I really can’t catch a break this winter – I have caught a cold somewhere except that it feels different than a cold. It’s sneezing and a terrible runny nose and Benadryl does help but I don’t know what else to try. Any advice, ladies? I’ve used a nasal spray and eye drops for itchy eyes along with Benadryl. I’m at a loss.
Last Monday I did a trial radio frequency treatment on my shoulders and I felt immediate relief. The pain relief did not last through the night however. Hmmm. – I don’t know enough about this yet. Tomorrow I’m going for a 30 minute session. Anybody done this? It will be once a week for 6 weeks and then maintenance.
So I’m working on Bitcoin when I do get to the machine. Mindless sewing – I love it!

I LOVE that photo of Barney!!!!!
Hope you are beginning to feel better. I had something icky last month. Not COVID, not influenza, not RSV, not strep; a bad cold virus. No fever but two days in bed. It morphed into a sinus infection and two more weeks of a cruddy cough. Give yourself grace to rest and hydrate. Your body needs time to heal. (One night I was up having a can of chicken noodle soup at 3:30 am!) Just lay low and build your strength.
So sorry you have the crud! I also had it a few weeks ago. Totally out of the blue and the first cold/allergy/whatever I’ve had since I can remember! I never get sick. Felt like my eyes were going to pop out of my head and sneezed all the time! Just took allergy/cold type meds for symptoms but it sure zapped me. We’re vacationing in AZ now for awhile enjoying some warmer temps and enjoying the outdoors. Brought my Featherweight along and am sewing in the evening. Life is good!
i was sick for 2+ weeks, same symptoms. My doctor suggested allergy meds. I chose once a day Zyrtec and it really seemed to help. If you have high blood pressure avoid any cold/allergy meds that have a D after their name. Hope this helps!
Though it isn’t cheap, it’s not extremely expensive. Signal Relief patch. It really works! I think I did some sort of damage to my shoulder at the rotator cuff level. I don’t know when I’ll be able to get it fixed. So I stuck my neck out and bought three patches. Took roughly 3-4 days before I was using my arm as close to normal as possible. Still get some aching when I lay down but shifting around usually straightens it out. Unreal!
Odd that you are having a particularly bad allergic reaction. The eye problem seems to say it’s seasonal allergy. Eye drops and cold wet compresses on the eyes. This is an early spring here. Washing your clothes often after being outside may help.
My daughter had a bad reaction to spring when she was in DC. She needed to go to the doctor as her eyes were swollen.
Cute picture of Barney.
Mary without a fever and sore throat it may be allergies. Mine are really bad this week with a horrible runny nose and watery eyes. I take a once a day allergy med and usually 1/2 a pill works but I’m on a full pill and not much better. I’ve had sinus surgery so always have neilmed which is a sinus rinse on hand, finally remembered to do that yesterday and it did help. I just need to be consistent and do it every day. My son and husband had the same symptoms you have but also were so tired they slept the better part of three days. Pretty much only woke up to go to the bathroom and have some toast. After three days they were better. Both had a fever too.
Hope you feel better soon.
I would keep on with those treatments if I was in your shoes.
I have had a couple of friends have a weird virus. No fever. All in their throats. My nail lady canceled my appt this morning due to her having that nasty stuff. No name for it. No energy and lots of sleep for 3 days.
I have a greatgrandbaby due in a month so today I am quilting the baby quilt for him/her.
My doctor suggested Musinex DM 1200. You might also try a nasal spray like Flonase. Afrin and sprays like that can have a rebound effect which makes congestion worse. Hope you feel better!
I usually take night quil and day quil and if really bad mucinex with it. I also take 1 zinc tab daily and when sick bump it up to 2tabs. Hope that you feel better soon!!!!
If I have a cold I use Nyquil just at bedtime. It seems to calm the runny nose & cough enough to help me sleep. For allergies I use Zyrtec. Of course I use the store brands for both of these meds, half the price for the same results. I don’t know anyone who had the radio frequency treatments but I sure hope it works for your shoulders. That tulip quilt puts me in the mood for springtime & I can’t wait to see your Bitcoin. Love that pic of Barney on lookout.
