We had excitement at our house yesterday. The grandkids were over yesterday and we had aired out our garage sometime we had a visitor hide in our garage. About a half our later I heard noise in our garage. I went out found things tipped over. So I straighten up and opened the door. Didn’t see any thing. Went back in the house! Ten minutes later I heard more banging! This time I saw something grey! I’m thinking squirrel! Got a better look nope it was a wood Chuck! I moved the cars out and found were he was hiding and was able to pock a broom handle at him to get him out of the garage!! Life always seems to bring a little excitement!

Marie – And you live in town!! How long do you suppose he lived in your garage? Did he have water? Or do you think he just recently moved in? Woodchucks can be very destructive although not dangerous to pets as far as I know. We’ve had them around here and to my dismay the dogs kill them! Like I’ve said before, you can’t make this stuff up, can you?

I have to go to blog to write this. I can not reply off the email,AAARRRGH🤨.
Love the patriotic quilts from readers- such a variety,
Next week headed to a retreat w/ old and maybe new friends. Hope to get projects finished or at least further along.

.Love your blog and look forward to it every day. I am almost 82 years old and I can’t get out much, so all the animals, kids, and activities you bring into our lives is important to me. I do sew and quilt, read, do limited gardening and enjoy my two great granddaughters when I can. I live in the south and it is very hot right now. The highlight of my week was locking myself out of the house when I went to the mail box. I think the heat index was over 100 degrees. No water, no phone, no key, NO BATHROOM. It was an anxious few hours. Just as I decided to break a window to unlock a door, my son drove up. He got off work early, thank goodness! We are now in the process of hiding a key OUTSIDE for situations like this. I live in a rural area where everyone waves. My neighbor across and down the road a bit could not see me and when they left home and I waved, they thought I was just being friendly. I usually take my phone with me but the one day I forget it, the door decided to lock itself, which it occasionally does. The house is 76 years old and has a mind of its own. Your blog is not about nothing. Your blog is a lifeline to many.

Dear Mary! The sweet corn we had on the 4th came from the grocery store! It was really good. It was still in the husk, and old farm girl that I am, I pulled the husk back to take a look and it looked pretty good so I gave it a try! Yup! It was a winner. Our 9 year old grandson ate two ears and a whole hamburger on a bun! He was smiles from ear to ear! 😂.
You are such a selfless giving gal. You could easily up your prices in your quilt patterns! I’m not sure there is a pattern anywhere you can buy for $5! But it is your deal 😂🥴.
Well, here it is Saturday already. Where do the days go? Whooshing by. Seems like I get little accomplished!
Did you get rain yesterday in the 5th and on the 4th? We had a little shower about 8:30 last evening. Well, take care

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – yes, the 4th was a wash out and we couldn’t help but think of all the celebrations being washed out – all the picnics, family reunions, amusement rides – ugh. It wasn’t even warm here. We got almost 3” during that time. Lightning struck on old tree up by the highway and there must have been a thousand little twigs in the yard. Oh, my aching back! Oh, the pattern price is just to cover the costs – I’m not looking to make money on the deal. And with the SASE it’s pretty easy and fast although I’m having a bit of a problem with XEROX right now.

I read the blog on a laptop, so I haven’t missed anything, but today the ads were either Alzheimer’s-related or from a Dumpster Rental Company!!! Is the cosmos trying to tell me something??? LOL.

Thanks again for your tenacity in keeping all the blog’s bells and whistles going, Mary. And thanks to all who share their pictures of flowers, flags, quilts, pets, decor, and collections. The deep purple hollyhocks are stunning! Little Piggy does look like a plush toy! So glad the little Montgomery Ward sewing machine found a good home. A very pleasant 71* here in SCWI and no water in the basement from last night’s rain. Hooray! Kris

I’m getting all the comments & the box to make a comment. Good work Mary & Happy Belated birthday & 4th of July 🇱🇷

    Mary,

Whatever you did you fixed it. I can read and see everything when I go to “read on the blog”.

  9. Fran

Love that flag quilt. Enjoyed all the photos. Its the best eye candy with coffee in the morning.

In between retreats so getting stuff done at home in the sewing room. A baby quilt is almost done–just need to tack the binding down Have another loaded on the long arm (as in baby quilt) but I need groceries so have to make a trip to the city today, It wears me out to go so doubtful on any sewing today.. I finished the block of an EPP project and anxious for a hand stitching evening on anything but those blocks. They have to be appliqued down after I pick background fabric.

Temps have been perfect. Not too hot! Noisy last night but done before 11.

  10. Donna Jo

It looks like everything is working fine on the blog! The July 3rd post shows the comments now where it didn’t before. There’s always lots of ads that I hope everyone is clicking. Glad you had a wonderful birthday. We had a fun 4th since it rained only in the morning. It’s going to be a slow day since we didn’t get to bed until after 1:00. Ugh.

