They admitted Rick yesterday to stay overnight. The surgery was scheduled for 11 but he didn’t get in till around 1:30 and it could possibly be a 4 hour surgery so the doctor and Rick both sent me home which I was glad of. We had arrived at 9:30 and I couldn’t sit there any longer. The doctor called me after surgery and said everything went fine. Rick had a prior ablation at Mayo in 2008. The nerve had grown around that same circuit again.
I have many reader photos so this might be a two part post.

And a few pics from the farm:

Guess who followed us to the garden yesterday – yup, Greta, Little Dumb Ass or LDA for short!

I started to pick the peas.
Rick just called for me to pick him up in 45 minutes
so I’m leaving now.

The flood has involved so many towns and cities in our area and east now to Okoboji and south to Spencer etc. so devastating! Four lives have been lost in Rock Valley. There just are no words when your friends and family have lost their homes….
Joy – I hope you see tonight’s post.
So glad to hear Rick is home now and hopefully on the mend. All the pics today were just fabulous! Everyone has such great talents. Even the catapiller was pretty. It is very hot& dry here. We could use some of your rain if anyone wants to share. Stay safe!
Mary, they evacuated (Rock Valley) every one north of Hwy 18 last night with boats! Our church basement is full of water As are three others. Plus all the homes. I have heard there were four lives lost, I cannot confirm that as true but the thought is awful. Rock rapids is having the same issues as is canton, SD and then on down the line of the river…Hawarden, Akron, etc. so hard to get our arms wrapped around it.
Joy – oh my, I’m going to post this afternoon about that – Connie’s neighbors lost their bank behind the retaining wall. We just drove to Forest City where the river goes through – it’s unbelievable – so much water
Great pictures today, I pretty much love them all. The churn dash is one of my favorite patterns. It’s such a relief for you and Rick knowing the surgery went well. Prayers for Kim and family. The rain can stop any time now. In southern Minnesota we have roads and bridges closed with farm fields turned into lakes but Iowa has it lots worse, like double and triple the rain we have had.
On another note, someone (sorry I forgot who) on this blog recommended reading “The Women” by Kristen Hannah. WOW! This is a ‘must read’.
Janet – The Women is a great read, isn’t it? I even preordered the book when it was announced because Hannah is one, if not the top, of my favorite authors.
Glad Rick did well and hope he’s feeling better ! That Greta is a little booger! She’s cute, though. I think the Fever are starting to hit their stride—I have an article to send you but am waiting to see what happens tonight—might be another good one tomorrow.
I’m not in on the Ft. Dodge discussion, but my educational assistant for !1 years was from Dubuque and was married to Ed Breen, who was from Ft. Dodge. His uncle, also Ed Breen, was a state senator and owned both a radio and a tv station and was a well-known broadcaster. That’s been a while ago as Ed is in his late 70’s. Ed the nephew became a print journalist and ended up here in Indiana as the editor of our local paper for years, then an editor at the Ft. Wayne Journal-Gazette until he retired. He and Joanne are both well-known for the acerbic wit and somewhat quirky personalities—I’d call Ed a lovable curmudgeon. Small world!
Glad to hear Rick’s procedure went well. All of the pictures are great! I love the scrappy many star quilt.
Please think of this area of northwest Iowa and south east South Dakota! It just rains and rains! The flooding devastation is out of control! Pray for all of those that are being evacuated tonight!
Joy – which area is being evacuated? Talked to Connie at Okoboji and things aren’t good there either. It’s raining here but we have had only reasonable amounts.
It’s good to hear that Rick’s procedure went well; sending good wishes for his recovery and your patience in caring for him. All the pictures are beautiful; I especially liked the RWB quilt with so many stars.
I went to guild’s community service sew day today, sewing together quarter square log cabin blocks into tops. I didn’t quite finish mine so I have “homework” to do before the next sew day.
It is so good hear from you. I have been thinking about you, Rick and his procedure yesterday. I am so glad it is over and things went well.
Diane, your parents’ “Pickledish” quilt is amazing; all those tiny pieces blows my mind!