I’m sorry your feeling under the weather, lots of good advice from others. I take Clariton D, which is not a prescription but you must ask the pharmacist for. It helps my itchy, watery eyes, sneezing etc. I get the 12 hour and take one in the AM and one in the PM. Try a small box of 12. I’ve also heard that Sudafed is excellent, but you need to ask your pharmacist for it. I hope you feel better soon. We are still traveling and today we are going to the home James Audubon and his park. We will see many of his original works and drawings. I always enjoyed the Audubon magazine that my parents got in the mail. Its sunny and 70 in Kentucky.
Trees are pollinating right now. I use Allegra. One pill for 24 hours’ relief.
It sounds to me like it is seasonal allergies. With grasses and weeds waking up from winter, pollen wakes up too. At this time of year, anything is possible. Take care of yourself.
Nyquil and Dayquil
Jan, I have these same two medications, fortunately one can get them over the counter. So far, they have worked for me when I have been ill. I hope to stay well so I try to stay home a lot.
Mary, sounds to me like severe sinus allergies. You have been outside alot lately. Thats going on around my area. The weather-cold then warm! I take over the counter zyrtec-usally buy the Kroger brand- half the price and works just as well!
Good luck!
I told everyone that I was THIS old before getting something viral that caused me to sneeze over and over. And I’ve had lots of things because I was a mother and teacher. My nose was so stuffed I thanked the gods I had a mouth to breathe. I also ran a slight fever. I don’t like using Nyquil because it makes me a bit grumpy and out of it the next morning, but it was the only thing that unstuffed me enough to sleep. I am happy to say that it left after a week and didn’t leave any residual cough. How DOES something like this sweep the country? Good luck on your latest venture with healing.
Kathy – the reason I am so puzzled is that I am not congested nor do I have those body aches. Of course I have body aches nearly every day! Haha
Oh, no! So sorry you are sick; not what you need. Take Care.
Let the flu come. Go in your bed for a couple of days and then the flu is gone. No nasalspray or eardrops. Let the flu do his work. That is the best remedie.
Greetings Janny S.
Oh! Mary, a cold is miserable. I think lots of naps with Hazel and Keeper is the best medicine. Wrapped up in a quilt (quilts have magic medicine). Around here we have the hottest taco we can find to burn those coodies out. Good luck.
My husband and I have also had that cold. He got it first and then when he was about over it, I got it. That was the worst cold I’ve ever had. I got it on a Wednesday with Friday and Saturday being the worst-no fever just a bad runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes. It lasted about a week. Steve took NyQuil cold and flu, nasal spray, and chloraseptic and thought it helped. I just used the nasal spray with minimal relief. My eyes watered so bad, I couldn’t even see to sew. I took a home Covid test which was negative. I read that drinking a lot of water helps with the congestion which it did help. My daughter in Virginia also had it so it must be pretty widespread. The stomach flu is also going around in our area. Hope we don’t get that. And hope you feel better soon.
Nyquil for a decent nights sleep. The Daquil isn’t nearly as good as the Nyquil. At least, this is our experience with it. We haven’t tried the new one that’s out now. So sorry you are sick and have shoulder pain as well. Hope you get well soon….
Up here in NE SD influenza B is running rampant. Seems our middle school got hit the hardest. I hope that isn’t what you have as it’s pretty tough. Sore throat, runny nose, fever, etc. Maybe if you are able to get tested they could give you something to lessen the symptoms since it’s early on.
Mary,
Sure hope I am wrong, but it sounds like the start of the new flu that is going around. If so, rest and Tylenol. It lasts a long time and other symptoms are coming.
Speaking from experience even though I got my flu shot
Brenda – oh,dear! What other symptoms are.coming? This is my 6th day.
Your newsletter always brings a smile to me. I want to let you know how much I appreciate all the work you do to keep it going. My life seems rather dull compared to yours. I think of you when I’m sewing because I bought a log cabin pin cushion from you when you had a booth in Rosemont, Il. I so loved going to your booth and seeing all the pretty kits. If I ever figure how to send pictures of my quilts I’ll be sending them. Thanks for many years of newsletters. ❤️
Sandy – sending a picture is pretty easy – bring the picture up on your screen, tap the little arrow pointing up – then there will be a place to type in my email. Just try it