  11. Linda C Schluchter

I got the comment box with this one but not the one with the little pig. I want to snuggle that little piggy! And, I can’t believe you passed up that little machine but glad it has a good home!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – I keep trying to tell myself I need to downsize and as I find things I put them in “storage” until I can find the right method of selling them. It was such a sweet little machine and I’m tickled it lives with Rosemary now.

hi all. it is finally quiet outside my house. obviously one of my neighbors is one that spends a small fortune at the fireworks stands. started before 8 pm and didn’t let up til just before midnight. hopefully they are all finished now. i did get in quite a bit of stitching, working on a new squares quilt and have it half-built. using up (and cutting up more) 3.5″ squares (and finishing off that piece of fabric). read comments online about scrap quilts and how easy it is to get hooked on making them. i just love them. save the bigger pieces for backs and/or borders and binding. i like working with squares, half square triangles, quarter square triangles, flying geese, strips, bricks, whatever. i seem to love them all. i could give away a ton of big pieces and just work with scraps. most everything i’ve been making for the last several years have been for donation. i may hang on to a quilt for a couple years and then give them away. still need to finish my grandson’s quilt (needs quilted) and the one for my son (it is gigantic and way too heavy right now). someone mentioned your ‘grandkids’ as honorary grandkids and that struck a chord with me. they are honorary and very real. enough of me. i hope everyone enjoyed their 4th of july. hugs, patti in florida (sending good healing thoughts for rick and larry)

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Patti – thanks for those good thoughts! You are one busy gal and it’s just got to keep you going – all that cutting and sewing!!! Well done, Patti!

Happy to see the comment box here tonight. I watched both the PBS and Macys musical shows. NYC was just as dazzling lit up as the capital was in Washington seeing all the buildings.
Got an email from a quilt store near our camp announcing sales and it contained an interesting sentence……”with our children around here out of school, we do appreciate when people come in modestly dressed”.

      1. Kathy

Yes an Amish family built this new building and started with Bernina sewing machines and now are having fabric bolts for sale. Our state has passed stricter laws against the Amish practices with puppies so I don’t see them out at markets here, thank goodness.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – that was going to be my next question so glad you answered it.

          1. Kathy

Mary, you and I both share that same concern, I know so I will not support anyone who did what is banned here now.

Happy 4th of July! It was a gray day here. We got .4” rain with just a few tiny hailstones this afternoon. We went to see the Kevin Kostner movie Horizon late this afternoon. It is quite the movie, a lot of shooting, but I lfouns the turbulent story about the west to be interesting in this storyline. This movie was not quite 3 hours. Chapter 2 is in August, so to be continued. I think I will take my sister to see it, and hold off on Minions 4for a week or so. Maybe I will be able to understand the storyline better. I did a presentation at the Marshall Area Senior Center on Thursday, topic was birding and Bluebirds. I enjoyed telling members about birds, the Bluebird Recovery Program of Minnesota, and the bluebird nests I have had this year (3 total). Quilting, birding and gardening are my hobbies. Our lawn got mowed yesterday and I have all of my flower gardens weeded. Now to maintain the weed free zones. I cleaned up my birdbaths, and have 2 little solar fountains working once again!

Worked again, read blog, continue reading & comments show at bottom

    Happy birthday 🎈 & 4th of July

    1. Elaine Kopischke-Trejo

Oh my gosh!!! A comments window opened up! I can leave one. Furry, happy happy belated birthday to you!! And second, thank you for continuing the blog even though it doesn’t always work the way you would like. I’m just glad you continue to share a piece of your life, even if we can’t always share ours. Hope you had a peaceful day.❤️❤️

Elaine – but that’s the point – I don’t want to be the only one “talking” – I like to hear from all of you.

I got the comment box after I clicked on “Read on blog.”
Still no comment box on the emailed one.

Happy Birthday Mary! So good of you to share so much of your life with us. I feel like I know You!

  18. Ann in PA

Yay! It worked Mary! Our drought has some relief tonight. Grass is yellow straw, flowers are wilting, storms are traveling to the north and south of us but we just had 67 minutes of rain! We’re porch-sitting now; listening to the birds singing.
Happy 4th of July! God bless America!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Ann – oh,wow! I can just imagine what the air smells like after your rain – maybe now it will keep up – not flood! – just be there as you need it. We’ve had two years of drought and there are times I think we may have asked for more than we need! Haha!

  19. Joy in NW Iowa

I’m not sure we could measure the rain early this am. It was a beautiful 4th! We sat outside actually in the sun because the wind was cool. We had burgers, sweet corn, potato salad, baked beans, watermelon and brownies! Everyone was stuffed. A good day with family!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – have you guys got sweet corn already???? I’m jealous if you do.

Not sure what you’re trying again I received the first one “Games Tonight”. We’re heading off to a small town about 25-ish miles from here to watch their fireworks. Supposed to be a good show. I just wish it weren’t so blasted hot!
    Happy Fourth everyone!

      1. Deb in VA

Mary, yes it did. I “subscribed” to receive comments and whenever anyone commented, it came right into my email so I could keep up with what everyone was saying versus having to go back to the blog.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Deb – I’m having trouble explaining this to Richard. Since there were 100 replies a couple days ago he thinks it’s all probably ok but I know it’s not. Got any suggestions for me?