All today’s quilts are beautiful; I especially love the large patriotic one with all the stars.
Rita, wishing your daughter all the best as she fights her cancer battle. From one mother to another, I am keeping you in my prayers, too.
Greta is so cute. Thanks so much, Mary 🥰
Jeanie thanks, it’s hard not being closer for her but she has made good friends in Texas and they have her covered. They even had a party when she decided to shave her head. It’s a close knit group and they get together regularly.
Mary, I missed reading the blog for a few days and I am doing some catch-up. Glad to hear Rick’s procedure went well, and he got to stay overnight at the hospital. Hope the home recovery goes well for him. The amounts of rain readers are mentioning for SE South Dakota and NW Iowa sound just awful . . . and its not done raining yet. We are suppose to get some thunderstorms on Saturday from the same storm front. Thankful the temperatures are now cooler. Janice in Traverse City area.
So glad to hear Rick’s procedure went well ; he’s home and on the mend.
The pictures are lovely. Thank you for sharing.
This morning, we set out on the 75 minute trip to the local Mennonite market. Have not been since last June. All of the veggies were crisp, fresh, and beautiful. A small box of blueberries, $4.00. Onions, $1.30 / lb. and peppers $3.50 / lb. Can’t remember what I paid for pickling cucumbers, but the huge heads of lettuce are still $2.00.
If other readers are traveling to local markets, I’d love to hear about the prices in your area.
San / Murphy, NC
We had .85″ of rain yesterday on our farm near Oskaloosa. We were so dry. I can’t even imagine getting 10-15″ of rain! It would be nice if it could be shared in SE Iowa where we desparately need more. Enjoyed all the pictures today. Glad Rick is home and recovering. We are looking forwad to the game tonight.
thanks for the update on rick. probably was better that he stayed overnight. you both got a chance for good rest. am sure you’ll have alot of guidelines for him. thanks for sharing so many pictures again. all of them are fabulous. the pickle dish quilt is in excellent condition for its age. just beautiful. thanks so much for sharing. seems there is lots of rain in so many places. i hope everyone stays safe. greta looks like she needs reassurance that she is still loved. patti in florida
Patti – oh, she’s still loved but I’ve warned about ever pulling that stunt again!
Rita, Wow, what a surprise to see you and your family’s pictures. When I saw your picture, I recognized you from EIHQ quilt guild. It had to have been a few years back because I’ve been in Co. for 5 years already. I know you and I have visited before in person. I have a dear friend back in Marion who just had her 9th chemo treatment and has lost her hair also. What an awful disease. I pray the treatments are effective for both your daughter and my friend too. Now I’ll be able to picture you when I read one of your emails in the blog. Have a blessed week everyone. I’m glad Rick’s procedure went well. And I’m praying that your days will settle down and be a bit less stressful, Mary. Take care of that husband of yours, but take care of yourself too. Jeanne in Co.
Glad Rick is fine and home by now.
Loved all the photos especially of LDA . HA HA
Love the pictures. I am particularly impressed with the photography of the caterpillar – it reminds us of the detail and beauty of nature. Wishing Rick a speedy recovery and the ability to do all he wants to do.
Thanks for sharing the good news of Rick’s successful procedure! Beautiful quilt show again today. The pickle dish is so pretty. Also love the quilt of many stars and the appliqued one with the eagles. Lovely work from all.
Happy Ricks procedure went ok and he’s coming home.
Pictures were are beautiful!
We are seeing the sun this afternoon! Yay! We have had 10 1/2 inches of rain this week. In the past 24 hours we had 8 inches! So much devastation of bridges out and roads washed out, basements flooded! Yuk! And it’s not over yet. Tonight and tomorrow are set to give us another 3-4!
Mary glad to hear that Rick is doing well. Have him take it easy for a while. Maybe his energy level will be better now. Love the quilts and pet pictures. Greta is such a character.
