totally destroyed. So last night, Jim got a huge cage, loaded it with bait and put it behind our barn. He’s been caught! He will be taken out to Saylorville Lake today and released. I know there are others, but he is the most destructive.
Spending my weekend home in my sewing room. Grateful for those who gave all for my freedom to do so..

Last winter, I noticed seeds and something like ground corn in the corner of my patio. I had no idea where it came from until I noticed one of my shepherd hooks that held a suet feeder was missing. I went to the window and saw it was completely bent to the ground. The fork part was broken off. The suet feeder was opened. I know racoons have hands that can do things like that but I have trouble opening the suet feeder sometimes. My grandson straightened the hook and welded the fork back on. I kept suet on the tall shepherd hook and they didn’t bother that one.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sheryl – raccoons are nasty animals- very destructive and I do everything I can to keep them away from my barn. Last winter when the pond was not quite frozen Hazel discovered one and of course wanted to fight with it. Rick said that raccoon would have gotten a hold of Hazel and held her head under water til she drowned! Keeper came to the rescue however but I’ll never forget how scared I was. Keep your suet up high and hope they don’t figure it out.

        1. Sheryl Harrison

That is a scary story about Hazel and the racoon. Sometimes a stray cat shows up and I put food out. One night I heard loud noises at my back door so I turned on the light and looked out. Two racoons were fighting (looked like boxing) at the food dish and a third racoon was nearby. Since then, I empty the cat food and dump the water before it gets dark. I live in town so I wasn’t expecting those night visitors!

          1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sheryl – you’re smart to pick up the food – I hope the stray cats could eat during the day!

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Diana – don’t miss Sheryl’s story that’s almost identical to yours!!! And my comment that follows! Saw the picture of Elliott and Leah at graduation – so cute! How are you feeling? Take it easy this weekend. NO! I had no idea I’d still be “working” selling patterns at this stage of my life! And there are days I’m not happy about it either – ha!

  13. Becky Schoonover