Yes that is my family’s picture, my daughters and their family. We spent a week together in MN. Kim was diagnosed with cancer in Feb and is going through chemo treatments. She is down to 7 more weeks and then will have surgery. She is doing well with only minor side effects. She lives in Texas so it is hard to help, but she knows we will be there in a heartbeat. She continues to work and lets her body tell her when she needs to rest.
Keep her in your prayers. Her treatment nurse is from Fort Dodge, Iowa, how ironic. So they had something in common when the treatments started.
Rita – yes, how ironic that she’s from Fort Dodge! Kim looks pretty good really – of course I don’t know what her normal is but I hope this all turns out well.. I know you’ll drop everything and go to Texas if she asks.
Mary, glad everything went well for Rick. That Greta, she’s quite the cat. We have now had 15 5/8″ of rain
this week so far. Lenkota Country Club is flooded as in a low area. #1 hole is the only hole that doesn’t
have water on it. The small creek on the west side of Lennox is a big lake on both sides of the road. Canton
has been hit really hard. They had 12″ yesterday. Turner Country has no travel for them. This is all in SE South Dakota. Like the pictures for today. Remember seeing those caterpillars in the garden.
Glenda – Connie just sent me pics from Okoboji – Mom was living there in 1993, the precious flood. The pics are shocking and it’s raining there again this afternoon.
Glad all went well for Rick. Speedy recovery! Spectacular pictures today again.
Thanks for the update on Rick. Hope he’s feeling better soon. Beautiful pictures once again. My mom had the plant in the first picture but I don’t know the name of it. Diane love your pickle dish quilt too. Lucky you! Mary don’t forget we have a game tonight at 6:30.
Donna Jo – I haven’t forgotten. Yesterday I was at Fleet Farm after I left the hospital and I had my Red Fever shirt on. In the parking lot a man stopped me and told me how much he liked my shirt! Haha!!! Thank you again! I wore it to the hospital because I wanted to look my best!🙂↔️
My son & daughter in law & granddaughter, Charli went to see Caitlin Clark play in Indiana & they brought me back a navy blue & yellow t-shirt, I wore it to Wegman’s & it got a lot of attention 😂 I forgot I had it on & was surprised when I got a thumbs up & I like your shirt comments! Surprising how many fans she has! All the pictures are great! Glad Rick is doing well!!
Joyce – I’m so glad CHARLI got to go to a game to watch Caitlin in person!!! How’s her knee?
Her knee is getting better all the time, she is still doing PT twice a week & goes to training once a week. The surgeon is letting her run now and jumping too, she’s working very hard to be able to play in the fall. Thanks for asking!!
You are welcome. You were the one who turned me on to women’s basketball! ☺️ It was a fun game to watch.
Glad to hear that Rick is on the mend and his surgery went well. I bet you’re ready to have things settle down . Take care.
Even the caterpillar is pretty.
I’m glad Rick stayed the night and you got to come home.
Thanks to all for the pictures
HI Mary, I am very happy Rick’s ablation went well and he will be home soon. Medical issues are always a worry aren’t they? It is HOT here already, too. I walked early, then walked my neighbor Henry while his mom was at the Dr. We stayed in the shade and on the grass.
My mom and dad’s Pickledish wedding quilt was hand pieced and hand quilted by my Nana. They were married 57 years:) My sister is moving so it is my turn to have it. Yippee. I love it.
All of you in this HEAT monsoon, please stay safe and cool.
Mary,
Glad Rick stayed overnight. That will start his recovery off right. He’ll need to rest and will be tired for a week…sorry, once a surgical recovery RN, always a surgical recovery RN! You’ll get plenty of instructions.
Beautiful pictures on the blog the last several days, I’ve enjoyed them all.
We are very hot and humid here in southeast Michigan. I worked in the garden early….6 am til 10 am and got rained on twice so I retreated to the house! We have a few hours of expected heat now then more rain.
Take care and I’m glad Rick’s procedure is over and he will feel so much better soon.
So glad to hear the update on Rick. Sending prayers for easy recovering. Love love the quilt with all the stars.
Thanks for the update! Bet you are taking balloons and big Welcome Home sign!
